Founded in 1911, the Community House is a non-profit organization offering sports / fitness, performing arts, and educational programming for all ages. This historic building features a modern fitness center, theater, gymnasium, multi-purpose spaces, and a beautiful garden.

As an independent 501(c)(3), we receive no tax dollars and rely on donations, memberships, and program fees. The Community House is proud to have served generations of Winnetka and North Shore families.

Members and Non-Members from Winnetka and surrounding communities are welcome to participate in any of our classes, programs, lectures, and events.

MISSION STATEMENT

The Community House mission is to serve as a gathering place for all and inspire lifelong learning, personal growth, and community spirit through enjoyable, engaging activities and meaningful shared experiences.

Formed in 1976, The Woman’s Board supports our mission by contributing critical funds to our operating budget each year through its fundraising efforts. This special party features balloon art by the Magic Team of Gary Kantor. Your talented balloon artist will create classics such as dogs, butterflies, swords, giraffes and much more!

Each theme party package is $325 for 1 1/2 hours (unless otherwise noted) for up to 20 children with $5 for each additional guest. The packages include 45-60 minutes of entertainment/ instruction.

Magic & Music Party

Age 5-12

This show is an interactive blend of magic with music, games, and contests. Our child-friendly magical performance includes many opportunities for children to help with the tricks!

Mini Ninja Warrior Party

Age 3-7

The ultimate party theme for any Nerf battle loving kid! Coaches facilitate different styles of play to ensure everyone is involved and having fun.

All equipment (incl. eye protection) will be provided. $325 for up to 15 guests; More than 15 guests require a second instructor with additional cost.

Pamper Me Spa Retreat

Age 6-12

Come join Glitzy Girlz for a day of pampering! Each child receives a pedicure and manicure complete with soaking, scrubbing, buffing, and polishing of nails and toes. As an added bonus, guests take home an awesome pampering kit!

Rock Diva Glam Jam

Age 6-12

Come join Glitzy Girlz for a rockin’ good time! Each child will receive a “Rock” makeover complete with make-up, sparkles, and clip-in hair extensions in fun neon colors! The party will have a fabulous dance finale. $400 for up to 8 guests; $500 for 9-14 guests; $550 for 15-20 guests

Sports Party

Age 4 & Up

Leap, hop, skip, and run your way through obstacles and put your Ninja skills to the test! This fun, movement-based party will challenge guests to maneuver over and under objects.

What do you get when you cross the Olympic games with scooters, hula-hoops, and balloons? You get Wacky Relays! Loads of fun for all your guests.

Thanksgiving Break: Basketball Camp

This camp will feature drills that focus on ball handling, passing, hand/eye coordination, defense, and shooting skills. It will also feature over 10 drills that the players can do at home. The session will conclude with scrimmages. Players will be grouped by age and should bring their own ball.

Winter Break: Basketball Camp

Our Winter Break Camp will hit on all facets of the game, including guard/post development, defense, plyometrics, hand-eye coordination, footwork, dribbling, basketball cuts, screen and roll situations, learning the art of the jumpshot, game situations, and building a basketball IQ so players can make quick, smart decisions on the court. The Hoops4Health staff can’t wait to share their knowledge of the game over the holidays!

Meet Your Fitness Center Trainers!

Bob Davis

Bob has been assisting members of the Community House Fitness Center in reaching their fitness goals since 2001. Bob enjoys working with seniors and teens as well as those with special needs including rehabilitation. Helping those in the gym complements Bob’s career in sports media that has taken him to multiple NFL Super Bowls, and the NCAA Basketball Final Four. Bob is certified through the International Sports Science Association.

Dolores Ohlwein

Dolores has been assisting members of the Community House Fitness Center in reaching their fitness goals since 1991. She enjoys helping clients maintain a healthy lifestyle by using: functional training, core/balance exercises, weight training, weight bearing exercises, and stretching. She is certified through the Idea International Association of Fitness Professionals with an emphasis in exercise and aging.

Chris Treiber

Chris has been assisting members of the Community House Fitness Center in reaching their fitness goals since 1996. His specializations are training for strength, functional movement, balance, and older adult populations. Chris is certified through the American Council on Exercise, the Functional Aging Institute (Functional Aging Specialist) and the Gray Institute (Applied Functional Science).

Edwin Ventura

Edwin is a NASM certified personal trainer as well as a USA licensed Boxing Coach. He grew up in Waukegan playing soccer for 15 years before switching to boxing for the last 6 years. He enjoys training a wide range of clients for performance, general health, and weight loss. Edwin also holds a Performance Enhancement Specialty Certification through the National Academy of Sports Medicine, which enables him to train athletes to reach their full conditioning potential.

GROUP FITNESS CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

Yoga Flow All levels yoga flow class.

Gentle Yoga Simple sequences and slower paced movements make this a great class for beginner to intermediate yogis as well as advanced yogis looking for recovery.

Mindful Movements Mindful breathing combines with active and passive poses to tone, rejuvenate, and relax.

Strength Bootcamp Build strength, increase lean muscle mass, and have fun in this resistance based exercise class.

Knockout High intensity boxing strength and cardio circuits led by a former competitive boxer will get your heart pumping.

Cardio HIIT High Intensity Interval Training (H.I.I.T) featuring cardio, plyometric, and full body strength moves that will keep your heart pumping! Modifications will be shown.

Strength Circuit Build muscle in this timed, station-based strength workout.

TRX Circuit Suspension training that uses bodyweight exercises to develop strength, balance, and core stability combined with floor exercises in this total body workout.

HIGH Fitness Old school aerobics transformed into a modern, heart pounding, fun and effective workout. Cardio and toning meet leg warmers with a side of air guitar!

WERQTM Dance Fitness

WERQTM is the wildly addictive cardio dance workout based on trending pop and hip hop music.

Yoga-lates

This combination of Pilates moves and yoga poses will strengthen and lengthen muscles and help create a lean, toned look.

Fencing

The Olympic sport of fencing demands a blend of tactical and strategic thought and a physical execution of those decisions. This has led many to describe the sport as “physical chess.” Fencing also teaches balance and discipline and even more than this, it’s fun! This class is for those new to fencing or those who would like to work on the basic skills. This class will cover basic rules, etiquette, basic footwork, attacks and defenses. Karate emphasizes the principles and applications of a weaponless self-defense through the use of body dynamics and mental discipline. Participants learn alertness, self-control, and mental strategies. There are 11 belt levels (kyu) before first-degree Black belt (shodan). A new student is assigned the White belt rank (eleventh kyu). Students must fulfill specific requirements in a test environment for promotion up to and including the Black belt (dan). Celeste is an early childhood movement, music, and yoga teacher at the Community House, and has taught throughout the North Shore for over 35 years. She has worked with the Old Town School of Folk Music, National-Louis University and Gorton Community Center in Lake Forest. Celeste’s interactive Everybody Move Inc. classes cultivate play, imagination and fun!

Daniel Rosa, “Teacher Dan”

A graduate of Loyola Academy, Dan is a talented multi-instrumentalist and popular teacher of piano, violin, guitar, bass guitar, banjo, mandolin, percussion, and voice at the Community House. Everybody Move Inc.

This class offers a playful and enriching time for you and your child to sing and dance! The beginning of the class provides freeplay and gathering time to allow for socialization and interaction. The structured part of the class explores gross motor, fine motor, language development, and musical listening skills. This class is the perfect balance between child-centered instruction and supported imaginative play. Meet Your Early Childhood Teachers

Ola Muszynki

Ola brings over 21 years of preschool experience to the Community House, previously teaching toddlers through junior kindergarteners at Winnetka Public Nursery School. She believes that play is the foundation for all learning, helping children become curious, explore and discover new things, and build relationships with others!

Elyse Ferdinand

Elyse previously taught preschool at Adler Schools in Chicago – but has been teaching various early childhood classes here at the Community House for over 25 years! She loves seeing children learn and grow through different activities each day.

Tiny Bits

Moms and tots, come play and learn as we see how much fun it is to be a toddler! We will have lots of exploring time plus an art project and ending the day with a story. An adult must accompany each child. No siblings are allowed. Please register your child; the accompanying adult is included.

Little Bits

The first 16 weeks of a puppy’s life is the optimal time for socialization. Proper socialization is crucial in developing a healthy, confident dog and strengthening the dog/ human bond. Dog Obedience Puppy

Puppy Class provides a positive environment for socialization of puppies and people alike! Early socialization has been shown to greatly reduce the incidence of both human-directed aggression and dog-ondog aggression, as well as anxiety and fear-based behavior problems. Canine Good Citizen Prep & Test

The Canine Good Citizen title is offered by the AKC, and can be attained by any dog regardless of breed or mix. All dogs must have basic obedience skills prior to taking this class. The test is on the last night of class. All items must be passed to earn the title.

THE TEST ITEMS ARE:

• Accepting a friendly stranger

• Sitting politely for petting

• Appearance and grooming: A friendly stranger examines the ears, front feet and run a brush down the dog’s back

• Walking on a loose lead

• Walking through a crowd

• Sit and down on command and staying in place

Gwendolyn Britt Ballet and Fantasy Dance

Gwendolyn has been teaching ballet and Fantasy Dance classes at the Community House for over 20 years. Her students learn proper ballet technique in an encouraging atmosphere. As a performer, Gwendolyn danced for the Lynda Martha Dance Company. She is a certified teacher with the Cecchetti Council of America. Gwendolyn is a graduate of the Indiana University School of Music with a BS in Ballet Education.

E. Marc Nevins Adult Ballet

Marc is a dancer with nearly 20 years of performing experience including appearances with American Ballet Theatre, Joffrey Ballet, Ballet West, and Evanston Concert Ballet. Marc studied at the University of Utah, Interlochen Arts Academy, School of American Ballet in New York, and with Maria Tallchief in Chicago.

Kateryna Suvorova Hip Hop

Kateryna has been teaching Hip Hop since 2019 and has worked with all ages and levels! She loves helping her students to build confidence and enjoy the process of trying and learning new things.

Aaron Umsted Tap & Musical Theatre Jazz

Aaron is the Artistic Director of Children’s Theatre of Winnetka. His local theatre credits include productions with the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, Northwestern University, Paramount Theatre, Drury Lane Oakbrook, and Marriott Theatre. He has also toured North America in the Broadway companies of A Chorus Line, Disney’s Mary Poppins, and Anything Goes. Aaron holds a BFA in Musical Theatre from the University of Oklahoma, and a M.Ed. in Theatre Pedagogy from Southeastern Oklahoma State University.

Brandon is a teacher of guitar at the Community House who tailors his lessons to the interests and goals of his students while stressing good technique and the fundamentals. He has written, performed, and recorded songs with such notable names as Jackson Browne, Victor DeLorenzo, Eric McFadden, and Jimmy Chamberlin. Brandon is currently director at the Glencoe Academy of Music.

Daniel Rosa, “Teacher Dan”

A graduate of Loyola Academy, Dan is a talented multi-instrumentalist and popular teacher of piano, violin, guitar, bass guitar, banjo, mandolin, percussion, and voice at the Community House. Dan is the founder of Music ‘n’ Me and Top Note Music Academy. A firm believer that music should be fun, Dan enjoys sharing his love of music with his students. He is a graduate of USC with a degree in music.

Students will write their own songs and dig deep into the craft of songwriting! Once the songs are written and arranged, they will be recorded and produced. Basic concepts like tracking, over-dubbing, and effects processing will be discussed. Upon completion, all students can share their songs on their favorite streaming services! Must bring an iPad to class. Prior experience playing a musical instrument or voice required.

Children’s Theatre of Winnetka (CTW)

Formed in 1974, Children’s Theatre of Winnetka (CTW) is an award-winning, volunteer organization dedicated to promoting theatrical experiences for children in grades 4-8 who reside or attend school in New Trier Township. Children, under adult supervision, learn all aspects of theatre production from stage management to performance. Students may participate both onstage or backstage in two productions annually in the fall and spring.

Broadway Tots: Moana Jr.

Young actors will follow an ocean voyage and sing along to enchanting tunes while experiencing the magic of theater. In play-based rehearsals Tots actors learn creative movement to songs from Moana Jr. Rehearsals are a fantasy adventure that sparks an early love for theater arts. All classes lead up to a final performance on stage; where actors are encouraged to dress up as their favorite character from the show. Gather your enthusiasm, bring your imagination, and make incredible memories!

The final show for the Wednesday Tots will be on May 7 and May 8.

About Skyline Children’s Theater

Skyline Children’s Theater is a mainstay at the Community House and is proud to teach children of all levels the fundamentals of acting. Jacqui Siegel, drama teacher, and Erica Zuhr, elementary school teacher, are the co-owners of Skyline Children’s Theater. Mrs. Siegel and Mrs. Zuhr have performed in and directed numerous plays throughout the Chicagoland area. Mrs. Siegel has worked with world-renowned casting directors in Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago. Together they bring their talents to Skyline Children’s Theater, excited to share their passion for the performing arts with the community.

Skyline Children’s Theater Policies

No make-up classes will be offered. Please help your child practice and memorize at home so your actor feels confident on stage. Please be prompt in arrival and dismissal times. All rehearsals are closed (no parents or guests watching). Actors are required to bring their scripts to every rehearsal. There will be no refunds after the first week of classes.

Classes may be prorated if you would like to enroll in a class after it has started, provided the instructor has space and allows for late registration. The supervisor must approve the prorated amount.

CANCELLATION OF CLASSES Register early! Prior to the start of any class, registration is reviewed to determine if the enrollment is sufficient to hold the class. Do not wait until the day of the first class to register or you may find the class has been canceled due to low enrollment.

EMERGENCY CLOSINGS

The Community House intends to keep its facilities and programs operating whenever possible. There are times, however, when weather, road conditions, or facility malfunctions dictate that programs and/or services must be canceled or temporarily postponed or entire facilities closed. In order to provide employees and patrons with a safe and secure environment in which to work and play, the Community House reserves the right to close a particular facility or cancel a program when deemed necessary.

The Community House makes every effort to avoid scheduling programs or events on religious holidays. Anyone affected will be offered the option of attending a session of the same program on a different date as a make-up, or receiving a prorated refund of the fee for the date missed.

GENERAL INFORMATION

The Community House is not responsible for the supervision of children on site prior to or remaining on site after the established program times. The Community House is handicapped accessible. If you or any member of your family has special needs, please see a staff member. The Community House receives no tax dollars. We are supported by our programs, fundraising events, our annual campaign, and donations.
