WELCOME TO POLSON Polson is a charming lakeshore community located on the Flathead Indian Reservation at the south end of the beautiful Flathead Lake in northwest Montana. It’s bordered by the rugged, snowcapped Mission Mountains to the east and the broad, sweeping Mission Valley to the south. Flathead Lake is the largest natural freshwater lake in the United States, west of the Mississippi River. Studies at the Flathead Biological Station show that water quality in the lake is among the cleanest in the world. Polson is full of rich culture and traditions that are celebrated in its several historical museums and art galleries. Residents spend their summer days soaking up the sun, recreating on the lake or rafting down the river. Summer theatre, music and film festivals make for a vibrant art scene. Downtown Polson is full of locally owned small businesses as well as a brewery and multiple dining options, and it’s always busy with annual events, like the Flathead Cherry Festival, 4th of July Celebration, and Memorial Day Parade. Winter kicks off with the Annual Parade of Lights and you’ll find locals enjoying the seasonal cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and ice fishing on the frozen bays. Polson is a wonderful place not just because of the natural beauty, but because of the people who call it home. Rooted in small-town values, these friendly locals won’t be shy in telling you exactly why they love living in “The Last Best Place.”

A TRIBAL NATION: CULTURE & HERITAGE Exploring the Flathead Indian Reservation
Montana is home to seven tribal nations, including the Flathead Indian Reservation where Polson is located (at the southern end of Flathead Lake). Home to the federally-recognized Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, the region is known for remarkable beauty and recreation opportunities and a vast array of wildlife. The reservation is larger than the state of Rhode Island, and the population of the tribes is roughly 7,500 members with about two-thirds living on or near the reservation. The tribe’s government includes members of the Bitterroot Salish, Kootenai and Pend d’Oreille tribes. In 1979, the tribes established the Mission Mountain Tribal Wilderness. This is the only true tribal wilderness in the country and supports populations of such animals as grizzly and black bears, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, two species of deer, elk and many smaller species.
Montana is home to seven tribal nations.
Within the reservation and not far from Polson you’ll find noteworthy destinations to add to your adventure itinerary. At the
6
center of the reservation is the 18,500-acre National Bison Range, home to roughly 350 bison, as well elk, deer, pronghorn antelope, bighorn sheep and a variety of birds. The range is open sunrise to sunset and includes three wildlife drives. The West Loop and Prairie Drive are short year-round drives. Red Sleep Mountain Drive is open mid-May to Mid-October. It’s a two-hour 19-mile loop with switchbacks and 2,000 feet of elevation gain. Make sure to bring your camera and binoculars or spotting scope.

The tribes purchased Kerr Dam located on the Flathead River and it has been renamed Séliš Ksanka Ql’ispé. The 541-foot-long dam stands 54 feet higher than Niagara Falls and produces over a million kilowatts of electricity annually. Reached by a 1,000foot boardwalk, the dam overlook offers an up-close look at the falls and amazing canyon views. The overlook can be a little tricky to find. From Polson, take Kerr Dam Road for 2.2 miles, and then turn right to stay on Kerr Dam Road for another 2.1 miles. Turn right again for .5 miles, and then
The National Bison Range
BISON GRAZE ON THE GRASSY HILLSIDES OF THE NATIONAL BISON RANGE.
In the late 1800s, North America’s wild bison population was at an all-time low with a population of only 100. Since 1908, the National Bison Range has played an important role in the successful recovery of bison. The fact that these majestic mammals still roam the landscape is one of the finest accomplishments in the history of the National Wildlife Refuge System. Come witness these wild wanderers for yourself.
one last right turn gets you to the top of the overlook stairs. If you are in the area you should be able to search for “Vista Point” or “Kerr Dam Overlook Trailhead” through Google Maps. Just south of Polson in Pablo, the Ninepipe National Wildlife Refuge is a pristine wetland complex located in the center of a glacial terminal moraine. The wetlands support an abundance of waterfowl species and are an important Canada Goose breeding ground. These wetlands have also provided the habitat for reintroduction of trumpeter swans. This area is a hot spot for observing predatory birds during winter months. Also located in Pablo, The People’s Center is a unique cultural center highlighting the heritage of the Salish, Kootenai and Pend d’Oreille tribes. Visit the museum and gift shop and participate in educational activities, history presentations, beading classes and gatherings like pow wows.

Total acreage for all cherry orchards in the Flathead Valley is more than 500 acres.
82 orchards are co-op members and more than 50 orchards are not. The co-op crop last year was nearly 2 million pounds. This amount is on the rise as several new orchards start coming into production. The most abundant variety of cherry amongst the co-op orchards is now the Lapin, followed by Skeena, then Lambert, Sweetheart and lastly Rainier.
Considering all orchards,
Lambert and Lapin are probably of equal production. (The Lambert

A summer on Flathead Lake isn’t complete without a handful of freshly picked Flathead cherries. Each year Lake County residents wait in anticipation from first bloom to first bite. The summer icon is plastered on buildings, roadside stands and billboards, and is celebrated each July during the Flathead Cherry Festival in downtown Polson. In 1893, the first cherry orchard was planted by Mrs. John Wood and her sister Mrs. Margaret Estey on their property in Woods Bay, namesake of the Wood family. It wasn’t until the 1920s that commercial cherry growing gained success in the state. By the 1940s, the Flathead Lake area had become the fourth-largest sweet cherry producing area in the United States. Most cherries are grown in small, family-owned orchards that are passed down from generation to generation. The unique microclimate around Flathead Lake is the only area in the state where cherries grow on a large commercial basis. The climate is moderated by the vast waters of the lake, and the bedding is made up of rocky, porous glacial till that allows for well-drained soil. Warm sunny summer days and cooler evenings make for ideal growing conditions necessary for sweet, juicy Flathead cherries. Harvest typically takes place in late July, but some varieties, such as Sweethearts, are harvested as late as mid-August. Hundreds of migrant workers from the west coast arrive here every season to help with harvest. Cherries are sold to local businesses, on roadside stands and to the cherry co-op located on Finley Point. Co-op cherries are shipped to central Washington where they are packed by a large state-of-the-art cherry warehouse and marketed all over the world.

WINTER FROLIC in the Flathead Valley Hilary Lozar
Winter in Polson is truly the most wonderful time of year. The Polson Parade of Lights kicks off the holiday season with businesses gathering downtown for hot cocoa and cider, music and festive parade floats. Outdoor activities don’t stop just because the snow flies. Locals spend the season cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and ice fishing on the frozen bays. The Mission Valley Ice Arena Association has plans to build a fully enclosed, state-of-the-art ice rink facility, open to all. MVIAA is actively raising funds to provide yearround recreational and competitive activities for the benefit of residents and visitors of all ages to the Flathead Indian Reservation and Mission Valley. Their goal is to build a multifunctional ice rink facility that will encourage and promote the health, social and economic interests of the Mission Valley community. ICE FISHING ON FLATHEAD LAKE. This facility will include all the features necessary to attract teams and individuals for a multitude of events, performances and public ice opportunities in the slower time of the year for the surrounding communities, bringing economic stimulation to the Mission Valley when it is needed most. As one of several outreach activities, the MVIAA has been hosting an annual WinterFest at Polson’s Riverside Park. This event occurs in February, and features a range of fun and free games and activities for families. The primary activity is broomball, which is very similar to hockey but with far less equipment required. The MVIAA provides several sets of broomball equipment, which allows anyone who is interested to give it a try without having to bring anything to the event. The MVIAA sees WinterFest as a chance to provide opportunities for kids and adults to get active and get hooked on some of the activities that the future ice rink will provide. MVIAA welcomes any and all who are interested to come participate! For more information, visit the MVIAA website or Facebook page. missionvalleyicearena.com facebook.com/missionvalleyicearena

Flathead Lake is the 79th largest natural freshwater lake in the world, and 1 of the cleanest. Thanks to the lake’s 2 major tributaries, the Flathead and Swan Rivers, it typically takes 2.2 years for the water in Flathead Lake to be completely replaced.
Hydroelectric Highlight The lake level and its outflow are regulated by Séliš Ksanka Ql’ispé (SKQ) Dam at the south end of the lake. SKQ Dam is managed by Energy Keepers Inc., and is the first major hydropower facility to be fully owned and operated by a federally recognized Native American tribe in the United States.
Worth its Weight
Economists estimate that Flathead Lake boosts shoreline property values by $6-$8 million. Nature-based tourism accounts for roughly 25% of the $7.8 billion annual economy of Flathead and Lake Counties.
Catch of the Day Flathead Lake was originally home to 11 native fish species. Since the late 1880s, more than 20 species of nonnative fishes have been Introduced—both by fisheries managers and illegally—to enhance angling opportunities. As a result, Flathead Lake is currently dominated by nonnative species.
Don’t Move a Mussel
Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS), such as invasive mussels, can adversely impact our environment and economy. Preventing infestation in the Flathead watershed is a high priority. AIS inspections are mandatory for all watercraft before launching, including motorized, commercially-hauled, and non-motorized boats.

It may be bold to say that Richwine’s Burgerville has the best burgers in America, but the consistent lineup of cars at the window speaks for itself, and, trust us, it’s well worth the wait. The 100 percent bull-meat patties are carefully crafted with the family’s secret recipe that makes up the signature Royal Burger. You can probably count on one hand the number of Polson businesses that have remained family owned and operated for more than 50 years. Richwine’s Burgerville was opened on April 20, 1962 by Enoch and Lucille Richwine. They first leased a building and equipment next to where Richwine’s Burgerville now stands. By 1968, they had become so successful they were able to construct the perfect brick building of their own design, which
still stands today. Enoch retired in the late 80s and his son Shane took over the family business in 1989. Although he had “retired,” Enoch was still invested in his family and their success so he would still come out every day to help make the hamburger patties. Even at 87, Lucille continued to assist where needed up until her passing in 2015. Shane battled cancer for the last few years of his life and passed away in 2009. Today the family tradition is carried on by Marcia Richwine-Moen, Enoch and Lucille’s only daughter. In honor of her brother, Marcia donates proceeds from the “Bernie Burger” to the American Cancer Society. Polsonites have grown up counting down to opening day at Richwine’s and have created their own family traditions of getting Royal Burgers, fries and milkshakes. Marcia said she has seen everything from prom dates to wedding parties come through the drive-thru and has joked, “Probably half of Polson has worked here.”

What matters most to Richwine’s has been clear from the start. Through ups and downs, sickness and health, their success can be attributed to family values, dedication and love from their community. Marcia believes, “Burgerville customers are more like family and their continued support has kept the business alive.”

Montana-Made Cheese Tempts Tastebuds
By Kristen Inbody Great Falls Tribune
Reprinted with permission
As she stuck labels on her cheeses, fromagère Wendi Arnold fielded a call from a customer who called to say he’d gotten his order and found it great. “It’s amazing the level of personal connection,” Arnold said. “I love being a small business owner.” In a solar-powered, cheery yellow building not far from the shore of Flathead Lake, Arnold and her husband make batches of cheese, 200 to 250 pounds a week in their 300-gallon vat. Flathead Lake Cheese has become a tourist attraction—something Arnold never dreamed would happen. She’s added a sliding window for walk-ups. Restaurants in Glacier National Park serve Flathead Lake Cheese’s Wisp o’ Smoke Doorstop Gouda for tourists who want to taste flavors of the area. With Glacier’s demand, the

smoked cheese, smoked over local apple wood, ran out first in 2015. Arnold’s husband is from Wisconsin and worked for a company that sells cheese-making supplies. Arnold suggested they try their hand at cheese making. They took classes at the Vermont Institute for Artisan Cheese in Burlington. “We started with small batches, and I liked it. We got the locals hooked and decided to go full bore,” she said. “I’ve used the term ‘cheese crack’; it’s addictive.” Selling cheese curds supported the whole enterprise the first year while the other cheeses aged. The creamery has several flavors of gouda and a feta. She’d like to do a blue cheese, but the fora that makes it is “very friendly,” and given to spreading. One of the most unusual gouda flavors is Big Chai Gouda, which is a
collaboration with Tipu’s Chai, another Polson business. The cheese is rich with cloves, ginger, cardamom and black pepper. “It’s the perfect 20-minute vacation to curl up with that on toast,” she said. Arnold made a “hoppin’ mad” cheese, too, just to try “to do something that hadn’t been done before.” The result was a fun, flavorful cheese that pairs well with beer. She’s done a few cheese tastings and has space for a demonstration kitchen. After nine months of aging, the cheese is harder, rich in flavor with lactic acid crystals. “Aged cheese is not supposed to be sliceable into thin slices,” she said. “It’s not like grocery store cheese that stays the same gummy cheese over time thanks to chemicals.”

The cheese has to be flipped every other day to keep the moisture content even. “The hardest part of the business has been the distribution,” she said. “Western Montana Growers Co-op does a great job delivering to a wide range, but Montana is so darn large.” Arnold sells at Kalispell, Whitefish, Missoula and Polson farmers markets, in some stores and online. She aims for a full stock in May and then lets summer traffic chip away. The farmers markets “are happy places, and you get to show the face behind the name so they remember when they see your label in the store,” she said.

BEYOND POLSON
Pablo | Ronan St. Ignatius
Pablo was named for Michel Pablo, a Flathead Chief, rancher and stockman who, by raising bison, is one of the individuals responsible for saving the bison from extinction. Pablo is the headquarters for the Flathead Indian Reservation and lies at the base of the Mission Mountains south of Flathead Lake. Of special interest is the People’s Center which tells the native story of traditions and culture of the tribes which has been passed down orally from generation to generation.
Ronan offers a wealth of resources and enjoyment with the beauty of the Mission Mountains and various sources of fishing and wildlife habitat. Ronan’s Mission Mountain County Visitor Center is a community project serving summer visitors to the Mission Valley. Hiking in the Mission Mountain Wilderness Area by permit, picnicking in the city park, enjoying the Garden of the Rockies Museum and sightseeing along the Flathead River are among the many attractions.

GEOLOGY
Over 10,000 years ago, during the last ice age, the Flathead Valley was buried in ice thousands of feet thick. An ice dam created Glacial Lake Missoula. The ice dam formed and broke dozens of times, causing extreme flooding in the Columbia River all the way to the Pacific Ocean. As the ice age continued, the monstrous glacier slowly pushed south through the Flathead Valley where the north end of the Mission Range split it like a wedge diverting one branch into the Swan Valley and the other into the Mission 42

Valley. We can think of glaciers as natural conveyor belts because they carry massive loads of sediment of all sizes ranging from clay to enormous boulders. Where glaciers end, they dump much of that debris to form a ridge called a moraine. The Polson moraine is especially easy to see because it forms a prominent ridge across the valley. People driving north on Highway 93 get their first view of Flathead Lake just as they reach the crest of the Polson moraine. From David Alt’s “Roadside Geology of Montana” and Flathead Lakers
