When you think of the Community House, what comes to mind? As I reflect on the past year, I am reminded of the countless ways we’ve touched lives and helped create lasting memories for so many in our community.

For some of you, the Community House is where your child found their voice, stepping onto the stage with newfound confidence. For others, it’s the place where you spent Saturday mornings cheering on your child’s basketball team, enjoying that shared moment with other parents. Or perhaps your family joined us for one of our events—Children’s Theatre of Winnetka performances, our Rock the Garden summer concerts, activities on a school day off, or the inspiring Home Tour organized by the Woman’s Board.

No matter what memories stand out for you, I hope they share a common theme: a sense of belonging. Because at its core, that’s what the Community House is all about. It’s not just a venue or a set of programs; it’s a place where we come together to celebrate, explore, and connect.

As you read through this report, I invite you to look beyond the numbers. Each hour of programming, each workout in the fitness center, each special event and performance—they all illustrate our commitment to creating meaningful shared experiences and serving as a vibrant hub for our community.

You are an important part of that commitment. As an independent non-profit that relies on community support rather than tax dollars, we are especially grateful to you, our generous donors. I am also incredibly fortunate to work alongside our Board of Governors and the Woman’s Board: dedicated, thoughtful, and creative volunteers who help to lead and support this beloved organization.

Thanks to all of you, we are able to serve this community in ever-expanding ways, while investing in maintaining the beautiful, historic building that is our shared home. Thanks to you, we can continue to do our part to make Winnetka and the North Shore such a special place to live.

THE COMMUNITY HOUSE MISSION is to serve as a gathering place for all and inspire lifelong learning, personal growth, and community spirit through enjoyable, engaging activities and meaningful shared experiences.

OUR VALUES

Belonging: We affirm that all are welcome here and are committed to being a place of inclusion and belonging for all people, of all identities, at every stage of life.

Connection: We bring people together as part of the core of who we are, whatever the activity.

Service: We are committed to responding to evolving community interests, needs, and feedback.

Creativity: We provide opportunities for personal creativity and growth and strive for an innovative spirit in all we do.

Independence: As a non-profit, the Community House relies on charitable contributions to support its operations; it receives no funding from your local taxes or the Village of Winnetka.

Over 1,900 children collectively spent more than 52,000 hours at the Community House last year, learning teamwork and expanding their skills through our popular youth basketball house league and youth sports programs, finding their confidence and star power through Skyline Children’s Theater productions and our School of Dance, exploring the world through our early childhood classes, and SO MUCH MORE!

Children’s Theatre of Winnetka entertained audiences with Mary Poppins and The Music Man and celebrated their 50th anniversary of fabulous musical theater performances at the Community House.

Fitness Center members came in for 69,304 workouts, making use of our cardio and strength equipment, one-onone personal training sessions, new Group Fitness classes, and updated recovery equipment to achieve their goals.

FINANCIAL SUMMARY

July 1, 2023-June 30, 2024

The Woman’s Board and Junior Board engaged over 120 volunteers and raised over $181,000 through extraordinary events that brought the community together while supporting the House.

We hosted 57 celebrations of milestones and life events, including 29 weddings for couples who made treasured memories in our beautiful garden as they embarked on a new life together.

Families came together to laugh and bond at Family Bingo Night and a variety of other events featuring the wonder of magic, the thrill of BMX bike acrobatics, and the joy of live music.

Over 150 children’s birthday parties were gleefully celebrated with more than 2,500 happy children in attendance.

Over 175 units of life-saving blood were donated through blood drives facilitated by the American Red Cross.

Over 100 groups – ranging from nonprofit organizations to local businesses–chose the Community House as their home for meetings, seminars, and special gatherings.

Unlike a tax-supported park district or library, the independent, non-profit Community House is unique – literally supported by the members of the very community it serves. Every activity, performance, and gathering that takes place in the House is made possible by donations from community members who sustain this vital organization’s mission.
