The artwork in this collection was created by hand, during the long days of Spring, 2020. I had moved with my family to the Catskill Mountains and was recovering from covid. I had not yet shut my studio in Manhattan, thinking that I would return imminently, and had none of my digital drawing tools or equipment with me. I had been considering the idea of creating a fabric collection with hand inked and painted artwork for some time. I was interested in the idea that advances in digitally printed fabric meant that I was not limited to working with solid masses of color. Plot twist! Technology was giving me the opportunity to work by hand!

I turned a guest room into a makeshift studio and put my desk in front of an enormous second story window. We didn't have a screen for the window, but I worked with it open anyway, looking out over the forest that surrounds our house. I had ordered gouache paints, colored pencils and new brushes, and was loving the new mediums. Insects were constantly dropping by and checking on me. Special thanks to photographer, John GruenOne afternoon, on a particularly lovely day, I was sitting at my desk painting a large wild rose. I heard something come into the window, but was very focused on my work, and did not immediately look up. I assumed that it was a wasp or a bee, because there was a soft buzzing sound just above my forehead.

When he realized that it wasn’t a real flower, he turned and flew away, out into the spring sunshine.
I know that this sounds like a tall tale, but it isn’t. I think that moment will stay with me forever, even though most of the last three years feels like a strange blur.

I created this collection... with kids’ rooms in mind: bedding, curtains, big squishy pillows, with a cast of characters inspired by the Catskills and my native state, Vermont. I wanted soft, quiet scenes of sleeping kittens and grazing ponies, setting the tone for safe, peaceful spaces like the ones we’ve done our best to create for our families.
