Cave Mountain, upon which Windham Mountain sits today, was identified by the State of New York in 1950 as a site to build a ski area, because it offered perfect exposure and slope gradients. In 1960, a group of private investors purchased the land and created Cave Mountain Ski Area. Since opening, the resort has had three different names. It started as Cave Mountain Ski Resort. Snowtime Corporation purchased the resort in 1981 and renamed it Ski Windham. With the re-purchase by private owners in 2005, it became Windham Mountain. The first snowmaking system was installed in 1963. It covered 12 acres of terrain. Today Windham Mountain has over 270 snow guns and covers 98% of its skiable acres. Starting from bare ground, the Mountain can open the A and D lifts and the What’s Next, Wolverine and Wooly Bear trails in as little as 48 hours if conditions are good for snowmaking. Windham’s most powerful snowmaking gun, if left running in one position, can create a 25-foot-deep pile of snow within 24 hours. Windham Mountain’s first lift ticket cost $3. Windham Mountain boasts the biggest number of Certified National Ski Patrol members in the country – 12 in total. Fito Lopez, Windham’s Master Carpenter, has worked at the resort since 1964. He started as a ski instructor. In 1985 Windham Mountain Village was built, adding 100 condominiums on the mountain. The Enclave Club condominiums were built in 2005. The resort purchased the Windham Arms Hotel in 1994 to expand services and offer lodging to guests. The hotel is now named the Winwood Inn. The Winwood Inn can accommodate up to 180 guests. Amenities include an outdoor pool, tennis court, game room, fitness center, restaurant and movie theatre. The Rock’n Mexicana restaurant in the Winwood Inn served 3,627 Margaritas and 1,150 Chicken Enchiladas last season from December 19th 2009 to April 19th 2010 (more)
