WINDOW SEAT

By Aviation Director Emilio T. González given it a fresh new design. I also appreciate all of you who responded to the Tale Winds survey last month, and we will be including your suggestions in future issues as well. Some of the big takeaways from the survey were: You like to read about your fellow employees; you like the digital format; you want to hear more about volunteer and community service opportunities; and you want to keep giving feedback. I love the ideas, and please keep them coming!

Dr. Emilio T. González - Aviation Director

Welcome to the first issue of the new and improved Tale Winds employee newsletter! One of my top priorities since being named Aviation Director two years ago has been to open new doors for better internal and external communication by the Department. The new Tale Winds, along with our Mobile App, MIA Connex e-magazine, and awardwinning social media channels, have all been with that goal in mind. For the new version of Tale Winds, we’ve kept the features you know and love, added more current events about the Department, and

Since taking the helm at MDAD, I’ve also developed a real passion for numbers and statistics of all sorts. There’s the number of daily flights, the tons of international cargo moved, the number of airlines serving MIA, monthly flight operations at Opa-locka and many, many more. I’m focused on these statistics for good reason: at the end of the day, they represent the easiest, most reliable way to gauge the success of MIA and our general aviation airports. In the big grab-bag of stats that I follow, a few sets of numbers really stand out. The first set is daily passengers at MIA – I’ve been following our passenger numbers with extra enthusiasm this year, because day after day, they continue to outperform last year’s daily totals. And it isn’t 1 or 2 percent growth we’re seeing – it’s 5, 8, even 12 percent. All of these big days have added up to a record-breaking first half of 2015 for MIA. Through June, our passengers grew by 5.79 percent to 21.9 million total passengers. In fact, we’ve moved 1.2 million more passengers

in the first half of 2015 than we did in the first six months of 2014. The second set of numbers is one that I’m extremely proud of – and you should be proud, too. Last month, we got the preliminary results of our annual customer service survey and the news is fantastic across the board. Airport guests were asked about MIA’s level of customer service in three areas – departing passengers, meeters/greeters and international arrivals – and in all three areas, customer satisfaction numbers reached an alltime high. That’s a direct result of your hard work and your tremendous customer service efforts. So what’s the takeaway from all of these positive numbers? An Aviation Department that is experiencing one of the best years in its 86-year history, and a Director who is unbelievably grateful to each of you for making it all happen. Thanks as always for all that you do to make MDAD shine.

Sincerely,

CUSTOMER CORNER “I had to connect flights from Cancun to Buenos Aires and had very little time left. Ms. Lisa Anderson (Terminal Operations) was extremely helpful, available and kind to assist me and my husband.” “I was parked in 1TT and could only find 1T… I had lots of luggage and I’m 79 years old… She (Raquel Benitez, Landside Operations) helped me with my luggage and went up and down the aisles and found 1TT. I felt like she was an angel sent from God.” “Christina Gavilondo (Terminal) arrived at the gate and manually was able to open the doors for deplaning… There were over a dozen passengers who required wheelchair service and Christina made sure all passengers would exit safely.”

2

“She (Barbara Williams, Landside) was very helpful and provided a lot of attention to me and my family.” “We had a situation yesterday involving a lost passport and she (Concha Gillen, Terminal) was not only compassionate, but extremely helpful in advising us how to proceed.” “We just wanted to say thank you to your team, especially Leonel Prado (Terminal). He helped us very much and was very friendly!”

Sandra Jackson (center) was recognized at June’s employee recognition breakfast for her work with the MIA Tarmac Speakers Club.

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT

Sandra Jackson’s Greatest Joy is Helping People When Hurricane Andrew devastated South Florida on August 24, 1992, many residents faced an uncertain future. Sandra L. Jackson was one of them. She had just accepted a position in Miami-Dade County’s Personnel Department and didn’t know if she even had a job to come to. What started out as simply a new job soon turned into a career of going above and beyond the call of duty - one that lives on to this day. In those eventful weeks after Hurricane Andrew, Sandra kicked off her County career by helping fellow employees restore their shattered homes and upturned lives. She instilled hope in her colleagues by picking up debris, offering a listening ear and providing words of inspiration. Throughout her years in the County, and even more since joining the Aviation Department in 2013, Sandra has continued to serve in numerous ways beyond her job description. As an MDAD Human Resources Manager, she organizes and prepares the Human Resources

Division’s budget; manages and conducts new employee orientations; and coordinates employee development, training classes and workshops, The Idea Machine, internship programs, and health and wellness activities. In her own words, “no two work days are ever alike” - which is perfect for her. You may run into her when she’s organizing the Department’s Beginners Spanish-language classes, Lunch & Learn financial workshops, AvMed health events, Weight Watchers at Work, or the Skyride on Sky Walk Thursdays. Sandra’s greatest joy comes from helping people grow personally and professionally. One example was a student in last year’s C. Alfred Anderson Scholarship and Internship Program with Florida Memorial University, who had his eyes opened to a career he’d never considered before because he shadowed an MDAD Facilities Management employee. Another example started last year with the Weight Watchers at Work. So far, the group of

3

airport employees has lost 310 pounds in 30 weeks. Another was the joy of listening to her non-Hispanic co-workers speaking Spanish with their instructor. As the re-elected President of the MIA Tarmac Speakers Club of Toastmasters International, Sandra also works with employees to develop their speaking and presentation techniques, learn to think quickly and clearly on their feet, build strong leadership abilities and improve listening skills. Sandra’s dedication to the program is evident: The club recently received the Toastmasters International President’s Distinguished Award. A lot has changed since that fateful month 23 years ago when Sandra joined the County, but one thing that hasn’t is her passion for serving her fellow workers. She aims to live by the words on one of her office posters: “Enthusiasm is the match which lights the candle of achievement.”

LUNCH & LEARN SEMINARS Financial Planning By Sandra L. Jackson

The Human Resources Division has coordinated nine informative financial planning seminars this fiscal year, with more on the way. So far, an average number of 15 employees have actively participated in these Lunch & Learn seminars from noon to 1:00 p.m at Building 5A.

Gets in the Way – Protecting Your Finances, smart guidelines to follow when making insurance decisions was the topic. Back-to-back sessions started off the summer 2015. The first seminars were Your Saving and Investing Goals on June 16, which focused on making realistic goals, and Investing for Retirement: Just the Basics on June 17, which introduced basic investing concepts, including risk, asset allocation, diversification, rebalancing, market-timing, and dollar-cost averaging. Making Your Money Last in Retirement on July 23 concentrated on dealing with market volatility, making your money last, and preserving flexibility to keep your options open. In all of the seminars, brochures were provided for additional information.

The first workshop was Holiday Survival Guide, hosted by Consolidated Credit Counseling Services on November 20, 2014. The 45-minute presentation covered holiday budgeting, how to save money on family activities and gift purchasing, and strategies to avoid overspending and impulse buying. In 2015, five 50-minute seminars have been presented by Tony Chifari, an ICMA-RC Retirement Plans Specialist, along with Hortensia Perez, a Certified Financial Planner. In the spring, the first session on March 18 titled The 10 Question Retiree Guide focused on 10 key questions you should ask, from saving, to Social Security and Medicare, and managing your investments, withdrawals and taxes. The next session was Women and Financial Planning on April 21, which reviewed case studies on building retirement security and personal finance. In the May 8 seminar, When Life

The remaining financial planning workshops for the summer are Five Reasons to Choose a Payroll Roth IRA on August 25, and Estate Planning for Everyone on September 1. These seminars will also deliver valued financial planning information.

FMU Students Complete MDAD Internship Program By Sandra L. Jackson

Spry); Civil and Environmental Engineering (Jacqueline Powell); Airport Concessions and Business Development (Tametria Harris); Real Estate Management and Development (Frantz DeVilme, Michele Raymond); and Public Safety and Security (Odalys Bello, Lloyd Evans, Frances Pera). The interns also received interview skills training, participated in the “Miami Begins with Me” Customer Service Excellence Training, and took part in MDAD’s Annual Black History Celebration.

The C. Alfred Anderson Scholarship and Internship Program, established by the MiamiDade Aviation Department in 1993, provided internship opportunities this spring to eight students from the Department of Aviation and Safety at Florida Memorial University.

A number of MDAD divisions were instrumental in complementing these students’ formal education with career-related experience. Those divisions and supervisors were: Airside Operations (Lorenzo Cruz, Jim Murphy); Landside Operations (Mark Mitros, Mike Pino, Jimmy

A luncheon to congratulate the interns was held on April 27 at Florida Memorial University, with MDAD Director Emilio T. Gonzalez and FMU President Dr. Roslyn Artis in attendance. A certificate and a stipend of $2,500 were issued to each intern. MDAD believes these undergraduates discovered new interests, refined their talents, and developed their abilities for future employment and academic opportunities. The internship participants continue to make us proud. Elvis Richardson, a 2013 intern, was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Air Force on May 2 at the University’s commencement exercises.

THE FINAL WORD

MIA Hosts Honor Flight for War Veterans Miami International Airport, in partnership with Honor Flight South Florida and Eastern Air Lines, capped off National Military Appreciation Month by hosting its first-ever Honor Flight for more than 60 World War II and Korean War veterans on May 30. After departing MIA Saturday morning on Eastern Air Lines flight #1941 (named for the year that the U.S. entered World War II), the 60 living legends received tours of the World War II and Korean War memorials and other military sites in the nation’s capital – many for the first time in their lives. On the return trip aboard flight #1945 (the last year of the war), nearly 3,000 personalized thank-you letters collected at MIA from airlines, federal agencies

and other airport tenants, as well as from local school children and civic organizations, were distributed to the veterans during a traditional “mail call” for deployed soldiers. The MiamiDade Aviation Department spearheaded the letter-writing campaign and gained support from more than a dozen airport and community partners. The Honor Flight event culminated with a homecoming at MIA, where more than 1,000 South Floridians gathered to take part in a massive receiving line that included local residents of all ages, local and federal elected officials, numerous honor guards, airport employees and passengers. The event also marked Eastern’s first domestic passenger flight since its re-launch this year.

“We were extremely honored to host our firstever Honor Flight at MIA, and we look forward to hosting additional flights in the future,” said Miami-Dade Aviation Director Emilio T. González. “I can think of no better cause for the MIA community to rally around than to celebrate the men and women who fought for the freedoms we all enjoy today. They were truly The Greatest Generation, yet most of them never received a homecoming like the one they enjoyed today. We were proud to partner with Honor Flight South Florida and Eastern Air Lines to pay tribute to them, and we look forward to hosting more in the coming years.”

DID YOU KNOW?

MIA is Installing the Largest Energy Saving Program in Florida MIA is on its way to becoming one of the greenest airports in America, thanks to the Sustainability Project – a massive installation of new energy and water conservation equipment that will save the airport more than $40 million over the next 14 years. The project, being installed by FPL Services in coordination with the Aviation Department, is the largest energy savings program ever in the state of Florida and one of the largest in the eastern U.S. The installation of $32 million worth of brighter, energy-efficient lighting, water conservation retrofits, air conditioning and ventilation upgrades and other measures at MIA will have the effect of reducing the annual carbon emissions of 5,110 automobiles, conserving 17 million kilowatts of energy, and saving 28 million gallons of water – the equivalent of 43 Olympic-size swimming pools. The Aviation Department will also be able to streamline its maintenance costs by upgrading and standardizing 400 different types of lighting fixtures down to one, and replacing more than 65,000 light bulbs with new energyefficient ones. Known as the Sustainability Project at MIA, the project requires FPL Services to install the energy conservation measures throughout the terminal within two years, and guarantees that the airport will achieve more than $40 million in savings over the 14 years from implementation. In addition to the drastically reducing the airport’s environmental footprint and saving tens of millions of dollars, the project will also create more than 300 new jobs during construction.

As one of Miami-Dade County’s largest energy consumers, the Sustainability Project will make MIA one of its most environmentally friendly consumers as well. Being an energy-smart airport is also smart business. The $40 million in savings will help us to better manage our operating costs that are passed on to the airlines, which in turn helps us retain and attract current and prospective carriers. “I applaud Assistant Aviation Director Carlos Jose and our Facilities Management and Engineering Division for working with FPL Services to develop and implement this innovative program, which continues our history as a global leader in airport sustainability,” said Miami-Dade Aviation Director Emilio T. González.
