Back to Music. Back to Missoula. Get ready, Missoula—your symphony is just getting started, and we couldn’t be more excited for a triumphant return to live music alongside our new Music Director, Julia Tai. When we said we wouldn’t skip a beat, we meant it. We streamed Symphony concerts for the first time ever, and saw overwhelming community support as folks tuned in from their living rooms. But let’s face it—nothing beats the magic of coming together for live, in-person, symphonic music. This season is about returning to the Missoula we love, in-person and in harmony. It’s about getting to know our new Music Director and welcoming her home as she gets to know this community. This is the Missoula Symphony you know, and a season you don’t want to miss. Welcome back to music, Missoula.
As we return to live performances in the Dennison Theatre, please know that the health of our musicians, patrons, volunteers, and staff is very important to us. We continue to follow local and state health guidelines for COVID, as well as recommendations from the CDC. As of press time, there are no mask or vaccine requirements in Missoula County. We plan to have hand sanitizer stations around the theatre and ask patrons to please stay home if you exhibit any COVID symptoms. We also ask everyone to please be patient as we navigate the return to live symphonic music. We will continue to monitor the situation and should we determine that changes to the season are necessary, we will adapt as quickly as possible and inform everyone of any schedule changes.

Your New Music Director: Julia Tai Praised by the Seattle Times as “poised yet passionate,” Julia Tai is one of today’s most dynamic young conductors on the international stage, and now the first female music director in the Missoula Symphony Orchestra’s history. Born in Taipei, Taiwan, Ms. Tai began her violin studies at age four and piano at eight. She received her Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music, and she holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in orchestral conducting from the University of Washington. Ms. Tai is thrilled to move to Missoula with her husband, Matthew, and their daughter, Natalie, and we can’t wait to welcome them into our creative community.

Welcome back to live music at the Dennison Theatre! I'm thrilled to welcome you back to enjoy the magic of live symphonic music, and I can't wait to start my first in-person season as your new Music Director! This season, we have ambitious and diverse musical offerings, from beloved classics such as Beethoven's Emperor Piano Concerto, Berlioz' Symphonie fantastique and Duruflé's Requiem, to lesser-heard masterworks like the music of English composer and suffragette, Ethel Smyth, or William Grant Still's Afro-American Symphony–the first symphony ever written by an African-American composer. In addition to our Holiday Pops! concert tradition, we will expand our programming to include a Broadway concert in June–My Fair Lady in Concert! And we will continue our commitment to education and outreach, producing our annual family and youth concert: Once Upon A Symphony. We were fortunate to continue to play symphonic music during the pandemic through our virtual season, and continue to make music thanks to your generous support of the Missoula Symphony Orchestra and Chorale. I invite you to join us in this new season, with new sounds and new spirits. I couldn't be more thrilled to call Missoula my new home and celebrate life, music and togetherness with you all. See you soon in the Dennison Theatre!
Julia Tai

Missoula Symphony Chorale We are pleased to present the Missoula Symphony Chorale twice this concert season and are thrilled our singers can perform for you live. While their moving performances of Shalom and We Shall Overcome were spectacular during our virtual season last year, nothing beats hearing the Missoula Symphony Chorale sing in person.
After a year of meeting and performing virtually, the chorale is looking forward to returning to live rehearsals and performances. We're excited to join the orchestra in bringing you a number of holiday favorites in December. In April, we'll again join the orchestra for a performance of the Duruflé Requiem. This is a piece that I personally love. The piece, composed in 1947, is based on Medieval Gregorian Chants. Duruflé was influenced by the Impressionistic harmonies and compositional techniques of Debussy, Fauré, and Messiaen. The result is beautiful and ethereal. Welcome back Missoula Symphony and Chorale supporters! We look forward to seeing you in person! Dean Peterson Conductor - Missoula Symphony Chorale

Great Music Begins With You Your support of the Symphony is so greatly appreciated! Thanks to the greater Missoula community, we were able to offer a virtual concert season during the pandemic when many orchestras around the world could not. Now, as we look ahead to a season that feels more “normal” we still must rely on the financial support of our community since ticket sales make up only 30% of our operating budget. There are many ways to support your Missoula Symphony Orchestra and Chorale. Your donation allows us to achieve our mission of musical excellence in performance and education while continuing to serve our community as one of the very finest orchestras in the western region. We look forward to sharing symphonic music with our Missoula friends— old and new—and are grateful for your support.
