February is one of my favorite months! Not only do we celebrate Valentine’s Day, but we are able to spread the love of beef during Heart Health month!

Inside this issue you will find topof-the-industry genetics that will add value to any herd. During bull sale season, I am privileged to work with these leading producers across the nation.

This issue is themed, “All Things Beef!” According to a past Beef Checkoff survey of consumers, “In this month of romance, beef is the preferred choice of Americans, because nothing says love like a great steak

dinner for Valentine’s Day. “In addition, 53% of Americans identify filet mignon as the food most associated with candlelight romance and 50% of Americans think filet mignon is the best way to show their love.”

I hope your Valentine’s day includes beef, whether it be jerky roses or heart-shaped ribeyes (eye of the ribeye). I pray the western states will finally receive the moisture we need for a successful spring, your cows calve easy and that our fellow ranchers in Australia know our hearts are with them as they face drastic fire.

NCA President’s Monthly Message “You can’t just be a cowboy if you want to run a ranch anymore.” Never were truer words spoken describing the current state of our livestock industry. These were the words of a younger rancher from northern Elko County that I had the opportunity to visit with during the Cattleman’s Update in Elko last Tom Barnes month.

January was very busy with meetings to discuss sage grouse, Lahontan cutthroat trout issues, water rights and the Nevada Department of Agriculture. While attending such meetings, I continue to realize how important it is to be informed and engaged on issues.

Going to meetings is time consuming and we all have more pressing things to be done at home, but not attending and being engaged and informed can also be detrimental to your operation. Rest assured, your NCA leadership is engaged and we will do our best to keep all of you informed as the issue landscape changes.

But investing the time to truly understand the issues that directly impact your

individual operations is paramount to being able to defend ourselves and our unique situations. The more invested we all are in our futures, the stronger we will be as an industry.

Public land issues are extremely important to most Nevada ranches but there are also a lot of other issues vital to the success of our businesses. I want to compliment the CABNR team that put together this year’s Cattleman’s Update.

They did a great job of bringing many of these other topics of importance to our attention. They had great presenters with quality and timely material. In order to run a successful ranch we have to be informed and knowledgeable on a wide range of subjects from public land issues to production management to building consumer confidence and we need to understand the economy that we are operating within.

My young friend was absolutely correct, but I’m going to add that if you can run a successful ranch, you can still be a cowboy.

The New Year has kicked off to a busy start for the Nevada Cattlemen’s Association (NCA). As you are more than likely aware of, we strive to promote a dynamic and profitable Nevada Beef Industry.

One way to achieve that is to support opportunities for education for Nevada producers. Over the past month, there have been opportunities for education. During the second week of January, the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), hosted the Cattlemen’s Update.

This annual update is a weeklong series that goes around the state that includes speakers from different entities. This year’s speakers consisted of professionals from the College of Agriculture Biotechnology and Natural Resources (CABNR) along with the various sponsors.

An overview of how bull testing impacts cow efficiency by Leo McDonnell, Owner of Midland Bull Test from Columbus, MT. Bill Dale, with the NV Beef Council, gave an update about Fake Meat and the research being done by the Beef Checkoff. We are very grateful for the University’s efforts with putting on this update.

Along with going to the update, the NCA staff and leadership have attended meetings to discuss the conservation credit system, adaptive management, Sage Grouse, Lahontan Cutthroat Trout issues, water

rights, and the Nevada Department of Agriculture.

For this month, major activities coming up include the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) Cattle Industry Convention in San Antonio, TX on the 5-8th, the NCA Board of Directors Meeting on the 14th in Fallon, NV, and the Annual Fallon All Breeds Bull Sale (FBS) on the 15th.

Remembering Our Loved Ones Frances “Fran” Werner March 31, 1941 – December 23, 2019 Frances “Fran” Werner, 78, of Steamboat Springs passed away December 23, 2019.

She was born March 31, 1941 in Steamboat Springs, CO to Glenn and Thelma Werner. Fran grew up on a cattle ranch in the Yampa Valley, along with her two siblings, Jan and Dale.

After high school she attended Loretto Heights College in Denver and then married her high school sweetheart, Mike Harding. They were married for 24 years and together they raised 4 daughters.

Fran lived a full life as a loving mother and grandmother.

She was a teacher’s aid, administrative assistant for Ski Corp slope maintenance, school bus driver, entrepreneur, and rancher. Fran had a passion for the outdoors. She loved being on the water (river trips, sea kayaking, and boats); hiking in the Rocky Mountains with her daughters; skiing with her grandkids (even if they were snowboarding!); riding horses; gardening; driving cattle on Mt. Werner for summer grazing; working sheep in Clark; and discovering nature with her grandkids.

Marjorie “Marge” (Schwandt) Urrea Marjorie “Marge” (Schwandt) Urrea passed away on December 22, 2019 at the age of 83.

Marge was born on November 1, 1936 in Lancaster, CA to Rudy and Lottie Schwandt. On November 14, 1954 Marge wed John Urrea. The family moved to Smith Valley, NV in April 1963. Marge enjoyed a life of

cooking, crafting, woodcutting, arrowhead hunting, ranching, playing Bridge, and was a member of Beta Sigma Phi. Marge is survived by husband John of 65 years; children Bob (Suzy) Urrea, Terri (Les) Chichester; grandchildren Kris Urrea, Kim Urrea, Lindsay (Tony Medahunsi) Chichester, and Kellie (Matt Jameson) Chichester; and numerous great-grandchildren.

Fran’s inquisitive nature led to her love of traveling; living in 5 states and visiting 7 countries.

Most of all she loved her family; being a mom and a beloved Nana.

Fran is survived by her sister, Jan Gilbert; four daughters – Dawn (Cal), Michelle (Neil), Jennifer (Sam), Katrina (Travis); 11 grandchildren – Thaysha, Wyatt, Teya, Tal, Tane, Eric, Fletcher, Lauren, Samantha, Austin, and Ashlyn; and 7 great-grandchildren – Raleigh, Rhett, Dirk, Allie, Ty, Kalee, and Rylan. All of whom she loved and touched deeply.

She will be missed and forever in our hearts. A celebration of her life will be held in the summer of 2020.

FAUX MEAT A Genetically Modified, Highly Processed Food Source With 18 Million Times the Estrogen as an Actual Beef Patty Jennifer Whiteley | Nevada Rancher Magazine In recent years, we have learned that certain words and phrases strike fear into the hearts of consumers.

Words like GMO, Antibiotics and Hormones are bad, and phrases like Non-GMO, Antibiotic and Hormone Free, and Clean Foods are often used as selling points for many of the safe and wholesome products we are already producing in Agriculture to make consumers feel better about the foods they are buying.

The term “plant based” used in reference to imitation meats is also engineered to make consumers feel better about buying faux meats.

Traditional veggie burgers are made from combinations of soy, beans and lentils. They have a dry, crumbly texture that’s nothing like beef.

The Impossible Burger has changed that with its pink color, juicy dribbles, smoky flavor and the ability to get that characteristically charred crust that previously only a grilled beef burger could offer, made with red, plant-based heme to make it taste meaty and look more like a burger. (Heme is what makes meat taste like meat. It’s an essential molecule found in every living plant and animal — most abundantly in animals.

In plant based “meats,” plant-based heme is made via fermentation of genetically engineered yeast).

According to advertisements by leading producers of faux meat, this meatless patty even bleeds like beef, so much so that seasoned vegans can’t tell the difference between the Impossible Burger and an actual hamburger.

To some, this is good news. People actually believe that agriculture, primarily beef production is one of the largest factors contributing to climate change and global warming.

They believe that becoming vegan or cutting down on your own personal meat consumption could be the single most effective action you can personally take to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

In truth, animal agriculture is responsible for only 13-18% of human caused greenhouse gas emissions globally, even lower in the U.S. Fossil fuel combustion for energy and transportation is responsible for approximately 64% of human caused greenhouse gas emissions globally. (www.

Two of the most popular meat alternative companies are Impossible Burger and Beyond Burger which are available in 40,000 restaurants and grocery stores combined.

While they use relatively similar ingredients, they do differ in key components of their proteins. The Beyond Burger is made with ingredients like peas, mung beans and rice while the Impossible Burger includes soy protein concentrate, coconut oil and sunflower oil.

All that said, it doesn’t mean it’s necessarily healthier than meat. For example, the burgers are relatively similar in terms of calorie count with lean ground beef, Impossible Burger and Beyond Burger all clocking in

The plant-based meat also has a fair amount of sodium and saturated fat. and both contain unhealthy amounts of saturated fat and salt and more saturated fat than a regular hamburger made from lean beef.

Whole Foods CEO John Mackey, who has been vegan for more than 20 years, says he can’t endorse any plant-based meat substitutes currently on the market due to their ingredient lists. “I don’t think eating highly processed foods is healthy,” Mackey said in a 2019 interview with CNBC. “I think people thrive on eating whole foods. As for health, I will not endorse that, and that is about as big of criticism that I will do in public.”

Writing in the health journal BMJ Nutrition, Prevention & Health, Dr. Emma Derbyshire says a plant-based diet lacks choline — a key nutrient for mental development. It is mainly found in beef, eggs, dairy, fish and chicken.

According to Derbyshire, studies suggest low levels in pregnancy can harm the fetus and raise the child’s risk of memory and brainpower problems. Nutritionists also say nine in 10 adults are lacking in choline and that will worsen as more ditch meat and eggs. “It could leave many women of childbearing age deficient in this key nutrient,” Derbyshire

said. (Nick McDermott, The Sun August 2019).

Another major concern of plant based faux meats is the amount of estrogen in the product. Dr. James Stangle, a South Dakota veterinarian issued a warning about imitation meat products.

“The impossible whopper patty is made from 24 ingredients,” Stangle wrote. “The most important ingredient is soy protein. The whopper patty has just one ingredient. That would be beef. The impossible whopper has 44mg of estrogen and the whopper has 2.5 ng of estrogen.”

There are 1 million nanograms (ng) in 1 milligram (mg).

Essentially, the impossible whopper has 18 million times as much estrogen as a regular whopper.

While the idea of a plant based faux meat may give consumers the illusion that they are being more ecofriendly, lowering their carbon footprint, and putting safer, more wholesome foods into their bodies they really aren’t. They are largely misinformed.

n many western regions, keeping stock water ice-free can be a frustrating issue during colder months. In some pastures water availability is also an issue.

Gerald and Pat Vandervalk who raise cattle near Clareshom, Alberta have solved the challenges of winter water for their cattle by utilizing the springs on their ranch. The water systems Gerald created work well in several kinds of situations, and he now makes and sells his innovative water troughs, made from big tires.

“We are fortunate on our ranch because we have so many springs; we don’t have to pump any water,” he says. Springs run all the time, and the water from a spring is generally about 40 degrees year round and doesn’t freeze as quickly as the water in a river or stream.

“Sometimes if it’s a slower spring (not as much volume/flow) you might have to partially cover the trough or use a smaller trough so there is not as much surface area to freeze. We use different size tires to make the troughs; tires are virtually indestructible.”

trough he puts a 90-degree angle in the pipe where the water comes in, which shoots the water across the surface. That creates more movement where the water is coming in and running across the surface and it never freezes there. This allows the cows to always have access to an area of open water and no ice, where they can drink. The ideal situation is a good fast-flowing spring.

To make the troughs, he uses concrete for the bottom. “We use black poly pipe and pull it up through the bottom of the trough. Most of these troughs are designed for springs, so I usually have three pipes coming through—the intake and two overflows. The reason for the two overflow pipes is that sometimes (if you are fortunate to have a lot of water in your spring) it takes two overflows to take the excess water, so the trough won’t overflow, especially if the water is coming in with a bit of pressure (such as gravity flow). Another reason for the second pipe is that sometimes a few years later the person decides to take the overflow water from that trough and pipe it down the hill and across the fence to another pasture.

It’s pretty hard to put another hole in the concrete bottom so we just put in two overflow pipes in case they want to use some of that water for another trough, down in the next field,” he explains. This works nicely on a spring.

“There are also some producers using my troughs with a solar

watering system, and to keep from overflowing the trough they need to cut the intake pipe off a bit, so it is low enough that a float can be put on it. Whenever you are pumping water, you’d want a float,” he says.

A unique way of preventing ice buildup is a method Gerald has seen done by another producer.

“When we cut the top out of the tire we cut all around the outside, but he cuts about 6 or so holes/slots in the top part of the side walls, big enough for a cow’s head, and then has a tube (like an inner tube from a tractor tire) at each hole, and the tube goes down into the trough, into the water. This makes for less surface area on top of the trough, and where a cow sticks her nose down through that circle where she drinks from, the tube goes down a ways into the water.”

Thus the cattle are always pulling warmer water off the bottom of the trough. “The tube is big enough that there is plenty of room for the cow’s head and nose and it drops about a foot down into the water. This fellow’s troughs have a float, since the water is coming in with pressure,” says Vandervalk.

“I didn’t ask how he cut the holes in the side. The older tires were made out of nylon and easy to cut but the newer ones have some steel in them. You can easily find something to cut rubber/nylon, and something to cut steel, but it’s harder to find something that will cut both!” he says.

this costs more, and is not necessary in many situations. On a small herd we can usually get by fine with just the solar power, depending on herd management and whether the herd is growing (the rancher planning to get more cows). Our systems are all designed to be expanded if the need arises. We can have a 10year water management plan ahead of time, and know which pieces and when we need to add them. We want a producer to have the flexibility to be able to use this system year round and be able to expand and use it for 10, 15 years or more. This makes it more cost-effective,” he explains.

Many people today are trying to extend fall and winter grazing, using some remote areas that are far from the barnyard, and need to have water out there where the cows are grazing. There are many benefits when using solar-powered winter water systems. There are many ways to provide water and each producer must figure out what works for his own situation and get the best return for his investment — with long-term benefits.

underground and above the ground it has a fairly small watering bowl. The more cows, the better it works, with more warm water flowing. The underground tubes hold heat from the ground as the warm water comes from down below, in a pressurized system, with a float on the trough,” he says.

Marvin Jackson (Sundog Solar, near Sundre, Alberta) sells winter water systems to ranchers, powered by solar panels. “Our business is named after sundogs in the sky, which signal a change of weather. We have two types of system, depending on what might be required at a certain site in terms of water sources or number of cattle,” he says.

“Sometimes the water source is limited, or we may be dealing with a dugout, a board well, or no power source at the site. The main system we sell can service herds up to 600 cows. This is a geothermal tank (350-gallon insulated rectangular tank) that stays full of water all the time; we are using heat from the ground to keep it warm,” says Jackson. Solar power is used for bringing the water up into the tank.

The tank is fully enclosed and the cows access the water through a tapered, angled drinking tube. The tank and drinking tube is low enough that a calf can reach it. “The tube is shaped the same as the cow’s head when she puts it in, but the taper is from small to large (smaller at the top, like a bell). There will be open water there—no ball or flap covering the surface. Because of the taper, any ice can be readily pushed down and usually isn’t very thick. Depending on wind chill and number of cows on the system we might expect up to an inch of ice at minus 40 degrees.” The cow can push her chin/nose down onto it and easily push down/break any ice that might be there, but at temperatures below minus 35 the system should be checked daily.

“Depending on the number of cattle using the tank, there is generally no ice at all on these tanks, even down to 35 below zero, or even down to minus 40 with a big herd. With a lot of cows drinking, there is enough water movement that the ice is less apt to freeze, and also the cows know that even if there is a little bit of ice it just pushes out of the way,” says Jackson. If the tank and access points are designed properly, the water holds a lot of heat from the ground and is slow to freeze.

“The tube is designed so that only one cow can drink at a time, with one tube for approximately every 80 cows. The cows learn to take their turn. A common worry that people have, before they purchase one of these troughs, is that the cows will fight over the water, like they do over traditional stock-watering systems. The difference with this design is that only one cow can drink at a time, not one and a half. They learn quickly that they might as well stand there and wait because they can’t get any water anyway until the first cow is finished. Cows only fight over water in a situation that humans created by giving them room for one and a half cows to drink.

The half cow always wants to be number one,” he explains.

With this system the dominant cow drinks first and the others wait their turn, knowing they will eventually get water. Also, in winter, cows’ water requirements are less than in summer and they are not as impatient.

“We also have a fully portable system that can be moved from one pasture to another when people rotate grazing. We can either add a winter package to the portable system or have one winter system for the area where the cows all come back to the winter pasture or feeding area after summer grazing on various pastures. We can match the cow management and movement, and have the investment utilized 12 months of the year.”

There is usually enough sunshine to run solar panels. “On larger herds in some areas we add a wind generator in a hybrid system that can use both wind and solar power. We could put wind capability on all the systems, but

“Our region is very hilly, with quite a bit of slope, so we can also use dams to hold back and collect water in those draws, and then put a water system below it to let some of that water into a trough. This is a little different than a dugout. In my opinion, a dugout is in a relatively flat area where there might be a depression where water collects and you just dig it deeper, for more storage. A dam is where the water would normally run down the coulee and you put in a dam to catch it in certain spot,” says Vandervalk. The pond created by the dam or dugout is then fenced off from the cows so they can’t get into it.

Often the water collected behind a dam is seasonal runoff, such as in the spring, or after any major rain, holding enough water to store there for cattle use. “When we are making the dam we put a pipe through the bottom of it because it’s easier to do then. We put a valve on that pipe, similar to a stop/drain valve where the valve is below ground. The valve is always below frost, so if we need water for the cows in January we can just go turn that valve on and have easy access to water--coming through the pipe at the bottom of the dam,” he explains.

These systems work well for summer or winter. “In the summer we just put a float on the trough and the water flows in until the trough is full and then it shuts off automatically. For winter, the cow have a little less water requirement so we let it run continually, but throttle it down, for less flow. We put a pipe fitting down to half inch or quarter inch or whatever size we think we need, and let it run all the time, which helps keep it from freezing. There is usually enough water in the dam to supply the cows for a while, especially if they are only there for a few weeks in that pasture,” says Vandervalk.

In this situation the trough would have an overflow, which keeps the excess running on through into a buried overflow pipe that diverts the water on down the coulee, away from the trough. That way there is no overflow water around the trough to freeze and create a skating rink for the cattle. “We usually use at least a 30-foot overflow pipe so the water would come out farther down the coulee. You don’t want the overflow pipe too long, however, or it might freeze and plug up.

It helps if there is a good slope, so the water flows readily down the overflow pipe and won’t freeze,” he explains.

“Another option we sometimes use on a dugout if it has a little bit of slope is to install a tire trough just a little ways from the dugout, and use a 12-volt pump (similar to an RV pump) to pump the water from the bottom of the dugout to the trough. The pump can be powered by electricity if it is available, or solar panels, windmill or batteries,” says Vandervalk.

“We use a 1½ inch line to the trough and insert a smaller line (half-inch) inside it.

We pump water up the ½ inch line into the trough and let it run all the time—always pumping water from the dugout and up to the trough. The water goes into the trough and the bigger, outer pipe acts as an overflow.

When the trough is full it runs right back down that line and back into the dugout, recycling any water that isn’t used. This way the trough doesn’t freeze,” he explains.

“The pump is running all the time, but these little pumps don’t take much power, depending on how far you have to lift the water into the nearby trough. It also depends on how many cows you are watering. If it’s only 20 cows you’d only need a very small pump but if you are running 300 cows you’d need more water flowing,” he says.

“There are some other ideas that I’ve seen.

For instance you can buy a frost-free waterer that has a lot of underground storage. A larger producer in our area uses a series of up and down tubes where they store a lot of water

Feed Efficiency: How We Got It All Wrong Kit Pharo Pharo Cattle Company

Defining and measuring feed efficiency is something I have always struggled with. It’s definitely not as easy as science wants it to be. Science wants to break everything down into understandable bits and pieces. Unfortunately, that won’t work in the real world. The real world is made up of wholes with thousands of interactive pieces.

Before we continue, we need to understand that all beef animals fall into two basic categories. Some animals are destined to end up on the dinner table, while others are working in a cowherd to produce more beef animals. Ironically, success in both categories is dependent on the same thing — storing up energy in the form of fat. Beef does not provide an enjoyable eating experience until it has stored up enough fat to grade Choice or Prime. A cow is incapable of getting bred until she has stored up enough fat to come into estrous.

All beef animals must meet their maintenance

requirements before any weight gain can take place.

After the maintenance requirements have been met, nutrients will first be allocated to skeletal and muscle growth. After those needs have been taken care of, nutrients are made available for milk production in lactating animals.

Fat deposition, which is by far the most important, cannot take place until all other needs have been met.

A pound of fat requires 2.5 times more energy than a pound of muscle. Therefore, it takes substantially more pounds of feed to produce a pound of fat than it takes to produce a pound of muscle or bone.

You cannot assume the animal that gains the most is the most efficient because you don’t know how much feed was required to achieve those gains. Therefore, the beef industry came up

with ways to determine how much feed is required to produce a pound of gain. On the surface, this seems like the ideal way to measure feed efficiency. In reality, though, feed to gain ratios have done nothing but create taller and taller animals that are leaner and leaner. Animals that do the best in these tests are gaining pounds of skeleton and muscle – not fat.

It takes much, much less feed to produce skeleton and muscle than it does to produce fat.

More and more seedstock producers are testing their bulls for so-called “feed efficiency.” Without exception, these tests heavily favor tall, hard-keeping animals.

Moderate-framed, early-maturing animals that have the propensity for fat deposition will never be able to compete with tall, late-maturing, hard-keeping

animals in a feed-efficiency test. Remember, it takes 2.5 times more energy (feed) to produce a pound of fat (body condition) than it does to produce a pound of muscle or bone.

Daughters of the socalled “feed efficient” bulls will be tall, late-maturing, hard-keeping and difficult to get bred. Fertility is more a function of fleshing ability than of anything else. Cows must be storing up energy

in the form of fat before reproduction is possible.

Therefore, if you produce your own replacement heifers and if you are going to purchase bulls that have been tested for feed efficiency, we suggest you to select for bulls that performed the worst in the feed efficiency test. They will produce early-maturing replacement females with great fleshing ability.

With Valentine’s Day around the corner, I thought it appropriate to look at those vows we take with our loved ones.

Now mind you, The Cow Boss and I are not your Hallmark Holiday type of folks. But while sitting in the pick-up the other day, he and I happened upon this conversation.

I think it started with something to the effect of him saying, “Do you smell that?” Now I never know what smell will follow, but this time it was the smell of SPRING TIME — better known in our household as BRANDING SEASON. And boy did it smell like the happiest time of year. I followed his comment with, “You know, my arm is feeling a little twitchy … I think IT IS almost branding season.”

And so the conversation went. It went all the way to me saying, “You know, I think when we renew our vows there needs to be some in there about branding seasons!”

With year 11 nipping at our anniversary heels, I think these come right in time. And being our life revolves around all things beef, I see it fitting.

Now let me back up a few steps, when we got married it was the most amazing day of our lives. Looking back, we were babies, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

A cowboy preacher married us, and he made the ceremony and vows fit us perfectly.

Mind you, as a born and raised Catholic, and from a very Italian family — think Soprano’s, circa early 2000s — it was quite the shocker to the ole family when we decided to get married outside and by a COWBOY preacher.

But our preacher was the man, and the best thing he had us vow, was that in marriage there should never be competition … unless you are roping. And boy has that been the truth.

So now, as the hubby and I are past the decade mark of marital bliss, I can honestly say — when all else fails we take it to the roping pen. Whether its team roping, doctoring calves, branding, or just dummy roping, we take spinning a few seriously.

So back to the vows, I think a few more needed to be added on that wedding day in addition to the usual, “in sickness and in health … ” Maybe a few that state “in bovine or in drought.”

Now ladies, those of you who share with me the love of springtime, baby calves and the feeling of double hocking one, can relate to these. Whether you are a newlywed or tried and true, you too may want to add these to your marriage vows.

Cowboy Vows

1. I vow to never go to a calf branding without my bride by my side.

2. I vow to always ask the Mrs. first if she wants to doctor calves.

3. I vow to always make sure there is a seat in the pick-up clean enough for her to sit in.

4. I vow to let her ride my good bridle horse at least at 3 brandings a year.

5. I vow to train all her colts so she can brand and doctor on them too.

6. I vow to do the midnight to 4 a.m. heifer check and never give her a hard time for not getting up.

7. I vow to love all her little dogs, even if she has more than one.

8. I vow to let her name every cow in the herd and bottle baby we keep.

Cowgirl Vows

1. I vow to always love you, even during calving season.

2. I vow to love you even when you smell like burnt calf hair.

3. I vow to always check your pockets for pocket knives, needles, red books, and bullets before doing laundry.

4. I vow to tolerate your crazy cow dogs and let the “retired” ones in when it’s freezing outside.

5. I vow to accept the fact that I will never have anything white, clean, or free of stains.

6. I vow to accept cow poop, mud and horse hair as the new flooring adornments.

I am sure I could add a few more to both lists. But at the end of the day, the vow that we both repeat is, “love me like you love branding season!”

While the beef industry remains a key component of Nevada’s economy, 2019 brought continued economic challenges.

Initial data from the USDA suggests that Nevada ranchers had minimal profits for 2019, and trade disputes led to additional challenges for Nevada’s agriculture exports. Fortunately, most industry projections based on USDA data suggest increased demand and a positive outlook for 2020.

On Jan. 1, 2020 the US-Japan trade deal went into effect, lowering tariffs on United States agriculture products. This trade deal, in addition to the potential of stabilizing trade relationships with Canada, Mexico and China, should help Nevada exports increase in 2020. The slow in agriculture exports in 2019 was mitigated through sales to other countries.

Nevada food and agriculture companies were able to focus on strengthening partnerships with other longtime trade partners, creating even greater potential in 2020. The Nevada Department of Agriculture (NDA) helps strengthen these relationships on behalf of the industry through networking, trade shows, trade missions and market research.

The impact of African Swine Fever on international pork markets also presents

an opportunity for Nevada’s cattle industry as impacted countries increase sourcing of alternative protein sources.

Given growing opportunities, the NDA is prepared to assist Nevada’s cattle industry to establish market opportunities and enhance Nevada’s overall international export potential. NDA’s global trade staff provides export trainings, educational seminars, connections to international partners, customized international market research, international buyer trade leads, and inbound/outbound trade missions to find the best fit for our farmers and ranchers.

www.rubyuhart.com My husband of 48 years, Tom DeForest, and I have a small cattle and hay ranch a couple of miles out of Adin, CA in Modoc County.

It’s just the two of us on the place.

Our one daughter, Sarah, is the Director of External Relations for the College of Agriculture at the University of California, Chico. Our other daughter, Becky, is the Executive Director for the Alpine County Chamber of Commerce in Markleeville, CA. She has two children, Ruby, 15, and Hayden, 13. We love it when they can all come home to visit and help us with whatever we have going on.

I guess I can say I grew up in ranching, but not on a ranch. I was born in Carmel, CA. My Dad, Jim Wolter, was born and raised in the Carmel Valley ranch and farming community, as a well as his father and grandfather. When I was 7 years old we moved to Grass Valley, CA for health and financial reasons.

Mom (Janet) and Dad soon bought a small 10 acre place with a house and a barn. Dad went to work in heavy equipment construction. My two brothers and sister and I had a great childhood there. Mom and Dad did everything they could to have a place for us kids to have 4-H and FFA projects and horses to ride.

And they instilled the love of our ranch heritage in each of us.

I went to Cal Poly and that’s where I met Tom. He came from a similar background as I. His parents (Ches and Grace DeForest) both came from ranch families.

Tom grew up on a ranch that his Dad managed. So after we were married we started working for ranches throughout Northern California and Southern Oregon. We always had the dream of having a place of our own, but deep in our brains we knew it was probably just a dream.

We had the blessing of working with some great cowboys and buckaroos, cattlemen and businessmen.

We both learned a lot. I always wanted to be working along-side of Tom and to be on a horse. The girls came along and our family was complete. But deep down, we wanted a place of our own. While working at the Drews Valley Ranch, Lakeview, OR for Jack Sparrowk, we were offered an opportunity to run a few “pee-wee” calves through the winter and summer. We went to the bank and got a loan. That project payed off and we got another loan to buy five cows. And that’s basically how it started, from scratch. We had some extraordinary opportunities. We are forever grateful for the wonderful people that were willing to give us a hand. We worked really hard. At times we experienced some big challenges and setbacks. But we never gave up.

We have a herd of Hereford and Angus cross commercial cows that we calve in the summer in Modoc County on mostly rented pasture.

Then we ship the pairs to rented winter pasture on the Sutter Buttes and further south to the Calaveras County foothills. Some of the calves are sold off the cows in the spring, and some are brought home to run as stockers until August or September. Our ranch has made a good headquarters to process and ship cattle out of.

We also have a small herd of registered Hereford cows that we raise bulls for our own use and to sell also. We used to have a stallion and up to 5 broodmares.

We raised the colts and got them started and eventually sold them.

As we are getting older and it’s been harder to keep the colts ridden we decided to sell the stallion and last broodmare a year ago. I really miss seeing the mares and colts. But we are still riding some nice horses that we raised.

Every day is different. I am really lucky that Tom cooks breakfast.

That gives me a chance to have some time to work on the computer, start straightening the house up, and generally get ready for the rest of the day. Other than that, the duties change with the season.

There are so many things I do. And I know that I am never bored. I’ve always got something to do. I take pride in some stream restoration, wildlife habitat and environmental improvements that we have done on the ranch. I do all the bookwork, banking, taxes and government reporting. I help Tom feed. We work our cattle together. He is in charge of the vaccinating and working the chute. I bring the cattle by horseback up to the tub and into the lead up. One pet peeve of mine is letting cows turn back. So I take pride in how I handle the cows and how smoothly they work. We check the cattle and make sure they are on fresh feed. If Tom has to go south to ship cattle home, I stay here to receive them and settle the weaners. We help neighbors and friends brand and they help us. I love to rope in the branding pen. Other things I do include weed spraying and weed chopping. I haul rock to stream banks and washes to prevent erosion. I try to keep the garden and headquarters mowed and neat. I help Tom rebuild and repair our corrals and fences. I work in my vegetable garden. I sew. I do leatherwork. I take photographs. I do a little bit of everything.

My favorite thing is definitely being able to work with Tom. We are a pretty good team, even if I say so myself. We work well together.

We work quiet. And our cattle work well for us. The two of us can get a lot done. And of course I enjoy being outside with our animals and

We don’t argue as much as we used to though. After all these years we pretty much know what is expected of each other, as long as we remember to communicate. When I go in a corral with cattle, my first priority is the benefit of the cattle. And that is Tom’s too. So we generally see eye to eye.

I think the hardest thing about ranching for me is dealing with the actions of others. Most people are really good, but occasionally we have had to deal with bankers that wouldn’t work with us, crazy drivers on the highway, goofy government regulations like California Fish and Game Commission making the wolf an endangered species in California, development of rangeland into trees and urbanization, burdensome water regulations, etc., etc. One clear, crisp, November afternoon Tom and I were moving 75 pairs down the highway on a 5 mile straight stretch. A guy came driving from behind us and plowed into the cows. It was a miracle that we, nor a lady that was driving in the other lane, weren’t hurt. But 5 cows and 3 calves were killed and many more injured. The poor bunch of cows had their lives turned upside down, much less how frightening it was to us. We were not at fault as it is open range. But ever since then, we have the California Highway Patrol escort us when moving cows. I think I might still have a little PTSD from that event.

When things that we can’t control come up, we just deal with them.

They may be disappointing at the time, but a lot of times there’s nothing we can do other than accommodate our plans and deal with whatever needs to be dealt with. I know I’ve been disappointed plenty of times in missing holiday plans. But we just deal with the stuff. Yes, we have our stresses. But I can’t imagine dealing with the stress of urban life. When I get stressed here I look around and see all of the blessing around me. I see open space, wildlife, cattle, horses, dogs, rangeland, trees, and rocks. I smell fresh air. I hear birds, coyotes, frogs, cattle. I feel nature. I feel close to God and I am thankful I am here.

I love and appreciate all the seasons, but I have to say that my favorite is when we sell and ship our calves and/or yearlings. That is the culmination of all the seasons.

It’s the “harvest season”. I take great pride in putting those big, healthy, growthy cattle on the truck. We have provided them the best quality of life that we could. It is a job well done. And I say a prayer of thanks and gratitude to them. They have enabled us to live this wonderful life.

I have had lots of wonderful moments and events, but I must say that whenever the girls and grandkids come home it is the greatest.

And having good friends come help us brand and do other things that we need to ask help for. Those are special times.

Definitely it is important to share our stories. The urban population is ignorant to what all the things we do to benefit them. We can’t blame them for that. We have done a poor job of telling our story. I have been very involved with the wolf issue in California. I went to the first CA Fish and Game Commission hearings on listing the wolf as endangered in California. This is over and above the Federal listing. The propaganda I heard was scary and astonishing. There are a lot of people out there that want to get us off the land. Somehow, we need to get our stories out there. We are important for the survival of our nation.

If ranch life is calling you, I say go for it. Be the best you can be. If something is worth doing, it’s worth doing well. Be prepared to have setbacks. Realize that life isn’t always fair. Remember that the opportunities you have today are far greater than your great- grandmother’s were. You still have to work hard.

Take time to appreciate your blessings. Never give up. And be like Ginger Rogers….she did everything Fred Astaire did, only in high heels and backwards.

A Second Look at Breeding Soundness Exams Sarah P. Hummel, DVM Special to Nevada Rancher Magazine

Breeding soundness exams are performed on a bull battery generally in the late fall or early spring prior to bull-buying season.

These exams are designed to find non-fertile or sub-fertile bulls and identify the bulls that will efficiently breed your cows. They are not only for young bulls going to a sale, but it is a good idea to evaluate your bulls prior to every breeding season to screen for physical and reproductive problems.

Nationally, approximately 5-10% of MATURE breeding bulls will fail a breeding soundness exam prior to breeding season due to non-fertility or subfertility. In the Northern Nevada area, I have found bull batteries that have a breeding soundness fail rate ranging from 2%-12%. That means a bull that has passed a breeding soundness exam prior, is still subject to fail as a mature bull.

It is not always a problem with the sperm, though I have tested several bulls in northern Nevada that were good looking bulls, have passed a prior breeding soundness exam and were currently producing zero sperm. Not a one. Other bulls produce sperm but over 70% of these sperm had such screwed up tails that there was no way they were going to make it to the egg.

Other problems I have found in this area specifically are damage to the penis or prepuce that would make it impossible for the bull to do its job, such as adhesions from the penis onto the sheath, or lameness’s and foot problems that would render that bull way less likely to get a cow bred than its non-lame counterpart.

Failing a breeding soundness exam does not

mean that your bull can’t possibly breed a cow, it means that they are substantially less efficient at getting cows bred. These sub-par bulls are then competing with potentially more efficient bulls, which can affect the pregnancy rate and essentially your bottom line.

For example, if you run a bull battery comprised of 10 bulls responsible to breed 250 cows (25 each) and one bull is lagging behind because he is not producing any semen leaving potentially 15 open cows (because there were some real go-getters able to compensate for some of the other guy’s short-comings).

That would drop a herd pregnancy rate from 95% to a staggering 89% (250 * 95% = 238 bred cows, minus 15 cows results in 223/250 bred which is 89%). Let’s take another example and say in the same scenario a bull had 70% tail defects. That bull could probably still get some cows pregnant, but instead of his allotted 25, he is only able to breed 20 (which is highly optimistic). That would decrease the herd pregnancy rate from 95% to 93%.

This isn’t as dramatic but still takes a huge chunk out of your bottom line. So if you could wean an additional 5 out of 250 head, you would have paid for the breeding soundness exam of the entire bull battery 10 times over again with my clinic.

The cost of a breeding soundness exam more than makes up for what you will save at pregnancy check and it is a great way to refine your herd and your herd management.

The University of Nevada Reno’s College of Agriculture, Biotechnology, and Natural Resources with financial support from the USDA Risk Management Agency and local sponsors hosted the 2020 Cattlemen’s Update at locations including Reno, Sierra Valley, California, Fallon, Elko, Wellington, Ely, and Winnemucca and via interactive video in Logandale, Caliente, Tonopah, Lovelock, and Eureka the 6th through 10th of January.

The Cattlemen’s Update is an annual educational program designed to provide cattle producers’ current information about important management practices and issues that may affect the efficiency, productivity profitability, and sustainability of their businesses.

Leo McDonnell from Midland Bull Test gave great information on the RFI (Real feed Index), which is being tested in bulls and how it can have a huge impact on your bottom line.

The afternoon in Elko started off with a fascinating tutorial on virtual fencing by Dr. Paul Meiman, Extension Specialist, Livestock-Wildlife Interactions of UNR. This technology is not readily available in the United States yet but has been used some in Australia. It is similar to the invisible dog fence with the possibility

of it being operated by solar power. Cattle wear a collar that uses a combination of audible and shock cues to influence behavior.

The “fence” is radio frequencies to create a boundary. When cattle enter the boundary, an audible tone is issued. Once they attempt to cross the boundary, a shock is emitted. Researchers are finding

that the cattle learn quickly what the audible tone means. This technology may give producers the opportunity to graze target species at optimum times of grown, to graze fire breaks, or even for grazing after fire damage.

Currently, this practice is not readily available to producers, and most likely cost prohibited. More

Bill Dale explains that beef demand is strong. Consumers continue to crave beef. Education is the best tool we have to promote beef! research is being done.

Next, Mozart Fonseca, PHD discussed epigenetics. In biology, epigenetics is the study of heritable phenotype changes that do not involve alterations in the DNA sequence. The Greek prefix epi in epigenetics implies features that are “on top of ” or “in addition to” the traditional genetic basis for inheritance.

Epigenetics most often involves changes that affect gene activity and expression, but the term can also be used to describe any heritable phenotypic change. Such effects on cellular and physiological phenotypic traits may result from external or environmental factors or be part of normal development. The standard definition

of epigenetics requires these alterations to be heritable in the progeny of either cells or organisms. Fonseca explained how the use of epigenetics can affect cattle growth and production.

This year’s Keynote Speaker was Leo McDonnell of Columbus, Montana and Midland Bull Test.

He explained that frame size of cattle does not matter in beef production. He strongly believes that the animal must fit its environment and that the RFI (Residual Feed Intake) Index is the best selection tool we have when selecting replacement cattle for our herds. RFI is the measure of feed intake needed for maintenance and production.

Steve Foster, Associate Professor and Extension educator, presented a Market Outlook and Regulatory Update for the 2020 beef industry. utilization indexed within a group of cattle. A negative number is more efficient than a positive number. While RFI is not a standalone efficiency indicator, it needs to be balanced with production traits, it allows you to look at a large group of bulls of various weights, gain, and feed conversions to find your most efficient animal.

The Nevada Beef Council updated attendees on their Meat Substitutes Research and Strategy. Beef consumption has risen by 4 pounds per capita since 2015 and continues to rise. Even though the price of beef continues to rise, demand continues to rise

with it.

Even though celebrities influence markets, they aren’t impacting beef. Vegan stars aren’t recruiting more people to a vegan lifestyle. Beef substitute growth at retail is still growing but has slowed drastically. While people are trying meat substitutes, they are still eating meat!

The health industry has been the biggest ally when it comes to deterring plant-based proteins like fake meats. Beef is clearly one of the top sources of protein in our diets. The percentage of vegans and vegetarians are as low as they have ever been!

The good news of the

afternoon was delivered by Extension Educator Steve Foster, University Nevada Cooperative Extension, Pershing County. The 2020 Cattle Outlook is good. Cow numbers for 2020 are slightly lower than 2019 and fewer calves at the market make for slightly better prices than in 2019.

The quarterly feeder steer prices for 2020 are projected at: $140 in the first quarter, $142 in the second quarter, and $147 in the third quarter. It is assumed that exports for beef, pork, chicken, and turkey will all establish new all-time highs. Great things are going to happen in 2020!

Increasing Wildfire Awareness in Rural Communities Nevada Rangeland Resources Commission Special to Nevada Rancher Magazine

In 2018 rangeland wildfires burned thousands of acres in Nevada including several “megafires” of 1000,000 acres or larger. Those blazes included the 436,000 acre (approximately 680 square miles) Martin Fire and 233,000 acre (365 square miles) South Sugarloaf Fire. In 2019 the acreage burned was considerably less, but the threat remains.

While the media across the West reported the size of the fires and that “no structures were burned”, usually lacking in media coverage was the impact on ranchers and rural communities.

In 2019 the Nevada Rangeland Resources Commission approved significant funding to increase urban Nevadan’s awareness of the impact wildfires have, not only on the public lands habitat, but also ranch families, rural communities and wildlife.

NRRC will continue with their successful use of television documentaries, advertising and social media to promote public land ranching in 2020. They have approved funding for a new documentary on wildfire currently in production and scheduled to air in 2020. The new, made

Looking down from 30,000 feet on Nevada’s craggy, arid landscape doesn’t evoke an image of what most people think of as rangeland.

But this vast and seemingly desolate place as viewed from five miles high actually supports a vital and healthy livestock industry. In an environment which receives an average 7.5 inches of precipitation a year, careful and constant management of these particular rangelands is crucial.

More than 85 percent of Nevada is managed by the federal government under the supervision of the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Forest Service, and the military. Because private land is very limited, ranchers need to use some of these public lands, as well as their own, for grazing herds of cattle and sheep. Ranchers are given an allotment and a predetermined number of livestock are allowed to graze at a per-head fee.

Pass. All contributed significant time to the filming efforts. Golden Productions, a Reno and San Diego based video production company was approved to continue to produce NRRC’s television and social media efforts.

Emerging Technologies Impacting Ranching Industry Dave Voth Special to Nevada Rancher Magazine

When cell phones first became popular many people swore that they would never use them. Fast forward to 2020, it is a rare exception to meet someone that doesn’t have and use a cell phone on a regular basis.

A similar aversion to new technology has too often put the beef industry and land management behind the times. The Nevada Section of the Society for Range Management attempted to tackle this technology phobia and put on a oneday workshop on Dec. 13 on emerging technologies specifically for ranchers and agency folks.

Technology can be one of the most frustrating parts of any job. The workshop created a low-stress learning environment where attendees could start at their own skill level and walk away with new skills that would help in their everyday work environment.

The day started with brief introductions to four mapping technologies: Google Earth, Web Soil

Survey, Rangeland Analysis Platform (RAP), and Climate Engine. This diverse selection was chosen so that there would be something for everyone. Beginners and technological pros alike were able to learn something new.

Pete Mori of the Mori Ranch said, “Coming from someone who is not very ‘tech-savvy’ I found these tools to be user-friendly and feel it was time well spent to attend. The instructors were very helpful, knowledgeable, and available to answer questions.”

The presentations gave a general overview of what each product can accomplish. The real value of the workshop came after the presentations; each presenter held a hands-on training session. The event was held in the Great Basin College Computer Lab, and each attendee had access to a computer where they could build a map of whatever they found to be most helpful.

continue to utilize social media as an important tool to expand the public land rancher message. In the first quarter of 2020, NRRC will launch another social media campaign on Facebook to appeal to a younger audience. Hosts selected for the series will once again, be young Nevadans with ranching backgrounds. The young hosts, Lewis Mendive and Katlyn Uhart, will primarily address public land rancher’s concerns about wildfire.

In 2019 they hosted 3

segments on Facebook that covered the need for management of wild horses.

Those segments prompted hundreds of responses allowing further response and dialogue supporting rancher’s management solutions to the problem.

All the social media segments can be viewed on the NRRC website by clicking the menu item “advertising campaigns.”

Happy BEEF month! The Elko County CattleWomen are always looking for ways to help promote and share our love for the beef industry with our community.

It has become tradition for us to host a booth at the Elko County Health and Wellness Fair during this time of year. We help

promote the many health and wellness benefits that come with eating beef. In years past we have offered fun trivia and giveaways at our booth that have become very popular with our community.

Nevada Beef Council Update – February 2020 What’s the Deal With Meat Alternatives?

Nevada Beef Council Staff Last month, members of the Nevada Beef Council staff joined the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension for its annual Cattlemen’s Update tour. It was great

to get back out in the country and see a few faces we have not seen in a while.

As part of the tour, our team shared an update on the issue of

meat alternatives, including some of the research behind them, and what’s being done to address the issue. After all, there was a lot of hype about this particular issue in 2019, with Burger King becoming one of the latest burger chains in the U.S. to announce it would begin selling a plant-based burger. Announcements such as these caused many to wonder what the impact would be to the beef industry.

As the NBC was pleased to share during the Cattlemen’s Update tour, the ramifications are not quite what you’d expect given the amount of media attention you’ve seen given to these products. When it comes down to it, Americans still love their beef, especially burgers.

Even with the introduction of new plant-based meat substitutes, beef consumption has been on the rise in recent years, with

the USDA predicting that U.S. consumers will have eaten 7.1% in 2019 than in 2015. And this isn’t a new trend – retail beef demand has continued to increase during the past 7 years, with demand up 15 percent since January of 2012.

Still, with more restaurants and stores seeming to offer plantbased alternative proteins to give their consumers greater variety

fire-roasted, seeded, peeled and chopped ■ 1/2 cup reduced-sodium beef broth ■ 1 medium jalapeno pepper, diced ■ 1 tablespoon chili powder ■ 1 teaspoon ground cumin ■ 1/2 teaspoon roasted ground coriander ■ 1/2 ounce 70% dark chocolate, broken into pieces

Cooking Instructions:

1. Combine Rub ingredients in a spice grinder. Pulse on and off until grind has sand-like consistency. Set aside.

Cook’s Tip: You may substitute 1/8 teaspoon ground white pepper for 1/4 teaspoon white peppercorns.

2. Preheat large cast iron skillet on medium-high heat for 5 minutes. Add pancetta; cook 7 to 10 minutes until crisp, stirring occasionally. Using a slotted spoon, remove pancetta; set aside. Pour excess oil from pan. Return same skillet to heat; add onion and garlic. Reduce heat to medium; cook 3 to 5 minutes until onions are translucent, stirring often. Stir in pancetta, beans, tomatoes, poblanos, broth, jalapeno, chili powder, cumin and coriander. Reduce heat to low; simmer 15 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add chocolate during last 5

As we shared during the tour, when you look at the total market share of these meat alternatives, they don’t stack up to beef. Comparing the market share of beef versus beef substitutes, beef maintains 99.5 percent market share compared to just 0.5 percent for the substitutes.

And when looking at those consumers who are frequently eating meat alternatives, research shows they are still eating a variety of other meat proteins, including a consistent level of beef as the average consumer. In fact, according to checkoff-funded research, 24 percent of consumers report eating meat alternatives weekly or more.

Yet among those consumers, 67 percent still eat beef weekly – a number consistent with the average consumer. So while these consumers might be replacing other meatless meals with these meat alternatives (i.e., instead of having a salad, eating a plant-based burger), they don’t appear to be replacing their beef meals with meat alternatives.

Despite the fact that beef demand and consumption remain strong, the Beef Checkoff and State Beef Councils (SBCs) such as ours are still taking proactive measures to keep beef in the consumer forefront and position it as one of the world’s most desirable proteins.

There’s a lot of good news to share when it comes to beef. First off, producers are constantly looking for new ways to produce more beef with fewer resources. In fact, today, U.S. beef farmers and ranchers are able to produce the same amount of beef with one-third fewer cattle than they did in 1977 – a fact that is shared through a variety of consumer marketing and education efforts.

Beef ’s nutrition is another positive story; the Beef Checkoff and State Beef Councils (SBCs) work with dietitians and physicians regularly to educate them on the health benefits of including beef in an everyday diet. The checkoff-funded Beef. It’s What’s For Dinner. brand serves as a consumer resource dedicated to educating individuals through webinars, seminars, fact sheets, cooking lessons, nutrition research and more on the ways beef contributes to a healthy lifestyle.

And the Beef. It’s What’s For Dinner. brand has proven effective in influencing consumers. The checkoff-funded Consumer Beef Tracker shows that when people are aware of the brand, they’re more likely to feel positive about beef and eat beef more often.

Much is still on the horizon when it comes to alternative proteins, but together, we will continue to identify ways to position beef as the number one protein choice amongst consumers and drive demand for beef.

Three Envelope Slow Cooker Roast Jennifer Whiteley Nevada Rancher Magazine

One of my favorite items in my kitchen is my slow cooker. I like it so much, I bought 2, and in a pinch, my electric pressure cooker can be used as a 3rd slow cooker.

While I haven’t simultaneously used all 3 at the same time, I have thought about it a time or two! On busy days I have been known to use 2 slow cookers. Like those cold, snowy, late December pregging days when you need to feed a crew!

The Whiteley household is in full on wrestling mode now, like many of our ranching friends. Wrestling is such an amazing sport for young cowboys (and cowgirls!) as it develops mental and

physical toughness. Our boys have grown so much since we started wrestling when TR was 4, and I am so proud of who they are becoming. I never thought I would be a wrestling mom but here I am, packing snacks, videoing every match, and cheering them on until I am hoarse.

I find myself using my slow pressure cooker much more frequently this time of year. Between working all day, and wrestling and rodeo practice 4 nights a week, it sure is nice to come home late to a warm house that smells like dinner is almost ready! Honestly, there is something comforting about a pot roast with potatoes, onions, and carrots.

This is one of our favorite recipes. It’s easy, it tastes good, and it is a one pot meal!

Instructions:

THREE ENVELOPE SLOW COOKER ROAST

Ingredients: ■ 1 envelope of brown gravy ■ 1 envelope of dry Italian Dressing ■ 1 envelope of Lipton’s Onion Soup Mix ■ 1 Beef Roast

■ Put the roast in the slow cooker with some cut up potatoes, carrots and onions.

■ Sprinkle the contents of all three envelopes on top – don’t worry about being even or equal just throw it on.

■ Pour over 2 cups of water or chicken broth.

■ Put the lid on and turn it on high for 6 hours or low for 8-9 hours.

ell, we are hunkered down for what seems like another long winter. When a feller gets a wee bit long in the tooth, it seems, they get longer? However, there is sunshine on the horizon; it’s really sad when the temperature goes from 7 degrees and windy to 27 and sunny and you think it’s global warming!

An ol cowboy friend of mine told me if you can make it to February 18; you had made it thought the winter and it was all downhill from there. We’ll see; he’s also the one who told me I should drink 8 glasses of water to rehydrate my body and it was best to do just before you go to bed?

I highly recommend you do not follow these instructions. Another of his quotes; “Behind every successful horse trainer is a wife who has a good job in tow.” Now that I believe.

I am toiling over a new key board early this morning with limited success and very little speed. My dilemma all started a couple of days ago, when I spilt a wee bit of wine on the old key board, that’s when I thought I’d became a computer expert. The first thing I found out was mine was not spill proof!

Second, do not ever think you can take the back off and dry it out.

This was a kind of a one-sided conversation, so I said to break the ice, “that’s a nice lookin shirt your wearing.”

He gave me a glare that would back a wolf off a gut pile. “It a Wrangler” he said, with irritation, “so is these pants, an see them boots, Wrangler too, an inside the boots, I’m wearin Wrangler socks.”

For the past 3 years in Winnemucca, Outlaw Broncs, have hosted a wild way to ring in the new year! The rodeo is produced by the Jones Family — Jess, Katie and their 3 sons. The bronc bash originated in Spring Creek, NV. Cowboys and cowgirls from all around come to try their hand at winning.

This year in addition to money payouts winners received custom rifles donated by the Garijo Family at C.B Browns and custom jackets.
