New Date 2020 For FENSTERBAU FRONTALE
And HOLZ-HANDWERK The following press release has been reproduced from the FENSTERBAU FRONTALE website: Commenting on the announcement from the Home Office regarding the UK’s new points-based immigration system, Chief Executive of the Federation of Master Builders (FMB), Brian Berry, said: “If we are to have an infrastructure revolution and build a million new homes over the next five years, we will need to have an immigration system that allows for key construction workers of all skill levels to come to the UK. The announcement that there will no longer be a route for “low skill” workers after next year will hamper the construction industry’s capacity to deliver on key projects.” He added: “We will need general labourers as much as architects or surveyors. They are a core part of the construction industry and it’s simply unrealistic to assume the domestic workforce will fill this gap in the next nine months.” www.fmb.org.uk 4 WINDOW NEWS MARCH 2020
In view of the increasing spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) and taking into account the principles for risk assessment of major events adopted by the crisis management group of the German government and the current recommendation of the Bavarian State Government for international exhibitions, NürnbergMesse has decided to postpone FENSTERBAU FRONTALE and HOLZ-HANDWERK 2020 to Tuesday, 16 June until Friday, 19 June 2020. In 2022 FENSTERBAU FRONTALE and HOLZ-HANDWERK will take place in March again. The protection of the health and safety of exhibitors, visitors and employees is a top priority for NürnbergMesse. In awareness of this responsibility and after careful consideration and evaluation of the current situation, the Management Board of NürnbergMesse has decided on this
necessary protective measure. Petra Wolf, Member of the Management Board of NürnbergMesse: “We expressly thank all customers, partners and media representatives for the understanding they have shown regarding our decision to postpone FENSTERBAU FRONTALE and HOLZ-HANDWERK 2020. We are pleased about the high level of commitment in the industry – after intensive deliberations and numerous positive discussions with national and international customers, we have chosen the new date in June”. Elke Harreiß, Director FENSTERBAU FRONTALE, adds: “Postponing FENSTERBAU FRONTALE was necessary for this important industry meeting place to be held in 2020 – although with special challenges. After all, maintaining and expanding business relations remain more than important in turbulent times like these. What is decisive now is that the industry stands together and tries to make the best out of this situation!“ www.frontale.de/en

January Sees Contract Awards
Increase By 18.5 Percent contract awards this month with combined value of £3 billion. The largest contract award was the £2 billion Dogger Bank Creyke Beck 1.4GW Offshore Wind Farm. The second largest contract award was in London and was the £1 billion Silvertown Tunnel project for Transport for London to provide a new car crossing between Thamesmead and Beckton. Regional analysis indicates that London maintained its leading position, accounting for 32.5% of all construction contract awards. With attributable share of 26.6%, Yorkshire & Humber was the second largest region in January. With the two leading regions accounting for 59.1% of all awards this month, the remaining regions all attracted significantly smaller individual share (all under 10%) with Scotland and the East of England vying for third place with respective share of 6.5% and 6.4% of construction contract awards.
The value of all construction contracts awarded in January 2020 was £5.5 billion based on a threemonth rolling average. This is an increase of 18.5% on December 2019 and is also 2.1% ahead of January 2019. In the three-month period ending January 2020, total construction contract awards were valued at £15.6 billion which is 7.1% higher than the previous quarter and is also 5.1% higher than the comparable quarter ending January 2019. In January the number of construction contract awards
was 893 which is an increase of 95.4% on December 2019. The latest edition of the Economic & Construction Market Review from industry analysts Barbour ABI, highlights levels of construction contract values awarded across Great Britain. The largest sector this month was infrastructure with attributable share of 42.7% of awards with the residential sector in second place attracting share of 25.5%. The infrastructure sector accounted for the two largest
Commenting on the figures, Tom Hall, Chief Economist at Barbour ABI and AMA Research said, “January’s strong contracts awards data suggests construction industry activity may be starting to respond after a clear general election result and the UK’s exit from the EU finally occurring, even if it is largely symbolic at this early stage. Whether the fog of uncertainty descends again as the upcoming UK-EU talks commence remains to be seen. Positive signs, such as the approval of HS2, indicate growth for the sector but at the moment it is too soon to tell whether January’s increase will convert into a sustained boom for the industry.” Download the full report here: http://ubm.io/2FRLrwm WINDOW NEWS MARCH 2020 5

Key Index Reveals Consumer
Confidence At Highest Level In Over A Decade
uncertainty of 2019, it seems consumers are finally regaining their confidence and making the most of this newfound political clarity. “It’s certainly the case in the home improvement sector, with our nationwide network of installers consistently writing millions of pounds of finance every month. It’s been a busy start to 2020 and we expect that trend to continue as we head into the lucrative spring season and the rest of the year.
Austin Barcley, managing director of industry finance principal Improveasy
In welcome news for the UK economy and retail sector, a recent survey has revealed that consumer confidence in Britain has risen to its highest level in over a decade. The IHS Markit household finance index, which charts the perceptions of financial wellbeing among UK households, rose in February to its highest point since records began 11 years ago. February’s index score climbed to 47.6, compared to 44.6 in January, showcasing a growing positivity among UK consumers about their money and financial affairs. Whilst the index still falls short of the magic 50.0 – a score that indicates improving conditions that has not been surpassed since the financial crisis, it does point towards an increase in consumer spending. With this positivity, Britons are 6 WINDOW NEWS MARCH 2020
already putting their hands back in their pockets. According to the Office for National Statistics, shoppers returned to the high streets in January to help boost retail sales by 0.9%. It’s the strongest rise since March 2019, and provided welcome relief following December’s sharp decline of 0.5%. Barclaycard are reporting similar good news across plastic with consumer spending across their platforms rising by 3.9% in January alone. Austin Barcley, Managing Director of industry finance principal Improveasy, believes this rise in consumer confidence and increase in retail spending will ultimately filter down from the high street and into the home improvement sector. Austin comments: “These findings will undoubtedly be welcome news for retail-focused companies. After the challenges and
“As shoppers return and homeowners look to improve, it’s vitally important that installers can offer the flexible payment options they now demand. Not only is more business being won and fulfilled through point-of-sale finance, but it’s proven to help installers land bigger and better sales.” Installers can offer Improveasy’s finance packages, including 0% APR and ‘Buy Now Pay Later’ at the point of sale, with easy online applications and instant credit decisions. By using their service, companies avoid the lengthy process of becoming FCA approved. Fire-Rating First For
Morley Glass & Glazing Morley Glass & Glazing is said to have become the first company in the UK to achieve a fire-rating accreditation for its insulated glass units with integral blinds inside. The fire-rated Uni-Blinds sealed units with ScreenLine integral blinds inside now comply with the performance criteria set out in the EU 305/2011 Construction Products Regulation, and have been independently verified by TUV UK, a UKAS accredited third party testing house. Ian Short, managing director of Morley Glass & Glazing said: “There are more than 300 fire-related deaths and more than 200,000 fire alarms raised in the UK every year. With recent high-profile incidents such as Grenfell Tower, it’s more important than ever that the correct building materials are specified. Our sealed units with integral blinds inside are manufactured in the UK using fire safety glass from Pyroguard and can deliver 30 to 120 minutes integrity and insulation fire-resistance.”
This latest innovation from Morley Glass & Glazing gives architects and specifiers design flexibility and peace of mind that glass partitions, facades, doors and windows that require fire protection, can now feature integral or “between glass” blinds, without compromising safety or aesthetics. Used widely in schools, hospitals, hotels, offices and other commercial buildings, as well as multi-let residential premises, the fire-rated integral blinds can be manufactured in sealed units up to 2m2 in size. The integral blinds are available in a choice of manual or motorised control options, and are popular due to the fact that the blinds, which are housed between the panes of glass, are protected from damage, remain clean and hygienic, are low maintenance, provide privacy and shading, and are available in a wide range of colours. Roof window and rooflight maker VELUX has agreed a new partnership with UK’s Housing Design Awards 2020 competition. Founded by the UK Government, the Housing Design Awards were launched in 1948 in the same sitting of Parliament as the National Health Service, to reward better municipal post-war rebuilding. The Awards were extended to include private homes in 1960 by the then Prime Minister, Harold Macmillan. Neil Freshwater from VELUX said: “VELUX was founded on a similar principle to these awards – to create healthier indoor climates to improve the health of occupants – and so it is a great privilege to join with the Awards in partnership. “Throughout our 75-year history, our passion has been bringing healthy indoor environments using daylight and fresh air, and at the heart of this are homes which are well designed with the end-user in mind. These awards promote all that is good about housing design.” The Awards are uniquely promoted by all five major professional institutions – RICS, RIBA, RTPI, Landscape Institute and Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists. Practice
The Window Company (Contracts), is one of the first businesses to sign up to the brand new ‘Good Business Charter’, which has been launched to encourage better business practice in the UK.
Backed by both the CBI and the TUC, the new Charter is the brainchild of Richer Sounds boss and ethical entrepreneur Julian Richer and will accredit only those companies that can prove they treat their staff, customers and suppliers well. For The Window Company (Contracts), it is the perfect fit. Chairman David Thornton explained: “We have built a successful business on the very principles which underpin this new charter – from paying a real living wage to our staff, to paying our suppliers promptly. “Businesses who sign up have to satisfy 10 key criteria on things like their commitment to employee representation and well being, ethical sourcing and paying fair tax, and we have done that with ease. Alongside The Window Company (Contracts) and Richer Sounds, founding members of the Good Business Charter include Brompton Bicycles, London City Airport and Deloitte. Sheerline Passes PAS24:2016 Sheerline Classic, the new residential aluminium window system from Garnalex has passed the PAS24:2016 security test with flying colours, defeating two test rigs on the way!
PAS24:2016 is designed to test the strength of windows and doors and their resistance to opportunistic break-in attempts. Testing requires each loading and locking point of a window to withstand a perpendicular applied load of 3kN (a kN or kilonewton is the equivalent of 300kg) and a parallel to plane load of 1kN. A maximum sized double side hung Sheerline window successfully passed both mechanical and manipulation tests with no issues at all. Having passed the tests successfully, Garnalex asked BSI’s technicians to carry out destructive testing to see just how strong the window system was. The results were described as ‘incredible’. Sheerline’s hinge side withstood the full loading capability of BSI’s hydraulic mechanical test rig of just over 10kN (over a metric tonne), holding the load for a minute without failure! The lock side of the window also achieved extraordinary results, withstanding 5kN of force before the lock failed. This was all the more impressive as the window had already been subjected to full mechanical and manipulation tests. In previous testing carried out at Archibald Kenrick & Sons test facility, Steve Williams, Kenrick’s Sales and Marketing Director was equally as impressed. “Having witnessed the new Sheer-
line window easily passing the required 3 kN standard, Garnalex asked us to test their new window to destruction to see what it could take. However we had to stop the test at 10 kN as we were concerned we would damage our test rig! Really impressive performance, and testimony to what the correct system and hardware combinations can achieve.” Phil Parry, Sheerline Testing and Standards Director, adds: “These results prove Sheerline’s Classic aluminium windows will set the new benchmark for strength and security for mainstream residential windows. Sheerline exceeded the required loads for PAS24:2016 by more than three times, to the amazement of the technical staff carrying out the testing. “Both window hinge and lock sides withstood loads in excess of the much more onerous PAS24:2016 door test where the perpendicular loads are 4.5kN, and even went beyond that required in EN1627-30. sheerline.com

£12M Facility Provides Window Of Opportunity
For Manufacturer
Secure Trust Bank Commercial Finance has supported UK Window Group with a £12m asset-based lending facility.
UK Window Group is a one-stop product, service and support solution provider for window and door trade, retail and new-build installers. The company has manufacturing capacity for more than 10,000 frames, 15,000 glass units and 500 composite doors each week and also offers support services, such as lead generation and technical installation advice, to a variety of customers across the UK. The group, which currently employs more than 1,100 staff, consists of five different businesses across six sites. This includes Duraflex, the extrusion arm of the business, Evolution, a high-end timber replacement window manufacturer, Techniglass a manufacturer of integrated glass
units, UKWG Composite Doors and Sevenday a national trade counter business with an expanding number of outlets across the country. UK Window Group is currently undergoing a turnaround following a management buyout from Masco Corporation in September 2019. The facility provided by Secure Trust Bank will further assist the turnaround, allowing the business to invest working capital into its future growth. The company is rolling out plans to expand its product range and also the growth of its network of Sevenday trade counters. Secure Trust Bank Commercial Finance offers a full suite of asset-based lending solutions, ranging in size from £1m to £50m, to businesses across the country. George Shannon, CFO at UK Window Group, said: “Secure
Trust Bank could see that we were on track with our turnaround plan and coming out of a period of heavy losses. They proved to be responsive and pragmatic, moving quickly from initial proposals through to completion over a number of weeks – as opposed to months – despite the complexities of our business and its legacy systems and processes. “The team at Secure Trust Bank has provided us with a flexible ABL facility to fund the turnaround, as well as future growth, and we look forward to putting this new funding to good use.” David Parsons, Regional Managing Director at Secure Trust Bank Commercial Finance, said: “Businesses have faced unprecedented challenges over the last few years due to the uncertainty and volatility of the UK market. However, we are now seeing companies make decisions with confidence and target growth in 2020. With that said, we are happy to support UK Window Group with this turnaround and are confident that this flexible line of funding will enable the company to realise its growth ambitions this year and beyond.” WINDOW NEWS MARCH 2020 11
TRADE NEWS from ODL Europe, which was also being used for the first time, adding to the significance of the test. The first part of the test consisted of pressure being applied to the corners and weak points at the front of the door by hydraulic rams. At the same time an opposing pulling force was applied from the back, the intention was to try and twist or warp the door to create a gap. With the hinge located lower down the doorframe this was a particularly crucial part of the testing, but the new 44mm reinforced door slab withstood the test.
PAS 24 OnArched Doors From Force 8
Force 8 has now achieved a PAS 24 on its arched door system, which includes its unique ‘onepiece bend’ frame and reinforced door slab. Force 8 says this now gives the company a full house in regards to unrivalled security, including its new stable door. And that the significance of this cannot be emphasized enough, as PAS 24 is required in all new build properties and opens up future specification routes to market for Force 8 and its customers. This was a particular technical challenge for Force 8 as the arched door systems need to have the upper hinge system at a lower point on the frame away from the beginning of the curve, which requires extra strength within the top half of the door. The arched door was also fitted with a new Zeel glazing cassette 12 WINDOW NEWS MARCH 2020
The next part of the test consisted of repeated blows from a steel ram to the same points on the door, pre-weakened by the pressure testing. The final part was the physical attack carried out by one of the test team. All the usual burglary tools were used from crowbars to chisels. Although looking a bit battered and bruised after the test, the arched door still held its structural integrity, and passed with flying colours. “This is a significant milestone for the company as we now have a PAS 24 for all our door ranges”, comments Dennis Sumner, managing director of Force 8. “Having pioneered the perfect arched frame, the perfect arched composite door was a natural progression and the PAS 24 is the final piece in the jigsaw. Along with the recent pass for our new Stable Door achieved late last year, means that any of our door systems can be specified on new build properties or projects”. Quanex Take Centre Stage At The NYSE
16 January 2020 was a day to remember for Liniar and Avantek Machinery’s Group Managing Director Martin Thurley. That particular Thursday marked the occasion Martin visited the New York Stock Exchange to take part in the ceremonial ringing of the bell to signal the start of trading. The reason for the momentous occasion was that January 2020 marked parent company Quanex’s 55th year being listed on the prestigious New York Stock Exchange (NYSE: NX).
Martin joined the Executive Management Team of Quanex Building Products to ring the bell as one, cohesive team. The day was also special for George Wilson, recently announced as succeeding Bill Griffiths as Quanex President and CEO.
KOMMERLING has launched a new Corporate and Social responsibility Programme across the whole profine Group and into the UK market under the headline of ‘Your Window to a Better World.’ Your Window to a Better World is the largest marketing and CSR programme that KÖMMERLING has ever embarked on and will underpin everything that the company will do in 2020 and beyond. It’s also a commitment to the environment and also to people across all international markets.
“It was a real privilege to represent the fantastic teams we have here at Liniar and Avantek – overall, a very special day, both personally and professionally!”
This new programme has already realised savings of over 1,000 annualised tonnes of CO2 emissions at both extrusion plants in Germany. Other examples of a commitment to the environment include the move to climate-neutral company cars in Germany, through offsetting an estimated 795 tons of CO₂ per year and so this compensation means that the vehicle fleet is 100% CO₂-neutral.

AluK
Joins Specifi Architecture Roadshows
Double R Glass & Roofing Systems Ltd is celebrating 20 years in business in 2020. Hot on the heels of an announcement from the company that year on year sales are up, the IGU manufacturer and conservatory roof fabricator is planning to celebrate its anniversary with further investment. Ian Sims, Managing Director of Double R comments: “We are extremely proud of Double R and all that it has achieved in the last 20 years. Of course, in that time we have seen economic and political highs and lows and closer to home the glass sector has been particularly turbulent of late with company closures still hitting the headlines. We have always taken the approach to keep our heads down and focus on ourselves and our customers to ensure we continue to supply the very best products with the very best service. It may sound cliché, but it’s what customers really want, along with open and honest communication. “We have grown steadily as a business since 2000 when we first opened the doors of our 1,500sq
ft unit and it seems fitting that this year we are investing significantly in a purpose built facility to house our decorative glass and conservatory roof divisions, even closer to our IGU facility. This will ensure the teams already operating in our now 32,000sq ft of manufacturing space will be able to work more closely together and further improve efficiencies. As well as investing in our infrastructure, we are continuing to invest in people with seven new starters joining Double R’s production team in January to ensure we stay ahead of the continued demand for our products across the board. “It’s a fantastic achievement, especially in the current climate, to have made it to 20 years young, but we wouldn’t have been able to do it without the excellent team of people we have working at Double R, or of course, the great customers and suppliers we have worked with past and present. We’re looking forward to continuing to work with quality focused companies throughout 2020 and beyond.” www.glassandroofs.com
AluK’s specification support team will be out and about throughout 2020, meeting clients and specifiers at five of the Specifi architecture events taking place around the country. The aluminium fenestration specialist will be in Leeds on March 17, and then Birmingham in April, Nottingham in May, Liverpool in June, London in July and finally Cardiff in November. Rhodri John, AluK’s Business Development Manager, said: “These roadshows are the perfect place for us to get face to face with specifiers to discuss upcoming projects and see how our window, door and curtain walling solutions can help. There’s no hard sell, the emphasis is on advice and inspiration which is why I think they work so well. “We’ll be taking samples of our products, including our new 58BW Flush window and our curtain wall, which has already sparked some interesting conversations. But, our priority will be on demonstrating how successfully we can collaborate on projects, from very early in the design process.” www.specifi.co.uk

GGF’s Brexit
Guidance Enters Transition Period Following the GGF’s Government funding for the Brexit Readiness Campaign for the Glass and Glazing industry, the GGF will now use the communication channels it has set up to ensure that companies receive up-to-date, accurate and expert guidance to help them cope with the Brexit Transition period. The Transition Period The UK left the European Union on 31st January, marking the beginning of the 11-month Transition Period. During the Transition Period, the UK will remain in both the EU Customs Union and Single Market, meaning that there will be no changes to the previous trading relationship, including free movement. However, UK and EU negotiators will seek to agree a new trading relationship during the Transition Period. The Transition Period is due to conclude on 31st December, but it could be extended if both UK and EU agree to an extension before 1st July 2020. The GGF will continue to work with Government and will relay any changes throughout the Transition Period. Here is the latest situation between the UK and EU in terms of a trade agreement. Negotiating positions Prime Minister Boris Johnson and EU Chief Negotiator Michel Barnier set out their respective opening
negotiating positions for the future trading relationships in early February. The statements confirmed that the EU will pursue a close trading relationship, while the UK will seek to diverge considerably from current arrangements. EU position Mr Barnier said that the European Union will offer the UK tariff-free access to the Single Market, if the UK would accept EU standards on a number of issues including state aid, employment and environmental standards. If the UK does not agree to alignment on these issues, the EU will offer a looser arrangement which would include customs checks and tariffs on UK/EU trade. The EU will not offer a ‘Canada-style’ trade deal, which allows comprehensive access to the Single Market without demanding alignment on key issues. UK position Prime Minister Johnson said that the UK will reject the offer of a close trading relationship with the condition of regulatory alignment. The Prime Minister reiterated the UK’s desire to pursue a ‘Canada-style’ arrangement. However, this isn’t possible, the UK will seek to leave the EU on World Trade Organisation (WTO) terms – the equivalent of a ‘no deal’ outcome. It is key to note that previous EU trade negotiations have taken significantly longer than a year to conclude, with the Comprehensive Economic Trade Agreement (CETA) with Canada taking 7 years to
agree. Given the two sides’ contrasting goals and the lack of time to reach an agreement, it is possible that no deal will be reached before the end of the Transition Period. Key issues for the companies in the glass and glazing industry As previously highlighted, nothing will change before the end of the Transition Period, and the arrangements from 1st January 2020 are subject to negotiation over the coming year. However the following is possible; Trade arrangements Trade arrangements for goods travelling between the EU and UK will be discussed in negotiations between the two parties. • If the two sides are unable to reach an agreement on the trade of goods before the end of the Transition Period, EU/UK trade would be subject to tariffs and additional VAT under WTO rules. This would also necessitate additional paperwork, in the form of import declarations. • If the sides are able to compromise on the issue of regulatory alignment, tariffs could be avoided. The GGF will provide further updates on likely implications of the trade negotiations for the glazing sector throughout the year. Standards Agreements on environmental and labour standards after the Transition WINDOW NEWS MARCH 2020 23
TRADE NEWS Period will be subject to negotiation and will be directly related to discussions on the trade of goods. The EU is aiming for alignment in these areas in exchange for free movement of goods and the UK is aiming to diverge from current standards.
a ‘points-based’ immigration system could be introduced from 2021. The GGF had input to the response on the MAC Consultation last year.
For construction products standards, Government has published legislation that mirrors the current EU Construction Product Regulation (CPR) 2013, meaning that there will be no changes to standards required for construction products imported from the EU if no agreement is reached.
• Tier 1 “exceptional talent” visa: highly qualified people who need to be endorsed as a leader or emerging leader, but do not need a job offer – capped at 2,000 offers a year.
The GGF will continue to monitor for updates relating to changes to standards that will impact on the sector in the coming months. Skills When the UK leaves the EU Single Market, free movement of labour from within the EU will end and the UK will adopt a new immigration system, under which there will be no distinction between EEA and non-EEA citizens. The Government has asked the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) to consider how
Currently, there are two types of visas for non-EEA citizens:
• Tier 2 visa: Applicant needs to match exact criteria, including having a job offer with a minimum salary of £30,000. Lower salary threshold if the applicant is on the so-called Shortage Occupation List. The MAC published its recommendations in January, including: • Government should lower the threshold for the salary needed by someone with a job offer from £30,000 to £25,600. • Government could expand this way of entering the UK by increasing the number of points awarded
to those with the most desired skills. • The new immigration system should lower the criteria for Tier 1 applicants. A lower salary threshold would be beneficial for the glazing industry, as it would enable more medium skilled workers to qualify. Government will consider the advice of the MAC before introducing legislation on the new immigration system later this year. James Lee, GGF Director of External Affairs commented, “Throughout the Brexit transition period, the GGF will continue to update the industry as and when we receive the latest information. The Brexit Hub we have set up on the GGF website, is now the go to place for the industry on all the issues affecting companies during the transition period. I would advise companies to visit the Hub to keep up to speed on all the forthcoming changes that will impact on the sector in the coming months.” www.ggf.org.uk/brexit-hub/

Glazerite Installer
Arctic Seal Creates
A Big Splash In 2020 A Glazerite and VEKA installer is starting the new decade on a high by celebrating phenomenal growth, just under three years after the company was founded. To date, Manchester-based Arctic Seal MCR Ltd has fitted over 6,500 windows all over the UK, and business is showing no signs of slowing down. Set up in 2017 by husband and wife team Shahzad and Hafsa Ashraf, Arctic Seal specialises in window and door installations for property developers, including the conversion of office blocks into apartments and houses.
knowledge’, explaining: “We work together with our fabricator, the Glazerite UK Group, and systems supplier, VEKA, to ensure our installs are of the highest quality. Both Glazerite and VEKA help us to meet the correct specifications and have provided assistance on wind loads and commercial couplings on all of our projects.
Over the next few months the installer has several largescale installs planned, including a 400 frame Tilt & Turn renovation in Worthing, East Sussex, and their first foray into the new build market.
“We also work hard to build lasting relationships with our customers, allowing us to focus on the needs and particular challenges they face. As an installer, we are flexible enough meet the demands of the market, whether that is the rise in popularity of Anthracite Grey, or fitting in with like-for-like styling at the request of local councils. Our commitment to the property development market in particular has resulted in us winning more and more business.”
Shahzad credits much of Arctic Seal’s success to ‘good suppliers, quality products and industry
Managing Director Shahzad followed his father into the fenestration business and has years of
fitting and project management expertise, including large-scale, demanding installs. One such job, their biggest to date, was the £6 million makeover of the old Great Universal Stores building in Manchester, where Arctic Seal installed 1300 VEKA M70 windows over a nine month period. The 260,000 sq. ft building has been completely transformed thanks to cladding and the installation of structurally coupled VEKA M70 windows in Anthracite Grey, giving it the modern look Manchester City Council wanted, especially given it’s the first office block people see as they arrive by train into Manchester’s Piccadilly station. All of the glazing is grey tinted, and the ground floor windows meet the Secured by Design accreditation. Now housing a number of blue-chip companies, Universal Square includes five interlinked buildings around a courtyard, as well as a restaurant, car parking facilities and a fitness centre. Shahzad says: “As an installer, we work hard to fulfil non-standard jobs, for example the use of standard frames with different levels of glass specification, whether that’s for soundproofing or dependent on elevation.” Glazerite Sales Manager, Peter Smith, says: “We first met Shahzad and Hafsa at the Fit Show in 2016, and when they set up Arctic Seal we were delighted to join them as their main fabricator. We’ve developed a great working relationship and we’re able to support Arctic Seal with deliveries tailored to meet their needs, wherever in the UK their install is taking place. What they’ve achieved in just three years is phenomenal, and we’re looking forward to continuing to support Arctic Seal going forward.” www.glazerite.co.uk WINDOW NEWS MARCH 2020 27

Centre-Pane Failure A Potential Time Bomb In Triple-Glazed Units
“When you score glass with a cutting wheel you effectively transmit tension into it. This creates a ‘fault line’ in the glass, which as you bend it, triggers a break along that line.” continued Dave. “How clean that break is – and how stable that glass is going to be, either in the furnace or in a triple-glazed unit – is defined by multiple factors including the individual characteristics of the glass; the shape of the cut; the diameter of the cutting wheel; the angle of the cut; cutting force; cutting speed; and the cutting fluid used. “Get one of those elements wrong and you increase the chances that your triple-glazed unit is going to fail under thermal stress” Bohle supplies an extensive range of tungsten carbide and PCD (polycrystalline diamond) cutting wheels and their holders, sold under its iconic Silberschnitt brand.
Bohle has warned the failure under thermal stress of centre panes in triple-glazed could cost the industry hundreds of thousands of pounds. While the uptake of triple-glazing in the UK may have lagged behind expectations, the glass consumables and hardware specialist, says with more triple-glazed units fitted in the UK, the risk of centre-pane failure under thermal stress is continuously increasing. This has prompted an EU funded study, which includes specific focus on edge-quality and how the glass is cut as a cause of failure, drawing on contributions and expert testimony from Bohle. “The use of low e on face 3 of the unit as part of its thermal makeup, can lead the middle pane in a triple-glazed unit to heat up far more than it would do in a standard double-glazed unit”, said Dave Broxton, Managing Director, Bohle. 28 WINDOW NEWS MARCH 2020
“This increases the pressure on the glass. In larger units this is less of a problem as the glass can flex and the pressure can be absorbed. “Within smaller units with shorter edges, the glass is, however, essentially too stiff to bow out and it can lead to stress cracking of the centre pane or failure of edgeseals. “The study is consequently focussed on the importance of edge-quality in defining the structural integrity of the glass – and its ability to withstand thermal stress.” As the defining factor in edge quality, the research team has drawn down on Bohle’s expertise in cutting wheel technology. This includes long standing developmental partnerships with Brembana, Grenzebach, Hegla, Intermac, Macotec and Lisec, to help them optimize performance of industrial glass cutting lines.
This includes CutMaster Gold. A highly engineered tungsten carbide cutting wheel, its ideally suited to cutting of float line and laminated glass, with a service life of eight to 10 times longer than a standard cutting wheel. Most importantly, it maintains a consistently high cutting quality from the first to the last cut. With the study due to report later this year, the study again highlights the importance of edge quality in IGU manufacture. “Edge and finish quality can deteriorate very quickly if the right cutting wheels aren’t used, or just as importantly, the cutting edge of the wheel deteriorates over time”, Dave said. “Our focus is on the development of products, which improve quality and reduce wastage, in production but which also improve edge quality and which guard against potential costs down the line”, he concluded. www.bohle.com

that offer greater flexibility – will be available, including the original in aluminium, an aluminium and timber version and the PVC-U Panoramic door that the company introduced last year in the UK. Panoramic Doors have proved popular with homeowners seeking the unrestricted openings allowed by bi-folds, but who have also recognised the restrictions of imposed by the hinged panels, says the company. Panoramic uses a system of individual panels that slide independently along a track. This allows the door to be fully opened, or in a combination of open and closed panels according
to homeowner preference. Despite this flexibility, weather protection and security are assured by the tongue and groove design through which panels are interlocked when closed. This design, combined with Panoramic’s patented hardware and operating system, provide security to PAS24. The unusual operating mechanism also enables the doors to

All locks and hinges are hidden inside the panels and frame, to offer clean and elegant lines when open or closed. All products are CE and CMS marked.

Another Mila Hero
To The Rescue
Mila’s impressive new product development programme for 2020 is now in full swing, with the launch of a new range of universal friction hinges.
Part of Mila’s Hero™ hardware essentials range, these are non-handed for quick and easy installation in both left and right-handed applications. Paul Pearson, Mila’s Product Design and Quality Director, says: “One of the most common complaints we hear from the market is that there is too much potential wastage associated with friction hinges. Too many left and right-handed versions get broken in the factory when operators fit the wrong one by mistake and that ends up costing fabricators money. “Our new universal solution puts
an end to all that, eliminating any wastage and also saving time because operators don’t need to check every time that they are fitting the right one.” Like the rest of Mila’s Hero™ products, these new friction hinges come at a competitive price point
but with no compromise on design or quality. For instance, they come with a traditional steel end cap to give the windows a reassuringly, high quality finish, The specification is Ferretic, grade 403 stainless steel combined with high performance rivets for long lasting durability, and they also feature clever SmoothSlider technology, which makes sure that they open and close smoothly every time by sitting the sliding steel parts on a nylon base. Customers can relax knowing that they also come with all the back up of a comprehensive independent test and Mila warranty programme. Weather resistance is to BSEN 1670: grade 4, operational performance is to BSEN 13126-6 and there is a market-leading 10 year guarantee. The Thermal Aluminium

4-Way From Aperture
Howells
Introduces Developments
For Ultraline The Aperture Group has announced the launch of the Stratus 4-Way lantern roof, extending its popular range of 2-Way, 3-Way and contemporary options, which the company says offers homeowners and architects, discreet and stylish roofing solutions with unbeatable thermal performance. Available in both bar length and kit options for square constructions up to 2m x 2m, customers have a choice of high performance powder coated finishes in Traffic White (RAL 9016) or Anthracite Grey (RAL 7016) on the exterior and interior. Robin Baker, Managing Director of the core Aperture business comments: “We’re delighted to bring to market another installer-friendly product that represents the very best in British engineering. Every element of the Stratus thermal lantern roof range has been designed to be exceptional and the Stratus 4-Way is no different. “Conceived from the ground up
around an innovative fully thermally broken system with the architectural refinement you’d expect from a high end aluminium lantern roof, Stratus offers a host of benefits which our customers can market and sell to end-users. It’s up to 65% more thermally efficient than other lanterns on the market and with its 200 pitch and discreet top caps and internal covers, the end result is a super modern, clean look with no unsightly gaps to rafter ends “We’ve also designed a 66% smaller ridge than standard systems which results in stunning aesthetics and better sightlines. It has a hard-wearing aluminium exterior which gives it a premium, architectural look while still being easy to install. In keeping with the trend for contemporary design, Stratus 4-Way is available in a choice of Traffic White or Anthracite Grey and glazing options include Self Clean Blue, Celsius Clear, Celsius One and Celsius Elite. www.aperture-trading.com
Howells Patent Glazing has introduced two new developments for its non-intrusive, low-pitch aluminium roof light, Ultraline, including a vented option and a minimalist steel rafter alternative for smaller roofs. Ultraline provides architects, designers, builders and contractors with the ability to maximise daylight with large expanses of glass, without compromise, says the company. An option for roofs typically measuring up to 1500mm, a steel bar divider is used rather than Ultraline’s standard glass rafter. The insulated steel rafter is part of the frame and matches the width of the standard glass rafter (40mm) but unlike the glass option, it need only be 40mm deep to meet load requirements across any span. The steel rafter offers architects and designers an enhanced minimal look. Ultraline has been independently tested for Weather tightness (BS 6375 Part 1) and Resistance to snow and permanent load (EN 14351). It is certified to PAS 24 and Approved Document Q (Security – Dwellings), offering peace of mind against low-level burglary. This delivers significant savings to glass processors where surface coating protection is being applied as part of manufacture, on-site or in retro-application.
BriteGuard® Pro is suitable for use with glass and glazed ceramic surfaces, including showers, balustrading, conservatories and windows. It works by lowering glass surface tension, significantly reducing the build-up of dirt and preventing staining and corrosion.

Travis Chiddle, Director of Right Price PVCu, says: “As a growing new build fabricator, we needed to increase our output. We looked at what the market had to offer and approached Haffner Murat after reading about the SMR5 Welder in the industry press and seeing it in action at FiT 2019.” “We were impressed by what the machine had to offer, although we were sceptical when Dave Thomas of Haffner Murat said we wouldn’t need to use our other welder when the SMR-5 came on board. In fact, he was exactly right. We 50 WINDOW NEWS MARCH 2020

Haffner Murat says with the SMR-5, one operator can weld four squares in just four minutes. It’s also capable of welding two corner/transom/ corner windows or one window outer frame and two sashes in the same four-minute cycle. In short, with the SMR-5 welder you can weld twice as many frames within the same time as a standard quad welder.
Travis concludes: “It is a breath of fresh air to come across a product that delivers exactly what the marketing claims. But the SMR-5 does. So much so, we are looking at adding a second machine when we expand our factory facilities in the next few months.”
As well as delivering exceptional speed, the SMR-5 revolutionises quality, claims the company. It guarantees 90 degree welding every time thanks to automatic head positioning and self centering for transoms, ensuring accuracy and eliminating remakes. It is also able to cope with all window

machining delivering minimum noise and maximum safety. In use, it offers the combined cutting and machining and automated material handling and sorting which Compass wanted to be able to make major increases in its volumes. It is capable of processing profile for several hundred windows per week and, because there is no profile related tooling on the machine, it allows Compass to switch quickly and easily between systems and products. A minimum profile size of 1250mm means it can be used for everything from bi-folds to curtain walling, and in built optimisation is designed to create re-usable offcuts from 850mm upwards which can be reused and reloaded alongside full bar lengths.
Compass Windows’ investment in a new Emmegi Quadra L1 12-axis machining centre helped the Dungiven based company to secure a multi-million pound supply and installation contract for four new apartment blocks in central London. The specialist trade and commercial fabricator already had an Emmegi Phantomatic M3 machining centre, Emmegi Classic Magic twin head saw and welders and crimping machines in its factory but chose to add a Quadra to its production set up so that it could increase productivity and take on larger scale projects. Patrice O’Hagan, Business Development Manager at Compass, said: “We have partnered with Emmegi on our machinery requirements for aluminium for several years and have always been very happy with the help and support they provide. What really makes the difference for us is that they have a dedicated sales and engineering
team here in Ireland who give us expert advice and fast and efficient technical support. “Because they have so many different machines in their range, we were confident that Emmegi (UK) would be able to offer us something which fitted our specific requirements when we were looking to expand and the Quadra L1 does exactly what we need it to do. “We are actively targeting new business in the fast-growing London new build market and our Quadra investment is making us much more competitive, with better productivity, shorter lead times and consistent, precision quality. We have already been awarded one major contract since the Quadra was installed and we are now looking at several more.” Emmegi’s Quadra L1 has a relatively small footprint compared with the output it can deliver and fits well within Compass’ factory workspace, with fully enclosed sawing and
Like PVC-U machining centres, cutting and machining on the Quadra L1 is in one continuous operation so very little human handling is required. For Compass, this reduces the risk of human error and has almost eliminated rejects and remakes. It can also carry out 360º machining of profile without the need to turn the bar over or process more than once, so there is no time wasted while the machine stops for profile repositioning. Emmegi provided training to the Compass team when the Quadra L1 was installed, focusing on just how easy the machine is to operate and the freely programmable, user-friendly software which is included. Patrice added: “The new machine is proving a great addition to our factory and is helping to strengthen our reputation for craftsmanship.” www.emmegi.com and https://compasswd.com WINDOW NEWS MARCH 2020 51

When it came to choosing the best glazing for a balcony and balustrades in a new, highspec Scottish home, toughened glass specialist TuffX was the only name in the frame. The single dwelling set in beautiful rural Scotland has a stunning, clear glass balcony to the rear of the property, giving uninterrupted views over the surrounding countryside while being tough enough to stand up to the harshest extremes of the Scottish weather. Inside, the minimalist, white and contemporary design is complemented with bespoke clear glass balustrades enhancing the overall feeling of light and space. TuffX supplies glass balustrading to both smaller domestic projects and large-scale commercial builds, manufactured in a range of glass thicknesses with drilled holes, cut-outs or shaping as required. In this case, the specification was for
ten panels of 12mm thick clear glass, with a polished edge finish and radius corners for a clean, contemporary appearance. The seven panels on the balcony required 14mm drilled holes, while the three for the stairs had 26mm drilled holes. As with all TuffX products, the balustrades were manufactured in-house, for unrivalled quality and lead times. “This is another great example of a successful project benefitting from our high-quality products and our experience as a leading safety glass manufacturer for over 25 years,” said TuffX’s Managing Director Graham Price. “It’s this experience, coupled with consistent investment in our factory and staff, that allows TuffX to remain flexible and consistently able to fulfil orders on a prompt 5-6 day lead time, with an express service also available.” http://www.tuffxglass.co.uk/

Kawneer Glazing Systems Are An Academy Winner
The building, also formerly a London Metropolitan University facility, was subject to a dramatic internal reconfiguration, with the core of the deep-plan multi-storey industrial space demolished and replaced with a steel-framed three-storey film production studio and supporting facilities. The general teaching and workshop spaces wrap around the centre core, responding to and utilising the existing external envelope which has remained largely unaltered in appearance. The insertion of a new rooftop courtyard with film theatre and extensive views over London completes the arrangement and provides informal social space for staff and students.
Architectural glazing systems by leading UK manufacturer Kawneer, including aluminium heritage-style windows appropriate for the conservation area, have helped to transform the façade of an old radio and television factory into the new London Screen Academy. Kawneer’s GT70S slimline renovation open-in windows were the “focal new element” of the renovation of the façade of the four-storey building at Highbury Grove in Islington, north London, where Kawneer’s AA®100 zonedrained curtain walling and series AA®190 TB entrance doors also feature. The GT70S windows with narrow sightlines were installed over 12

Architecture Initiative’s brief was to design a creative education facility that would provide an inspirational learning environment alongside specialist technical facilities to train students in all aspects of digital and film technologies. The practice’s Lee Mainwaring said: “We combined the natural features of the existing building – large windows, generous floor-to-ceiling heights, exposed finishes – with state-of-the-art new technical training facilities based on extensive research and analysis of professional film studios, to create a unique building for students and the wider community. “The building is in a conservation area so any works to the external façade were carefully WINDOW NEWS MARCH 2020 55

“The local authority planners were really happy with the upgrades to the existing building façade which had been unsympathetically altered in previous times.”
The Toddington-based fabricator supplied Sky-Frame doors on two Elements homes, alongside a selection of Schuco windows and doors. The products were installed over a period of one month.
He added: “The external windows are the focal new element of the façade renovation. The Kawneer window system, which was offered by the contractor as a more cost-effective alternative, effectively met the technical requirements needed whilst achieving a 1930s warehouse “Crittall” window lookalike. “The windows have greatly enhanced the existing façade as well as referring to the building’s history with its design. The final product was of great quality and in keeping with the design concept.” He concluded: “The façade has been visually transformed, in part through the addition of the new windows that are perfectly in keeping with the heritage of the building. From a previously dilapidated appearance, the building has been rejuvenated. We are extremely happy with such an incredible looking product.” The creation of the London Screen Academy follows a recent report published by the British Film Institute which suggested the money spent on production in the UK reached a record level of £3.16 billion across all sectors including film, television and console games. While the Sky-Frame system could easily meet the design requirements, the large panels created other challenges, specifically lifting and handling. Each glass panel weighed over 500kg.
Cotswold Windows has supplied and installed motorised Sky-Frame doors on a prestigious lake side development by Redrow, Elements at Cerney on the Water in Gloucestershire. Sitting on the northern edge of Lake 16 in Cotswold Water Park, each Elements home has been designed to complement the surroundings. They combine traditional Cotswold stone, slate roofs and textured, weathered cladding with large expanses of glazing. Central to the design were sliding doors spanning two floors, from ground to first floor. Each door was to be over four metres tall and five metres wide. Redrow appointed Cotswold Windows as glazing contractor as they could achieve the desired result without compromising the design. Their experience in handling and installing large glazed items in areas with
The glass panels had to be lifted over the properties to the lake side. The Cotswold Windows installation team then used specialist tracked mini cranes to position the panels into the Sky-Frame doors. With such heavy panels, operating the doors may have been a challenge for some homeowners and so Redrow selected the Sky-Frame fully integrated motorisation option, for the comfort of its clients. The properties are arranged in an arc, sharing the water’s edge, a southerly aspect and open views across the lake. With an exposed location and large panel sizes, Cotswold Windows needed a big, high-performance glass unit; they used 54mm units made from 10mm toughened laminate heat-soaked tested glass. In addition to realising the design, the Sky-Frame doors also achieve the frameless look and very narrow sightlines, 20mm where the panels meet. www.cotswoldwindows.co.uk

Titon Vents Help Enhance
Patient Wellbeing At New Glasgow Hospice 112 Maxiglaze glazed-in aluminium ventilators from Titon have been installed at the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice in Bellahouston Park, Glasgow. The purpose-built £21m facility provides people in Glasgow, East Renfrewshire, Cambuslang and Rutherglen with the best quality of palliative care. Designed by Ryder Architecture and built by main contractor Balfour Beatty, it is the first hospice in the UK to follow the ‘Sengetun’ model of care, which has ‘placemaking’ at the centre of its approach. The glazing contract was awarded to Castlecary-based CMS Window Systems, which delivered an extensive package of aluminium windows, doors and curtain walling. Commenting on the project, Stephen Anderson, Aluminium Director at CMS Window Systems, said: “We chose Titon’s Maxiglaze vents based on our previous experience with the
product. They have always performed to a high standard, plus they met the statutory Building Regulations and requirements for background ventilation specified for this project. Indeed, Titon is our preferred supplier of choice when it comes to glazed-in trickle vents in terms of quality, cost, service and their local representative.” The Hospice’s innovative, stateof-the-art Scandinavian design puts patients and families first, providing space for privacy, dignity and compassionate care for all ages. The project utilised 500m2 of curtain walling, while all aluminium profiles, flashings and fixing brackets were finished in RAL 1035 (Pearl Beige). The design of the windows and doors allows for maximum natural daylight and unobstructed views, adhering to the project brief for high performance aluminium fenestration throughout the building.
Titon’s Maxiglaze is an energy efficient glazed-in aluminium ventilator that provides an Equivalent Area (EA) of 12,000mm2 per metre of extrusion. This level of optimum performance over length means fewer vents are need to be fitted to achieve the total EA requirement. New Technology Makes It Easy For Installers To Sell And Homeowners To Buy TommyTrinder.com Ltd has launched its new Framepoint Technology®. Designed by installers for installers, it makes it easy to sell all types of windows and doors – regardless of manufacturer and material – via an interface that’s as simple as sketching on a pad, says the company. Developed by former installer Chris Brunsdon, it puts the fun back into selling windows! Chris Brunsdon has a great track record in the window market. Having started life in a family-owned retail window company, he set up the hugely successful, national TimberWindows.com (www. timberwindows.com), selling it after six years. He then established Jack Brunsdon & Son (www.jackbrunsdon.co.uk), growing it to a chain of 10 branches before selling that to Inwido after two years. “Buying windows should be enjoyable, like kitchens, but usually it’s anything but because the industry has made it hard for the installer to sell – and hard for homeowners to 58 WINDOW NEWS MARCH 2020
buy,” says Chris. “The number of products installers sell has mushroomed as they try to offer what customers demand. But every product has different sales aids and software. It’s virtually impossible for installers to juggle them all. So, installers use a hotchpotch of brochures, websites, desktop software and apps, and their own portfolio – or a brochure and little else because it’s so difficult to manage them all in the home! You’d have to be a brilliant salesperson to cope, and most of us aren’t brilliant. So, installers’ sales are not what they could be.”
are designed from the perspective of manufacturers to help installers order ‘correctly’ and lock them in,” Chris explains. But, with his installer background and a top technical team, Chris designed Tommy Trinder’s Framepoint Technology® with a sole focus on helping installers sell and homeowners buy. “It’s ‘probably’ the only technology that both installers and homeowners love. Think Apple versus Microsoft,” Chris explains. “It also makes it extra-easy for installers to order what they sell, whoever supplies them. And it’s got a touch of magic, the wow that everyone loves!”
Chris says this is a problem because the whole industry relies completely on how well installers sell: systems companies, hardware, software, glass, the media, and fabricators! If installers aren’t selling well, the market suffers, and everyone along the chain is held back. That’s the problem he set out to solve.
After six years of research and listening to installers, Tommy Trinder’s Framepoint Technology® was soft launched at the end of 2019. “Framepoint Technology® injects real professionalism into the installer’s pitch – it actually allows homeowners to sell the windows and doors to themselves!” Chris concludes.

Commenting about the winning Ultraframe retailers, Andrew Thomson said: “It was fantastic to see so many outstanding examples of our conservatory and extension systems being used in real life situations. The winning installations all demonstrated a high level of both design and build skills from the teams behind the installations and we’d like to congratulate each and every one of them.” The systems used in the winning installations covered much of the Ultraframe range, with Classic, Ultrasky, Livinroof, Ultraroof and the Ultrasky Lantern all featuring. Commenting on the individual winning installations, Andrew said:
“Conservatory Village – this is a stunning large-scale conservatory which has used full-length glazing and a two-tier flat cornice to create a contemporary look. An outstanding example of how well-designed glazed conservatories with carefully chosen enhancements create beautiful, modern living spaces.” Lifestyle Windows and Conservatories – “The strong, modern look of this orangery contrasts perfectly against the heritage home. A great example of how the Ultrasky Roof combines with super-insulated columns, an insulated pelmet and a flat cornice combine to create an orangery for today’s consumer.” Forest Edge Home Improvements – “Forest Edge have taken the existing footprint and really maximised the space – filling the new room with light thanks to the Livinroof panels and clever use of full height glazing. A fantastic transformation.” SEH BAC – “The team at SEH BAC have used their expertise to transform an outdated conservatory into a light, bright, open plan extension that has become the hub of the home.” Ultraframe retailers are encouraged to look out for details of the 2021 Ultraframe Design Awards later in the year to be in with a chance of winning one of the coveted titles.
