STUGAN BY GARVSTROM Born from the desire to create sustainable objects Beatrice and Jake design wooden pieces that belong in your home

Photography: Hannah McCawley

Tell us a bit about Stugan by Garvstrom. Jake and I design and make sustainable wooden pieces that belongs in your home. Tell us about yourself and your background? We both grew up near the nature with families interested in craftsmanship and design, but we grew up on two different sides of the world. In 2010 Beatrice in her late teens left Sweden to backpack in Australia, after a few month traveling around I ended up in a little country town six hours west from Brisbane meeting Jake. He was rebuilding a small school with a couple of other carpenters. We ended up spending Christmas together and Jake showed me amazing places you only would know about if you were born and bred in Queensland. From there we bought a renovation project, our puppy dogs and got married. The spark of creating, which has always been there, but has evolved when we came together. I started to study interior design and Jake studied wilderness reserves and wildlife and the nature of sustainable design and creation has always influenced our direction and driven us to become Stugan By Garvstrom. What sparked you to create your business? The thrive to make and create objects have always been there and to be able to create a lifestyle with our ideas and abilities is an ongoing goal we are working toward. Stugan by Garvstrom simply started with a thought of making a keyring, with all natural material and with a shape that allows you to hang it up. We started to play around - I sketched, while Jake was working in the shed trying to perfect

what was on the drawings. We became the designer and the refiner. What processes are involved in creating your pieces? It all starts with ideas on paper, which is often me doodling and sketching. Jake is the refiner and works out how we will be able to make it. We refine the idea and Jake goes out to the workshop and make a prototype, there on we both tweak it till it comes perfect in our mind. The whole process can vary in time with

some of the items we worked on taking some months. It sounds easy to catogorise what we do in the business but to be honest we are a little bit of everything. I can be in the workshop for days and turn out products while Jake is working on new designs. We love to be able to do everything and we more than often sing “Anything you can do I can do better, this encourages us and drives us to do better with a smile on our face. continued on next page >

< continued from previous page What inspires you in your designs? The environment and nature means a lot for both of us. To feel connected and relaxed out in rainforest or sit and watch cows in a paddock always seems to re-energize and inspire. We want to make beautiful things that we would love to have in our own home. Keeping it simple and not over complicated, let the materials speak for themself. What do you love the most about having your own label? The ability of doing and making everything we would like, what we do is what we are. There is no middle handling that we don’t know about. From working in big businesses and always having people pulling you in different directions we find it more encouraging to do everything ourselves and make it our lifestyle. Even if we are working weekends, nights and have trouble sleeping sometimes, we find it relieving to only be able to blame ourselves if something went wrong or give us a big pat on the back when we succeed. Who are some of your favourite designers? Hans Wegner Jacobsen and Alvar Aalto the beauty of simple and organic design which never seems to get outdated, they have created some beautiful pieces in their lifetime. With saying that their is some amazing young designers out there with great sustainable principles. What is your favourite item in your store right now and why? We have such a small range that been carefully refined so we like everything, it’s a nice balance between the products and you could easily have all of them at home. Jake would have to say the shelf but only because of the revelation of how it eventuated and how adamant I was thinking it would actually work. But with only a few hours of refining it

Photography: Hannah McCawley

did work and has become one of our most successful items. What has been your biggest highlight? We started this business at the beginning of this year and alredy have stores stocking our products. Getting lovely comments is a major highlight. Another highlight is that we have had the ability to meet other like minded and inspirational people.

What are your plans for the future? We have some exciting future plans going ahead soon, but in the grand scheme we are hoping to be able to combine both Sweden and Australia. We would love to be able to expand and work with both countries materials and get inspiration from both side of the world.

PAPER EMPIRE Therese O’Donoghue and artist husband, Stefan Gevers, showcase a curation of limited edition artworks with a diversity of work

Photography: Reuben Gates Styling: Bek Sheppard Stylist

Tell us a bit about Paper Empire Australia. I started the business in late 2013 to further promote the work of my husband, Stefan Gevers, and other artists we admired who were looking for a platform outside of the traditional gallery model. Stefan had been exhibiting work locally and internationally for 20 years but wanted to be able to make more work and different work than the gallery scene wanted. So we created the concept of Paper Empire Australia. We focus on limited edition prints, non edition prints, cards and art products to meet a rapidly increasing interest in artwork. I knew from previous experience I wanted a diversity of work, so along side Stefan’s watercolours, we started to represent several artists from Europe including Studio Snowpuppe, Whatwedo, Monika Petersen, A Mile in the Woods, Sofie Boersting, Michelle Carlsland. Their styles are all very different, but we see them as leaders in their medium and several are award winning and internationally commissioned artists. Tell us about yourself and your background? I studied gold and silversmithing straight from school, but after graduation and working in the industry I knew sitting behind the bench wasn’t for me! A post grad in Arts and entertainment management inspired the idea of managing artists, but it took many years to refine the concept of Paper Empire. The time in between was spent living overseas in The Netherlands while Stefan finished his Maters in Painting and Sculpture. After returning to Australia in 2000, we had two daughters and later I began work as an agent for several leading creative businesses. Stefan has worked as a textile designer in

“The idea is to always have a collectable series that sits well as a set or just as strongly in one major piece.” Australia and Holland up until he started his own business in 2009, teaching and painting. What sparked you to create your business? Working as an agent for seven years and meeting incredible retailers, interior designers and corporate clients lead me to realise that a business like ours had potential to meet a need

for original and authentic art made by talented and experienced artists. The idea of offering limited editions was to enable wide access to beautiful artwork without the hefty price tag of an original and then we broadened this idea to art prints from a range of designers so that our collection would be diverse, and always interesting. continued on next page >

< continued from previous page What processes are involved in creating your pieces? With Stefan’s watercolour work, there is always a series in mind - flora, fauna, abstracts etc The idea is to always have a collectable series that sits well as a set or just as strongly in one major piece. The work of the artists we represent has involved commissioning of original work, as well as representing works already in the market, but not previously represented in Australia. Our selection process for new work is based around the unique style of work and its place within our current ranges. We make nearly all the artist prints here in Melbourne which is very important to us. What inspires you in your designs? Initially Stefan’s Fauna series of Australian birds was a work of personal love for Australian nature, but we decided to treat the concept as a contemporary portrait, where each bird took on its own personality, and there was plenty of white space to allow this ‘personality’ to shine. The abstract watercolours are again born from nature- landscapes, waterways, road trips where colours change constantly. Allowing that balance of colour, refined lines or even total white space to balance the work is such a skill. We personally opt for work that has that balance in play. Where ‘quiet’ elements are given their moment and not overdone.

Photography: Reuben Gates Styling: Bek Sheppard Stylist

“The abstract watercolours are again born from nature- landscapes, waterways, road trips where colours change constantly.”

What do you love the most about having your own label? EVERYTHING! I love working with the artists, meeting the clients. Coming up with new ranges etc. We’ve just oved into a new studio space in Kensington which is full of natural light and a great space for meeting other creative and putting our ranges together. It works a showroom, office and teaching space for Stefans watercolour classes. Who are some of your favourite designers? We of course love all the artists we represent for their aesthetic and innovation. In the retail sphere it would be brands like Hay and Ferm Living for their stylish Scandi designs, Tait Furniture for their design work and clever collaborations. In the art world we love Ari Athans and John Wolsely. What is your favourite item in your store right now and why? I think its always the latest release which is the Ivy watercolour – we just had it printed in a massive A1 size- it has incredible detail and is so relaxing to look at.

What has been your biggest highlight? We’ve attended several major trade fairs including DEN FAIR, where leading designers and architects etc have come by and introduced themselves! That’s a thrill to be noticed and have your work chosen by design heros. But sometimes its the small contact – the comment on an instagram post, the feedback from a customer that really makes your day. What are your plans for the future? We will launch 1-2 more artists by the end of this year and plan to launch more products of our own design including wall hooks using Stefan’s designs. In 2016 more artwork of course - Always more artwork to come! Is there anything else you would like to tell us about your business? What we are most proud of is our diversity and that our collections can appeal across the board. We respond to trends but we certainly don’t feel obliged to follow them and want to encourage our audience to do the same. Some artwork is timeless and some is perfect for a period of time, but you should always buy from your heart. CONTACT: paperempire.com.au

SODA + STITCH Textile designer, Jemma Bell’s brand new debut collection of kids bedding is a stunning display of colour and playful design

Photography: Phoebe Bell from Sage & Clare

Tell us a bit about Soda + Stitch Soda + Stitch is all about hand printed textiles, we just can’t get enough… Firstly we have a range of block printed fabrics that are available by the metre - great for those sew-savvy people. For those not so crafty folk, we offer a ‘make me’ service where all our textiles can be sewn into custom products just for you and your home. We can also print existing designs in different colours or on different base materials. And if you’re feeling really adventurous, Soda + Stitch can create a whole new design that becomes yours and only yours! And secondly we have just launched our ‘debut’

collection of kids bedding, baby blankets, snuggly cushions and other nursery textiles. Tell us about yourself and your background? Well, where do I start? I’m a graphic and textile designer and I have a serious addiction to all things textile related. I’m a lover of food and I’d call myself a bit of a globetrotter too. After living in London and Rotterdam, I now find myself living somewhere completely unexpected - India! In the lovely, bustling city of Jaipur. It was a rather spontaneous move after meeting my partner in crime - Paul, a fellow Aussie, who runs

Photography: Phoebe Bell from Sage & Clare

a Hot Air Balloon here in India. It didn’t take us long to realise we got along like a house on fire and so I made the big move mid-last year. What sparked you to create your business? Lucky for me, Jaipur is the textile hub of India. It has an amazing artisan culture and is full to the brim with incredible hand techniques - block printing, indigo dying, embroidery, the list goes on! And so to create my own little brand felt like a rather natural progression - the ideas wouldn’t stop swirling around in my head. I slowly began to find artisans, printing masters and suppliers. Not long after, Soda + Stitch was born.

Photography:

“I’m a big fan of geometrics, but geometrics that aren’t perfect and I love hand drawn patterns.” What processes are involved in creating your pieces? It all begins with pencil and paper. I sketch, draw and mark make until have a few elements I like the look of. Then it’s time for a bit of technology - the little sketches get scanned into the computer where I can really explore repeats and colours. But things really get exciting when I pass the designs over to our block printing gurus… Each block is hand carved from soft teak wood, each colour mixed by the careful eyes of our colour masters and each metre painstakingly printed layer by layer. I’d say Soda + Stitch definitely shake off the norms of block printing, embracing the little nuances in texture and colour that make hand printing so addictive.

What inspires you in your designs? It’s the little things… It could be a bit of embroidery on a piece of vintage fabric here in Jaipur or small details on old vintage posters. I’m a big fan of geometrics, but geometrics that aren’t perfect and I love hand drawn patterns. I really like to find little marks that come from sketching and playing around that can be altered and transformed in some way. What do you love the most about having your own label? The freedom…! And the fulfilment of knowing your hard work is going towards your future however you decide

to paint the picture or finish the story! There is definitely something empowering about standing back and saying to yourself ‘I did this!’ Who are some of your favourite designers? Ohhh, I’ve got say my sister’s lovely brand ‘Sage x Clare’. And my Dad’s creations over at ‘Twiggargerie’. Otherwise I’m a big fan of Beci Orpin (who isn’t?), Ashley Goldberg (absolute genius) and Oyyo (more or less everything they do is on my wishlist). continued on next page >

What is your favourite item in your store right now and why? Tough! That’s like picking a favourite child, but I would have to say the Aeroplane Jelly Quilt Cover - it’s playful and totally nostalgic, it just reminds me of childhood! What has been your biggest highlight? Soda + Stitch has been incredibly fortunate in our launch and the very positive response

that’s come with it! That alone is the biggest of highlights… Just knowing there are people out there that feel drawn to our textiles and like what we’re creating. What are your plans for the future? I’d just love the future to hold more of what’s happening now - creativity, discovery of hand techniques and the ability to work with some amazing block printers and sewing masters! CORNER BLOCK STUDIO Product and Industrial designer, Natalie Lane handcrafts her minimalist book frames using carefully selected recycled wood giving an individual appeal to each piece Tell us a bit about Corner Block Studio? Corner Block Studio is a creative studio and workshop born in sunny Brisbane. My debut product is the Anesbury Book Frame; a clever, minimalist frame for displaying books, open on your wall. This spring I’ll be adding to my range of home wares and gifts that are unique, made with care and use materials that respect our environment and all things wild. Tell us about yourself and your background? If you couldn’t tell from the book frame, I’m fond of reading. Hiking in the bush or paddling in a canoe are my favourite ways to spend a weekend. I grew up drawing and enjoying handcrafts, thanks to my parents and Nan. I

‘ “woooaaaahhhhh” was a brilliant reaction from a dude at the markets when he saw my Anesbury Book Frames.’ studied Product Design at university and worked as an Industrial Designer before starting my own business this year. Brisbane has always been home and I am looking forward to another warm, humid summer. What sparked you to create your business? I always have an urge to make things by hand and to turn idea’s into tangible objects. In 2014, I set out to do more of what I was drawn to, and so begun sketching and prototyping on weekends and evenings. When my first product was fully formed, and my workshop was ready, I stepped away from my full time job and founded Corner Block Studio. It’s kind of what I’ve always pictured myself doing. What processes are involved in creating your pieces? I develop the designs in my thoughts, sketchbook and workshop; prototyping, testing and refining them. After carefully sourcing and selecting recycled timber, every frame is hand crafted (by yours truly) using both hand tools and power tools. The cotton cord is threaded through and knotted off by hand to finish. I enjoy being around the beautiful timber with blues music playing in the background. What inspires you in your designs? Gift giving inspires me, I often create the first version of a new design as a gift for a friend or family and it grows from there. My colour pallet and choice of materials is influenced by my admiration for Australian bushland. The function of the product takes lead when developing a new design, and the aim is to create something that is simple to use and timeless. What do you love the most about having your own label? Having the freedom to pursue my own ideas and to follow my personal values. I can choose to work with materials, people and companies who I believe are doing the right thing by one another and by the environment.

Photography: Michelle Takes Photos.

What do you consider to be a must have item in your home? Fresh coffee and an espresso maker. What do you foresee as the next big trend? Fresh cut flowers, in the home and everywhere. They’re a little traditional mixed with a lot of joyful. What has been your biggest highlight? “woooaaaahhhhh” was a brilliant reaction from a dude at the markets when he saw my Anesbury Book Frames. It’s a thrill to get enthusiastic feedback that people get the concept, dig the

design and want one in their home. For me, the development process is a mostly private affair; a lot of love and time get’s pored into it. To then share my work publicly and have people appreciate it, that’s been a highlight. What are your plans for the future? In time, I hope to welcome other staff into Corner Block Studio and develop collaborative projects with other designers, writers, artist and all. Generally, to be healthy, jolly and in kind company. WORKS TO LIVE FOR Graphic designers, Lizzie Deller and Pip Castle’s passion for collecting art and pretty things forged the beginnings of their accessible range of artworks

Works To Live By founders Lizzie Deller, left, and Pip Castle, right.

Photography: Sarah Anderson Styling: Works To Live By

A bit about how Works To Live By was formed? Our backgrounds are both in graphic design, and we have worked together since the midNoughties. Over the years we developed a really easy working style, finding we agree on most things, though more importantly disagreed just enough! Our different ways of working really compliment each other, my more methodic and pragmatic approach is balanced with Pip’s more free-thinking creativity. After styling many photoshoots together for clients, and loving it, we decided we needed to figure out a way of doing it more often! The idea grew to include Pip’s love of finding and collecting art, and our mutual interest in sourcing pretty things. Works To Live By combines the world of art and interiors, offering for sale original artworks, archival quality reproductions and coordinated homewares. As the concept developed, we knew we wanted to use the platform to support local artists in a way that is both accessible and affordable, and suits both collector and home decorator. Tell us about the team behind WTLB? Pip was born into a creative family, with her mum a painter and collector of various artworks and antiques. Her childhood weekends were spent being dragged through Melbourne art galleries, climbing trees and playing with a vast array of pets. Growing up surrounded by art from Arthur Boyd, Charles Wheeler and Hilary Jackman certainly served as inspiration (and

sometimes paid for school tuition!). After being accepted into interior design, Pip ultimately established a career in graphic design, all the while beginning her own collection of treasured artworks. Creative expression revealed itself in varied ways within my family. Quilting, craft and sign-writing among them. I was drawn to art while studying at school, pursing on a degree in graphic design at university. Graphic design as a creative field appealed because of its constrained nature, and the clarity of purpose a brief provides as opposed to the overwhelming possibilities of art. How do you select the right artist for your collection? What are you looking for? Initially, being visual people, we are drawn to the aesthetics. We then make contact with the artist and start a dialogue and collaboration, giving us an insight into their artistic practice. The format of WTLB is designed to put a face to the featured works, and give the art consumer a much deeper understanding of the works they’re purchasing by getting to know the creator, and their motivations. Do you have a favourite piece in your collection?

You can’t make us choose, it’s like choosing a favourite amongst our children! Do you have any tips on how to choice the right piece for your home? Forget trends. They come and go. Buy a piece because you love it. If you love it now, if it speaks to you on some level, then you will always have this connection, whether it’s on trend or not. Who are your favourite artists at the moment? Esther Stewart does amazing things with colour and shape, and I would cover my walls happily from floor to ceiling with her work if I could. (She is on our WTLB hit-list, but I’m too scared of the possible rejection!) Rachel Castle has spirit and talent for days. A few years back, Pip bought a large print for our office, and ever since I have been repeatedly asking her to sell to me, with no luck (yet!) Ebony Truscott, whose work I just recently came upon, paints the most beautiful, modern interpretation of still life. They are just stunning. What has been WTLB biggest highlight? We’re still only new, so getting the thing off the ground after months of planning felt fantastic! We have had a great response to the format (curating homewares around the artwork, and throwing a spotlight on the artist) and this has been heartening to know that the format we believe in resonates with others. Do you have anything new in store for WTLB? We feature a new artist each season, so we are currently collaborating with our Summer, 2016 artist to building their collection and devise an interior setting. It is at the fun, early stages of planning where anything is possible, and the hard work is yet to kick in! Stay tuned… continued on next page >

HEIDI MCKINNON Heidi McKinnon (Spring, 2015) is a woman after our own hearts! She shares a background in graphic design, like Pip and I, and it was most certainly this obvious graphic influence that drew us to her work. The scattering of irregular shapes dancing across the canvas, their crisp lines and bright colours are effervescent.

A stunning framed artwork, ‘Salt’ is the lightest of the series, with a delicate stone hue sprinkled with pops of colour. Blues, greens, oranges and pinks are peppered across a calm, neutral backdrop and bordered with solid timber frame.

SAI-WAI FOO Sai-Wai Foo (Summer, 2015) is a woman bursting with creativity, and you can see this in the 3-dimensional sculpture paper works she created for us. The detail and skill involved is astonishing. Her love of kitchenalia and vintage china inspired her collection, based on the iconic Willow Pattern.

NICE DIGS Textile designer, Georgia Havekotte has created a unique and contemporary range of dog products that will compliment any home

Photography: Corey Wright coreywright.com.au

Tell us a bit about Nice Digs Nice Digs offer high quality lifestyle goods for the discerning modern dog owner. Our philosophy is to combine durability and contemporary design that compliment the home, offering unique dog products with a strong commitment to hand crafted goods. Nice Digs beds are proudly designed, printed and made in Melbourne. Our beds are made of easy-care, dog friendly fabric that has a soft, cosy touch yet is hard wearing and durable. Evolving with the seasons, we offer unique products that are inspired by current trends. Every print is a NICE DIGS exclusive. We also offer a range of luxury dog collars and leashes that are made from the highest quality leather so your pooch will look great while being super comfortable. Tell us about yourself and your background? I’m a Fashion and Textile designer by trade but I’ve always wanted to build something for myself. After graduating with a bachelor in Fashion Design at RMIT, I did a few stints over in Europe, interning and training further before returning to Melbourne. Over the past few years I’ve worked for numerous Australian fashion brands focusing on print and textile design.

Founder of Nice Digs, Georgie Havekotte. Photography: Corey Wright. What sparked you to create your business? After meeting a rescue dog called Checkers through an online shelter and rescue pet directory, it was love at first sight. I struggled to find dog products that fit with my personal aesthetic and suited our home hence the birth of Nice Digs. Checkers now sits proudly beside me as the Assistant Creative Director and an obvious muse to the brand. What processes are involved in creating your pieces? I design from my home studio and I always have

Checkers at my feet. Usually I have most of my ideas at night, as I’m getting ready to fall asleep. I’ll marinate on them for a while and start playing with designs and patterns and just see what sticks. I strive for simple, contemporary design but above all else, it must be practical. Once our designs are confirmed, our fabric is printed locally and then our local production team will start manufacturing. What inspires you in your designs? I’m a very visual person so I gravitate toward strong patterns, colour and repetition. My love of fashion and textiles will always be a driving force in my designs and of course, my dog Checkers inspires me to create cool things that she likes and I do too. What do you love the most about having your own label? Creating products that make living with pets easier and more attractive is my mission. I love how creative I can be within the field and there are some many fun and inspiring dog lovers out there to share it with. Also seeing our products with our furry customers is always a thrill! I’ll never get bored of receiving our customers’ submissions. They’re just so bloody cute! Although sometimes challenging, overall it has been such a rewarding experience to build Nice Digs from the ground up and it’s exciting to watch it grow. continued on next page >

< continued from previous page What is your favourite item in your store right now and why? I’m very proud of our entire bed range! They’re just so comfortable with their lush supportive cushion inside and luxurious covers made of soft, easy care fabric. Of course I love them all but if I had to choose one of the designs, it would have to be our Harlesequin bed. What has been your biggest highlight? We actually launched our brand through a Pozible crowd-funding campaign, where you could pre-order our products for the first time. It was so exciting watching our sales grow and hitting our target well before the closing date so we knew we were onto a good thing.

What are your plans for the future? We’ll be at the upcoming Rose Street Artists Market in the coming months. We’ll have our entire debut range on offer plus a few new goodies to share. Pop down and say hello! We’ll be sure to find the perfect set up for your furry little dude. We also have some very exciting collaborations and retail pop ups planned in the near future so keep your eyes peeled! Is there anything else you would like to tell us about your business? Photography: Megan Morton

Tell us a bit about your business? Toucan is a brand created by two sisters, Renee and Natalie, who have a love of family, children’s décor and everything bright and beautiful. The girls believe passionately in creating vibrant and colorful environments. All Toucan prints and products are dreamed up and brought to life by the sisterly duo, or are thoughtfully sourced with little hearts in mind. Renee and Natalie reside in Sydney- Australia, where Toucan was created in 2014. From humble home beginnings, Toucan has grown rapidly, and the girls moved their business to its own studio in 2015. Toucan is 100% Australian owned and designed. Tell us about yourself and your background? Renee has a background in childcare, which holds her in good stead to understand the needs of developing minds. She recently left this field to focus on Toucan- through which she hopes to stimulate and inspire little minds everywhere with Toucan’s bright and bubbly décor. Adding further strength to this creative duo, Natalie has a background in Graphic Design. She now focuses her skills on creating beautiful one of a kind prints and other design concepts for Toucan. Their children also provided huge inspiration for the brand; Renee has a little boy, Levi - 1 year old and Natalie a little girl, Amelia - 4 years old. What sparked you to create your business? The sisters founded Toucan after renovating their home and realizing that beautiful and quality home décor, sourced locally, was difficult to come by- particularly for children. Their children also provided huge inspiration for the brand. As such, they are able to take inspiration from their children and create both male and female friendly décor.Growing up together, Renee and Natalie were always encouraged to use their imaginations to create their own distinct spaces. What processes are involved in creating your pieces?

Lots of playing with colours and patterns, mood boards, sketches - lots of trial and error! What inspires you in your designs? Colours, patterns, quotes….As two sisters, with different and unique styles and tastes we want to create a range of products wide enough to reflect every child’s personality. Toucan pieces take inspiration from traditional and classic décor, while incorporating a modern and ontrend feel!

What do you love the most about having your own label? Being able to create beautiful pieces and seeing them styled in people’s homes is so rewarding! We love helping people select items for their spaces to suit their style and budget! Having our own label enables us to share our favourite designs and products with our customers and we love that we can make someone smile by adding a little toucan to their homes and lives! continued on next page >

< continued from previous page Who are some of your favourite designers? So many to choose from but we love Laura Blythman and her use of colour and patterns as well as Katie McKinnon - her pieces are beyond amazing! What is your favourite item in your store right now and why? Right now my favourite item would have to be our ‘Seasons’ Quilt - the soft pastel colours and whimsy design brings light and softness into a room, the colours are calming and gorgeous tones - perfect for summer! What has been your biggest highlight? Biggest highlight would be working with and having Megan Morton style our products! As well as being able to leave our 9-5 jobs and build our studio and grow the business to where we are today! What are your plans for the future? Continue to create beautiful art pieces and expand our product range with more linen and soft furnishings added! We also have a goal of applying for and being on The Block! VESSEL & VINE Brooke Nelson used her background in interior design to turn a hobby into a successful business crafting conical leather plant hangers and concrete planters Tell us a bit about Vessel and Vine. Vessel and Vine is a handmade business based in Brisbane. I make tinted cement homewares and vessels. It started with planters but has evolved to include dishes, platters, vessels, jewellery, decorations and more recently custom wedding favour pots. Tell us about yourself and your background? I live in Brisbane with my fiancĂŠ Dave and two dogs. I studied interior design and have worked with big companies while taking on smaller freelance design projects locally. I was always a crafter and loved the handmade world. I had been an Etsy addict for years before opening my first online shop. After my 9-5 days and on weekends I would DIY and make my own things, design my own homewares and decorate our house. I love decorating, styling and creating things for my own space like sewing up a quick

cushion cover or making an artwork for a bare wall. What sparked you to create your business? I started on the succulent propagating bandwagon about four years ago after reading a fun article on how to do it on the thousands website. I felt like starting a hobby and was interested in gardening so soon enough I had an old bathtub overflowing with succulents in the backyard. I then started making little conical shaped leather plant hangers to display the cuttings in because I had some leather offcuts lying around. These evolved into a concrete version and from there the whole thing just grew, a lot like the original bathtub of succulents! About 12 months ago I took the leap into full time self employment and so far I’m loving the creative freedom to spend time developing my ideas.

What processes are involved in creating your pieces? There’s been a lot of planning and trying different techniques and ideas and a lot of pieces that ended up in the bin! Most of my moulds are handmade, so I make an object and then make a mould from that. I have a little visual diary that I scribble ideas and designs into which I learnt to do from my interior design days, sometimes they work, sometimes they don’t but it’s great to flick back through the ideas when I’m feeling a bit uninspired and see if I can adapt or tweak them in some way or even revisit ones I had forgotten about.

wouldn’t think to put together. I saw awesome concrete and natural fibre baskets recently. Splashes of metallic is still big, I love brass tones and soft gold, its timeless and a bit more neutral than copper. What has been your biggest highlight? Biggest highlight is just around the corner,Vessel and Vine will officially be 1 year old soon even though I’ve been doing this for a few years I think being self employed for 12 months will be a great milestone, I’m also about to get married in early November so that will be a nice addition to a great year!

What are your plans for the future? I have plans to travel to some of the interstate design markets next year, I’d really like to do that and meet all my lovely customers. Markets are another aspect I love of having a handmade business. It’s nice to get out of the studio and meet other makers too. I love the community aspect of handmade business. I have some lovely new things coming out in the next few weeks in time for Christmas so that’s exciting too! CONTACT: vesselandvine.com.au

What inspires you in your designs? I like to make functional things as well as ornamental. It all began with that little vessel to display succulent cuttings in. Sometimes the plant or foliage helped to inspire the object, at the moment I’m working on little cactus shaped cement Christmas ornaments which are a bit quirky and fun. Homeware trends are an inspiration as well as colour combinations. What do you love the most about having your own label? I love seeing my items in people’s homes, quite often I’ll get tagged in an Instagram shot or I’m sent a photo of a planter or vessel in its new space and that’s always nice to see. I love that I can spend my time designing my own wares and trying new techniques and ideas and have the flexibility to work from home. I think it is amazing that you can create a life and an income around your handmade wares. What do you consider to be a must have item in your home? Probably a really special piece of art or even a nice photograph framed on the wall, something that you can stop and look at and admire or look at and remember a nice memory. I also love our big comfy lounge, there’s nothing better than flopping onto the lounge after a long day, we spend a lot of time there, chilled out watching movies on Sunday afternoons, we eat there if the table is full of orders to be posted! A good couch blanket is a must too. What do you foresee as the next big trend? This is hard! I think in terms of handmade homeware trends I see mixed media starting to come through, mixing materials that you usually

INCY INTERIORS Kristy Wither’s chats with us about her journey into the creation of beautiful designers beds for people of all ages

Photography: Jason Buch Photography Styling: Megan Morton

Tell us a bit about Incy Interiors? Incy Interiors specialises in beautiful designer furniture for babies and children and more recently adults. We have a complicated business model where we wholesale, retail and also have our own store so it makes for an interesting day‌ we are certainly never bored! Tell us about yourself and your background? I am a mum to two gorgeous babes, my son Oscar, 7 and daughter Polly, 3 and wife to my very patient husband, Simon. We live in a tiny little town of 600 people, Millthorpe just outside of Orange in country NSW.

Prior to starting Incy my career was purely corporate marketing where I did two, five year stints, one with St.George Bank and another with eBay Australia managing their marketing team. What sparked you to create your business? Incy began when my son was two and was ready to move into a big boy bed. At the time I was working at eBay Australia travelling regularly to the US/Europe and seeing all the amazing products available there. I had an image in my mind of a dark brown iron bed. I searched high and low for it. I tried to get one made, I tried

Founder of Incy Interiors and interiors enthusiast, Kristy Withers. Photography: Jennifer Stocks Photography

to buy old ones off eBay but they had lead paint and I tried to import one but I just kept coming up with barriers. I harped on and on at anyone who would listen about my quest for this bed. Finally my husband said to me one day ‘for god sake stop talking about it and you just doing it’. This was the push I needed and from then Incy was born! What processes are involved in creating your pieces? When we start the design process it generally involves a brain storm with the team – what products will we launch, what is the style, etc. We then break off and do research whether that be Pinterest, magazines, related products, etc. We share ideas with each other as we come across them over a 2 week period. We then meet again to formally share ideas and to start sketching up designs. From there we go into sampling. Depending on the design this will take anywhere between one and five rounds before we have the design perfected. Once approval is given on the sample we go into full production. What inspires you in your designs? It’s funny the places you can find inspiration. The coloured metal beds came about after fridge shopping one day and seeing the Smeg coloured fridges and the metallic range came about after I got a rose gold watch for Christmas. It really is amazing where you can find inspiration. What do you love the most about having your own label? As clichéd as it is, I just love that I can do what

I love everyday. I am also lucky enough to get to work with people (our team and suppliers/ partners) and other brands that I love. I am so proud that I have created a life/business Who are some of your favourite designers? Fashion wise it is Sass & Bide, Thurley and Willow. I love their structured/ tailored look but with a bit of flair. Interiors wise Aren’t & Pyke and Steve Cordony are my firm favourites. One again taking a traditional look but putting their individual spin on it. What is your favourite item in your store right now and why? It would have to be our new nickel range which we launched this week. I love

the combination of the traditional iron bed with the masculine but luxe metallic finish. What has been your biggest highlight? My single biggest career highlight would have to be the opening of our Chatswood Chase store. It was a mammoth effort to get there but it is a project I am incredibly proud of. What are your plans for the future? We have some big plans for the remainder of the year. We have a limited edition collaboration launching in the next few weeks and then early next year we launch into the US. CONTACT: incyinteriors.com.au

MOOI BABY Fiona Cunneen curates a gorgeous array of handmade blankets, booties and toys for babies and children

Photography: Michelle Pragt

Tell us a bit about Mooi Baby? My business is called Mooi Baby (Mooi is Dutch for beautiful). We sell beautiful contemporary handmade blankets, booties and toys for babies and children that are made in Peru from luxurious natural fibres. Mooi Baby blankets are made from temperature reactive natural substrates and breathable fibres to help trap in the warmth during the colder climates - and release heat when hot. Tell us about yourself and your background?

I am a Colour Consultant and a mother of two, Georgie, 2, and Lachlan, 1. My mother is dutch, hence the business name. What sparked you to create your business? I am very passionate about interiors and homewares and after the birth of my first child, Georgie. I wanted to create beautiful bedding for her nursery as I felt it was lacking in the market. I knew I wanted items made from natural fibres

and I have always loved handmade items that have soul and tell a story. I started researching Countries like Bolivia and Peru and discovered a woman living in Lima who employed a group of woman, knitters, living in the villages and it all began from there. What processes are involved in creating your pieces? I begin with an idea, I draw a sketch and then forward it to my graphic designer who draws up the artwork and sends it off to the manufacturer.

Samples are then made and I decide whether or not they are good enough to sell! What inspires you in your designs? My children inspire me, but also things that I love - colours, textures, latest trends, interiors, fashion. What do you love the most about having your own label? I love seeing my ideas develop into a beautiful product and seeing others enjoy my product. Who are some of your favourite designers? Malin & Anna (Mrs Mighetto), Tory Burch, Trine Anderson (Ferm Living), Hecker Guthrie, Grant Featherston. What is your favourite item in your store right now and why? It would have to be the Fox Playmat because it is a little bit different and I have had so much wonderful feedback. What has been your biggest highlight? I have recently had some enquires from big stores in Germany, Saudi Arabia and Paris with regards to stocking our product which is exciting! What are your plans for the future? I hope to keep extending the range of items I have in my store. I am currently designing some babies clothing made in Peru from beautiful soft Pima Cotton. CONTACT: mooibaby.com.au

ANVIL CREEK CO Husband and wife duo, Jasmine and Scott Cameron specialise in hand poured soy wax candles with a distinct vintage appeal Tell us a bit about Anvil Creek Co.? Anvil Creek Co. specialise in hand poured soy wax candles. All candles are poured at our home which is located just out of Singleton in the Hunter Valley of NSW. Tell us about yourself and your background? I’ve worked in the mining sector for approximately 15 years. I am a mother, we have an extremely active four-year-old son. My husband, Scott, is from Singleton and I was born and raised in Cessnock, also in the Hunter Valley. We have lived on our property for approximately15 years and have been married for almost ten years. What sparked you to create your business? I’ve been obsessed with candles for such a long time, we always had them burning at home. I wanted to create a line of candles with a vintage feel to it.

I spoke to Scott and mentioned that I wanted to make soy wax candles and wanted to use vintage jars. The inspiration for the vintage jars came from Scott’s large collection of Vintage Fowlers Vacola jars. Scott has been collecting jars and other vintage items for as long as I can remember. We used to spend weekends visiting antique shops in the Hunter. Of course Scott wouldn’t part with his jars, so I thought about using mason jars, which I managed to source. We also got lucky and found a supply of 500 x size 27 Fowlers Vacola jars. What processes are involved in creating your pieces? The process is long as I like to have everything ready prior to pouring. We start with washing any jars, thoroughly drying them, wicking the jars, putting labels on the jars, and then the melting / pouring process. It takes 24hrs to cure a candle.

How do you create the different scents in your candles? We don’t make the scents, we buy the scents from a large supplier in NSW. We choose scents that we love and also scents that sound different and unusual. When selecting scents for our Dr Salty range, we choose from a large source, to pick the right one to suit the candle name and what feeling/ emotion we wanted to capture with the design work. It was a long process, but it was something we wanted to get right. What scents are currently available and which is your favourite? My favourite scent is French Pear, I have always purchased this scent and never get sick of it. It is in our current range and continues to be a favourite of mine and others. Our current ranges consists of: Cinnamon & Orange Coconut & Lime Fig & Cassis French Pear Pink Peony Sweet Pea & Vanilla Our Dr Salty Range: Caribbean Spice - a mix of exotic spices combined with a warm creamy aroma, with a base of cinnamon & clove and additional notes of black tea and vanilla bean. Lightning Moonshine - Strong notes of cedarwood and spearmint essential oils combine with juniper and fresh cut spruce giving good woody depth to this fragrance oil. Silver Fox - an engaging and masculine scent with citrusy bergamot, a more subdued note of lavender and a bold strong base of vetiver, cinnamon bark, cedarwood and tobacco leaf. Snake Oil - a strong and extremely sophisticated scent. With warming notes of amber, incense and a touch of patchouli.Very mysterious and totally mesmerising. Worry Candle – a natural earthy fragrance combining sandalwood and cedarwood with notes of vanilla, musk and patchouli. What makes your candles stand out from the rest? I think the designs on our Dr Salty range is quite

a standout with the graphics and the ‘stories’ on the back of the labels which were written by Scott. What do you love the most about having your own label? I love our label / brand / logo and I feel immense pride when people tell me that they love our products and the designs. We have some great plans for the future and will keep working on our branding.

Do you have plans to expand your scent range? In 2016 we plan to replace some of our current range with some new scents, change is always a good thing, so it is good to keep current and give the customers what they want. And we also planning to add to our Dr Salty range with another exciting scent. CONTACT: www.etsy.com/au/shop/AnvilCreekCo

SLY Graphic designer, Lauren Finks talks about the designs in her Scandinavian inspired homewares collection

Photography: Annette O’Brien

Tell us a bit about Sly Sly (formerly On The Sly textiles & Homewares) is an artful collection of homewares founded on the simple pleasures of life, with a deep appreciation for the design process. We are inspired by all things Scandinavian which is reflected in our patterns and geometrics. I’m so excited to introduce you all to the new look Sly. Tell us about yourself and your background? I’m a Melburnian though and through, graphic designer and still work as one! I studied numerous art subjects as well as design, which gave me a really well rounded base of education which I still reflect on daily.

What sparked you to create your business? I was living in Sydney at the time and had an urge to create something that was truly mine that I could share with everyone. What processes are involved in creating your pieces? Well it usually starts with an initial idea and lots of coffee. I like to just sit with music and have a solid session of pattern play. Just experimenting with ideas, shapes and lines. I like things to come together organically and not ever force an idea. Then it’s all about refining, applying and sampling. What inspires you in your designs?

Well I think everyone knows how obsessed I am with Scandinavian style of design. I also am always inspired by modernist design. I just think it was so ahead of its time and those same principles are still used in design today. Patterns and geometrics are my thing. What do you love the most about having your own label? The satisfaction that people like my designs is amazing. It’s a feeling that is hard to describe but when people want these items in their homes it’s truly rewarding. I also love a challenge and pushing boundaries. Who are some of your favourite designers? The classics like Eames, Kartell, Wegner, Hay for their simple form, but I also love many new designers and local ones like the guys at Dowel Jones, Redfox and Wilcox, Barnaby Lane etc What is your favourite item in your store right now and why? Ooh a tough one. I love our Apex black cushion. It’s just balanced to me, classic but contemporary, easy to style, bold but chic. What has been your biggest highlight? Probably working with the Art Series Hotel Group on 2 of their properties was a huge highlight What are your plans for the future? Well we have just released a brand new look and name, coinciding with our 2nd birthday and we have some great new products on the way too. We are taking a slightly new road and are very excited about where we are heading. Is there anything else you would like to tell us about your business? Just to keep you eyes peeled! We are really thankful for everyone who has contributed in any way to Sly and hope everyone likes where we are going and hope grow more in the future. CONTACT: onthesly.com.au

HANG IT DESIGNS Jasmin brings her love of retro decor to life with her handcrafted macramé plant hangers Tell us a bit about Hang It Designs? Hang It Designs is a relatively new company, started only three months ago, the idea was inspired by my love of retro décor and the long interesting history behind the macramé hanger. I think it’s such an amazing piece of decorative wall furniture that can be used to brighten up a home or display an amazing piece of artwork in a prominent position. My company is basically about bringing that beauty and era back into the homes of today’s generation. My designs have remained loyal to the original style of the macramé, however I have put a modern twist on the macramé of the past by using combining vibrant dip dyed colours and minimalistic knot styles with an elegant touch

that look great in any home. Another thing my company is focused on is giving people the opportunity to have a real authentic and unique piece of furniture in their home that has not been mass-produced in a factory. I think the methods I use to make my hangers plays an important part in preserving the history of the macramé that has been made in the same way for centuries. Tell us about yourself and your background? So I guess I’ll start with my name, Jasmin and I am a Melbourne girl. I have a passion for travel and have been to over thirty countries so far, with many more planned for the future. I can be very impulsive at times which is how Hang It Designs started, none of my friends or family

were aware I was starting a business aside from my partner. Some fun facts about me – I have a Moodle called Winston, my favourite food is ice cream, my last holiday was to Cuba and I can’t live without nail polish. What sparked you to create your business? It was actually my partner who pushed me to take the plunge and he has been so supportive throughout my journey. Until recently I was someone who was defined by the boundaries of social acceptability, I worked in a steady nine to five job in a stereotypical corporate environment. I was progressing down a path with limited options that would have most likely defined the rest of my life. Deep down I knew for certain that it was never my real passion, and that I had so much more to offer in the realms of creativity and artistic expression. With travel and exploration being such a huge part of my life I have experienced first hand the amazing ability that people from around the world possess, to express themselves though design and creativity. These experiences have had a huge impact on my development and my passion for discovery and exposure to unique home wares and design. What processes are involved in creating your pieces? With a high level of attention to detail I knot my macramé hangers using real woven cotton rope. After the process of knotting my hangers, I individually dip dye each one of them using vivid and vibrant colours. Each hanger is then carefully inspected to ensure the highest level of quality as I place a tremendous amount of pride in each hanger I create. I feel that my ability to deliver a unique, high quality product in paramount as it represents my brand and me personally. My products need to market themselves through “word of mouth” and the only way for this to occur is by creating something that people love.

“I have experienced first hand the amazing ability that people from around the world possess, to express themselves though design and creativity.”

What inspires you in your designs? Other than the popular 70s Macramé Hanger (check out my Pinterest board), I guess its safe to say everything around me is an inspiration! When I’m out and about I may see a colour or a shade that catches my eye and I get instant inspiration to somehow incorporate it into my Macramé hangers. I often see plants displayed in uninspiring ways, and it causes me to conjure up creative ways to hang them up and display them in new exciting ways. I’m consistently taking random images on my iPhone to save all the amazing new ideas I come across. My latest colour “mint” actually came to me

whist I was painting me nails. So yes, I am currently rocking mint nail polish and as I said, absolutely everything is an inspiration for me. What do you love the most about having your own label? Owning my own label really feels amazing, knowing that what I have created will bring joy to people when it is displayed in their home, Its an incredible feeling. When my customers send me photos of me hangers in there home looking amazing, it really makes it all worth while. continued on next page >

“I love the being able to share something that I enjoy doing, I think my passion demonstrated by my work and a part of me goes into every item I make.” < continued from previous page I love the being able to share something that I enjoy doing, I think my passion demonstrated by my work and a part of me goes into every item I make. Since its launch Hang It has been a really positive experience for me with only a few small bumps along the way. What is your favourite item in your store right now and why? Definitely my Mint dip dyed Macramé hanger. It such a bright spring colour and looks great with all my plants. The colour is vibrant but subtle enough that it draws the right attention to spaces that it’s displayed in. What has been your biggest highlight? It would have to be the day I actually quit my job and decided to devote myself to creating a business that was focussed around my passion.

I was so nervous, and it was a time of real uncertainty, however the feeling was truly amazing! So far this up hill climb is going from strength to strength, this is why I am so motivated to keep expanding my range and will be consistently adding new colours and product to my line. What are your plans for the future? Besides adding to my macramé hanger range with new colours and designs there are actually two new projects I am working on. By mid next year I would like to begin showcasing other Australian designers on my website to help promote other small businesses and Aussie start-ups. Its really rewarding to support the talented people in out own backyard and I would love it if I could help people follow their dreams the way I have. CONTACT: hangitdesigns.com
