Stenographer’s Notebook
This collection emerged from two artist books I have been gradually developing over the years. The first was a Stenographer’s Notebook from 1936, something I picked up at an estate sale years ago. I am always on the hunt for paper, especially old paper with handwriting. Over the years I overlaid paintings and sketches onto the pages not knowing where it would lead.
With the opportunity to create my second batik collection I revisited the notebook, pulling inspiration from the pages. Favorite watercolor passages, sumi paintings, and hand carved rubber stamps formed the designs for the collection while colorways were borrowed from the palette collection.
I referenced the triangles in Stenographer’s Notebook designs for the hero fabric and used an accordion book I had made from vintage Japanese papers. The aged papers in the book were so beautiful that the open spaces where they were visible became an important element in the overall design. This fabric became a spot to sneak in favorites that didn’t make the final collection. Little golden triangles are a nod to the gold leaf found on the vintage papers.
