We can be giants, huge and domineering or tiny specks, invisible and inconsequential, all depending on our point of focus...
message from ROSE I love theatre because it allows us to put human experiences under the microscope or to look out into the bigger world or even the cosmos to locate ourselves. There’s a large serve of zoom from Windmill Theatre in 2015. To begin with, we are off to New York with Pinocchio and can’t wait to show the Big Apple a small bite of music theatre South Australian style! We are also moving into a brand new company home and will be working those zoom lenses overtime as we produce and premiere our first-ever feature film, Girl Asleep at the Adelaide Film Festival. Plus, there is a lot more great theatre in our 2015 program. It’s a passionately curated offering and features a series of performances and projects created by teams of kooky, inventive, occasionally irreverent, and always awesomely talented artists, and all of our shows are specially made for children, young people and their friends and families. We hope you embrace some of this eclectic collection of arty wonderment guaranteed to give your 2015 a charge. 03

2015 ADELAIDE FESTIVAL AGES: 7+ 28 FEBRUARY – 8 MARCH ODEON THEATRE Darkness rules as acclaimed Italian director Chiara Guidi and her Australian creative team explore the shadier side of the famous story of Jack, the mysterious stranger with magical beans, the ogre that lived high in the sky and the goose that laid the golden egg. Jack’s astonishing trip up the beanstalk is worth the price of admission alone in this wild musical production that will have children engrossed by its magical storytelling, stagecraft and laugh-out-loud moments. A new work by Chiara Guidi of Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio, in co-production with Jeff Stein, Erth Visual and Physical and Insite Arts. Commissioned by Campbelltown Arts Centre and Adelaide Festival. A special Windmill Theatre season addition.

AGES: 9+ 20 – 31 MAY HER MAJESTY’S THEATRE WORLD PREMIERE SEASON By Kate Mulvany based on the book by Kit Williams with music by Pip Branson and Mikelangelo In a wondrous world of riddles and hidden treasure, bumbling Jack Hare is on a race against time to deliver a message of love from the Moon to the Sun. Far, far away in a world just like ours, a mother cheers her son Joe with the tale of Jack Hare’s adventure. But when Jack’s mission goes topsy-turvy, Joe and his mum must come to the rescue, and the line between myth and reality becomes blurred forever. Masquerade is a new Australian play by award-winning playwright Kate Mulvany based on the iconic children’s book by Kit Williams, which sold over two million copies worldwide in the late 1970s and sparked a national British treasure hunt with its concealed clues to the location of a jeweled golden hare. Featuring rich and fantastical design, knockabout humour, brilliant gypsy-influenced music and a cast of exotic characters, wise-cracking animals and a few mere mortals, this is a magical adventure that is, at its heart, about the love between a parent and a child. Presented by State Theatre Company of South Australia and Griffin Theatre Company in association with Adelaide Festival Centre and Windmill Theatre.

AGES: 3 – 6 7 – 19 JULY SPACE THEATRE Imagine a world without teddy bears. Now quickly stop imagining because it’s far too upsetting. Thankfully, teddies are here to stay and this captivating musical performance pays loving tribute to these woolly wonders, who – with their pulled ears, poked eyes and unfashionable waistcoats – somehow become our closest childhood friends. With songs and laughter and lots of joining in, Bear With Me is a show about looking after, and being looked after – a warm and fuzzy romp through the joy and turmoil of a teddy’s everyday life. And the best thing is you have to bring your teddy or favourite stuffed toy along. After all, they’re the real stars of the show. Windmill Theatre and Adelaide Festival Centre present a Metro Arts production.

the book of loco AGES: 14+ 14 – 22 AUGUST SPACE THEATRE With this spellbinding, semi-autobiographical one-hander, master storyteller Alirio Zavarce proves that when it comes to insanity, there’s safety and comfort in numbers. Alirio plays Loco, his own out-of-control alter ego, and in side-splitting, heartbreaking detail, chronicles his real life descent into genuine madness. From his troubled migrant past, to the breakdown of a relationship, to the agonising death of a parent, this is deeply immersive theatre at its beautiful, funny and unsettling best – a welcome change to lose yourself in somebody else’s madness. Winner of 2013 Adelaide Fringe Festival Award for Best Theatre Production. Presented by Windmill Theatre and Adelaide Festival Centre. Original season made possible through producing support from Janine Peacock, Loose Canon Art Services.

Now she must step into the dark unknown to get it back. Pinocchio CREATED AND DIRECTED BY ROSEMARY MYERS WITH WRITER JULIANNE O’BRIEN
Carlo Collodi's classic tale re-imagined as a witty, gothic, rocking, family music theatre spectacular. Since its premiere in Adelaide in 2012, our co-production with State Theatre Company of South Australia of Pinocchio has played to over 30,000 young people around Australia. It has collected a swag of awards, including two Helpmann Awards for Best New Australian Work and Best Presentation for Children and a Ruby Award for Best New Work. Now our intrepid wooden boy packs his bags for the bright lights of New York City, as part of The New Victory Theater season.

Big Bad Wolf WRITTEN BY MATTHEW WHITTET, DIRECTED BY ROSEMARY MYERS
A hilarious, table-turning tale about the most misunderstood character in fairytale history. Following its successful Adelaide premiere in 2013 and subsequent seasons at Melbourne Theatre Company and Brisbane’s Out of the Box Festival, this gentle tale about outcast Wolfy and the high achieving Heidi Hood tours Western Australia followed by an extensive North American tour in 2015–2016.

Grug DIRECTED BY SAM HAREN
Based on the much-loved picture books by Ted Prior Grug and his friendly cohort of playful adventurers are set to delight audiences once again. Over 50,000 young people and their families from all corners of the globe have bopped along to the ‘Grug Dance’ since its humble Adelaide premiere in 2010. Now, the award-winning original production Grug and new work Grug and the Rainbow play to audiences in Melbourne before setting sail to the Asian continent to deliver the same simple storytelling, elegant design and exquisite puppetry Australian audiences have come to love and treasure.

The Ballad Of Pondlife Mcgurk WRITTEN BY ROB EVANS, DIRECTED BY GILL ROBERTSON
This is simply told, powerful theatre about just how difficult it can be to stay true to your friends. Renowned Scottish theatre company Catherine Wheels developed this work in 2012 and it has since been performed all over the world, from Washington DC to New York’s Broadway, and Auckland to Edinburgh. Windmill’s production, featuring South Australian actor Renato Musolino, premiered in Adelaide last year to critical acclaim and takes to the road in an extensive South Australian regional schools tour in 2015.

Creative Developments Creation, Creation
Where did life begin? This age-old question is at the heart of a new collaborative project lead by independent artist Fleur Elise Noble and Windmill’s Rosemary Myers, together with leading digital artists Sandpit. Starting with a big bang and growing from the blackness of a projector, we will collaborate with members of the Renmark Community to stage a full re-enactment of the beginning of time.
2016 Family Musical Following the outstanding success of our partnership with State Theatre Company of South Australia on the production of Pinocchio, we kick off 2015 with the creative development of our new large-scale musical for family audiences. 22

Our Arts Education Program Theatre experiences supported by a rich, systematic arts education provide a framework that allows young people to think creatively and flexibly, to take imaginative leaps, to develop ideas in response to what they see and hear on stage and to consider the world in new and lateral ways. We aim to make theatre that genuinely engages and challenges a young audience and nurtures creativity vital for navigating the contemporary world.
Beyond The Stage We provide our audiences with an holistic arts experience offering free post performance workshop activities that give families an opportunity to explore the themes and ideas of the performance as they make and shape their own creative response. To support effective learning design in the arts our schools program offers rigorous pre and post-performance educational resources such as teacher notes, backstage workshops, specific curriculum links and professional learning opportunities. For more information on any aspect of our Education Program, please visit windmill.org.au/educate or contact Arts Education Manager Julie Orchard on (08) 8415 5358.
Theatre for Everyone As a commitment to ensuring all students have access to our work we have an equity policy that offers 15% of tickets free to DECD disadvantaged schools and community groups across the state. To apply please contact Windmill’s Arts Education Manager.
A Shared Commitment Our Arts Education Manager, Julie Orchard is seconded from the Department for Education and Child Development directly through the Teaching and Learning Portfolio as part of the Outreach Education unit. The appointment of a seconded teacher endorses the shared commitment of DECD and Windmill in developing partnerships between the education sector and arts industry.
