WINTER SEASON THE ROAD TO FREEDOM IS PAVED WITH SNOW

FLOAT THROUGH THE LIGHTEST SNOW ON EARTH Yellowstone Country is well known for its huge mountains, great snow, friendly faces and uncrowded slopes. This is the heart of skiing in Montana, with three of the four biggest ski areas in the state. Three diversely different alpine ski experiences surround Yellowstone National Park. Yellowstone Country ski areas are known for incredibly light powder and lots of it. As well, the sun shines on our east side of the divide most days throughout the winter. No crowds and incredible natural beauty are a highlight. Between the diverse trail systems found in Yellowstone National Park, Lone Mountain Ranch in Big Sky, Bohart Ranch in Bozeman and the Rendezvous Trails in West Yellowstone, we have the best Nordic skiing in North America. Yellowstone National Park is a wonderful place to see year-round, but the wintertime has been called its best season. To see the park in its winter beauty, there are four options: Nordic skis, snowshoes, snowmobile tours or snowcoach.

NORDIC SKIING IN YELLOWSTONE COUNTRY Yellowstone Country has one of the longest Nordic seasons in the country (from November into April) and some of the most consistent and finest quality snow, year after year. Factor in the diversity of terrain—both inside Yellowstone National Park and out—the wildlife viewing, world-class track and trail systems and full-service destination facilities that include Lone Mountain Ranch, the number one-ranked Nordic Ski Resort in North America; Bohart Ranch, Bozeman’s own cross-country ski epicenter, situated in the beautiful Bridger Mountains; and the Rendezvous Ski Trail system in West Yellowstone, which is a “first tracks” destination for Nordic ski racers and enthusiasts across the nation, and it’s easy to see what makes Yellowstone Country the Nordic Ski Capital of North America.

THE WORLD’S FIRST NATIONAL PARK YELLOWSTONE PARK is home to 2.2 million acres of natural geysers and bubbling paint pots. Lamar and Hayden Valleys offer some of the best wildlife viewing in America. WINTER ACTIVITIES

During the winter months, activities such as cross-country skiing, daily snowmobile tours, snowshoeing and snowcoach tours allow visitors to experience and explore areas of Yellowstone National Park that are not accessible via other methods or at other times of the year. The park, which many say is at its most serene splendor in the snow-capped winter season, is also less crowded from mid-December to mid-March, affording those who visit at this time of year an unparalleled perspective of this national treasure. Many of the villages and notable areas of the park—Canyon Village and the Mammoth and Old Faithful areas—can be visited during the winter months, although most are accessible only via the oversnow methods mentioned. Lodging throughout the park is available during the winter season, from a yurt experience at Canyon Village to hotel rooms to majestic private suites, all of which boast spectacular views nestled in surreal surroundings.

SNOWMOBILING

WEST YELLOWSTONE West Yellowstone has every reason to consider itself the “Best of the Best” for snowmobiling. There are acres of wide-open spaces for the powder hounds to challenge themselves. Best time to come? Trail riders generally find the time before Christmas and the month of January good choices. The colder nighttime temperatures help to set firm surfaces for comfortable cruising. Once the days begin to get longer–in February and March–our powder snow compacts to allow more ideal conditions for off-trail exploring. The most popular trail is the Two

CROSS-SEASONAL ACTIVITIES

SPRING Montana’s spring is a burst of freshness. Grab your kids and friends and start exploring the clean mountain air. After you catch the last of the spring skiing or crust-cruising, switch gears and enjoy biking through Yellowstone Park, fishing blue-ribbon trout streams or sunny evenings dining outside on a restaurant deck as one of the many things to do.

FALL If you haven’t experienced Yellowstone Country in the fall, put it on your “Must Do” list. Taking a drive through golden autumn foliage, hiking in cool mountain air, spectacular bird watching, world-class fly fishing or—for those who desire—bird or big game hunting are only a few of the activities you can take part in.

COWBOY UP

There’s no place like Montana’s Yellowstone Country for an authentic western experience. Guest ranches are a wonderful way to relax and vacation amid miles of mountains and wide open prairies; day trips are a great way to explore and, for the adventurers, pack trips into the backcountry are available for any length of tour. For spectators, Memorial Day through Labor Day is rodeo season. Nine different towns throughout Yellowstone Country host cowboys and cowgirls from across the nation, and Montana State University—located in Bozeman—is a perennial contender for national honors at the NCAA level. If you’ve never experienced the sport, it’s a boost of pure adrenaline.

A PLAYGROUND FOR ALL AGES Named the number one adventure vacation in the nation by US News and World Report, Yellowstone National Park is truly a playground for all ages. Established in 1872, and covering 2.2 million acres, Yellowstone National Park is the obvious namesake of Montana’s Yellowstone Country. Populated by a large variety of wildlife, including both grizzly and black bears, moose, elk, bison, wolves, eagles and a number of other species, it also provides the backdrop for a large number of geologic and geothermal features, such as geysers, hot springs, rivers, waterfalls and canyons that are the iconic signatures of the park. The park is home to more than 300 different species of birds and its blue-ribbon streams and rivers host Brook, Brown, Cutthroat and Rainbow Trout. Lodging options, including camping, cabins, hotels and lodges, exist within the park and in the gateway cities of West Yellowstone, Gardiner and Cooke City. Three of the park’s five entrances are in Yellowstone Country and are open to vehicles mid-April to mid-November, weather permitting.

With over 1,000 miles of blue-ribbon trout rivers such as the Gallatin, Madison and Yellowstone—as well as numerous tributaries and smaller streams—producing Brook, Brown, Cutthroat and Rainbow Trout in great abundance, Yellowstone Country is a fishing haven for young and old alike. As the primary location for the filming of A River Runs Through It, it’s no wonder

that this corner of Montana has become a fly fishing mandatory. But it’s not all fly vests and wicker creoles, either; plenty of folks hit the rivers with spinning rods. The best fly fishing runs from late June through October, though conditions are often good in March and April before spring runoff. With up to 3,000 fish per mile in the many Yellowstone Country streams, regulations generally allow liberal catch limits. Obtain permission before you enter or cross private land. Consult local fly shops for specific tackle recommendations. For streamflow, license, boating and fishing regulations visit fwp.mt.gov.
