Go back to the truck and get all tools, chemicals, ladders, etc. that will be needed to successfully complete the job.

During initial job site survey take note of the weather conditions. Rain, snow, wind direction and speed, what side the sun is on, etc.

In rainy/wet conditions it is important to be extra careful with the ladders. Spike the feet of the ladder when on wet ground. Have another tech foot the ladder whenever on a hard slippery surface.

If the wind is blowing hard in one direction, make sure you clean the windows in that direction to avoid water being blown onto a window that was already cleaned. Also in high winds it is important to be careful carrying the ladders. Do not leave ladders unattended in high winds.

Take note of what side the sun is on. You will need more water on the scrubber in order to clean those windows. This is also when a water bottle is handy to re-‐wet the scrubber.

Open the window and remove the storm window panes and screen by pushing the clips in on the bottom corners and sliding the window down and pulling it out from the track. Do this for both storms and the screen.

Place the storms where they will not get damaged or damage something else.

Use either a window genie or a drop cloth on the floor to clean the storm windows.

Scrub one side of the storm with the scrubber.

Scrape the storm with a razor blade to remove all stuck on dirt.

After the outside of the true divide window, the storm windows, and the screen are all clean then the storm windows can be put back into the window.

When putting the windows back in note the sizes of each pane. The pane that goes back first will be slightly taller and narrower in width. This pane should be at the top of the window. Then put the second pane back in. This pane will sit at the bottom of the window. Finally, put the screen back in. The screen also sits at the bottom of the window.

From the inside of the window, unclip the interior storms and pull it out of the window. Sometimes a small flat head screw driver is needed to “crack” the window pane from its seal. This is usually needed if the window has never been taken apart before.

After the window panes are taken out, clean each side of each pane and place off to the side. Follow the procedures from Storm Window Cleaning to clean these.

Clean the interior panes of the window. Follow the procedures from Double Hung or Casement Cleaning.

Put the window panes back in and slide the clips back so that it’s locked into place.

Let the screen dry before bringing them inside to be put back.

Before scraping any glass surface, make sure that the razor blade does not have any rust on it. It can potentially scratch the window.

Check to see if the window is tempered or heat treated. Note: that by code all doors, kitchen windows, bathroom windows, and any glass near the floor is supposed to be tempered. If the window is heat treated or tempered there is a chance of fabricating debris, which will scratch the window when running the razor blade of it.

Check for construction debris. This type of debris (concrete, stucco, etc.) can also scratch glass when running the razor blade over it. If construction debris is present inform the supervisor/customer.

Wet the window with the scrubber.

Scrape the window from the inside out making sure to lift the razor blade after each stroke. Be careful not to tear any seals around the window. Be careful when scraping the corners of the glass.

Steps 4 and 5 may need to be repeated if there is still dirt, paint, etc. on the window. Repeat as necessary.

Steel and Bronze Wool is used to remove certain stains including oxidation (screen burn, “gray stuff”)

Make sure to use a new wool pad. Any rust on the wool may scratch the window.

Scrub the window with the steel wool pad making sure to get the entire window pane, including the corners and bottom. Note: oxidation tends to build up more heavily at the bottom of the window panes. Also scrubbing with a circular motion helps ensure that the entire area is scrubbed.

Repeat steps 5 and 6 as necessary to make sure the window is clean.

When inspecting the window, determine if overspray (construction debris) is present. This can occur during the construction process and usually consists of bits of concrete mortar or stucco that gets stuck to the glass.

If overspray is present use a razor blade to scrape the window.

Inspect the light fixture. Determine what ladder will be needed. Determine what type of fixture it is (glass box or crystals).

If the fixture is a chandelier hung from a ceiling, an “A” frame ladder will be needed. If the fixture is a sconce (wall-‐mounted) then either ladder type (“A” frame or extension) can usually be used.

Open the door that allows access to the inside of the box.

Remove all light bulbs.

To clean the inside of the fixture one of two methods will be used: 1. Scrub & squeegee or 2. Damp towel & Dry towel

If the space is large enough inside and the glass panes are large enough then the scrub and squeegee method is preferred. Scrub each section to remove dirt & dust then squeegee and detail. Work from the top down. If the space is small inside the fixture use a damp rag to clean the glass and a dry rag to wipe dry.

Then scrub & squeegee the outside of the glass panes.

Dust off the rest of the fixture.

Replace the light bulbs.

Turn the fixture on to see any streaks or missed spots. Fix those areas.

Remove all light bulbs.

Clean each piece of crystal with a wet rag and dry it with a dry rag.
Wipe all metal parts on the fixture the same way.

Replace the light bulbs.

Turn the fixture back on to check for streaks dirt that may have been missed. Fix those areas.

Remove all light bulbs.

Dust any light bulbs that will not be replaced by new ones. Dust them lightly with a dry rag.
Replace the light bulbs.
