Missoula’s outdoor markets draw plenty of travelers from near and far, but locals look forward to strolling the market streets week after week because small-town pride runs deep here, shopping local is a community value and, quite frankly, everyone’s got their Saturday morning ritual, and here, it often involves a farmers market favorite.
HUCKLEBERRY HEAVEN: When huckleberry season is in full swing (August through September), you’ll find quart and gallon-sized bags of the coveted berry scattered throughout the market. If you manage to snag some, good luck not eating the whole lot before you make your way to the other side of the street. MORELS OR ELSE: You might call it an obsession. From April to August, the elusive morel mushrooms are popping up near cottonwood-lined river bottoms and burn areas, and some of the dedicated hunter-gatherers who are lucky enough to spot them and pluck them from the ground sell them at the market, making it a little easier for everyone to get their hands on some…if you’re lucky. MELON MADNESS: You’ll not find a better melon west of the Mississippi. Dixon Melons are a Missoula market hot commodity, and for good reason. Try their “Candy Girls” cross between a cantaloupe and a honey dew, or their “Sinful” tropical melon.
