THE BEAT OF MISSOULA
Moving to the Beat of Missoula that’s what your Missoula Symphony promises this season. We are a community that often moves to the beat of a different drummer. MisSOULa isn’t just a bumper sticker—it’s what our community is all about and your Missoula Symphony is proud to offer concertgoers a season filled with music that will stir your soul!
Our dynamic 2022-2023 season features world-class violinist Robert McDuffie—who just happens to perform with the bass player from R.E.M.; a Montana Symphony written by a local legend; our first-composer-in residence, Jonathan Bailey Holland joined by the amazing arx duo for the world premiere of his percussion concerto; and our Symphony Chorale performing the stirring Dona Nobis Pacem. Music Director Julia Tai has thoughtfully curated a concert season you won’t want to miss. It’s music that matters.
Because music is the soul of our city!
Our season ticket subscription includes six (6) concerts, including Holiday Pops! and our Broadway concert. Family concert tickets are sold separately.

Welcome to our 2022-23 season! I hope you will join us for a season of diverse and community-minded programming, from magnificent classics such as Mahler’s First Symphony and Richard Strauss’ Four Last Songs, to important female composers of the 19th and 20th century. We can’t wait to share with you a season of glorious music that brings our community together.

Being a female music director, I love to tell stories of amazing women. This season we will perform a symphony by one of the most brilliant musicians of the 19th century, French composer and pianist Louise Farrenc. She was the only female professor at the Paris Conservatory in the 19th century—the only woman for one hundred years! Her beautiful symphony is rooted deeply in the classical tradition, recalling the music of Beethoven yet exploring the musical revolution of the Romantic era. We will also feature two incredibly talented living female composers—Joan Tower’s Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman and Jennifer Higdon’s Fanfare Ritmico are both testaments to the talent and persistence of these remarkable women making a stand in the male-dominated world of music
Another exciting and groundbreaking project for our orchestra is our first “Composer-in-Residence” at the Missoula Symphony. Jonathan Bailey Holland is a distinguished professor of composition at Boston Conservatory at Berklee and recently named the Head of the School of Music at Carnegie Mellon University. He is writing a new concerto for the electrifying percussionists Mari Yoshinaga and Garrett Arney, known as the arx duo, who will be joining us for our March concert.
Of course, our season wouldn’t be complete without Holiday Pops! and our fun and educational Family concert. Finally, we will again perform a concert from the Broadway stage—keep an eye out for more details! Your Missoula Symphony is always Moving to the Beat of Missoula—Because music is the soul of our city. I look forward to seeing you this season!

For more than 17 years, Missoulians have set aside the second Sunday in August as the day for Symphony in the Park. This year is no exception—mark your calendars for Sunday, August 14th at 7:00 p.m., Caras Park, for this year’s concert, “Music for the Soul.” Bring your lawn chairs and blankets for a summer evening filled with the sounds of Aretha Franklin, John Williams, Stephen Sondheim and much more. We will again have our food vendors and a bar, to purchase food and drink.
This FREE outdoor concert is a favorite event as summer winds down and we hope you’ll join us!

Since 2019, we have partnered with the Missoula Food Bank and Community Center for a food drive to help nourish our community. There is no admission to Symphony in the Park but we do ask concertgoers to please bring non-perishable food items to donate to the Food Bank. One in four Missoulians now relies on the Food Bank for support.

Our season opener features the internationally renowned violinist, Robert McDuffie, performing alongside his talented sister, Margery McDuffie Whatley, a member of the piano faculty at the University of Montana. McDuffie’s Grammy award-winning career finds him performing alongside major symphonies of the world, leading his Rome Chamber Music Festival and playing major compositions by Philip Glass. This talented brother and sister duo will play Felix Mendelssohn’s fantastic Concerto for Violin and Piano, written for the composer himself and his talented sister, Fanny Mendelssohn.
Opening the concert is Fanny Mendelssohn’s Overture in C, and the concert finishes with another amazingly talented female composer of 19th century France, Louise Farrenc. Her beautiful Symphony No. 3 is a rare gem of the romantic era that is too seldom performed.

Friday, 7:30 p.m. Sunday, 3:00 p.m.
Our November Masterworks concert focuses on Superheroes in music. Join us as we honor a legendary composer from our own community—the former distinguished professor of composition at the University of Montana, Donald Johnston. His Symphony No. 4 “Lewis and Clark Symphony” exemplifies the brave spirits of the first explorers and the soundscape of the openness of the West.
The concert begins with a powerful piece Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman, written by Joan Tower, who was lauded by The New Yorker as “one of the most successful woman composers of all time.” Tower composed the piece in response to Copland’s famous Fanfare for the Common Man. Rounding out the program are Jean Sibelius’ atmospheric Lemminkäinen Suite—a symphonic poem about the Finnish mythological hero—and John Williams’ Superman March.

Our last masterworks concert of the season presents the contrasting themes of war and peace, with the hope of grace and goodwill. Vaughan Williams’ powerful Dona Nobis Pacem, a heartrending cry for peace in the time of war, closes the program with Fanfare on Amazing Grace, as the coda.

2022-2023 season and performing for you at the Dennison Theatre. We join the Orchestra for the first time this season, in December, as both ensembles perform at the ever-popular Holiday Pops! Concerts. These festive concerts have become the official kickoff to the holiday season in Missoula and we enjoy performing a variety of familiar and new holiday selections.
In April, we join the orchestra for a performance of the Dona Nobis Pacem by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Vaughan Williams composed this plea for peace in 1936 as fears of impending war (WWII) were being realized. Many of the texts, selected by the composer, come from the Latin Mass as well as three poems by Walt Whitman. The phrase Dona nobis pacem (“Give us peace”), is presented in many different settings and is central to this powerful masterwork.
