Several teams took advantage of yesterday’s blustery conditions to work out the kinks.

Welcome to Block Island Race Week XXIII Attention all Block Island Race week competitors and guests.

Today we begin the twenty-third Block Island Race Week. On behalf of our presenting sponsor, ROLEX USA, Storm Trysail Club’s officers and members, it is my distinct pleasure to welcome you to New England’s finest sailing venue, Block Island. The local community and Storm Trysail Committees have been working overtime preparing for what is sure to be another memorable week of great racing and socializing. It is our sincere wish that you all enjoy the next five days.

Once again, we will host one-design and handicap racing sailors from around the country on three different Race Circles. Our Race Committees

will again be staffed with the finest and most experienced Race Officers and committees found anywhere in the country, all of whom will again work under the watchful eyes of our on-the water Chairs Dick Neville and David Brennan.

The Duty Office and The Tent remain at The Oar Restaurant as they have since 1997. We are so grateful for our continuing relationship with Steve and Rita Draper, the owner’s of The Oar. Running an event of this size on an island away from home requires local partners. Over the years, the Drapers have been great partners and instrumental to the success of this event. Additionally, the relationships with Rally and Fran Migliaccio of the Continued on page 2

Block Island Boat Basin and Cliff and Sands Payne of Payne’s New Harbor Dock have been critical to our success as they have all simplified the task of organizing our Fleet of Race Committee assets.

Our sponsors have yet again provided us with the support necessary to orchestrate another first class event. Events such as this one simply cannot happen without a loyal group of sponsors. Considering that Block Island Race Week is run exclusively by Storm Trysail Club member volunteers, and that entry fees would only pay for a small percentage of our total costs, I hope that everyone understands and appreciates the contribution and the value that these companies bring to this event. Please thank and support them.

For the first time in the regattas history, one of your skippers will win an invitation to compete in the Bitter End Yacht Club’s Pro Am Regatta, scheduled for October 31 - November 7, 2009, in Virgin Gorda, BVI. The top Corinthian owner/driver in each class will be entered into a drawing at the Awards Ceremony on Friday, June 26. The lucky winner will recieve an invitations to race, eight days and seven nights’ accomodation, and all meals. Good Luck!

Monday, June 22 Low pressure remains meandering around offshore to the E-SE and SE. To the NE side of this low, there will continue to be a brisk/strong NE to N gradient over the region with wind into the 20s.

With this strong N-NE flow there will be lots of lower clouds with drizzle and rain at times.

NOTICE OF RACE AMENDMENT #1 2. RULES 2.1: The Regatta Regulations are amended as follows: Regatta Regulation 7.4 is amended with the following clarifications: PHRF Crew Weight Limitations: Block Island Race Week 2009 allows a higher weight limitation than Yacht Racing Association of Long Island Sound (YRA LIS) PHRF allows. The intention is to allow one more crew member in each size range.

The crew weight limit for an entrant shall be as stated on the PHRF handicap certificate issued by the Yacht Racing Association of Long Island Sound (YRA LIS). If an entrant wishes to change their weight limit to the limits allowed for this event, the entrant shall obtain a new certificate using the maximum limit stated in the table. As stated in Section 7.4, all PHRF boats may carry a crew member less than 14 years of age in addition to the crew weight limit specified on the PHRF handicap certificate.

No PHRF handicap appeals for adjustment for additions or deletions of crew limits will be heard.

5. ADVERTISING 5.1 Is amended to read: Advertising is permitted, unless class rules do not permit, in accordance with ISAF Regulation 20.

Clarification: ISAF Regulation 20 no longer refers to category A or C events.

SAILING INSTRUCTIONS AMENDMENT # 3 Regatta Regulation 6.1 is changed as follows: Maximum total crew shall be the crew number printed on the boats IRC certificate, plus one.

The maximum total crew weight shall not exceed the product of the crew number printed on the boats IRC certificate, plus one, multiplied by 180 pounds.

Boats may carry one additional crewmember less than 14 years of age. This additional crew will not be part of the maximum crew number or weight calculation.

Entrants intending on carrying additional crewmembers less than 14 years of age shall so indicate on their entry form.

For example, because the U.S. Postal Service only delivers mail to the island’s post office there are no street addresses here. Every building has a fire number, but they are non-sequential so don’t use them locate a place.

A well-fed crew is a fast one.

The Block Island Grocery Store (466-2949), located just outside of town, has a deli department that caters to race teams with box lunches for the water and cold cut platters for post-race meals. If you pre-order your crew’s on-board eats for the entire week, they’ll have it ready for pickup each morning. You can also order box lunches on a daily basis by calling before 6pm prior to each sailing day. The store also has a good selection of beer and wine and they’re open from 8am to 8pm.

You can also pre-order box lunches at Sharkys (466-9900), located on Corn Neck Road (across from the Yellow Kittens Tavern), as well as Three Sisters (466-9661) on Old Town Road. You can’t go wrong with their Twisted Sister (turkey, bacon, cheddar cheese, avocado, romaine lettuce and tomato on a roll) …although your vegan crew might prefer to tuck into a Hippie Sister (roasted veggies and hummus in a wrap).

Our pick for a hearty breakfast is Aldo’s on Weldon’s Way (4662198). Bring your hungry crew in for omelets, French toast or the daily special, and pick up some pies, pastries bread and cakes for later.

For your morning coffee (and great egg sammies), see the friendly folks set up next to the store at the Boat Basin, or stop into Juice n’ Java (466-5220) on Dodge Street. If you’re looking for homemade pies, pastries and sandwiches, visit The Block Island Depot (466-2072) on Ocean Avenue, where you’ll also find groceries. They’re open from 6:30 am to 6:30pm. Bethany’s Airport Diner (466-3100), located at the Block Island Airport. They sell chowder, chili and stew by the pot for postrace meals, and they’ll prepare box lunches for the boat.

The Redbird Liquor Store (466-2441) on Dodge Street is open from 9am to 9pm Monday through Thursday, 9am to 10pm Friday and Saturday and noon to 6pm Sunday during Race Week. They will deliver your liquid provisions if you place a sufficiently large order…and if your crew is anything like the ones we know that won’t be a problem!

Did you forget to pack your deck shoes or shades? The Block Island Sport Shop (466-5001), located in the Seaside Marketplace on Weldon’s Way, has sandals and sailing shoes by Teva and Keen, Maui Jim sunglasses, Marmot clothing and Suunto watches. They’re open from 9am to 9pm. Although it’s primarily a SCUBA shop, Island Outfitters and Dive Shop (466-5502), located on Ocean Avenue, carries sunglasses, foul weather gear and Merrell sandals and shoes. They’re open weekdays from 9am to 5pm.

Block Island has 17 miles of sandy beaches, and there’s good surfing when conditions are favorable (although we’re not divulging the location of the tastiest spots!). If you want to rent a board, visit Blockhead Surf Shop (466-9876) on Chapel Street. Owner Sally Sorensen stocks Hobie and Lost boards, surf gear, skateboards and cool, unique gifts for your favorite waverider.

In the event of a medical emergency, call the Block Island Medical Center at 466-2974. The Block Island Health & General Store (known as “The Pharmacy”) on High Street is open from 8am to 10pm and has

everything you’d expect to find in a drug store (except prescription meds) and an ATM. Call 4665825 or 466-5028.

The island has no full service pharmacy, although McQuade’s Pharmacy in Westerly, RI (5960277) will fill your prescription and send it over to the island by air (for a nominal delivery fee), usually by 6pm.

Need a shackle?

If you have an equipment breakdown this week, check the rigger and sailmaker vans parked at Payne’s Dock, or the Hall Spars & Rigging trailer next to the Big Top. If they don’t have what you need, Island Hardware carries marine supplies. They’re located on just outside of town on Ocean Avenue, and are open from 8am to 5pm during Race Week. Call Petie at 466-5831.

The store at Block Island Boat Basin (next to The Oar) carries a basic selection of hardware, line, fenders and tide books. They’re open from 7:30am to 7:30pm during Race Week. Call 466-2631.

A.H. Edwards Marine Repair (466-2655) and Block Island Marine on High Street (466-2028) stock engine parts and can also perform repairs.

Here to there Block Island is a place of exceptional beauty. Encompassing a little more than 7,000 acres, it boasts 28 miles of walking trails that lead throughout the island. The best way to travel the island’s paved roads, however, is by bicycle or moped. Aldo’s Moped, Bike & Car Rental (4665018) on Weldon’s Way offers bike and moped rentals at reduced rates for Race Week participants. Aldo’s has a second location next to The Oar at the Block Island Boat Basin where you can rent a bike, or moped or a Jeep Wrangler, Mustang convertible, PT Cruiser, van or (new for ’09) a smart car. (If you choose the latter, remember that you’re not allowed to use it as shopping cart at the Block Island Grocery store!)

You can rent basic transportation, including mountain bikes and “experienced” cars and vans at Block Island Bike and Car Rental, located on Ocean Avenue (466-2297). Bikes, scooters and mopeds can also be rented at Island Moped & Bikes on Chapel Street (466-2700), Beach Rose Bicycles on High Street (466-2034), The Moped Man on Water Street (466-5444), Old Harbor Bike Shop on Water Street (945-270-4731) and Seacrest Inn Bicycle Rentals at 207 High Street (466-2882).

There are only 21 miles of paved roads on Block Island, as well as many more unpaved miles that range from smooth, hard-packed paths to sandy Jeep trails. These roads are narrow, with few turnarounds, so be ready to back up so oncoming traffic can get by.

Beware of the numerous car-busting rocks strewn along the unpaved roads. Riding a moped or scooter on Block Island’s unpaved roads is against the law. Nevertheless, you might encounter an errant motorbiker, so maintain a vigilant watch.

There are several moped and bicycle accidents on Block Island each season, and statistics don’t make good crew. The island’s physicians, Janice Miller, MD and Paul Mann, MD, urge visitors to follow the rules of the road: don’t speed, ride single file, obey traffic signals, and (above all) wear a helmet. To that, we add this mantra: Slow on the bike – Fast on the boat, Slow on the bike – Fast on the boat…

Taxis If you need to get around the Block quickly and inexpensively, call a cab – you’ll never have a long wait for one. The drivers maintain constant communication with one another, and if the cab you’ve hailed is already full the driver will contact another to pick you up soon.

Many of Block Island’s taxi drivers are year-round residents, and they’re an unparalleled source of information on the best places to dine, drink and shop, along with island history and local scuttlebutt.

Most of the island’s cabs can accommodate parties of five or more, and many of the companies listed below offer island tours.

Race Week One-Design Classes

There’s always a strong One-Design contingent at Block Island Race Week, and many of the regatta’s closest points battles are waged in these classes. This year’s Race Week serves as the Farr 30 East Coast Championship, the J/109 East Coast Championship, and the first-ever J/122 North American Championship. There will also be class starts for the 19boat J/105 fleet, the NYYC Swan 42s (14 boats), the Farr 40s (7), the Beneteau 36.7s (6) and the venerable J/44s (6).

The scorelines for the NYYC Swan 42 fleet from the last Block Island Race Week show how close the racing is in this fleet, which has nearly doubled in size since 2007 - eight boats sailed in 2007 and there are 14 this year. In ’07, Preben Ostberg & Bud Dailey, Jr.’s Tsunami (Rockville, MD) scored a one-point victory over Phil Lotz’s Arethusa, with Andrew Fisher’s Bandit (Greenwich, CT) taking third, one point astern of Arethusa. All of those boats are back this year, along with several other strong contenders, including an Annapolis, MD-based boat named Mustang skippered by Gary Jobson.

The J/122 class is enjoying excellent growth. In 2007, three 122s were entered in the IRC 4 class…and they were dominant. Jim Johnstone’s Tumbleweed III (Newport, RI) notched four bullets on the way to victory, with Andrew Weiss’ Christopher Dragon (Mamaroneck, NY) one point behind in second place and Dave & MaryEllen Tortorello’s Partnership (Fairfield, CT) in third. This year, 11 boats comprise the J/122 One-Design class. With Tumbleweed absent, Christopher Dragon and Partnership must be considered the favorites, although many boats constitute a serious threat, including Mike Bruno, Tom Boyle & Jim Callahan’s Wings (Irvington, NY).

Thirteen boats are entered for the 2009 J/109 East Coast Championship.

The 2007 Race Week class winner, Stephen Tedeschi’s Tastes Like Chicken, did not make the trip north from St. Petersburg, FL this year, so

look for a tough scrap between Rick Lyall’s Storm (Wilton, CT; second in ‘07), David Jannetti’s Jibber Jabber (Southampton, NY; third in ‘07) and Gossip (Wainscott, NY; fourth in ’07). We understand that the crew of the latter boat, entered by “Group W,” is off the bench and they “Wanna Kill, Kill!”

Most of the six boats in the Beneteau 36.7 class did not compete at Race Week in 2007, although the winner of that regatta, Tom Peelen’s Quokka (South Dartmouth, MA) is here to defend their title and should be considered the boat to beat.

Five of the seven boats in the Farr 40 class hail from the Chesapeake, with the others from Bermuda and New York. Larry Bulman & Larry Scholz’s Yellow Jacket (Bethesda, MD) took third in class in ’07 when the F40s sailed in IRC 2, and they’re among the favorites this year. The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy’s Nimbus (Kings Point, NY; formerly owned by Al Minella, the boat was fourth in IRC 2 in ’07) will be co-skippered this week by Midshipmen Chris Branning (who had a starring role in Disney’s Morning Light) and Mike Wagoner, and we expect to see them at the pointy end of the fleet.

There are six boats in the Farr 30 fleet, a significant increase from 2007 when two boats (then known as Mumm 30s) sailed in IRC 4. This class appears too closely matched to pick a favorite, but no team will be fighting harder than the Cadets aboard the U.S. Coast Guard Academy’s Ebur (New London, CT). Another F30 to watch is Norm & Cam Dean’s Just Plain Nutz (Pleasant Valley, NY).

With one exception, the boats in the J/44 class are the same six that competed at the last Block Island Race Week. Each of the 44s will be using their class association-owned One-Design sails at Race Week, and the finishes will likely be among the closest on any of the circles. Jeff Willis’ Challenge IV (Huntington, NY) posted a scoreline of four bullets and three seconds to win this class in ’07, and they’ll be pushed hard (as always) by Jim Bishop’s Gold Digger (New York, NY; second in ’07) and Don & Rick Rave’s Resolute (Huntington Bay, NY; third in ’07).

The six J/29s that comprise the PHRF 2 division are not sailing One-Design due to variations in their rig configurations and auxiliary powerplants (masthead & fractional; inboard & outboard). The boat to beat is John & Tony Esposito’s Hustler (Mohegan Lake, NY), who posted a near-perfect scoreline for their win two years ago. Other teams that look strong are Ira Perry’s Seefest (Dartmouth, MA) and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy’s Renegade (Kings Point, NY), skippered by Midshipman Logan Keltermann.

The “buzz” on AED Training

Making Storm Trysail Commodores look good for 20 years The phrase goes that “behind every successful Block Island Race Week there is a woman.”

That woman is our very own Marcy Trenholm, STC’s Executive Director and the Club’s only full-time employee. This year Marcy is enjoying her 11th BIRW and has become the catalyst that holds it all together. What other event do you know of, that organizes, sets up, functions, and breaks down inside of two weeks?...All on a remote island, no less! Marcy’s job description might look something like this: Executive Director, responsible for Sponsor Relations, Clothing, Transportation, Scheduling, Bookkeeping, Communications, and, above all, Morale. Marcy does it all and does it with good doses of humor and cheer.

Marcy’s tenure with Storm Trysail began in 1989. Like most "Employees of Yacht Clubs," her Boss (the Commodore) changes every two years and in addition, has a new Race Week Chairman to deal with for each event.

Needless to say, she has had to be flexible over the years. She has reported to 11 different administrations and has evolved into the "Corporate Memory" for the Club. Chances are that as competitors, you have all had an opportunity to confer with Marcy. She is our number one problem solver and the only one with all of the answers. It is safe to say that the only thing she does not have a hand in at Block Island is the weather.

The Storm Trysail Club goes the extra mile to keep everyone safe at Race Week, and once again thanks to Captain David R. Blaney of Blaney Marine Safety, an AED (automatic emergency defibrillator) is on the water at all times during racing. On Sunday morning, Captain Blaney presented a seminar on the use of AED at Smuggler’s Cove.

“AEDs have been very effective in saving people who have had sudden cardiac arrest,” said Blaney, who has trained and certified hundreds of professional mariners and recreational boaters in First Aid, CPR (cardiopulmonary recuscitation), and the proper use of an AED. Blaney Marine Safety has provided safety training and loaner AEDs for the staff of Block Island Race Week since 2007. For many years, they have been associated with Emergency Medical Group of Norwalk, CT, distributor of the Phillips AED.

The 2009 Storm Trysail Club Race Week raffle will benefit the Block Island Rescue Squad and The North Light. “For more than 40 years, Storm Trysail members, guest skippers, crews, and families have descended upon Block Island and, essentially, taken it over for an entire week,” said Regatta Chairman and Storm Trysail Club Vice Commodore Eric Kreuter. “Block Island recognizes the importance of tourism to its local economy and embraces the economic contributions of Block Island Race Week. Conversely, we recognize the importance of Block Island to our club’s heritage and want to give something back.”

The Rescue Squad is the EMT service for the island. It is equipped with two ambulances and staffed by volunteers. “Donations will help provide training programs to keep Emergency Medical Technicians up-to-date with thier certifications,” said Rescue Squad Captain Kate McConville.

The North Light, the lighthouse on the northern tip of the island, serves as a maritime museum. The North Light Commission continues to maintain the 1867 building and has been renovating the light for seven years. Just last week, the refurbished lantern was returned from the mainland and installed. The association is looking to raise an additional $10,000 to put the lens, removed during the 1970s, back in the lantern.

Tickets are $10 each, or a book of 10 tickets for $90, and can be purchased at the Duty Office (Tent behind the Oar) or all day and under the tent every night between 6 and 8pm. The grand prize again will be a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner timepiece with additional prizes supplied

by Mount Gay, Gill, vineyard vines, Heineken, Bitter End Yacht Club, Soundview Millworks, Lewmar and True Wind. The Storm Trysail Club expresses its appreciation to all the sponsors who donated prizes for the raffle.

Thanks to the raffle and contributions at Race Week XXII in 2007, the Storm Trysail Club was able to donate $20,000 to North Light Restoration, Block Island Early Learning Center, Block Island Rescue Squad and the Block Island Historical Society.

The Round the Island Race winner in 2007 was Bob & Farley Towse’s R/P 66 Blue Yankee (Stamford, CT).

Although any one of several very fast boats could win the Round the Island Race this week, the Race Committee strives to make this contest as fair as possible for the entire fleet by grouping classes together and starting from a single line at staggered intervals. The starting area will be approximately ½ mile west of the entrance to Great Salt Pond.
