Dad?” calls at midnight. It also means that my daughter can drive herself to rowing practice at 5am. And yes, I do worry about her scraping the side of the car pulling into the driveway. Mostly, though, it means more independence for her and that my little girl is growing up. It is a profound change that she is thrilled about and I worry about. In the words of Sam Cooke from his epic, “A Change Is Gonna Come”: “It’s been a long, a long time coming, But I know my change has got to come, oh yeah” Somebody once said: “Change is inevitable. Growth is optional.” Certainly my daughter’s ability to drive a car is a change… but how she handles the additional responsibility that comes with driving will say a lot about her growth into adulthood. I’m actually looking forward to those years with her, and her younger sister. Of course, the notion of change is on all of our minds as we work through the current economic situation surrounding us. It affects every one of us in big and little ways. Certainly people trying to decide whether to sell their home or buy a new home are tuned into the changing news, looking for signals. It seems that each day brings a story about housing sales. Recently the news has been encouraging… three straight months of increases in home sales nationally. The combination of low mortgage interest rates, the first-time homebuyer tax credit, lower home prices and lots of inventory has certainly been a stimulus for growth. By the time you read this my daughter will have a bunch more

(hopefully) accident-free miles on the odometer. And there will have been a bunch of stories about the ups and downs of the economy. But the reality is there has been enormous change in real estate and it will continue to change. And with change, there are opportunities for growth. I’m very sure my daughter will continue driving well and I’m actually very sure the economy will improve… I can’t tell you exactly when. . . but change is absolutely coming.
