Water Memories ”( ; )” For Violin, tape, live electronics and light.
This piece was created thanks to the National Fund for Culture and Arts (Fonca, Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes).
Wingel Gilberto Pérez Mendoza (2015)
Page Instructions: - Microphone: A Piezoelectric microphone is placed in the bridge of the Violin, therefore, the microphone will get the vibrations of the instrument. -
About the electronic part:
Either the composer or a technician may perform the electronics using a nanoKONTROL2 mixer connected via USB to a computer running Supercollider. To monitor the electronic output, the computer screen must be visible to the composer/ technician. Every parameter control in the nanoKontrol2 has its own staff, in which you have different lines that indicates if the parameter goes up or goes down, and also the value of the parameter is showed in Supercollider post window.

In the score the parameters are notated as I show in the next graphic:
The different tapes and effects are triggered in a supercollider window (when the piece starts the effects must be “running”), in which it says Eff 1, Eff 2, Audio 1, Audio 2 … and so on. In addition, the values of the Effects are showed in the supercollider post Window. Also, the tapes are indicated in the score with a number, as a consequence, the composer/ technician knows when to trigger the tape, the number of the tape is the same that is showed in supercollider windows:
-
About the Light:
The perfomer needs to have a white light above him or her. This is going to be the unique light during the whole piece. The light is controled in three different parameters, 1.- Turn On, 2. – Turn off and 3.- the transition between on and off. Also, in the score is indicated the different parameters of the ligth with one staff, as I show in the next graphic:
-
About the score and Violin parts:
The actions of temporal aspects of the performer can be read in two different ways, the first one is an action that the time last in seconds:
Or with time signature and metronomic time and the interaction of both ways:
-
About Violin part:
In the first part there are 2 instructions how to play the Violin, the first one is that there is not G clef, instead you have the Violin fingerboard part, in combination with the second symbol, the hand, that means that you need to slide your fingers between the top nut and the end of the violin fingerboard.
In addition, in the first part there is a combination between slide fingering and vertical bowing. Vertical bowing means to play the bow up and down but in a Vertical way, the result is a low saturation of noise without pitch.
-
Battimento:
= means Unison.
= quasi unisono, means that the vibration for the 2 strings produces a little battimento between them (almost the same frequency).
= Medium battimento, between quasi unisono and almost a quarter tone.
= Almost quarter tone battimento, the batimento is almost a quarter tone distance but without reaching this one.
-
Percussion sounds:
Percussion shoulder bridge sound:
When the staff has one line and the note head is a cross means that you need to hit the shoulder of the bridge with the screw of the bow.
-
Highest note:
Play the highest note in the D, A or E string, so high that you almost touch the hair of the bow with your finger.
-
Abbreviations: o c. l. b. = con legno battuto. o + = pizz. with the left hand.
-
Pressure of the bow: Higher line: A little pressure of the bow, diffused sound with a little noise.
Middle line: Normal pressure of the bow.
Lowe line: A completely distorted sound because a lot pressure of the bow. The bowing should be irregular to make the sound discontinues.
-
Finger pressure:
= Harmonic pressure finger.
= Between Harmonic pressure finger and normal pressure of the finger.
= Normal pressure of the finger.
In rehearsal mark “M, the performer has different options to play the passage, every musical moment is squared and numbered, therefore, you have 4 different musical moments. Every musical moment is going to be played twice. The performer is going to choose only one option that the composer suggest, the options are the next ones: 3 4 1 2 First option 2 1 4 3 Second option 4 3 2 1 Third option 1 2 3 4 Fourth option - Technical considerations: To perform the piece you will need a computer with Supercollider 3.6.5 running, the code will be provided by the composer. In addition you will need a stereo sound card, depending of the computer could be USB or firmware. Also, you will need a Piezoelectric microphone provided by the composer), that will be connected to the sound card device, the sound card will be connected to a mixer and finally 2 speakers will be connected to the main mixer.
