The classic European fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood is a universal story that strikes the chord with readers all over the world. The red-hooded little girl has to face the Big Bad Wolf who disguises himself as her sick grandmother. Everyone knows how the story ends.
ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
Intrigued by this age-old tale, Sir Dandy ventures on a modern reinterpretation of the story for his solo art exhibition, Imitation of Life, which is held at Art & Science, Grand Indonesia, from 2 February to 2 April 2018. Sir Dandy reimagines both antithetical characters—one representing purity, the other a symbol of predatory nature—through his own cheeky yet observant take. The artist connects the story with his own life experience and circle of friend, in effect imitating the story of his life through both the Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf, which he believes exist inside every one of us—two polar opposites constantly in struggle to convey themselves to the world. After all, everything can happen in this day and age: the girl does not always have to be the weak one, while the wolf might be the one preyed upon. This unique dichotomy is translated by Sir Dandy into a range of paintings and screenprint ilustrations, which depict both characters navigating modern-day scenarios, rendered in the artist’s notably vibrant and honest visual sensibilities. In a collaboration with Art & Science and ready-to-wear fashion brand Tenue de Attire, Sir Dandy also applies his artwork on an array of apparels, providing his audience with a new way to experience his visual work. Imitation of Life is the first art exhibition ever held at Art & Science —one of surely many more to come.
Visual art is Sir Dandy’s medium of choice to express his vibrant, wild, and tongue-in-cheek ideas in a variety of media. He has participated in a number of art exhibitions, including his first solo outing, Color of the Trap, in Jakarta in 2012. Imitation of Life is his second solo art exhibition.
SPECIAL THANKS It has been a while since my last solo exhibition a couple of years ago. I'm so happy now to share my visual journey through these two characters again, only this time it is more special because you can also have my artwork in ready-towear collections. This exhibition would never happen without the generous support from Mrs. Lily Sidharta and Mr. Hanin Sidharta. Thank you to Art & Science and IZIPIZI as well. Cheers! Sir Dandy
ABOUT THE ARTIST
“Once upon a time, there was a little girl called Little Red Riding Hood who lived in a village near the forest...”
Sir Dandy Harrington is the nom de guerre of Dandi Achmad Ramdhani a.k.a. Achong, a multi-hyphenate talent mainly known for his works as a visual artist and musician. Born in Bandung in 1974, he first rose to prominence as the frontman of Teenage Death Star before releasing his first solo album, Lesson #1, in 2011. His artistry, however, goes beyond music.
ARTWORK
BEHIND THE SCENES
“When starting a new work, I’d observe the story and read a lot about the scenes that I want to illustrate.”
“The interesting part of my creative process is that I spend 80 percent of the time to observe.”
