Brunello di Montalcino

Montalcino, Tuscany, Italy 2018
A quintessential Tuscan mixed agricultural estate, Tenuta di Sesta stretches over some 200ha of rolling terrain in which 30ha of vineyards are interspersed with olive groves and grain fields.
The estate has been run since the 1990s by Giovanni Ciacci, who was recently joined by his children Andrea and Francesca, and between them they have settled on a recipe that mixes traditional winemaking (large oak botti) with the latest viticultural ideas.
“A proper, classically styled and proportioned Brunello, with lovely fine tannic structure and fine fruit,” the judges said. “Still young, and very much a treat for years to come.”

Cà dei Maghi Amarone della Valpolicella Classico
Valpolicella, Veneto, Italy 2017
Cà dei Maghi are no strangers to success in this competition, with numerous Top 100 placements over the years.
This year’s contribution from the still-risingstar Veneto estate is what the judges called a “luxuriously lovely” example of Amarone.
A classic blend of Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella and Molinara sourced from an alluvial/limestone vineyard, the grapes go through a three-month drying period and the wine is aged for 36 months in barrique.
“It is of course a big wine, with lots of cooked fruit and brambly juiciness, sweet spice and oak, but it carries itself with amazing balance and elegance, and great acidity.”
