Connection is paramount to our success in Wines Direct. We talk a lot about the relationships we build with our winemakers, their families and their land. Perhaps we forgot to fill you in on the efforts we make to connect with our customers once the wines have landed here in Ireland. Many moons ago, our founder Paddy – with absolutely no background in retail – decided that he wanted to expand the business into the direct-to-consumer sector. For him, it was another opportunity to talk about the wines and winemakers of his travels. However, talking is all he’d do if Gareth & Gavin didn’t step in. Our first retail adventure started in Mullingar in 2007 and has grown from strength to strength. We’ve spent the best part of two decades forging unbreakable connections with our regular customers in Mullingar. We celebrate all walks of life with them: weddings, anniversaries, birthdays and, of course, Christmas.

Our team in Mullingar are knowledgeable beyond measure. While we have many WSET trained members of staff, all of them are Wines Direct trained meaning nattering about our wines and winemakers is their most impressive skill. In 2023 we decided to take our Mullingar model and transport it to Athlone. The Athlone shop is the physical embodiment of our new branding – but our ethos remains the same. Our staff in Athlone learn from the best and as the years go on, the connections built there will be as powerful as the ones we have in Mullingar. Is 2024 the year for retail adventure number three?
