It all started when my mom would take us downtown to Toledo Blueprint. Every year I would choose an 8.5” x 11” black-bound artist book to doodle in, and they would wrap it in brown kraft paper, a special step that almost made me never want to open the package.
This is where my love of clean, blank books and kraft paper surely began. When I was younger, I was intimidated by those endless white pages and only dared to sign one or two. Now I’m bold, filling and layering pages, returning to the same books over and over, keeping several visual journals in progress at once. With no agenda or direction, my goal is to fill these pages with color and pattern. I am a perpetual collector of art supplies, grabbing every little thing in the world that catches my eye. My studio is a hotbed of colorful scraps and treasures waiting to be glued to folios.
Sketchbook #21 was inspired by pages in one of my small handmade books and a magical little circus that comes to Whidbey Island each summer. This small book is a time capsule, a collection of memories told through color and form. The patchwork pattern of Picnic Grounds reminds me of the way families and friends throw a kaleidoscope of blankets on the field where we picnic and watch the performers’ dazzling show. ~Marcia Derse
