ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF COUNTRY

Everywhere Windmill Theatre Company wanders, we walk softly, we speak respectfully, we hold integrity, we collaborate and create while honouring the truth of reconciliation and the true history of this country.

Windmill Theatre Company knows that the land on which we create our work is sacred. We know there were many tribal family clans here before us and we now sit beside them.

We acknowledge the tribal family clans who are known today as the Kaurna Meyunna, the first peoples of this place.

We respect all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from across this sacred land which is known today as Australia.

Windmill Theatre Company holds a vessel of cultural understanding. This vessel symbolises a renewed journey towards the spirit of humanity and the coming together of all generations of the human family. We walk together with the oldest living cultures to guide these ways of understanding.

2023 PROGRAM 01

A Message from Rose Myers.

This year, Windmill turns 21. It’s a big birthday, one of life’s major milestones. It’s a time when many of us step out on our own and begin to forge our own paths. That journey, like a good show, will take many twists and turns and that is part of the excitement. After 14 years as Artistic Director of Windmill Theatre Company, I’m making my own change of direction and moving on to an exciting new role at Windmill Pictures – the arm of our company dedicated to film and television production. As always, I am proud to be associated with this brilliant company and I can’t wait to welcome my successor and revel in the new ideas and energy they will bring.

I hope you enjoy the excellent shows our artists conjure up for you throughout 2023. They are playing in theatres and on screens across Australia and the world. All this work is made with passionate rigour, imagination of the highest bar and a huge dose of joy. We think these stories are an important offer in today’s complicated world and we can’t wait to share them with you.

When Hans and Gret’s mum arrives home from a radical health retreat with the years literally shaved off her, their lives are thrown into chaos.

As parents become teenagers again and kids all over their community start disappearing, the pair are led down a forest path that will see them leave everything they know behind.

Part teenage fever-dream, part dystopian nightmare, Hans and Gret warps reality to epically reinvent a classic fairytale and turn it into a tripped-out psychological thriller pulsing with danger, betrayal, and dread.

Hans and Gret is an anarchic, knife-edge world premiere that uses bone conduction audio technology to plunge audiences into a dangerous world of seduction, mind control and candy.

Don’t eat the gingerbread. A Windmill Theatre Company and Sandpit production presented in association with Adelaide Festival.

Do you have a cure for the hiccups?

It’s a perfect, balmy night in the outback. A sleep-deprived camper, a cheeky quokka and an emu with a penchant for creating wild inventions, awake to discover that a koala has come down with a stubborn and ear shatteringly loud case of the hiccups.

The three embark on a psychedelic night-time journey that sees them frantically eat, sing, and invent their way towards the great hiccup cure before sunrise.

Hiccup is an explosively funny, rocking musical extravaganza about working together, finding friendship and how to, once and for all, get rid of the hiccups.

Education Program.

At Windmill, we take our young audience seriously and are endlessly inspired by their creativity and modern sophistication. We augment the live theatre experience with high quality educational resources to help take our stories further and ignite a lifelong passion for the arts.

In addition to providing dedicated schools’ performances and pricing for every South Australian season of our work, we offer students and educators a range of opportunities to engage with us and our artists throughout the year.

EDUCATION RESOURCES

Windmill’s educational resources help our stories step off the stage and directly into the classroom. Developed by leading educators in consultation with our artistic and creative teams, we provide study guides for every show that we present. These guides are linked to the Australian Curriculum and are continuously updated to ensure that students and teachers can get the most out of their time in the theatre.

All resources are provided free of charge on our website. They include exclusive behind the scenes content, interviews with our creatives, a list of hiccup cures, an insight into the foundations of theatre making, and even an interview with a tiny knitted bear.

Study guides are available by visiting windmill.org.au/education.

Generously supported by:

Each year, we complete a major education project that untangles an idea at the centre of our annual world premiere work. Our most recent project is Camp Windmill, an interactive digital campsite that sees some of Australia’s leading creatives talk about camp aesthetics and the art of the pose.

08 2023 PROGRAM

FREE SEATS PROGRAM

Each year, Windmill’s Free Seats Program offers 15% of tickets across our selfpresented seasons free of charge to disadvantaged schools in South Australia.

Schools ranked 1 to 4 in accordance with the Department for Education’s Index of Disadvantage are encouraged to apply, with Windmill covering the cost of tickets for up to two classes to attend a performance of one of our works.

If you would like more information, or to register your interest for the Free Seats Program, please contact education@windmill.org.au.

Windmill's Free Seats Program is made possible with the support of the Lang Foundation and the South Australian Department for Education.

TEACHER STUDENT RATIO

When booking a school group to a Windmill performance, accompanying teachers will be admitted free of charge according to the following duty of care ratios:

Kindergarten and Preschool – 1:04 Reception to Year 2 – 1:06

Year 3 to Year 7 – 1:10 Year 8 to Year 12 – 1:15

Additional teachers, guardians or supervising adults will need to purchase tickets at the time of booking. For students with access needs, please contact Windmill to confirm the appropriate ratio.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS

Throughout the year, we offer teachers the opportunity to engage with our awesome creatives to gain an in-depth understanding of the theatre making practices at the centre of our work. We’ve done workshops on everything from playwriting to puppetry to the art of adaptation.
