Letter from the Mayor

Greetings, On behalf of our citizens, the City Council and Mayor’s Office, we welcome you to Fernley!

Fernley presents an attractive, friendly, small-town lifestyle with no corporate, personal income, unitary, or inventory taxes. Located just 30 minutes from the Reno-Sparks metropolitan area, Fernley is home to the 5,000 acre Crossroads Commerce Center as a location that is fully prepared for a wide variety of businesses. With an abundance of industrial/office/commercial space and immediate proximity to major interstates and railroad access, there are new opportunities and many reasons for businesses to move to Fernley.

Fernley is located in Lyon County at the confluence of three other counties: Churchill, Washoe and Storey. Highway 95 (north & south) terminates in Fernley and therefore provides quick and easy access to Interstate 80 (east and west) and Highway 50 (east and west) to access central Nevada.

Fernley is literally in the heart of all the activities and excitement that is abundant in northern Nevada.

Lyon County schools provide great opportunities for our youth to receive the best education possible.

Academically, our students are performing at or above the levels of students in the surrounding urban and suburban school districts.

On the residential front, the population of Fernley grew 120% from 2000 through 2006, according to the Nevada State Demographer. Whether it is in the form of apartments or condominiums, traditional single family homes or farm, ranch or horse property, Fernley is a great place to live, work and play. The City of Fernley is one of the safest in the region, as a community, we all know that working together and character counts, and that we need to make sure that all our neighborhoods are living up to their highest potential. Thanks to a city-wide effort, whether it be Neighborhood Watch, the schools, our corporate neighbors, or the many fraternal and civic organizations, we are pulling together to put Fernley’s best foot forward.

Fernley: A great place to do business

Growth and a changing economy due to the “Tesla Effect,” combined with Fernley’s proximity to Reno/Sparks and its easy access to shipping routes throughout the western United States, makes Fernley an ideal location to do business.

Located just 15 minutes from the rapidly expanding Tahoe Reno Industrial Center and 30 minutes from Reno-Sparks, Fernley is in the beginning stages of a renaissance that is projected to bring more than 10,000 new residents over the next 10 years.

In the first quarter of 2006, Fernley was the fastest growing city in the United States on a per capita percentage basis, but the area was one of the hardest hit by the Great Recession that started in 2007.

But the arrival of Tesla and other major industry to the TRIC and around western Nevada, as well as dozens of ancillary businesses, has reenergized the area, making Fernley a prime location to live, work and play, and to do business.

“The business climate is fantastic due to affordable real estate market and major industry coming our direction with the Tesla effect,” Fernley Chamber of Commerce

president Kelly Brye said. “There may never have been a better time to operate a business in Fernley than now.”

Brye’s point is illustrated by the influx of major business and industry already moving into the Fernley market. In 2016, Deceuninck of North America opened a 150,000 square foot manufacturing plant on Nevada Pacific Blvd, with plans for more than 100 employees.

Deceuninck is a PVC extrusion company based in Belgium that is known worldwide for producing energy efficient vinyl window and door systems. The company ships products around the world to Mexico, Canada and even to southeast Asia. Deceuninck is one of the top companies in this sector in Europe and has almost 3,000 employees worldwide.

“We wanted a lot with a rail spur for sustainability and ease of getting raw materials into the plant, we wanted a good labor force especially from the local community and surrounding area,” President and CEO

Filip Geeraet said. “Once we met with Mayor (Roy) Edgington and his staff, we were sold.”

Last summer, Fernley’s first new car dealership, Fernley Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, opened its doors on East Newlands Ave. Reno Dodge owner Don Weir said he had his eye on opening a dealership in Fernley for several years, but corporate officials from Detroit were more interested in Fallon.

Then, after Tesla’s announcement that it was coming to TRIC, corporate officials visited Fernley, and soon after, construction began on a new car lot in Fernley.

“In a rural community like Fernley people want to do business in their town,” Weir said. “I think the community is going to see tremendous growth over the next 10 years.”

Edgington said Fernley’s location, close to TRIC, Reno/Sparks and accessibility to the, and on raio and highway shipping routes, makes it the perfect place for manufacturers.

“Our location makes us ideal for the entire West Coast and the Pacific Rim,” Edgington said. “I think this region is changing economically from traditional mining and gaming and now we’re seeing warehousing, industry and tech. Businesses can take advantage of emerging tech and manufacturing coming here.”

The growth the area is already beginning to see also provides a perfect climate for business, Brye said.

“Fernley is a great place to conduct business because marketing is done the old fashioned way,” he said. “Due to the absence of major media advertising, true marketing success in Fernley comes from sincere community involvement and maintaining strong relationships with fellow business operators and neighbors.”
