To all participants: On behalf of our 2015 Block Island Race Week Committee, I want to thank all of our participants for coming to the 50th Anniversary Storm Trysail Club Block Island Race Week. Our goal has been to deliver good competitive sailing and family fun for wide range of boats and sailors. I hope we have succeeded.

We employed the successful race week formulas that have worked well in the past.

Our Race Committee people on the water have years of experience from many regattas around the world. Their wisdom in taking advantage of the opportunity on Tuesday to run the Round the Island Race gave many of you a thrilling memory of exciting sailing performance that will last many years. For some it was an opportunity to test the limits of your boats and capabilities and learn better how to manage these weather conditions when they occur in the future.

We also tried some new ideas and new technology, including the first regatta app, to better communicate with both participants and their family and friends on the mainland. Our work to have a cleaner regatta is a reminder to all that we who love the sea have a responsibility to protect it from harm. I am pleased to announce that with support from one of our generous sponsors, 2015 Block Island Race Week is a carbon neutral regatta. We all worked to reduce the carbon footprint, and the balance was offset with purchased carbon credits.

All participants will soon receive a short online survey. Please tell us what you like and what we can do better so that we can continue to bring you the kind of race week experience that you want. Please also remember our sponsors, and the 130 kind people who volunteered their time and hard work to put on Race Week. Their efforts and sponsorship are critical to preparing and presenting this event for all of you.

Well-traveled Caminos wins Everett B. Morris Memorial Trophy as top boat

By Sean McNeill Founded in 1965, the club’s Block Island Race Week is built on a foundation of fun, friendly competition. It attracts rival crews who beat each other up on the racecourse and then laugh about it over a drink afterwards. The competition is intense, but it’s the camaraderie that keeps bringing people back.

“I did my first race week in 1971 or ’73,” said club member Kevin McNeil, owner of the Farr 30 Seabiscuit that finished second in PHRF 1. “The club does a good job running the regatta and Dick Neville and Dave Brennan do an outstanding job in the race committee. It’s just a great week to be a part of.”

“This week is epic,” said Paul Beaudin, owner of the J/105 loulou.

“Fantastic weather, no fog or rain, perfect sailing conditions…it’s perfect. This week is as much about bonding with our families as well as our competitors.”

The excellent weather conditions have made this year’s race week special and two words say it all – no fog! Rarely has a Block Island Race Week never lost a day, half or full, to fog, but that was the

case this year. The fantastic weather conditions allowed the race committee to run 11 races over five days, more than have been run since 2005. Coupled with fantastic wind conditions for the four days of windward/leeward racing and 20 to 30 knots for the Round the Island Race, this year’s week will be remembered as one of the best ever.

“This is probably the best race week we’ve had in the past 10 editions,” said Principal Race Officer Dick Neville. “We’ve rarely had five full days of racing. Usually the weather interrupts one day.

But the conditions this week have been spectacular. It might be the best race week ever.”

This year’s fleet totaled 167 boats in 15 classes, and Donald Filippelli’s J/109 Caminos won the Everett B. Morris Memorial Trophy for best overall performance. Caminos also won the J/109 North American Championship, conducted as part of race week.

Hailing from Amagansett, N.Y., near Sag Harbor on the eastern end of Long Island, Caminos is helmed by Filippelli’s son-in-law, Ryan Dempsey and includes many family members. They’ve placed in the top three in the J/109 class each of the past three race weeks

before breaking through this year.

“I don’t sail the boat anymore because of Parkinson’s disease, but Ryan and the crew do a tremendous job,” said Filippelli. “It’s a 10-year-old boat and takes a lot of abuse, and I love it. Each day I tell the crew ‘Be safe, have fun and goddammit win!’”

Factors determining boat of the week include class size, total points and margin of victory. Racing in the largest class at race week, 25 boats, Caminos finished with the low score of 21 points, won four races, had nine top-2 finishes and finished 17 points ahead of Bill Sweetser’s second-placed Rush.

“They had a whole other gear that we’ve never seen before,” said Vicky Jo Neiner, who sails on Dr. Carl Olsson’s Morning Glory.

“Just fantastic.”

“Caminos was really fast,” said Dan Cameron, the mainsail trimmer on Skoot. “Ryan just punches it off the line and they had good speed on the course.”

While Caminos won the top award Josh Burack, owner of the J/105 Peregrina, won the Emil “Bus” Mosbacher Sportsmanship Trophy.

Peregrina lost its mast in Tuesday’s Round the Island Race when a shroud broke. The mast folded in half at the top spreader.

Burack then volunteered for Race Committee duty and was placed on a safety boat. Prior to racing on Wednesday, fellow J/105 competitor Damian Emery’s Eclipse broke its gooseneck during

practice before the day’s first race. Burack raced back to Champlin’s Marina, removed the gooseneck fitting from his broken mast, and got it to Eclipse with time to spare.

“Before we left the dock on Wednesday, we noticed a crack in the gooseneck, but decided it would likely be fine until the end of the week, but of course the moment we went up with the main, it busted.” said Dave Shrader, trimmer on Eclipse. “If it wasn’t for Josh running in and stripping the gooseneck off his stricken boat for us, it would’ve been a lot worse. We didn’t even miss a race,” he said. “It’s this sort of camaraderie and respect for one another that makes Race Week so special.”

Beyond the trophies, shout outs go to two other class winners for extended consistency. Jeffrey W. Willis’ J/44 Challenge IV and John and Tony Esposito’s J/29 Hustler have multiple winning streaks that deserve recognition. Willis has won his class for six consecutive race weeks dating back to 2005, while the Espositos have a five-regatta streak dating back to 2007. During those streaks, Hustler has won 70 percent of all races sailed and Challenge IV 56 percent.

In the venerable J/44 fleet, the key to consistency, according to Willis is, “good starts, boat speed at the line, and in One-Design you have get that ‘jump’ on the fleet and cover.”

“It’s kind of unbelievable!” said Lenny Sitar, owner of VAMP on the win streak. “They had great tactics, boat speed and crew work. I think that Jeff has won the J/44 North Americans 15 times in 25 years.”

Tuesday’s Round the Island Race was a highlight of the week for many. With the wind blowing 20 to 30 knots from the southwest, many crews said they reached a new top speed for their boat.

Boats such as Christopher Dragon, Hooligan and Watermark all reported a top speed of 22 knots. The C&C 30 Themis hit a top speed of 19 knots, while the Summitt 40 DownTime hit 18 knots.

Even the Sabre 362 Cymothoe hit double digits, posting 11.7 knots.

“That’s the fastest this boat has ever gone,” said owner David Alldian. Needless to say, it might well be the fastest any Sabre has ever sailed.

The roughest stretch of the race was on the east side of the island, from Old Harbor to 1BI, the aid to navigation off the north end of the island. The wind built to 30 knots in that stretch and the seas built to 5 feet. While some had troubles, many scampered through the maelstrom without incident.

“I give the race committee heaps of credit for running that race,” said Ken Read, the president of North Sails who sailed aboard Watermark. “It would’ve been easy for them to say it was too windy, but for many it was an epic day that they’ll remember forever.”

Perhaps the best battle of the week was staged in IRC 1, between Gunther Buerman’s tried and true 52-footer Hooligan and Austin and Gwen Fragomen’s spanking new Interlodge. A 44-footer from the drafting board of Botin Partners in Spain, Interlodge is an HPR

weapon, so says tactician Andy Horton.

“The design brief was for a boat that could beat the HPR 40s,” said Horton. “We did a weather study of places on the East Coast – Newport, Key West, Charleston – and determined that 10 knots was the most common average. It might get stronger later in the day, but the early races would be run in about 10 knots.

It’s an HPR/IRC weapon; no interior, thin foils and fast upwind/ downwind.”

Hooligan won the day’s first race when Interlodge couldn’t live on their competitor’s windward quarter and fell into their dirty air. But Hooligan was OCS in the second race and after re-starting tacked away to the right side of the course, which proved to be the wrong side when a lefty shift came through.

The week wouldn’t be complete without some ingenious boat maintenance, and one of those at the top of the list is Jeff Willis, the dominant winner of the J/44 class with Challenge IV. Willis had been having trouble keeping his propeller on centerline when racing, so he bought a large clamp and attached it to the propeller shaft. “That kept the prop lined up, and we had good starts.”

While the stories of successes, close seconds and close calls fill post regatta conversations on the dock, one underlying theme pervades all – the desire to do it all again in two year’s time.

Principle Race Officer’s Epilogue

The planning for Block Island Race Week takes more than a year with more than 150 volunteers. When we get to regatta time the weather dictates much of our decision-making. Commander’s Weather plays a big part of that and is an important sponsor and part of our team.

The long range forecast didn’t look good for the week. With the very cold water in Block Island Sound, we expected fog which makes our race management more difficult. As each day proceeded the wind and conditions cooperated and we were able to get the races we needed in the bank. The Round the Island was the best we have had in many years and each day the conditions for our windward leeward courses were fantastic as well. We got 11 races in for the series and have had great racing each day of the regatta - more than I could have hoped for in the beginning of the week.

BIRW 25 has simply been a fantastic regatta by standard from a race officers’ prospective.

This week has been the epitome of a well scripted, week-long regatta. It hasn’t been too hot, it hasn’t been too cold, and there has been everything from adequate to great breeze. All of the equipment and running craft needed to operate three courses have been well prepared for trouble-free service. That speaks volumes about the organization and attention to detail that preceded the week and set the stage for the on-water performance.

Most of the White Fleet Race Committee have been together for several Race Weeks and naturally fell into their roles. Part of what made the week special is how easily our new crew meshed and added their skill sets. All of this made it possible to concentrate on the conditions and the set-up of the courses. Not only were all of the functions covered, the observations and suggestions made throughout each day enhanced overall team performance, resulting in smoothly operated, competitive courses.

I don’t believe there is a published list of each of the fleet committees, so I’d like to take this opportunity to thank each member of the White Fleet Team: Tinker Myles, Marc Holdaway, Ellyn Osmond, Leggie Torrey, Geoff and Patsy Ewenson, ‘Charly’ Wullschleger, Aileen Hutchins, Charlie Terry, Kathy Monro, Jill O’Farrell, Dan Rugg, Bruce Harper, Greg Gilmartin, Randy Tankoos, Eric Richards, Jeff Goldring, Bob Monro, John Troy and Tad Sanchez. And a special thanks to Jonathan Asch and Aileen Hutchins for the loan of Huntress, their home, as our signal boat. Please remember that battle scars make for great war stories!

The competitors will be talking about the around the island race for years to come, with tales of the fastest their boat has ever gone. Special accolades to our class winners and all the daily trophy winners. Cymothoe (Sabre 362, Albanese) and Hustler (J/29, Esposito) have posted near perfect scores and Testing Life (Mulhall), with all their junior crew were committee favorites with their check-in routines each day.

Environmental progress at BIRW

By Joe Cooper Sailors are more aware of the delicate balance of forces that make up the ocean than most landsman. If you spend so much time in the playground it is only natural to know much about it. If we think of the ocean as our playground then we have a duty of care to police the playground and keep it clean for all of us. This is one of the major themes behind the Storm Trysail Club’s introduction of sustainable actions for this year’s Race Week.

Working from the 75-point action list that is the Clean Regattas Protocol produced by Sailors for the Sea, the Club took steps towards having a smaller environmental footprint on Block Island. The first action towards a Clean Regatta was the development of an App for Race Week. It was designed to make all the information that skippers, crews, families and followers ashore would need available on any portable device. In concert with, and because of this, Event Chairman Peter Rugg elected to forego the daily print newspaper and make all Race Week news and related media distribution electronic. This eliminated all but one of the daily newspapers, the Friday wrap up edition, (the one in your hands) and all the energy ramifications that producing a daily print paper entailed. The App made available to all, race updates, in some cases, on a minute-by-minute basis, social media feed, news feeds in fact almost everything competitors need, ‘cept a Mt. Gay and tonic.

The most visible action was the introduction of reusable water bottles for the boats and crews.

The idea is to reduce the consumption of single use water bottles. Each entrant received, in the skipper’s registration “goodies” bag, reusable metal water bottles in a number equal to their crew count for the week. Five-gallon water butts with hand pumps from which to fill the water bottles were placed in each of the three marinas where the boats are docked. On Monday morning the water bottle stations used about 1.5 five-gallon jugs, or about 7 gallons. On

Tuesday this was up to 3.5 butts and by Wednesday the count was about 7 and there was a line at the Block Island Boat Basin station.

Another action with a tremendous residual visual impact the club organized was beach clean ups. We partnered with the Newport, RI based Clean Ocean Access non-profit whose signature activity is beach clean ups. With the support from Sailors for the Sea, another Newport-based non-profit beach, clean-ups were organized at three of the Island’s beaches. A total of 15 volunteers collected over 800 items of trash in roughly 20 man-hours. The most common items were plastic shopping bags, plastic food wrappers, and unidentifiable degraded plastic usually about an inch square. Plastic netting, rope, Mylar “congratulations” balloons, building materials and even a BIRW 2015 Mt. Gay hat was recovered. This “take” was arranged onto a display board and in two trash bags and placed in the tent during the evening’s party.

COA Founder and Executive Director Dave McLaughlin says the Block Island Beaches were actually quite clean compared to some of the other beaches in Rhode Island. This is largely due to efforts of the small community on the island that organize their own clean-ups and enforce regulations, such as a ban on bottom cleaning in the Great Salt Pond.

Another important but invisible (to the competitors) action was taken by one of Race Week’s major sponsors, Deepwater Wind. The developers of the first offshore wind farm in the US, off the south-east corner of Block Island, Deepwater Wind purchased renewable energy credits (RECs) of American wind power to offset electricity consumption for BI Race Week. This will help to avoid up to an estimated 4,796 pounds (2 metric tons) of carbon dioxide emissions entering the atmosphere.

If we as sailors are to continue sailing in beautiful venues like Block Island Sound, actions like the ones taken at BIRW 2015 will become more and more common. In a perfect world the playground will never get dirty and so will not need cleaning.

The Abrams Family Trophy is Awarded to Marcy Trenholm Since 1965, the inaugural year of the Storm Trysail Club’s Block Island Race Week (BIRW), sailors have enjoyed the camaraderie and excitement that only a first-class event at a splendid venue can provide. Race Week enjoys strong support from the Storm Trysail Club members and partner companies, but most of the duties performed are done so through a network of volunteers and industry sponsors. It is said that BIRW would not be possible without the kind support of the local friends who reside on the Island, including the Abrams family, whose name is synonymous with, not only the hospitality of the island, but the success of Race Week.

Several perpetual trophies such as the Abrams are awarded at BIRW, mostly named and donated in memory of people who have made significant contributions to sailing. Like BIRW itself, the trophies are awarded “in the spirit of camaraderie, competition and respect for the unique character of the sport of sailing.”

Dedicated by the Storm Trysail Club in 2003, the Abrams Family Trophy is presented to an individual who has made a significant contribution to Block Island Race Week. The trophy, a half-hull model of Inverness (the overall winner of the very first Block Island Race Week in 1965), was awarded in 2013 to Jakab Isbrandtsen.

This year’s recipient is Marcy Trenholm from Larchmont, NY. Marcy has been the Executive Director of the Storm Trysail Club for 26 years and is retiring July 3rd. Having managed 15 Race Weeks during her time, she has become an indispensible part of this event. “Marcy has run Storm Trysail to the benefit of all the members, but especially as support for a long line of Commodores including Jack King, Butch Ulmer, Bill Foulk, Jr., Bob Towse, John Storck, Jr., John Osmond, Dick Neville, Rich duMoulin, John Fisher, Jim Bishop, Eric Kreuter, and Nick Langone, said Commodore Lee Reichart. “Marcy exudes all of the traits that a recipient of the Abrams Family Trophy should.”

Fisher, Jack Fisher and Scott Banerjee have worked the clothing, raffle, and shore-side logistics at Race Week. To this group, raised here at Race Week, Marcy is a beloved member of the family. “It’s hard to take a week off from work, and we weren’t really thinking of even coming to Race Week this year,” said Annie Fisher. “But when we found out that Marcy was retiring, we all decided that we needed to be here with her one more time.”

Marcy was right back in the duty office seeing the rest of the week through, doing what she does best…make it look easy. Congratulations on the Abrams Trophy and the great success you’ve helped make Block Island Race Week for so many years, Marcy!

Police Pooch Sgt. Marcus was acquired from his European trainer via funding provided to the Police Force by the Storm Trysail membership and foundation.

The Storm Trysail Club is very thankful for the relationship it has with Block Island residents and businesses. “Block Island has been a wonderful host for race week for 50 years, and through the raffle we can give back to the community that gives our regatta such a fantastic setting,” said Event Chairman Peter Rugg. Through the years the Race Week Raffle has raised more than $100,000 in island donations.

A Rolex for Interlodge With an overall victory in Tuesday’s Round the Island Race, Austin and Gwen Fragomen, owners of the Botin 44 Interlodge (Newport, RI) won the Island Sailing Club of Cowes Perpetual Trophy along with a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner timepiece.

Island Sailing Club of Cowes (ISCC) Perpetual Trophy was presented to Block Island Race Week just before the inaugural BIRW in 1965. The thought at the time of the trophy’s bequeathing was that the Round the Island Race at Block Island closely replicated the Isle of Wight’s Round the Island Race, which was inaugurated in 1935. The trophy is awarded to the boat determined by organizers to have turned in the top overall performance from among all boats with IRC or PHRF ratings. Interlodge’s ‘Round the Island elapsed time was 02:12:19, which results in the best corrected speed between the class winners.

2015 Block Island Race Week Perpetual Trophy Winners EVERETT B. MORRIS MEMORIAL TROPHY Caminos, Donald Filippelli First awarded in 1975, and rededicated in 1991, it is awarded to the Block Island Race Week participant who wins his class and, in the judgment of the race committee and the Commodore, has made the Best Overall Performance.

THE ISBRANDTSEN OVERALL PERPETUAL TROPHY Hustler, John/Tony Esposito First awarded in 1975, and rededicated in 1991, it is awarded to the participant with the “Second Best Performance” for the week.

ISLAND SAILING CLUB OF COWES TANKARD Interlodge, Austin & Gwen Fragomen First awarded in 1965, it commemorates the link between Block Island Race week and Britain’s Cowes Week, after which Block Island Week is patterned. It is awarded to the boat with the top overall performance in the ‘Round the Island Race.

JUSTIN WASLEY MEMORIAL TROPHY Caminos, Donald Filippelli Rededicated to Block Island Race Week in 1991, it is presented to the Overall Winner of the One Design Class with the largest number of entries.

JOHN ALDEN REED PERPETUAL TROPHY Ranger, U.S.N.A. Midshipmen Awarded to the best performance by a Service Academy Yacht GOVERNORS PERPETUAL TROPHY Music, James Blakemore, South Africa First awarded in 1983 to recognize the international competitors at

Block Island Race Week, it is presented to the foreign yacht with the Best Performance for the Week

displayed an outstanding example of good sportsmanship during Block Island Race Week.

VINTAGE YACHT TROPHY Hustler, John/Tony Esposito Awarded in memory of Hugh Kilmer since 1971, it is presented to the yacht 25 years or older, substantially unaltered, with the best performance for the week, as judged by best percentage placement within its class

GEM TROPHY- Ranger, U.S.N.A. Midshipmen The GEM Trophy memorializes the ideals of long-time club member, the late William Ziegler, III, an accomplished sailor who frequently raced his yachts named GEM at Block Island Race Week with young sailors, some of whom were recruited off the dock on race day. The trophy will be presented to the best yacht with at least 70 percent of its skipper and crew, male or female, younger than 25 years of age. Donated by Steve and Heidi (Ziegler) Benjamin.

SHELTER ISLAND YACHT CLUB TEAM RACE TROPHY Storm Trysail Red, Spookie, Christopher Dragon, Vamp Three of yachts racing in two or more classes constitute a team representing a yacht club or sailing association.
