A guaranteed return – and more
Guaranteed
interest accounts provide interest income, insurance benefits and flexibility.
There is almost always a place for secure, guaranteed investments in an investor’s portfolio. They can help reduce the volatility of a balanced mix of stocks and bonds, and they can deliver a steady stream of interest income to help support lifestyle goals.
A guaranteed interest account (GIA) offered by an insurance company has some interesting additional benefits that can help investors achieve other objectives.
What is a GIA?
A GIA is an insurance contract that pays interest at a guaranteed rate, like a bank-issued guaranteed investment certificate (GIC). A variety of terms are available ranging from short-term to long-term. Either way, at maturity, investors can choose to reinvest their original investment plus the interest they have earned.
Importantly, once purchased, the interest rate does not fluctuate with the markets. On top of that, a GIA offered by an insurance company offers extras like tax and estate planning benefits, as well as potential creditor protection
Tax planning benefits
Every dollar saved in tax is an extra dollar available to save or invest – and a GIA can provide tax savings in two ways for non-registered accounts. First, investors can defer taxes on GIA interest for up to one year. Second, when investors are age 65 or older, GIA interest income may qualify for the pension income tax credit and for pension income splitting with a spouse or common-law partner.
Estate planning benefits
Most people want their assets to transfer quickly, cost-effectively and privately to their beneficiaries. Because a GIA is an insurance contract, it allows for the naming of a beneficiary. This means the proceeds can be paid directly to the beneficiary and avoid the estate, and therefore probate where applicable, and potential delays and associated costs, as well as public scrutiny in a probate court.1
Potential creditor protection2
Professionals and small business owners often worry about protecting their personal assets from creditors. If they’re sued or the business runs into financial difficulties, creditors may have the right to seize what they own personally. GIAs have the potential to help with creditor protection during the investor’s lifetime, as well as after death when the death benefit passes directly to a named beneficiary outside the estate. It is very important to consult with a legal advisor to discuss the rules surrounding eligibility for creditor protection.
Why choose a GIA?
Many investors choose GIAs primarily to help protect part of their portfolio from market exposure and to guarantee a predictable return. Tax and estate planning benefits and potential creditor protection can be attractive extra features.
Depending on the structure of the GIA, investors may also benefit from flexibility to move in and out of the markets in response to volatility or changing financial needs. That’s because some GIAs are offered in contracts that also offer segregated funds. This means that it may be possible to transfer between the GIA and a segregated fund that provides access to market growth.3 This transfer would be subject to fees.
For investors looking for security and stability in an unpredictable world, GIAs can help safeguard capital and deliver guaranteed rates. Unlike some market-dependent investments, GIAs also qualify for deposit protection from Assuris on investments up to $100,000. Speak with your advisor about whether a GIA may be appropriate for your needs and goals.
Can a GIA provide a guaranteed interest rate?
Yes. GIAs offer a guaranteed interest rate from the day money is invested until maturity.
Does a GIA qualify for deposit protection on investments up to $100,000?
Yes. Assuris (which protects Canadian insurance policyholders) provides additional protection.
Is it possible to access money invested in a GIA before maturity? Yes. Fees may apply.
Are term choices available? Yes.
Is it possible to designate a beneficiary on a GIA? Yes.
Does a GIA offer the estate planning advantages that come with avoiding probate? Yes.
Is GIA interest income potentially eligible for the pension income tax credit and pension income splitting when the owner is age 65 or older? Yes.
Is it possible to hold a GIA in an RRSP, RRIF, TFSA or non-registered account? Yes.
How can I invest in a GIA?
You have to get them via a life-licensed advisor, as they are issued by insurance companies.
1 In Quebec, the probate process and the probate fees (which are minimal) only apply to non-notarial wills. In Saskatchewan jointly held property and insurance policies with a named beneficiary are included on the application for probate but do not flow through the estate and are not subject to probate fees.

Publisher’s Note
I have just reread my last four Holiday Pub Notes and have concluded that they all sound the same. The Season is upon us… Well, it is! And we should enjoy it!
Shannon Dion Patient Care Coordinator
Enjoy, with our families and friends, all that we have. Enjoy the fact that our part of the world is at peace, while many other areas are in turmoil. Many of us take harmoniousness for granted; we are lucky to have that luxury.
Although some challenges are being cast upon us, the future, especially in our area, looks like we will be enjoying prosperity for some years to come.
Even with the colder weather coming, construction seems to be in an all-ahead motion. New neighbourhoods are being constructed. One only needs to take a drive to see that our communities are changing quickly and for the better. The area is moving forward, and we are living our lives to the fullest again. And we are not looking back.
Organizations and people of our area are showing the strength that we always knew was here.
The St. Clair College Saints Football team have become Canadian Champions. The Saints rallied from a 13-point deficit to win the national football title after a 25-year drought; after dominating every team they played all year. In four of those games, the Saints didn’t allow a single point by the opposition.
For the second time in just 3 issues, a local actress is on our cover and, once again, one with international exposure. In conjunction with the highly successful Windsor International Film Fest which recently wrapped up, our area is being recognized for its immense talent in television and film making. Not just acting, but there are several creators in our area who are filming and producing their art right here in Essex County.
In closing, I am finishing off the year in good health. I have not always been able to say that, and now refuse to take it for granted. I am thankful for my good health and that of my family, staff, friends and customers.
I want to thank our loyal readers and our dedicated advertisers. Without you, we could not do what we do every day.
Happy Holidays.

ACTING EVERYTHING BUT HER AGE
A Young Actress’ Journey to the Big Screen
STORY BY SERAFINA PIASENTIN PHOTOGRAPHY BY HEIKE DELMORE
BORN INTO AN ACTING FAMILY, it’s no surprise that ten-year-old River Price-Maenpaa became an actress herself. Growing up watching her parents, Elinor and Matt, acting in Windsor plays and on TV shows such as Chucky and the Handmaid’s Tale, River became inspired. “I can’t really remember anything else I wanted to be besides an actress,” River says.
It all started at a Huggies photoshoot when she was four. Later, in 2020, she booked her first role playing Laurel in “Tales From the Loops,” an Amazon Prime series. In 2021, she was given a fun part in “Blue’s Clues & You.”
From the beginning, acting for River was always a family ordeal. Every step of the way, River’s parents were there to support her and offer her guidance from their own acting careers. Not to mention the roles the family participated in together. The Price-Maenpaa’s, including River’s younger brother, Kai, shot a McDonald’s commercial. River and her parents were integral in a Canada Life commercial, and River and Matt were featured in a Saputo milk commercial as well. Elinor comments how fun these were to do as a family, fostering lifelong bonds.
But it was clear that River was made for a bigger screen. “River was always in a hurry. She started talking when she was ten months,
Clockwise from left: Ten-year-old actress River Price-Maenpaa; River at a photo shoot in Toronto with Nick Reuper Photography; River and Sarah Gadon in North of Normal (the hitchhiking scene); River in North of Normal the movie (the makeup scene). Photos courtesy of Elevation Pictures.
skipped crawling and went straight to walking at a very young age and she has been go, go, go ever since,” Elinor says. River’s curious and wonder-filled personality gives her the foundation for a thorough actress. She is able to really dig into the characters she is playing. This was evident in her first big TV job.
River received an audition call from her agent for “North of Normal” which premiered at TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival) in 2022 and was released in 2023. This film is based on Cea Sunrise Person’s experience growing up in the wilderness with an addict teen mom, and how she found her way through the world and onto the runways of Paris. River was instantly offered the role of young Cea. “My mom, dad and I screamed so loud at that moment. I couldn’t believe it. As soon as I was on set, I knew we had something special here,” says River.
She explains how challenging it was to get into the character of Cea as, by contrast, River has a bountiful and loving childhood. “I was lucky to meet the real Cea on location. We spent some time together; that made me feel good seeing her and knowing she is okay now.”
River also had help from Elinor, who helped explain what happened to Cea growing up. “There was one scene where Cea’s mom leaves her with her grandparents for a few years. That was a hard scene for me. I would be very sad if my mom left me for a few years,” she says. Putting herself in the shoes of her character helps solidify River into the role.
Elinor describes how she contributes to River’s memorization method, saying, “First, we read the script together. Then, we talk about what is happening in the scene. I make sure she understands it before we start memorizing. After every line we read, I have her repeat it to me. We do that a few times before moving on to the next line. Once one page is read, we repeat it again and again.” This process continues for every page of the script. “River is so quick it’s incredible!” Elinor exclaims. “She can learn her four-page scene in less than an hour.” Once the lines are ingrained in River’s head, the mother-daughter duo focuses on the acting aspect—who she is, what is happening, what does she want in the scene and so on.
When River found out the film was to debut at TIFF, she was thrilled but unsurprised. “It is a beautiful film, and I am very lucky to be a part of it.” She describes the
festival as one of the best days of her life. She recalls dressing up and meeting all these great people, especially noting how excited she was to stay up late at the after-screening party.
However, being so young, River touches on some drawbacks she has to adapt to. Most of her projects, including “North of Normal,” are not for kids. “I never really see myself too much on screen,” River says. “At TIFF, I went on stage before the movie, but for the actual screening, I was not there. My mom and dad told me that when I get older, we can watch it all together.” Not only is she unable to watch the films she stars in, but she also cannot remain on set for prolonged periods of time. Since she is a minor, there are certain restraints she must adhere to. River says, “I love, love, love being on set, around the whole crew, playing pretend. I wish I could be there all day long, but my mom has to drag me off set sometimes.”
Despite her young age, River has a firm foothold in the acting world. Elinor calls every role, radio interview, or article an “adventure” and River says she cannot wait for more. While shooting “North of Normal,” she booked and filmed a part in “Ruby and the Well” as young Ruby. This year, she filmed a lead part in a feature film shot in New Brunswick called “Unseen” (coming 2025). The Price-Maenpaa family travelled to the east coast for three weeks to focus on the filming. The story is about a family that fell apart right before Covid. River mentions being even more grateful for her supportive household while memorizing these lines. After this, River obtained a guest star role in a new FOX show called “DOC” (airing January 2025). Just last month, she booked a role in season three of the show “The Way Home.” She admits “it’s been a busy and exciting year.”
River’s ability to juggle various acting roles, slipping into the mindset of all these different characters while still maintaining a strong sense of self is admirable. This tenyear-old is beyond blessed to not only know what she is interested in, but also to be consistently doing what she loves, while most people her age still don’t know what they like, let alone what their life will look like. Elinor says her daughter’s “future will be wonderful. How it will look like exactly, I have no idea. Whether it is acting or something else, we will support her.” With her family cheering her on and teaching her, River’s future does indeed seem as bright as a TV screen. WLM

A House Full of
Christmas
The Collavino House Takes Decorating for Christmas and Family Entertaining Seriously
STORY BY ALYSIA THERRIEN / PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOHN LIVIERO
THE DECORATIONS ARE HUNG by the chimney with care, in hopes that our loved ones will soon want to share! The holidays, that is, which as you know are always a busy time of year. Yet, to the Collavino family, it is the perfect time to fill the house with holiday magic.
Paula and Renzo Collavino, a local Lakeshore couple, have become THE host for their family holidays. Year after year, the two create a Christmas atmosphere that spans from the outside of their house, through the foyer, to the kitchen and nestles right under their living room fireplace.
According to Paula, it all starts with the tree. The Collavinos have been purchasing a real Christmas tree since they were first married in 1990. Their first tree, a potted tree to accommodate their apartment, is now planted in the yard of Paula’s childhood home. “I’ve always had a real
Clockwise from above: Turtle doves sit perched on the shelf set upon real evergreen tree trimmings; another Christmas staple, the nutcracker; the living room is captured showing the stockings on the mantel, with of course the show stopping tree; Mrs. & Mr. Claus (Paula and Renzo Collavino).
Christmas tree growing up, so my past definitely spearheaded our Christmases,” Paula remarks about her urge to maintain the festivities.
Keeping with tradition, Paula has made a point to begin her holiday decorating right around the time of American Thanksgiving. A process she states that takes about a week to complete and includes a nativity set on the mantle, real Christmas garland and a collection of flowers. The centerpiece, the tree, has over 1500 lights and hosts all sorts of ornaments, which includes the annual Swarovski ornament addition each year thanks to their in-laws.
It doesn’t stop there! Each light fixture, table and corner is filled with holiday fixings. “Whatever you see, when someone walks in, is decorated!” says Paula. She further explains how the front and backyard follow suit like the indoor decorating. The back patio hosts a string of lights and an outdoor firepit. In past seasons when there has been enough snow, the family has packed together snow blocks to create chair-like seating.
Although the bulk of the season preparations happen in a week, Paula is on the scout for a particular holiday signature during early fall. Chestnuts, which Paula shares, if bought locally are ready in early October and sell out fast. A nearby chestnut orchard is her go-to because she claims the store-bought ones are just not as sweet. She shares her experience with the roasting process and how, “The local ones, the chestnut just slides right out,” compared to the store-bought ones that often stick. Without meaning to, she references her holiday expertise just by sharing her knowledge of perfecting the roasting of the chestnuts in the oven, or on the fire if you prefer.
With all this prep comes the moment the Collavinos have prepared for; the guests arriving! When you attend a holiday party hosted by Paula and Renzo, you can expect awe from every detail. From the surprise balloon drop in the foyer, where a collection of balloons have been strung up to the ceiling and will release by the pull of a string, to themed drinks, the Collavinos prepare to impress.
They prepare appetizers, like freshly cut prosciutto on a large wood board crafted by Paula’s brother, tiramisu in martini glasses, and crushed candy cane rimmed glasses filled with a festive cocktail. “Anything I can think of to be creative; I’ll do it!” says Paula. Of course, the chestnuts s
Pat Soulliere LLD Generational Wealth Preservation Strategies
make their appearance near the end, which the Collavinos pair with mulled wine.
The Collavino house is the spot for holidays and they claim each year gets bigger and bigger. They enjoy treating everyone, Paula puts plainly, and they have been since they were married. “We’ve always entertained,” says Paula, “it’s an entertaining house!” Paula and Renzo recall how both their parents used to take on the entertaining, but now they have “picked up the ball”. All the holidays are important to Collavinos and their extended family, which they mark by making sure they always get together. The biggest, however, is Christmas, so Renzo and Paula have taken on the task of ensuring they make it feel that way.
A new edition to their family has sparked a new holiday tradition. A few years ago, Renzo happened to be growing out his facial hair for Movember when their daughter-in-law’s two-and-a-half-year-old nephew saw him and shouted: ‘Santa’! From that point on, every time the couple saw the young boy, Renzo was referred to as the man in red. Of course this led to the next big purchase: the Santa suit. From that moment on, the tradition came that Renzo plays Mr. Claus and he delivers the gifts himself to the children of the family. The couple have recently become grandparents themselves and are now eager to keep the magic going for their grandson.
Paula shares how even the Santa suit has plans for revisions this year, only proving their dedication to keeping the holidays alive and well. Whether it be adding a new festive pillow or a ribbon for the tree, they like to keep things fresh.
Although they have gathered numerous things throughout the years, the Collavinos like it when these things can spread cheer a bit further. Paula shares that she likes to bring holiday items to a familiar county thrift shop, which is run by volunteers. “Everything goes to the community, and they are collecting stuff for Christmas,” she explains. With boxes of things to go through, she hopes she can bring them in to help them raise some money.
With all the busyness of the season, somehow all the things that are needed to do find their way to get done. Whether that means putting things together at the last minute or staying up all night, which Paula admits she’s done. It takes great dedication to create a house full of Christmas, but it pays off when everyone is together and enjoying it.

THE BEST OF ALL WORLDS
Hip, Historic and
Happening
STORY BY KAREN TINSLEY

BY
JOE STEINER
WINDSOR’S STORIED WALKERVILLE neighbourhood has been basking in the glow of a long-lasting renaissance. Ever growing, ever changing, yet remaining rooted in history and tradition, Walkerville was described by MSN online as “the perfect blend of hip and historic.”
Also calling it one of the coolest neighbourhoods in North America, MSN ranked Walkerville with Toronto’s Kensington Market and West Queen West, the North End in Halifax, South Main in Vancouver, Byward Market in Ottawa, Old Strathcona in Edmonton and Quebec City’s Upper Town.
What makes a neighbourhood cool? It’s a fun blend of good food, plenty of arts and culture, a vibrant nightlife and perhaps most importantly, a distinct lifestyle.
This magnificently restored and renovated home in the heart of Walkerville is situated directly across from ‘the crown jewel’ of the neighbourhood: storied, stately Willistead Manor (the home of Hiram Walker’s second son Edward). s
Clockwise from left: A La Cornue range and avagado stone island elevate this kitchen; french doors and an original spindle staircase in the foyer; oversize chess pieces against cutting edge Jean Paul Gauthier wallcovering; the timeless black-andwhite motif continues in the spacious dining room.
Built around the Hiram Walker distillery (complete with homes and schools for workers and their families), Walkerville eventually became part of Windsor, but the legacy lives on today in the idealist wide streets, notable green spaces, meticulously restored Victorian-era homes and other original buildings.
Embracing every aspect of hip, historic, happening and cool, our featured home has been a labour of love for homeowner and Creative Director David Burman, President of Mister Style. After transforming this not-quite-century home to new glory, David describes it as his “love letter to Walkerville.”
When talking about it, David can barely contain his pride and joy. Embracing the heritage, history and ‘happening feel’ of this nostalgic neighbourhood, every room has been restored to the next level, and then some.
Aiming to create a home that could attract new life to the community, “such as a family relocating to Windsor from elsewhere who can genuinely appreciate this unique neighbourhood,” David adds, “Walkerville has a holistic, organic and boisterous vibe. It truly is hip, historic, happening and cool; the best of all worlds!”
Throughout the restored residence, loving attention has been paid to authentic details, as well as modern design tweaks and amenities; David s
Clockwise from opposite: Mid-century modern oatmeal-upholstered wing chairs flank a chic pedestal table in the airy sitting room; state-of-the-art Cubist-inspired vanity and hammered glass panels invoke a spa-like vibe; a rugged stone pedestal table and more Jean Paul Gauthier wallcovering crowns custom wainscotting; decorative graduated wall moldings create the ideal backdrop for big art; oversize ‘golden globe’ pendant lamps anchor the bed and add warmth.
says the house ‘has good bones’ (meaning it’s in fantastic condition underneath, where it counts. In short, was a ‘diamond in the rough’).
The classical opulence of this home is reminiscent of the heady Roaring 20’s and Dirty 30’s eras, when Hiram Walker was building mansions in Windsor for his top business executives and their families.
As everyone knows, the kitchen is the heart of every home, and this bright, sleek airy space features a La Cornue range.
Invented and developed in 1908 in Paris France, the world’s first convection oven featured a vaulted ceiling to usher heat around food, rather than trapping it to burn underneath.
RuPaul fans are likely familiar with La Cornue, because the entertainer/influencer promotes this luxury brand on social media. Handcrafted for more than a century in the French countryside, these appliances are considered works of art by their owners. Each range can be engraved with a family name or crest, along with other premium custom options.
A black-and-white checkered Mackenzie Childs kettle on the range top balances luxury with a touch of ‘je ne sais quois’ whimsy.
In a daring design statement, Dimanti Stone Countertops installed a stunning Avagado Italian Quartzite stone kitchen island (with its deep, warm green hues and black and white accents swirled throughout) beneath drum-shaped organic, concrete pendants, elevates this all-white kitchen to a whole new level.
The foyer, flanked by French doors and its original wooden spindle staircase, is tiled in classic black-and-white flooring for a grand, traditional feel. You can almost hear the lively laughter and chatter of dinner guests as they arrive, all decked out in their Art Deco furs and finery.
In the elegant family room, the blackand-white motif continues with a creamy L-shaped banquette and ‘Yonkers’ style white upholstered chairs around a striking black ebony bullet table. A unique white enamel candelabra chandelier is the star of the show; a reflective art piece and pristine, breezy white gauze floor-to-ceiling curtains bring in a breath of fresh air.
Edgy Jean Paul Gauthier ‘Croquis’ black/ ecru wallcovering is used strategically throughout the home to add style and panache (expertly hung by Wallpaper Masters); oversized ebony chess pieces atop a dark modular armoire create cool ambience.

interior design element. A well-balanced space feels welcoming, comfortable and ‘just right’. Not only can varying proportions create balance, but it can also add interest and contrast. In this light-filled sitting area, a pedestal table with a dramatic trio of ceramic vases is nestled between a pair of modern, oversize oatmeal-upholstered wing chairs, creating symmetry as well as balance. This inviting space just calls out, “stay for tea (or cocktails!)’’.
A glossy, black Cubist-inspired vanity, luxe gold fixtures and hammered glass evoke a Zen bathroom experience.
Ceiling height plays an important role in home design. The clever strategy of hanging curtain rods over and above window tops (to accommodate floor-to-ceiling drapes) gives the illusion of higher ceilings, which can open up any room. Versatile California shutters let the shine in or shut it out whenever needed.
In one of the bedrooms shown here, positioning the head of the bed in front of the window and anchoring it with oversize gold brass globe pendants infuses a warm glow into a neutral colour palette.
Embracing negative space (the empty areas around furniture) is also an important home design element. Negative space allows our eyes to rest, while creating space to pass through or sit and breathe freely— without feeling crowded.
In the Great Room, for example, where connection, conversation and relaxation are the goals, decorative graduated wall panel molding provides texture, visual interest and the perfect backdrop for an artistic piece de resistance framed in gold. The inviting natural tones and hues in this work infuse the entire space with warmth and comfort.
“I wanted this house to breathe memories, so you’d walk in and expect to find something interesting happening,” says David. “It’s truly a reflection of Walkerville.”

BUILDING A BRIGHTER FUTURE
FOR ALMOST FIFTY YEARS, Lakeview Montessori School has provided the community with a transformative and authentic Montessori education for students, fostering their curiosity, their creativity, and instilling a lifelong love of learning in each of them.
“Places in Lakeview are sought-after because we are an authentic Montessori school,” says Kristin Barone, Director of Community Development & Assistant Head of School. “Parents want the kind of educational foundation we build for our students. It is worth noting that our students range in age from infants to grade eight. We are a very unique school.”
Lakeview Montessori is now expanding and seeking sponsors and partners interested in making the greatest of all investments: in the education of Essex County children.
The expansion at Lakeview Montessori will accommodate a middle school, which will be designed with flexible seating and the latest learning tools to encourage collaboration and innovation. Among the programs that will occur in the expanded space, there will be a culinary program structured to introduce young students basic cooking skills, nutrition, and kitchen safety.
“We also plan on creating a STEM lab and robotics room,” Kristin explains, “spaces equipped for hands-on exploration in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. This will include pneumatics, First Lego League—also known as ‘FLL’—along with coding and computer science.”
nature-based spaces where students can engage in environmental education and outdoor play.
“As a not-for-profit school, every dollar we receive is invested back into our programs, staff, students, and facilities,” says Kristin.
The names of donors will be acknowledged on a Donor Wall in the new space.
“If they sponsor a room, they get a plaque just outside of that room,” Kristin says. “Or in the outdoor learning spaces, their name will be honoured on a plaque or a bench.”
There are numerous ways to give.
In keeping with the well-rounded approach to education at Lakeview Montessori, there will also be an art studio—an environment where students can develop their artistic talents and express their individuality. The planned acoustic rooms and performance spaces that will nurture a love for music, drama, and the arts.
“There will even be a ‘Mess Maker Space,’” Kristin says. “This space will encourage exploration, creativity, and problem-solving by allowing students to manipulate materials, experiment with different tools, and work on unstructured projects for all ages from preschool to grade eight.”
Last but not least will be the outdoor learning areas. These will be
“Donors can make direct donations,” Kristin says. “They can sponsor a classroom or an outdoor space. People can make a pledge to give over time, spreading their gift across several months or years. And we always welcome in-kind contributions—donations of materials or professional services to help us complete the project.”
Renee Ryerson, Head of School, adds: “Educators around the world are rethinking what and how we teach. Lakeview Montessori will continue to adapt to the ever-changing world to meet the emerging needs of our students, families, and community. Being a leader in education ensures that every learning environment is equipped to encourage critical thinking and one that elevates our students’ life skills as well as academic skills to solve challenges and prosper successfully in the world.”

MORNINGS WITH MIKE AND MEG
More Than Twenty Years On, The #1 Morning Show In Windsor-Essex Continues To Evolve
STORY BY MATTHEW ST. AMAND / PHOTOGRAPHY BY MIKE KOVALIV
MEG ROBERTS’ FIRST APPEARANCE as co-host of Mornings With Mike & Meg on AM800—with veteran broadcaster Mike Kakuk—was momentous for her in more than one way. Certainly, it was a milestone in her career, starting a new position, putting her voice and personality out there for a large listening audience.
“It was also my 30th birthday that day!” she says with a laugh.
Meg has made good use of those thirty years, working as a video journalist with CBC Windsor in 2016, taking an opportunity in Newfoundland and Labrador in 2018, moving to Toronto to take a position as news reporter in 2022, and then finally returning to Windsor CBC in the summer of 2023.
“It has really come full circle,” Meg says. “I grew up on a forty-acre farm right in the heart of Essex County. I went to Colchester North Public School, and I have to say that the things I learned there really gave me the skill set to do well in life!”
Meg does not spend much time living in the past. Her present is pretty busy.
“Some of our listeners may think we only work four hours a day, but the reality is we’re at it throughout the day,” says Meg’s co-host Mike Kakuk, who, more than twenty years ago, was the new kid on the block, taking over hosting duties following the retirement of venerable Cam Gardiner.
“After leaving at nine a.m.,” Mike continues, “planning for the next day’s show begins. News happens all day long and we have to respond. We interact with our audience, we know what they’re talking about, what concerns them. Whether it’s shredded pepperoni on their pizza,
local events or the American presidential election. We have more of a mix of news.”
There is also the task of lining up guests to interview the next morning. As news changes through the day, this may throw the initial plan into a tailspin. Mike and Meg have to take that in stride, so they present their audience with what’s happening now.
Beyond these practical aspects of Mornings With Mike & Meg, the core of the show has always centered on the on-air personalities.
As long-time co-host of The Morning Drive, Lisa Williams said in an interview following her retirement: “I’ve been really fortunate that I have had two co-hosts who worked so well with me. You can’t fake it because it wouldn’t last long. You’d hear the tension. The show wouldn’t flow. It wouldn’t be as fun.”
So, when Lisa retired after thirty-eight years, it seemed an insurmountable task to find a replacement for her.
“Nobody can fill that seat,” says Mike who co-hosted with Lisa for more than twenty years. “Lisa did an amazing job. We began our search looking for someone who had broadcast experience. We definitely wanted someone who was local. This area is very passionate about where we come from, what we build. And then we found Meg. She has youth and experience, and she is local. We were confident she had the talent to make the transition from television to radio.”
“Radio is a different platform,” Meg says. “It’s more intimate. There is more time on radio. I get the opportunity to interact with a greater number of people, daily—so many people call in or text us. That’s a huge difference. And I’m having fun already—not that I wasn’t having
fun in TV! News is a stricter platform. It’s very scripted and not as spontaneous.”
Another significant difference is the show’s early hour.
“I’m still getting used to getting up at 4 a.m.!” Meg says. “After I look at the clock, I realize I have this amazing show to go to. I’m very grateful that I am part of helping people start their day.”
We asked Mike, what has been the response from the listening audience?
“They have accepted and enjoyed Meg,” Mike says. “The audience is really loving the energy she brings. Lisa was such a staple, such a legendary voice in this area and I thought it would take listeners a few weeks to warm up to Meg. The reaction, though, has been one hundred percent positive. People love what she brings to the show.”
He continues: “We’re so lucky that Meg wanted to move over to this role. I don’t know many people who could make the transition as seamless for the audience, for me, working with this person for over twenty years and reset. It’s a little like starting over. But Meg has fit in perfectly. She has no ego and she’s willing to learn.”
Since the announcement of Meg joining Mike in the morning on AM800, she says her phone has been blowing up, her mother’s phone has been blowing up. After being away from Southwestern Ontario for a number of years, Meg says that she has a whole new appreciation for the area.
“Coming back to Windsor-Essex—it’s been great understanding how other cities work,” she says. “Experiencing other communities, their municipal politics, transportation issues, in Newfoundland and Toronto. Having lived that experience working with Council, different levels of government, allowed me to understand issues with more complexity.”
The human element was present from the beginning of Meg’s involvement with Mornings With Mike & Meg.
“You were so nervous!” Mike says, reminding Meg of her first show.
“I was—for many reasons,” Meg agrees. “Living in this community for so long I know the impact that Lisa Williams had, how the listeners treasured her, and I wondered how to fill those shoes. Radio is so personality driven. ‘Will listeners be receptive to who I am?’ I wondered. Once we got going, though, I felt better—that came from Mike, he was very supportive.”
“It was so cool to watch,” Mike says. “It brought me back to when I replaced Cam Gardiner. He and Lisa established what the show is, and I feel a real responsibility to keep that legacy going.”

BORDER CITY BRASS
Family and Friends Making Music to Make You Feel Alright
STORY BY KAREN TINSLEY / PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAY CORNWALL
BACK IN 2017, a group of family members and good friends gathered to jam in someone’s basement, when magic happened.
Part of that magic was the age range of the jammers: the youngest had just turned 18; the oldest was, shall we say, well into retirement.
“But the other part of the magic was how quickly our little pickup band jelled and what an incredible sound we made playing together!” recalls Fred Thomas, Border City Brass founder and one of the ‘elders’.
“Before you could say Border City Brass, we were a band. Our frontman extraordinaire Tom Brough has a lot of connections in the corporate world, so some of our first gigs were private parties.”
There’s a quote that’s been attributed to many, but it’s likely a safe
bet that it originated with an artist or musician: “If you must make art, you must find a way to pay for it.”
That’s why for decades, it’s more the rule than the exception for musicians to have ‘day jobs’: frontman Tom Brough is an entrepreneur and business owner, trombone player Tom LeClair is a paramedic, Jeff McAuley is a social worker, Jon Tayler works in the sports and leisure sector; drummer Rico is a retired Industrial Engineer. Bass player Mark Uttley is a retired firefighter and Fred himself is a retired paramedic. Connor Marcotte and Ian Thomas-Wright are both studying at St. Clair College.
Tom says, “It’s hard to put into words just how much we love making music together; it’s powerful stuff. When we perform,
Meet the Border City Brass brotherhood: Back row (l–r): Tom Brough (Frontman Extraordinaire), Connor Marcotte (Lead Guitar), Rico Vieceli (Percussion), Mark Uttley (Bass Guitar), Ian Thomas-Wright (Rhythm Guitar), John ‘English’ Tayler (keyboards, guitar, vocals). Front row (l–r): Tom ‘Tombone’ Leclair (Trombone, Percussion, Congas), Jeff ‘Triple Threat’ McAuley (Alto, Tenor and Baritone Saxophone), Fred ‘Fast Freddy’ Thomas (Trumpet, Tenor Saxophone).
there is an authentic vibe of belonging and being a part of something really special.”
Fred adds, “That sense of belonging and camaraderie really is a family affair for our band: Jon is my son-in-law, Ian is my grandson, and the rest of the guys are part of a close and longstanding brotherhood. And let me take this opportunity to give a big shout out to our wives, girlfriends and families…because without them, there would be no band.”
“Performing as a group involves a coordination of efforts that are linked to the release of pleasure-causing chemicals (known as endorphins) in our brains. In fact, I’ve called our group ‘The Endorphin Brothers’ on more than one occasion. Which probably explains why we get such joy from playing and singing together,” says Fred, who, as a retired healthcare professional, knows a thing or two about a thing or two.
If you know Windsor, you know that our music scene has a strong, well-developed social conscience. Essex County has always been able to count on the generosity of our community of local performers to enrich and support worthy causes, from Hospice to the homeless to hospitals to children in need.
‘Giving back’ is also associated with warm and positive feelings, which is why Border City Brass aims to create and forge a lasting legacy to make a difference.
“Live music events bring people together to support our community and provide platforms for emerging musicians; we’re committed to doing our part,” Fred promises.
If we’re talking about Windsor’s music scene, we must mention ‘the Big D’. While Detroit is considered a world-renowned music metropolis, its endless legacy of famous singers, bands and hit songs has not only left an indelible mark on that city, but also on the bustling border city directly south.
Windsor may not always register as a hot spot of musical talent and
yet, our live music scene is second-to-none, whether it’s funk, rock, soul, punk, alternative, jazz or blues. We may not be able to boast names like Aretha, Eminem and Linkin Park, but we do have our own versions of pop, rock and country heroes that have called Windsor home (or at least, their birthplace: Shania Twain, Jeff Burrows, Richie Hawtin, Dorothy Collins). All of them have left their mark, and all of them can trace their roots to our fair city.
For anyone born and raised here, Motown, Detroit’s rock radio and vibrant live concert venues are just a handful of the myriad musical influences that colour, shape and influence our world.
For Border City Brass, musical influences include The Blues Brothers (‘we have a special place in our hearts for this movie’, confides Jon), Chicago and the Powder Blues Band, to name a few.
Jon adds, “One of the real advantages of having a band the size of a baseball team is that if we want to tackle a big song by the E-Street Band or Tower of Power, we absolutely can. And we will!”
When Jon is asked what he’d like people to know about Border City Brass, he’s quick to answer: “We’re an upbeat, down-to-earth, friendly, confident band with a great big sound; the kind of sound you can feel. Our passion for playing is contagious! Whether you like to bust some moves on the dance floor, are more the clap-sing-and-sway in your seat type, or you just want to sit back and groove, we’re your band.”
At press time, Fred had just nailed down the details for a Border City Brass New Year’s Eve at the Windsor Sportsmen’s Club.
He adds, “We’ll be sending 2024 out with a bang from 2–6 pm, culminating with a traditional New Year’s Eve ball drop. Which means you can still stop in at that house party or be at home safe and warm well before the clock strikes 12. For revelers of a certain age, it’s the best of both worlds! Follow us on Facebook and Instagram, where the latest details on all upcoming Border City Brass performances and events can be found. Or email bordercitybrassband@gmail.com for more information. We can’t wait to play for you!” WLM

Scholarship supports UWindsor PhD student’s cancer research
Adam Pillon was in his nal year of a PhD in biomedical sciences when he and his wife welcomed their rst child.
Juggling the demands of advanced cancer research with the responsibilities of a new family brought its challenges, especially with a one-year-old at home. However, the $5,000 Gail Rosenblum Memorial Scholarship provided critical relief, allowing Pillon to balance his academic and family commitments.
“At the time, my wife was considering going back to work, but thanks to the scholarship, she was able to stay home for about six more months. at allowed me to focus on my research, and that’s when I nished my data collection and began writing my thesis,” Pillon recalled.
“One of the most challenging aspects of a graduate degree is focusing 24/7 on one project. You’re human, and when life happens, it helps not to have the nancial worry so many of us face during grad school.”
Pillon’s research examined key protein interactions in cell cycle regulation, focusing on how two proteins interact to cause rapid cell division a fundamental process in cancer development.
“ at’s important in cancer because when cells divide faster and more frequently, that’s how tumours form,” he explained. “My work focused on speci c pathways involving a particular protein, adding to our lab’s ongoing research into how these pathways drive cancer.”
Today, Pillon continues his research journey as a postdoctoral fellow in Dr. John Trant’s lab at the University of Windsor, serving as the lab’s resident molecular biologist.

Dazzling Aerial Acrobatic Laser Show Coming To Windsor CHRISTMAS IN SPACE
STORY BY MATTHEW ST. AMAND
PHOTOGRAPHY BY Q PRODUCTIONS LV
IT SHOULD BE no surprise that a total re-imagining of what a Christmas holiday show can be would originate with a man who has been a performer for most of his life.
Q Productions of Las Vegas, Nevada, headed by Fernando Quevedo, brings Christmas in Space! A Holiday Cirque Spectacular to Colosseum at Caesars Windsor on Saturday December 14th for an 8 p.m. show.
Christmas in Space! is an electrifying holiday spectacle that intertwines cosmic wonder with Yuletide magic, featuring a cast of extraordinary acrobats, daredevils, singers, dancers and cirque performers, that brings together cutting-edge technology with heart-stopping acts.
“The show took approximately a year and a half to put together,” Fernando explains. “We have more than a dozen world-class entertainers, all specialty performers in various disciplines: contortion, stunt, aerial. These people are the pinnacle in their field.”
Bringing together this group of elite performers was no easy feat—each of them is extremely sought after and committed to various tours traveling the world. Fernando managed to do it.
“The stars aligned for the cast we wanted,” Fernando continues, “who were on tour, had contracts and limited availability, especially during the holiday season. That was a challenge, but with some perseverance, we pulled it together.”
The concept for the show came quickly to Fernando.
“The premise is something that is dear to my heart,” he says. “Our show tells the story of an alien named Aldo who comes to Earth to abduct a tech nerd named Roswell. Roswell is jaded, a modern tech guru… You know, if Dickens were alive today, I think he would write Scrooge as a tech guy!”
Fernando goes on: “Roswell is jaded about Christmas, and it is from him that Aldo wants to learn about it. The other performers in the show are aliens who all think they know what the spirit of Christmas is, but really they do not.”
As a lifelong fan of science fiction, marrying a Christmas holiday theme with aliens came naturally to Fernando.
“I have always loved sci-fi,” he says, “whether it’s Star Wars, Alien, the eighties classic remake of The Thing, Starman… I’m a nerd at heart!”
Clockwise from above: Aerialists and dancers performing in Christmas in Space!; Aerialist and aerial choreographer Michael Radiff as Orion; Cuban juggler and hand balancing acrobat Danny Perez performing spinning cube routine.
A World of Good Wishes
Some of the marvels the audience will encounter in Christmas in Space! A Holiday Cirque Spectacular almost defy description. There is the Hair Hang Aerialist, who defies gravity as she performs suspended solely by her hair, demonstrating astonishing strength and artistry.
A troupe of alien trampoline aerialists, who perform a succession of acrobatics as they leap from a massive wall and bounce from the trampoline below.
The Saturn Aerial Sphere lifts four aerialists high above the stage where they perform a series of breathtaking acrobatics.
“It’s like ballet in the air,” Fernando says. “There is no net. We don’t use nets in our shows—the perils are real. We don’t use any CGI.”
He adds: “We also have a contortionist who comes from a planet where beings can rearrange their bodies and perform all sorts of ‘pretzel’ moves.”
Among the true highlights of this amazing show is the “laser bending.” Lady Light, known as “The Lasergirl” takes the show to the next level with her laser-bending demonstration. Her work has been featured on “Game of Talents” on Fox, on two episodes of The CW’s “The Big Stage,” Discovery TV’s “Outrageous Acts of Science” and MTV’s “Amazingness.”
The Lasergirl joins forces with the Photon Krew, which is a high-tech troupe of elite dancers who perform using state-ofthe-art light-up suits. Seeing them perform is like watching living coloured pen-andink illustrations move about the stage. The troupe energizes every audience with their otherworldly use of technology, music and dance.
“It is all new,” Fernando says. “Over the years, we’ve been making our home in Canada, bringing shows like Holiday Dreams and Christmas Rock Story.”
It was during a conversation with an agent who asked Fernando about Q Productions’ latest show that Christmas in Space! was born.
“There is a lot of pressure on creators and performers,” Fernando continues. “Audiences love our shows, they keep coming back whenever we come to town, and they a want to see something new and fresh. The agent said to me: ‘What have you got?’ And I said: ‘We’ve got Christmas in Space!’ Then all we had to do was create it!”
The machinations of putting together such a show soon ramped up, assembling the cast, conducting rehearsals, deciding which technology helped tell the story s

in the most eye-popping manner, and then marrying the technology with acrobatics. All in a day’s work.
“We have amazing coaches—among them our choreographer, Adolfo Barreto, who has had an amazing career, working specifically on the staging, like American Step Challenge,” Fernando says. “Michael Radiff is our acrobatics and aerial coach. He worked on the Saturn Aerial Sphere.”
Kelly Hamilton, Vice President and Creative Producer for Q Productions Las Vegas, is also Lady Light, a former dancer and award-winning laser programmer. She created the laser portion of the show, coaching and training the contortionists in the art of light-bending.
The venues where Christmas in Space! will be performed were specifically chosen because they have the space and modern facilities to manage this type of cutting edge show.
Performing is in Fernando’s blood. He was born in Argentina into a family of performers, spending the first years of his life in Europe. Fernando made his stage debut at the age of seven and by age nine, he had performed for American President Jimmy Carter. His family’s act, “Los Huincas Gauchos,” received such acclaim that they settled in Las Vegas—the crucible of the entertainment industry. As the expression goes: “If you can make it in Vegas, you can make it anywhere.” It was there that Fernando cultivated his talents as a performer, music composer, writer, and choreographer.
“We want people who come to the show to be wowed!” Fernando says. “But there is also another element we hope they take away—our love of the holidays and all that they mean: being with family, people coming together to experience something in common, to have a shared experience. Modern technology is a wonderful thing, but it has a way of separating people, allowing us to exist in our own little worlds. Theater is a great excuse to make new memories.”

A GLIMPSE INSIDE THE HMCS HARRY DEWOLF
Canada’s Naval Power in Windsor
STORY BY PAULA JUST / PHOTOGRAPHY BY MICHAEL PIETRANGELO
WINDSORITES WERE THE last to bid farewell to the ship of the Royal Canadian Navy after its journey through the Welland Canal. The HMCS Harry DeWolf stopped in cities across Ontario and opened its doors for public tours. Besides Windsor, the vessel visited Kingston, Toronto, and Hamilton.
“When people visit us, they can see different parts of the ship, like the bridge, the weapon systems, our main cafeteria, and meeting areas. They can also talk to sailors about their experiences. This awareness helps bring education to Canadians,” explained Lieutenant Commander and Executive Officer, Lisa Jensen, who is also a University of Windsor graduate.
This type of naval unit was developed to assist the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) in monitoring and protecting the country’s exclusive economic zone, particularly in the Northwest Passage. Canada has the longest coastline in the world, bordered by three oceans, and the advanced surveillance capabilities ensure the RCN can keep a close watch over these strategic and often remote areas. The vessel was named to honor Harry DeWolf, a Canadian naval hero from World War II. This marks the first

time in the Navy’s over 100-year history that a class has been named after a prominent Canadian naval figure.
When the warship docked in the Dieppe Gardens, Windsor Life Magazine took an exclusive tour after a ceremony was held to welcome the Navy. Don’t be fooled by the photos; it looks compact, but it is enormous. The vessel is 6,660 tonnes, with a length of 103 meters and a beam of 19 meters. It reaches a top speed of 17 knots (31 km/h) and has an impressive range of up to 6,800 nautical miles. The ship, which has seven floors and dozens of narrow stairways, accommodates a crew of 85 people, who sleep, eat and live aboard for months. The team has access to a kitchen, gym, living quarters, lounge and even a small hospital equipped for emergencies and minor surgeries. Curious fact: the corridors are all white but lit with red lights, as red lighting enhances sailors’ visibility day and night.
The warship is also equipped to conduct armed patrols and surveillance, support humanitarian assistance efforts, respond to emergencies and provide disaster relief. Rescue boats and a maritime helicopter are carried on board to assist in various missions. The weapon system, armed with three machine guns, is highly accurate due to its advanced targeting and surveillance system. “We are capable of year-round operations in the Arctic, able to protect Canada’s sovereignty and interests at home. We can also patrol overseas and down South as well,” said Jensen. After the Windsor public visits, the cruiser will prepare for a counter-narcotics mission in the Caribbean.
The arrival in Windsor also marked the return of some sailors to their hometown. Blake Blanchard, Sailor 1st Class and Cook on the HMCS Harry DeWolf, is 23 years old and originally from Windsor. Taking part in the Welland Canal expedition was a special moment for him. “The biggest thing was just being able to come home to Windsor; that was huge for me. I never thought I’d ever sail to my hometown.” Blanchard is part of a specialized team dedicated to meal preparation. “The biggest challenge is cooking every day, all day long. Every day, I’m doing breakfast, lunch and dinner, nonstop. But the best part is that I didn’t know how to cook before. And since I joined the Navy, I’ve really learned how to cook. Now, I make amazing meals and love cooking for myself, my family and my friends. It’s gratifying,” he said.
This feeling of returning home also s
touched James Van Vessem, Sailor 1st Class and Naval Combat Information Operator. Van Vessem currently lives in Halifax but grew up in Windsor, where he studied until graduation. With the visit, he was able to welcome his mother-in-law aboard. “The most significant part of this mission would be being present among the people, the family, the communities and everyone else involved. I feel like I’m part of that, and being recognized in my hometown is of great importance to me,” he shared.
It was years ago, in the same spot where the Harry DeWolf was docked, that Van Vessem felt inspired to join the Navy. “I was passing by and saw the Canadian Coast Guard ship. I was really fascinated with the very intricate and technical pieces of equipment that they had on the top of their mast, spinning around the radar systems. And then, I was able to take Remote Sensing and Geographical Information Systems at the university, which then solidified my knowledge and interest in military equipment.” When asked what he enjoys most about his role as a sailor, he replied with humor: “I enjoy that my commute to work is just five minutes up the stairs, and I get to travel to places like Boston, New York, all the way up to the Northern Waters, and all with friends from my hometown,” he said.
The Royal Canadian Navy also plays a crucial role in shaping the skills and character of young adults, offering experiences that build resilience, teamwork, and leadership. Blanchard recommends: “If you’re not sure what you want to do with your education or don’t know what to work, the Navy is a great way. Especially the Reserve, which is excellent because you can work part-time while you’re in school. You get guaranteed full-time employment, make great money, and get experience. It can’t go wrong with that at all,” he says.
During the Windsor stop, locals got a glimpse of life on board and saw the inside of one of RCN’s most essential fleet vessels. Families, students, and veterans alike gathered to learn about the ship’s mission and the work of its crew. It’s this kind of connection with communities that the Navy seeks to promote through public tours. “Our point is to bring the Canadian Navy to the people of Ontario; we want people to understand what the Navy does and what their options are if they’re interested in a career. We want people to know that Canada does have a Navy and this is what we do for our people,” concluded Jensen.
