Bereaved Struggle To Cope In January – “Unprecedented Demand” expected.

The bereavement charity Sue Ryder has told Winchester Today that it’s preparing for an “unprecedented surge in demand” in January for its online bereavement support services.

The charity says two thirds of those who’ve experienced bereavement agree that January is one of the most challenging months in which to grieve, a figure that rises to 71% for those aged 16-24. January is consistently the month with the highest demand for support services, with many attributing the difficulty to the sadness of facing another year without their family member who died.

Sue Ryder estimates there will be upwards of 270,000 visits to their services this month alone. Demand has soared by 36% in the last 12 months for counselling support or accessing resources and information on the charity’s website.

Others say they are facing the pressure of ‘moving on’, or that they find it hard to plan or focus on goals when they are missing someone.

There are positives though, mainly from those who say they are ready to seek support in 2024. The charity has been providing that for more than 70 years. Staff are encouraging people to gather round those who are struggling, and the charity’s also urging us to better support those around them who are grieving. They told Winchester Today that “dying and grief are universal experiences, but too many people face them alone.”

Operation Holly – More Than 800 Arrests Police Remain “Disappointed” By Actions Of Select Few Over Drink And Drug Driving

Once again, a certain section of drivers across Hampshire think it’s perfectly normal to get behind the wheel when under the influence of drink and / or drugs. Thankfully, 800 of them may soon begin to see the light after having been arrested in a joint operation carried out by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary and Thames Valley Police. More than 800 arrests were made across both force areas as part of Operation Holly, the annual Christmas drink and drug driving campaign.

The Joint Operations Roads Policing Unit carried out targeted activity from 1 - 31 December 2023 to stop drivers under the influence of drink and drugs.

810 arrests were made across both force areas. The results have left officers in charge frustrated, like Detective Chief Inspector Mike Bettington, of the Joint Operations Roads Policing Unit: “Operation Holly is carried out during the festive period every year and it’s disappointing to see that people are still getting behind the wheel when under the influence of drink and/or drugs.

“We see too often the devastating consequences that can result from this behaviour and I am pleased that we have managed to make so many arrests and prevent the potential harm that can be caused by drink and drug drivers.

“Our priority is to make the roads safer for everyone and we’d ask the public to help us do this by challenging anyone you think may be about to drive having consumed alcohol or used drugs.

“Even the smallest amount of alcohol or drugs can impact on your driving. It’s not worth the risk.”

First the floods, now the freeze! As if we hadn’t had enough with all that rain last week, now the weather has appeared to have gone full circle with another yellow warning, but this time for ice. The warning will remain in place until midday on Friday. Temperatures in Winchester will struggle to get anywhere over 3C in the daytime today and tomorrow, with overnight temperatures down to minus 2C or lower. Water Emergency Sees Bottles Handout Southern Water had to apologise and set up bottled water stations over the weekend after a problem at the Easton Water Supply Works led to low pressure or no supply at all. Some customers in the SO21, SO22 and SO23 areas of Winchester were without water.

Bottled water stations were opened up at Sainsbury’s Badger Farm, the Winchester East Park and Ride at St Catherine’s, and the Coach Park in Worthy Lane. The company also delivered water to their most vulnerable customers on their priority services register.

But at least one customer posted on social media that he and his partner – on the vulnerable customer list – were put on hold for more than half-an-hour, waiting for someone to answer the phone, describing it as “absolutely shocking”. Another customer on Saturday complained that pressure in parts of the SO23 area has been low since last Tuesday, and that their “whole close was now without water”.

After having been contacted by Winchester Today on the issue of phones being unanswered, Southern Water wrote straight back to us: “We’ve had an influx of calls due to the equipment failure at Easton Water Supply Works. Our teams are answering every call as quickly as we can. Please bear with us, we thank customers for their continued patience”.

Hampshire Hospitals took to social media to reassure patients and visitors that a continuous water supply was being provided at Royal Hampshire County Hospital, with a water tanker supplied by Southern Water as a precaution.

Winchester’s MP Steve Brine also kept constituents up to date through messages on X Yesterday (Sunday) Southern Water put out a message that customers in the Winchester area should be back on supply.

However, the company said they were are expecting further intermittent disruptions as they continue repairs, which may last until tomorrow (Tuesday).

DAB+ Radio Update: As you will know, DAB+ broadcasts in Winchester on the small-scale multiplex have been halted temporarily while the licence was transferred to new owners and a new transmitter was built at Flagstaff Stables just a few hundred yards from the old one at Crabwood Farm. Details of the new Winchester coverage, where that transmitter will be, audience and power required have now been put out for consultation by the regulator, OFCOM. The consultation is running throughout January 2024. Hopefully, all services will then be back on once the consultation has finished. Please have a look at the details published on the OFCOM website. In the meantime, Winchester Today’s fantastic programmes continue at TuneIn and via your smart speaker. Ask Alexa: “Alexa, play Winchester Today.”
