As a textile designer, traditional weaving, printing, stamping, or embellishing of fabric inspires me. For Found, I dug into the art, history and technique of batik production to understand the differences between batik and standard screen-printed cotton.

The amount of time and connection put into each batik fabric by real humans (not machines or mechanized processes) is astounding. The raw fabric is dipped in vats by hand, printed with wax, wrung out by hand, and hung to dry by hand in extended lengths of wet, draping fabric. It is a labor of love.

I created a collection that would use the traditional wax printing with copper stamps (tjaps) but bring in contemporary images and textures. I wanted to bring in textures I found and collected–a piece of string, some printed words from magazine pages, overlapping bits of paper, and X’s. I also used a couple of my favorite prints from previous screen- printed collections to offer a new take on something I already loved, like intersecting lines or triangles.

I worked with the incredibly talented designer and creative director, Myiesha Williams at Windham/Anthology Fabrics. I honestly can’t take full credit for this collection because it was more of a happening between the two of us, a beautiful collaboration. She understood the batik process so well and was able to help me understand things like soda levels (I like light soda, not heavy; the heavier the soda, the more the variation). The result is new and fresh.

I love the warm and cool palettes, plus the third option of creams and charcoals. My favorite thing about batik fabric is the number of unpredictable crinkles and marks left by the wax process. But my second favorite thing is that batik fabrics are not one-sided like screen-printed fabric, making them excellent for making anything with raw edges, insides, or even an easy sarong or scarf. I hope you love playing with Found as much as I loved designing it!
