The new role of a library is to provide public experience. In an era where most knowledge and information can be received from devices connected to the internet in an enclosed room, what would be the role of a library in a city? Knowledge in the form of books & documents may be of secondary importance- instead, the provision of a comfortable and open environment that invites all walks of life to spend time in one common space can be a more important role of a contemporary library. The new library constitutes itselft as a horizontal volume that aligns with the height of the surrounding buildings. It does not impose but invites: the library facilities and spaces reserved for the community center are distributed over two floors, separated by an open, non-obstructed space/void at ground level. A diagonal passageway disects the building at ground level, serving as two entry points on either side allowing pedestrians to pass through, observe, inform, make a stop at the newspaper stands without having to access the main facilities. This ‘bridge’ draws visitors in from two sides creating a zone inside from where the building unfolds: like the icons of an iPad, all program elements are immediately visible facilitating an instant understanding of the building. //

Mt. Capella
Urban Regeneration in Rotterdam East with j. tjong and m. ando location capella, the netherlands programme urban planning and housing proposal for 360 apartments time 04/2011 - 06/2011 status conceptual design
Mt. Capella is a project targeting the reactivation of a stagnant neighbourhood created by generic and problematic post-war slab blocks in Capella aan den Ijssel, Netherlands. Fulfilling the required density, these modernist slab blocks manage to stack inhabitants vertically, freeing up the ground floor to provide open public spaces and parking. However, various factors such as the mis-orientation of housing entrances, introduction of ground floor garages and huge parking areas consequently render the intended public spaces as empty spaces. Residents are generally not engaged in these communal green spaces thus resulting in poor or no sense of community. Moreover, the slab-block organisation imposed subject the site to a connectivity drought. By carefully scruntinising existing networks and potential major spots, Mt. Capella will transform the site into a connector of the neighbourhood. It will be a piece of open landscape that promotes active engagement of public spaces. // site w with 12 slab blockks enjoys a central location nearr the city centre but ssuffers from a con nnectivity drou ught
celeebrating central locaation by reestaablishing direct con nnections with major spots resulting in new plott divisions
thesee wellconn nected plots will be developed into a resid dential area for 360 housing units. It is aalso a piece of communal green landsscape.
