PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Elevating Effectiveness “Efficiency is doing things right; effectiveness is doing the right things.” – Peter Drucker While we all would like to think that we are both efficient and effective, the truth is we all could add a few more tools to the tool kit. Even with the economic improvement over the last few years, our businesses, organizations, and people can always improve. That is why our upcoming meeting in San Antonio, October 1-4, has been designed around the theme “Elevating Effectiveness.” Even if you don’t read past the next paragraph, put these dates on your calendar and plan to attend this year’s annual meeting! The FEMSA meeting planners have come together with an outstanding lineup of speakers, and based on your feedback, we have tweaked a few things. We still have the Fire Chiefs’ Roundtable, a fantastic way to hear what direction the fire service is headed directly from its leaders. We will get a Washington update from Bill Webb, and an economic update from Dr. Anirban Basu. The Fire Drill has always been a very popular feature, but your feedback in recent years suggested you wanted more depth. So, this year we’ll debut “Fire Lanes” with two longer sessions of two topics covered in each session. (Hint: if you want to see all four sessions, you will need two people to attend from your company.)

Official Publication of Fire and Emergency Manufacturers and Services Association, Inc.

Maura Nevel Thomas, author and founder of RegainYourTime.com, is our keynote speaker and will focus on how to be effective in this distraction-riddled world. Dr. David Griffin, a member of the Charleston (SC) Fire Department, and author of the book, “In Honor of the Charleston 9: A Study of Change Following Tragedy,” will provide insights on his department’s journey since the tragic fire that took nine brave firefighters’ lives. Tim Sendelbach, editor of FireRescue magazine, will speak on the importance of designing equipment that encourages safety and good decision making by firefighters. There is also time during breaks and other functions to network with the leaders of our industry. I would like to thank Bill Van Lent, Janet Wilmoth, and members of the Education Committee for pulling together another outstanding program. Remember, there is a limited number of rooms in our room block, and they are available on a first-come, firstserved basis. So plan to sign up now!

at $340 million each ($680 million total) for fiscal year 2015, representing level funding. We also encouraged funding levels of $44 million for the U.S. Fire Administration and full funding for our nation’s Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) teams at $50 million.

Another Great Hill Day! By Dave Gatton

FEMSA and FAMA members have done it again by making our 2014 Hill Day the largest to date. Over the span of an afternoon and morning, 35 individuals from 26 member companies fanned out across Capitol Hill and met with 95 congressional offices to promote the fire and emergency response services. Our FEMSA/FAMA teams met with 11 Senate Appropriations member offices, including the chairs of both the full committee and subcommittee on Homeland Security, as well as six senators who serve on the Homeland Security authorizing committee.

“IN THIS POLITICAL ENVIRONMENT WE CAN TAKE NOTHING FOR GRANTED.”

In almost every office we visited, members and staff expressed support for these programs, especially AFG and SAFER. And, in turn, our members thanked them for the levels of funding in the FY 2014 appropriations bill. It is, in this tight budgetary environment,

a victory to achieve level funding of $340 million for each of the AFG and SAFER programs, and we told them that the fire service, including its manufacturers, were appreciative of that support. Now, it is our job to make sure that this support reaches its fruition for the coming year. Trust me, in this political environment we can take nothing for granted. So, we encourage everyone to write their senators and congressional representatives to express support for the AFG and SAFER programs. •

“FEMSA AND FAMA MEMBERS SET A RECORD IN NUMBER OF OFFICES VISITED.”

The House side was equally impressive. We met with four House members of the Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee, including its chairman, along with members of the full appropriations and DHS authorizing committees as well. The bottom line: FEMSA and FAMA members set a record in number of offices visited. On behalf of your team here in Washington, D.C., we want to thank you for taking the time to do this critically important work. And it IS critical work. Our main message was to fund the Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) and Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) programs

CFSI’s 26th Annual National Fire and Emergency Services Dinner attracted 2000 dinner guests.

The 26th Annual Fire Dinner By Dave Gatton

As always, this year’s Hill Day was held in conjunction with the Congressional Fire Services Institute’s (CFSI) National Fire and Emergency Services Dinner. It amazes me

every year how important this event is. Thousands of people and 12 associations, including FEMSA and FAMA, come together to express their common desire to promote the fire service and to show Congress that we speak with one voice. In my 30-year plus career in Washington, D.C., I have seen no more effective coalition than this one. FEMSA and

James Long (W.S. Darley) and Bill Van Lent (Veridian) at CFSI dinner. 6

Summer 2014 • FEMSA.org

FAMA can be proud that we have become an integral part of this common bond. At the dinner, Jeh Johnson, our new secretary of Homeland Security, spoke reflectively about his day on 9/11 as a young lawyer working in Manhattan. His testimony was both personal and compelling, and reminded us all that 9/11 will be forever seared into the fabric of the American experience. But he was quick to remind us that heroism happens every day in the smaller, but no less important, expressions of sacrifice and service of our first responders. It is good to know that our DHS secretary is supportive of the fire service and understands its critical role as part of our national plan to keep the homeland safe. If you have never participated in Hill Day or the Fire Dinner, you really owe it to yourself to be a part of this effort. You won’t be disappointed. It will serve to reaffirm the great work that you do every day. •

STATE OF THE FIRE SERVICE SURVEY 11th Annual State of the Fire Service Survey by Melinda Freeman

The 2014 FEMSA/FAMA 11th ANNUAL STATE OF THE FIRE SERVICE SURVEY is online at both FEMSA and FAMA websites. Our thanks to PennWell who graciously provided a kiosk at FDIC so we could reach out to attendees during the exhibits and encourage more survey takers. FEMSA, with the support of FAMA, and a generous gift from joint member Task Force Tips, hired Nicole, a

trade show professional, to staff the kiosk – a first for FEMSA and FAMA. Nicole engaged participants and handed out complimentary rescue tools to participants who completed the online survey. We look forward to receiving even more quality responses through the summer. Please encourage your end users to take this survey. We look forward to the results which will be shared in San Antonio in October when we’ll also select the winner of the next $5,000 equipment award and iPad. •

elcome to the first installment of the 2014 Trade Show Report Card. The 2014 articles will continue to include questions gathered from the surveys and will list the answers from trade show management. The results are in for the first trade show of the season, Firehouse World. Thank you to those who participated. We appreciate your time.

Firehouse World San Diego, CA February 19–20, 2014

Q: There seems to be a continued concern about attendance. Last year it was on the first day. This year it was on the second day. Do you feel what you did last year to address the attendance question had any effect? What are your plans to improve next year’s attendance? A: Our goal every year is to grow attendance. Three years ago we began measuring exhibitor satisfaction with the event. We are very happy to see satisfaction steadily climbing. Attendance increased this year with the addition of the Firefighter Throwdown and with the Harley-Davidson giveaway at the end of the show, leaving many companies saying this was the best Firehouse World they’d been to in 10 years. But as an organization, we are never completely satisfied. We are always working to grow attendance. In 2015, the team has been challenged to meet a 25% growth target.

Q: We continue to see a booth space rate increase. With these increases, are we going to see value added? What is the show doing to keep expenses down? A: The multi-tiered pricing we traditionally offered amounted to a penalty or surcharge to many exhibitors. So we simplified pricing this year, resulting in a price decrease for many. From the cost perspective, we are proud of our achievements in reducing the number of exhibit days, thereby reducing exhibitor travel and entertainment expenses. We’ve changed general contractors to Shepard Exposition Services, which post-show results indicate was well received by exhibitors. Also, in 2015 we move up two weeks on the calendar, moving off of the President’s Day holiday. This will both reduce exhibitor move-in costs and increase the ability for area firefighters to attend Firehouse World. Q: What happened to the Hands-on Training classes? Are they going to come back? A: Yes, the Hands-on Training (HOT) program will be coming back. We understand the need for hands-on training and have been analyzing the effectiveness of HOT since 2011. There is a desire and need for it, and Cygnus is committed to making the offerings more complete. Q: What can we expect for next year? Is there anything you would like to tell us about? A: Our strategy for 2015 can be summarized in two distinct buckets: exhibit growth and attendee growth through improved content; and quantitative improvement in exhibitor ROI. Exhibit

TRADE SHOW REPORT CARD and attendee growth will be realized as a function of focused efforts to grow the EMS, Health & Wellness, Wildland and Water Rescue segments of the audience and show floor. We have some forwardlooking content around the changing landscape of fire-based EMS with the Affordable Care Act that has been very well received to date. The addition of this content, and our being the only national event to provide EMS content and continuing education in partnership with our EMS World brand, puts us in a strong position to realize growth here. We kicked off our Health & Wellness initiative with the Firehouse Firefighter 4 Throwdown this year but the culmination of that initiative will be a “show within the show” 3.5 with exercise and nutrition education designed to extend the life and health of our firefighters. Water 3 Rescue has been a successful initiative in Balti2.5 more at Firehouse Expo that we will adapt for the western fire service. Also, with the development of 2 our Content Steering Committee, we are confident that we will be able to provide the latest and most 1.5 unique in strategy, tactics and lessons learned for urban, rural and wildland firefighters alike. 1 We’ll address exhibitor ROI, in addition to the expense-cutting initiatives above, with a quantifiable, qualified pre-show lead guarantee for each exhibitor based on their spending with us. With an established cost per qualified lead at $100, we will guarantee all paid exhibiting companies qualified, pre-show leads from the pre-registered attendee list at the rate of $100 per qualified lead based on their total spend.

Q: What separates Firehouse World from FDIC, Fire-Rescue International and the other shows? A: Firehouse World is the most comprehensive fire, rescue and EMS event, serving today’s Western fire service leadership with education, products and technologies to prepare them for the urban, rural and wildland challenges they face every day. •

NFFF RECEIVES 4-STAR RATING FROM CHARITY NAVIGATOR FOR SECOND CONSECUTIVE YEAR ator, awarded their coveted four out of 4-Star rating to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation for the second consecutive year. Only 19 percent of the organizations rated by Charity Navigator have received at least two consecutive 4-Star evaluations. For the public and firefighters it’s important to know their generous donations to fire service charities are having an impact and making a difference. To ensure that happens, the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) has made sound fiscal management a priority and has long been committed to accountability and transparency. That’s why NFFF is pleased to announce that Charity Navigator, the nation’s premier charity evalu14

“The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation is conscientious about using our financial resources to honor the nation’s fallen firefighters. We do so by providing important services such as conferences, workshops and scholarships to the survivors,” said Ronald J. Siarnicki, executive director of the NFFF. “We are thrilled to receive this designation from Charity Navigators for the second year in a row.”

A 4-Star rating reassures potential donors that an organization adheres to good governance and other best practices. It shows that a charity consistently executes its mission in a fiscally responsible way. The news media in recent years has pointed out that an increasing number of firefighter charities are under scrutiny. Siarnicki explained, “This year NFFF was contacted by reporters after line-of-duty deaths in major cities and small towns with questions on how the public can make sure their donations in honor of the fallen go to reputable organizations.” One of those tips is to check out the organization through Charity Navigator. •

INTERSEC 2014 Intersec 2014 by Rod Carringer

Earlier this year, over a dozen FEMSA members participated in the annual Intersec exhibition in Dubai, U.A.E. Bringing together nearly 25,000 attendees, distributors, agents and governmental officials from across the Middle East, India, China, Russia and Eastern Europe, this unique conference showcased fire, emergency response, and security

equipment providers from around the world. FEMSA member companies were greeted with delightfully warm weather at this January event, outstanding nighttime entertainment, Camel Burger and three full days of incredible business opportunities. From the American Pavilion, to individual stands scattered throughout the World Trade Center, US representatives actively participated in a regional marketplace ripe with private sector and governmental growth and investment. With the English language as the platform from which most business conversations start, the ease of communication, travel, and the hospitality afforded to attendees at the numerous hotels in close proximity to the exhibition, Dubai was an ideal Gulf location for FEMSA members who made the trip.

While global business of this nature may be beyond the scope of some companies, the opportunities to sell into this regional market, as well as sourcing local products for distribution into the US, offer untold opportunities. These opportunities are not always without risk, though, as customers from countries around the region, with less than friendly ties to the US, seek to secure equipment. This was apparent in Dubai with very strict US trade rules and regulations in place.

All in all, the exhibition was well worth the long flights to access the Dubai and Gulf region, and business opportunities continue to expand. For more information on doing business in the Middle East, speak with any of the representatives of companies pictured here. •

Firehouse Heroism Program Honored by Publishing Industry For more than 30 years, Firehouse magazine has awarded firefighters for extraordinary acts of heroism, community service and bravery. Firehouse was honored for that program, receiving a FAME award in the “Best Awards/Recognition Program B2B” category.

Accepting the award in New York City: (l to r) Associate Publisher Jeff Barrington, Editor-in-Chief Harvey Eisner, Managing Editor Elizabeth Neroulas and Program Manager Paul Hashagen.

The Firehouse Heroism and Community Service Awards Program recognizes firefighters from across the country for acts of heroism that were performed both on and off duty. “The rescues take place in a variety of places and unusual situations,” said Harvey Eisner, editor-in-chief of Firehouse Magazine. “These can range from building fires, vehicle fires and motor vehicle wrecks, floods, highangle removals, boating accidents, ice rescues and many more unusual situations that firefighters are called to or come upon off duty.” The heroism award recipients will be named in June, and the September issue will honor the community service nominees. Prior to joining Firehouse Carly earned her undergraduate degree at Indiana University. Steve Elias left the fire industry in January to pursue entrepreneurial endeavors. The Firehouse team also welcomes Caitlin Bieda to the team as a sales manager, replacing Jeannine Chandler. Chandler moved from the fire-service to automotive and trucking markets within Cygnus Business Media in March. Caitlin has been with Cygnus for over a year and had previously worked on the Cygnus Law Enforcement and Security Events. Carly and Caitlin will be responsible for both Firehouse Expo, July 15-19, 2014 in Baltimore, MD and Firehouse World, January 25-29, 2015 in San Diego, CA. FIREHOUSE® Announces New 2014 Station Design Initiatives and Conference Firehouse teams up with former Fire Chief head, Janet Wilmoth, to launch a station design awards program and conference in 2014. Firehouse announced its plans to launch a station design awards program and design conference in 2014. Firehouse’s expansion in the station design segment comes on the heels of Firehouse Magazine’s successful Fire Station Design supplement, which was published in August, 2013. “Based on the popularity of our design supplement, and growing demand from department personnel and municipal officials for expert advice, best practices, and education, we see a real opportunity to better serve

this segment,” said Greg Toritto, Firehouse’s group publisher. “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to partner with Janet Wilmoth. Her experience and dedication to helping departments navigate the arduous process of building and renovating their public safety facilities is unparalleled. ” More than a decade ago Toritto and Wilmoth worked together to launch Station Style, a successful station design initiative that included an awards program and conference. Station Style was operated by Fire Chief Publications, which unexpectedly ceased operations late last year. “I’m very pleased that Firehouse is making this commitment to individuals tasked with building and renovating their stations,” said Janet Wilmoth. “Designing a new fire station or public safety facility is a monumental task and often a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for department leaders. Working with the Firehouse team, I’m confident we can bring quality resources and networking to people who really need our help.” Firehouse has released a tentative timeline for the Station Design Awards program, with a final entry deadline of August 15th. Winners will be announced in October, followed by the publication of a station design portfolio that will showcase award-winning and notable station designs. In addition to the Station Design Awards program, Firehouse will host a one-day Station Design Conference on July 16th at Firehouse Expo, taking place July 16-19, 2014 at the Baltimore Convention Center.

I grew up in Lodi, New Jersey. I moved to the Baltimore area in 1994 to attend Towson University where I spent five great years playing football and earning my B.S. in Sports Management. I then relocated to Philadelphia to work as a territory sales manager for a construction equipment rental company. After a few years in Philly, I was diagnosed with kidney cancer. With the support of my family, friends, and the doctors at Pennsylvania Hospital, I was able to successfully overcome the disease. While I recovered both mentally and physically from the multiple surgeries, I was inspired to take my career in a new direction. I began working at Bancroft School in Haddonfield, New Jersey as a one-to-one program associate. At this remarkable institution, I specialized in working individually with students who have developmental and cognitive disabilities. As rewarding as my time was at Bancroft, my desire to get back into sales led me to seek out this great opportunity with the PennWell Fire Group. My position with PennWell allowed my wonderful wife, Samantha, and I to move back to the North

Jersey area where we could be close to my family as we start our own. Our son, Kellen, was born March 06, 2014, and we could not be happier. I am excited to be assigned to the Northeast territory after living throughout the Northeast my entire life, and I look forward to furthering PennWell Fire Group’s current partnerships in the area as well as establishing new ones. -Anthony Maglionico
