By Aviation Director Emilio T. González passenger and four all-cargo airlines, for a total of 109 carriers - the most of any U.S. airport. We opened the final four eateries in our North Terminal Marketplace, and launched a variety of new passenger amenities including version 2.0 of the MIA Airport Official app, MIAmamas nursing suites and the Plane Fun children’s play area. In April, we won the 2016 Inclusion Champion Award in the Large Hub Airport category from Airports Council International-North America, for the proactive and innovative steps we’ve taken to successfully achieve minority inclusion in our business contracts, workforce and employee development. Dr. Emilio T. González - Aviation Director
Welcome to the winter issue of Tale Winds. As we move full steam ahead into the New Year, I want to once again thank and congratulate all of you for a successful 2016. Despite travel from many of our top South American markets dropping because of their struggling economies, our passenger total still increased to a record 44.6 million travelers - our seventh consecutive year of growth. We added six
Our commitment to innovation – one of our six core values - was recognized in October by the American Association of Airport Executives’ (AAAE), who made us the first recipient of its Airport Innovation Award. Creative, cuttingedge efforts to enhance customer service and
operational efficiency such as the MIAair special-needs dress-rehearsal program, the Sustainability Project at MIA, and our Wall of Honor memorial earned us this prestigious national award, and we should all be very proud. Lastly, in December, MIA was ranked fifth among large airports in the J.D. Power 2016 North America Airport Satisfaction Study - up from 18th place in the 2015 study and its highest ranking ever. The results were based on responses from nearly 39,000 travelers who were asked to rate airports in six areas: terminal facilities; accessibility; security check; baggage claim; check-in/baggage check; and food, beverage and retail. As we reflect on last year’s achievements and our 2017 priorities, which you can read about in this issue of Tale Winds, we certainly have a lot to be excited about. I look forward to working side by side with you to make 2017 our best year ever. Sincerely,
CUSTOMER CORNER I’m writing in regards to an employee at the information desk, Richard DePaula (Terminal Operations). I just wanted to express how amazing his service was to me and my best friend DeAnna last night. She lost her cell phone around 8:15 p.m. in one of the bathrooms. Richard was already helping someone else, but he paid very close attention to our story and made phone calls to get in contact with the person who had actually retrieved the phone. He was so attentive and very friendly. I just wanted you to know that you have an amazing employee and he deserves the recognition for that and more. Thank you! ~ Angel McCoy I am writing to commend your lost and found department and especially Pierre Desdunes (Terminal Operations). Yesterday, he called me to report that he found an article I lost at MIA in May. I was astonished as I thought I would never see this painting, which I had purchased
in Cuba, again. Pierre told me he found the item, which had fallen from a shelf and discovered the receipt inside. He did an extraordinary follow up. Since there was no phone number available, he traced my name and found five listings. He left a message for me and answered my email with a phone call. Although I enjoyed other instances of courteous treatment at the airport, Pierre’s actions are far above the norm. Pierre and all of the people made my visit to your airport a pleasure. Your employees are exemplary. ~Judith Meadows
Customer Service (Lost and Found) employees, thank you so much for returning my headphones! Every staff member I talked to was polite and helpful, and I really appreciate the airport’s promptness in returning them to me. Definitely makes me want to come back. Have a great day. ~Ava Zeichner
Thank you so much Concha Gillen (Terminal Operations) for your excellent customer service! You have restored my faith in humanity. What a great surprise that my Fitbit was found and is being sent through the mail. You have no idea how the small things really make a difference in people’s day. ~Maria Tomaino, Miami MDAD Lost & Found

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT
CPB Officers Johan Candelaria, Andrew Checchia, Jairón González and Henry Ulrich named MIA’s 2016 Employees of the Year
Four U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers were named MIA’s 2016 Employees of the Year for saving a passenger’s life, after he suffered a heart attack and collapsed upon arriving at MIA from Cuba. The 65-year-old heart attack survivor and Miami resident joined MIA officials at the airport’s annual Employee Rewards and Recognition Year-End Gala on December 15 to thank and congratulate the four officers – the first time he had seen them since his near-fatal incident. On July 19, 2016, the four CBP officers – Johan Candelaria, Andrew Checchia, Jairón
González and Henry Ulrich – were working in the passport clearance area of Concourse E when they were notified that passenger Alberto Núñez Gutiérrez had collapsed and was pulseless. The officers performed multiple cycles of CPR on Gutiérrez, who was in full cardiac and respiratory arrest. In addition to CPR, officers tried to resuscitate Gutiérrez with an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). After the arrival of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR), the officers continued to assist with performing CPR and managing the scene. Gutiérrez was eventually transported to an area hospital, where he made a full recovery. MDFR noted
3
that the quick action of the CBP employees saved Gutiérrez’s life and helped to quicken his recovery. “I am extremely proud of these four outstanding CBP officers, who demonstrated the kind of courage and compassion we strive for throughout our workforce,” said Aviation Director Emilio T. González. “I also want to thank all of our monthly reward and recognition award winners from 2016, who are each customer service superstars in their own right.”

MIA Hosts Tarmac Toastmasters International Speech and Evaluation Contest By: Brenda Ellis and Sandra L. Jackson
The MIA Tarmac Speakers Toastmasters International Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contests took place on August 24. The event was attended by MDAD management and employees, airline employees and Toastmaster members. The participants were judged by Contest Chair Lisa Wilcox (Human Resources), Contest Master Michelle Washington (President of Out-of-the Box Toastmasters) and Chief Judge John Lazar (CAT Miami Toastmasters). The winners of the Humorous Speech Contest were: Myles Battle (Concession Business Development) in first place, and Tametria Harris
(Concession Business Development) was the runner-up. For the Evaluation Contest, Test Speaker Sabrina St. Jour (Terminal Operations) delivered a speech about paper airplanes to warm up the audience. The winners of the Evaluation Speech Contest were Mark Mitros (Landside Operations) in first place, and Tametria Harris was the runner-up. The club winners went on to compete in the Area 50 Humorous Speech Contest and Evaluation Contest on August 31, which took place at Carnival Cruise Lines. The contest was chaired and coordinated by Area E50 Director Sandra L. Jackson (Human Resources). Myles Battle and Mark Mitros were unable to attend, so Tametria Harris competed in both contests. She captivated the audience with hilarious, jaw-dropping events that occurred in her life, and placed second in both contests. MDAD Chief of Staff Joe Napoli, Lisa Wilcox, Brenda Ellis (Financial Planning and Performance Analysis), Sabrina St. Jour and Sandra L. Jackson were in attendance to cheer Tametria on.
On October 26, The MIA Tarmac Speakers said goodbye to Katherine James (Cash Management), who retired on October 31. Katherine is a charter member and a twotime Club past-president. The meeting “Word of the Day” was “Genuine,” which was used throughout the gathering to describe Katherine’s interactions with her fellow Toastmasters, co-workers and friends. The Table Topic questions were also centered on her example: How has Katherine James impacted your life? What are some of the characteristics you enjoy about Katherine James? There was a beautiful cake and refreshments served, with Katherine expressing happiness and appreciation.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH MIA Opens Interactive, Educational Children’s Play Area Young passengers at MIA can now take their travel experience to a whole new level with Plane Fun, the airport’s new interactive children’s play area that opened on October 13 near Gate E-5. Created in collaboration with Miami Children’s Museum, Plane Fun features six interactive, immersive exhibits that are educational and, well, just plain fun. At Plane Fun’s Control Tower, visitors become virtual air traffic controllers by listening to real conversations between the tower and airplane pilots, and viewing video of arriving aircraft. The Toddler Play Space contains a sit-in airplane, crawl-through fuselage tunnel and other tactile-learning activities for the smallest aviators. Older children can Learn to Fly by taking the controls of a remote-controlled plane and practice landings and takeoffs, or tour Miami by siting inside the cockpit of a model airplane as they Clear for Takeoff. Simulated hot air balloon rides are available in the I Spy Miami from the Sky exhibit. Last but not least, Plane Fun participants can take a photo selfie in front of unique aircraft on a five-foot-tall touch screen monitor and email themselves a lasting memory at Plane Crazy. THE FINAL WORD 2017 Priorities
We have a long list of milestones to be proud of in 2016, and even more on the horizon in the year ahead. As we embark on a new year, below are our 2017 priorities, which should be the guiding principles for all we do as an organization: • Partner with U.S. Customs and Border Protection to renovate and re-open MIA’s Concourse E Federal Inspection Services Area. • Complete the design and procurement process for MIA’s state-of-the-art Airport Operations Center (AOC). The AOC will serve as the center for monitoring, communicating, collaborating and coordinating MIA and MDAD operations. • Explore new ways to leverage technology, continue to participate in hi-tech events, invest in our employees through professional development programs, and develop shortand long-term plans for institutionalizing our culture of innovation and technology roadmap.
• Move our cargo modernization and redevelopment efforts forward through leading automation initiatives, advancing the goals of the MDAD Cargo Action Group, and developing an execution plan for the Cargo, Optimization, Redevelopment and Expansion (CORE) Program. • Take an even stronger leadership role among peer airports regarding state and federal issues in order to remain an Industry leader. • Tighten our Procurement Processes and procedures, ensure that all MIA employees are aware of them, and increase awareness regarding how to report suspicious, criminal, fraudulent or unethical activity. • Continue our strategic route expansion plan by focusing on Asia and Africa as two priority regions for new air service.
The concept for MIA’s renovated cargo area, to serve double the airport’s existing capacity
15
• Ensure that Phase I projects of the Terminal Optimization Program (TOP) such as the final E-Satellite gates and full people mover operations are completed on time and within budget. • Identify funding and grant opportunities for a robust funding plan that can address CORE and TOP capital needs. • Guarantee that MDAD has a competitive advantage over its competitors by assessing staffing needs, capabilities and succession plans. Lastly, maintaining the safety and security of MDAD’s operations and its facilities will remain an inherent top priority. Incorporating these priorities into the planning and operation of your respective divisions will pave the way for the Department’s continued success in 2017.
