Bringin’ It Home With the end of a regatta to remember in sight, two sailors will be leaving with a brand new Rolex: One for a triumph in the Round the Island Race and another because they bought the winning ticket in the Storm Trysail Club Raffle. With eight continental or regional championships on the line among 19 classes, who will bring home the silver from Block Island Race Week XXV? Yesterday’s easterly brought thick fog, cancelling competition in three of the four fleets, but the soup had thinned sufficiently by 1400 for a race in the Cruising Spinnaker, Cruising Non-Spinnaker, PHRF 4 and 5, and Double-handed classes on the Green circle. “Yesterday was extremely frustrating,“ said On-theWater Co-Chair Dave Brennan. “RC boats were outside the harbor monitoring the racecourses all morning. The fog lifted for a brief period, but it returned and settled in. Because the Green Fleet was close to the island, they had less fog and

were able to go ahead. We intend to run two races today!” Jim Anderson and Eric Kreuter, sailing Jim’s Farr 395 Skye (Riverside, CT) in the Double-handed class, were undefeated until yesterday, when they were outfoxed by Adrian Little and Jonathan Ricci aboard the former’s J/100 Flashpoint (Westport, CT), although Skye’s 1-1-1-2 is unassailable in the first-ever two-up class at Race Week. “I think we were more aggressive than Jim and Eric were, and we didn’t make any mistakes,” said Adrian. “We put our spinnaker up on the second leg, which they didn’t do, and that helped us take a lot of ground off them. Double-handing is challenging, and it’s good for my skills…we’re always doing something. It was great of our Race Committee to stick it out and give us a race. They did a stunning job in difficult conditions!” One of this week’s hardest fought battles is taking place in PHRF 5, with Jay Greenfield’s Evelyn 26 Stealth (Noank, CT) one point ahead of Chris Fesenmeyer’s San Juan 30 Air Express (Norwalk, CT), who took yesterday’s bullet. “The fog Storm Trysail Club 2013 Block Island Race Week News • Friday 1

lifted and we had a nice breeze,” said Chris. “My crew was superb today… I’ve got the greatest guys! It was great that the Race Committee got the race in, although none of the other courses sailed and that’s a shame. When you’re here, you want to do some racing!” No skipper on the island is more stoked than Brian Mulhall of Ocean City, NJ, whose Tartan 46 Testing Life is making her competition debut at Race Week. “My wife Deb let me buy this boat because it has a sundeck,” said Brian. “Last winter, I asked the crew I regularly race with on another boat to do one big event with me and this year it’s Block Island Race Week.” As of this morning, Testing Life is tied for second place in the Cruising Non-Spinnaker class with Chris Schneider’s Ericson 39 Rascal (Centerport, NY), behind Burt Keenan’s Cat Ketch 49 Acadia (Hilton Head, SC). “I came here hoping to make mid-fleet, as I have never raced this boat before,” Brian continued. “I can’t believe we’re tied for second. This is a great family event. My 14-year old son Liam is sailing with us, and Deb and my daughter Jenevieva are providing shoreside support. This week has been phenomenal!” Iris Vogel of New Rochelle, NY bought her Soverel 33 Deviation new in 1988, and this is her 25th Block Island Race Week (counting the ones in even-numbered years) with the boat. “Most of our crew have sailed with me for 10 or 15 years, and we’re a group of friends,” said Iris. “My daughter Ray is 19 and she’s been to 18 Race Weeks. She may be the youngest sailor to have done that many, and although she wasn’t crewing as a baby she was on board. She started on the bow at age 13 and she’s on bow this week. She’s a sailing instructor at Huguenot Yacht Club and a member of the Sailing Club at the University of Chicago…she’s very good! Race Week is a tradition for us. We’ve had the same house for 20 years and everyone takes turns cooking, including the two other teenagers on the team. For us, Race Week isn’t about results – it ‘s about having a purpose and having fun. We just love it!” The sailors in the 11-boat Swan 42 Class are relishing some of the tightest races of the week, and giving spectators the most exciting mark roundings. “This is our first New England Championship,” said Class Manager Diana McConnell, “and we chose Race Week because Block is such a special place. People bring their families, and we have a number of boats that sail with spouses. We’ve had a dock party at Payne’s, and we’ve planned a dinner for all of the Swan 42 crews at one of the owner’s homes here on Block. Social activities are helping us build a strong class.” “It’s terrific to see such a big Green Fleet and so many family crews this year,” said Jack Orr, who is sailing on John Schimenti’s Nelson Marek 35 Zefiro Torna (Greenwich, CT). “It’s just like back in the old days.” “I was here in 1965,” said Butch Ulmer, who is calling tactics on Linda & Andrew Weiss’ J/130 Christopher Dragon VIII (Mamaroneck, NY). “Race Week has changed over the years from a social/sailing event to a sailing/ social event, and with the support of generous sponsors it’s a solid event. When I was Race Chair, the club lost money on this event. We had no sponsors and only received money from entry fees and bracelets. With the support of our sponsors today, STC is able to provide top-notch racing and shoreside activities, and that assures the future of a successful event.” Good luck to all competitors today. Come on back to the Block in 2013! ■ Storm Trysail Club 2013 Block Island Race Week News • Friday 3

Today’s Weather, Friday, June 28 It could be a very windy day today. There is an intensifying low in eastern NY but there’s a warm front racing back to the North. Surface winds look to average 17-23 knts, but winds at 500-1000 feet are 40-45 knots. Shower/thunderstorm could produce gusts over 40 knts – these are most likely in the 1st half of the morning. Skies may clear late morning/afternoon with only an isolated shower/ thunderstorm during the afternoon. The morning will start with strong southerlies! Expect seas from the South-Southwest up to 5-7 feet – this could be a wet and wild day!

Faces at the Races Carl Olsson Morning Glory

What did you and your crew do during postponement? My crew and I navigated to see where the committee boat was and waited patiently for them to show up. The committee boat showed up about a half hour later, so I lit a cigar and waited. In the future, what ideas do you have that you would like to see in the event of a postponement? It may be fun to have remote control boat racing here on the docks. Model boat sailing is huge and that would be nice for all the crews. You could charge folks to race the boats and the proceeds can go to charity. Josh Richline Two Feathers What did you and your crew do during postponement? We drank a lot of beer and told a lot of bad jokes! Fifty percent of our crew was sleeping. We listened to other boats broadcasting music and thoughts through the radio. In the future, what ideas do you have that you would like to see in the event of a postponement? We’ve traveled all the way from Texas to race; that’s why everyone is here. It’d be nice if they could bring us in a mile where there’s more visibility and good breeze and let us race.

Storm Trysail Club 2013 Block Island Race Week News • Friday 13

Well Done, STC The Storm Trysail Club is fortunate to have over 100 volunteers that have contributed an immense amount of work and dedication to the 25th anniversary Block Island Race Week. Their ability to carry out responsibilities with excellence and humility is what makes this event one of the greatest regattas in the U.S. Dick Neville I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of Lee Reichart the volunteers that have contributed so much to this event to make it one of the best ever. The 25th Anniversary of Block Island Race Week could not have been as spectacular as it was, without you all. Three individuals in particular have gone above and beyond over the past two years to truly raise the bar on this event. Lee Reichart, Dick Neville and Rick Lyall have put a tremendous amount of effort into this Race Week, literally talking almost daily to make sure all bases were covered and new ideas implemented. Vice Commodore and Race Week Chair Lee Reichart is known for his detail and management expertise. Lee always kept us on track budget-wise and worked his backside off to avoid spending what we could not afford. He is the driving force on all the creative aspects that made the 25th Anniversary so special. Lee created a new system on the Storm Trysail website that provides members and non-members with timely information about the goings-on in the club and expectations leading up to Race Week. He made contact with numerous individuals like Robin Aisher,

Admiral of the Island Sailing Club of Cowes (UK) to include them in the celebrations. Robin handed out the Island Club Tankard to the winner of the ‘Round the Island Race. Competition Chairman Rick Lyall took charge and ran with it. Rick’s primary responsibility was to increase the number of entries to 165 from 134 in 2011. It didn’t Rick Lyall take long for Rick to overachieve his objective. Rick is a very active racer. He has a J/109, Storm, and recruited an entry list beyond our expectations. Rick ‘worked the street,’ contacting the fleet captains and class managers of East Coast classes to set up championship series. Thanks to Rick, we have eight championship titles to announce tonight. Dick Neville, the On-The–Water Chair, has been involved in race management on an international level. Dick brings this experience to us and has assisted to incorporate some solid ideas to make the event run smoothly. For example, Dick foresaw problems with NOR and SIs and addressed them immediately with amendments and worked on scoring issues. He was also responsible for the selection of the Storm Trysail Race Committee volunteers and Principal Race Officers. With his insight, experience and professionalism, Dick helped make this week terrific and exciting. Thanks, guys!
