AT THE PICNICS JOEL MARSHALL

In a way, it was Darby day at Balnarring Balnarring Racing Club held their first meeting of the season last Sunday and marked the occasion with the unveiling of a wonderful mural of the late Darby McCarthy. Produced as a tribute to all of the indigenous participants in horse racing, the mural (as pictured below) was created by design business Five Creative and features the influential and inspirational McCarthy who won many Group 1 races through the 1950s and 60s and who was a trailblazer for indigenous sports stars in Australia. On the track, it was Cranbourne trainer Mick Bell and jockeys Jack Virgona and Leigh Taylor who shone with doubles apiece. Bell and Virgona kicked off the day in style when combining with the 10-yearold mare Solodka ($3.20) to claim a 2000-metre trophy race. The daughter of Helene Mascot only started racing in 2019. She won a maiden for Ron Smith in late 2020, had five starts for Eric Musgrove in 2021 and did not race again for 17 months until she resumed for Bell at Moe in December. Bell and Virgona teamed up again in race three, this time with the four-year-old Your Song gelding Talent Quest ($7) who broke his maiden at start 12.

Taylor bagged the first leg of his double on an old favourite in Angel Toff ($6). It was the 13th time he had ridden the eightyear-old Ron Stephens-trained gelding, and their sixth victory together. Taylor then teamed up with Mornington trainer Dean Krongold who got the Myboycharlie five-year-old Charlie’s Tin ($10) to win on debut for his stable. Carrying top weight of 70.5kg, Charlie’s Tin made it three wins from 13 starts when he resumed his campaign over 1200 metres. His two prior wins came over 2000 metres and 2350 metres for Matthew Williams.

King pair Jockey Caitlin King went within inches of joining the Balnarring double-getters, but did count a pair of wins across the weekend having been successful at Woolamai 24 hours earlier. Five weeks after King and the Rob Gillahan-trained Doctor Coto recorded an upset win ($11) over the Woolamai 1008-metre circuit, they were at it again, notching another clear-cut win this time at the more respected odds of $3. King had three thirds to go with her Woolamai win, then at Balnarring on Sunday went down narrowly aboard Luv A Duck (who was gallant with his 71kg) to

the Jamie Scott-trained Derugle Diamond ($13) who had the best brought out of her by Ray Douglas to notch her second win at start 32. King went one better in the final event when she and Chillydog ($5) came clear of their rivals to post a three-length win.

Reg rolling Reg Manning got on the board this picnic season when he trained a double at Woolamai on Saturday. The frustrating run of minor placings came to an end when the well-travelled Anything But ($12) delivered a knockout blow to punters in the third race. The seven-year-old son of Savabeel began his career in New Zealand with Mike Moroney, winning a maiden at Pukekohe before crossing the Tasman. He won another two races for the Moroney barn before an unsuccessful stint with Eric Musgrove that saw him finish last or second-last in 10 of his 11 runs. Manning got Anything But late last year after he had further unsuccessful stints with Adele Garraway and Paul and Tracey Templeton, and Saturday was his sixth run for Manning. He’s now won four from 48 in total. Manning and jockey Dylan Dean’s double was complete when Cheeky Prince, also at the juicy price of $12, notched his second win a little over 12 months since his maiden success at the track. Premiership-leading riders Shaun Cooper and Mel McDonald were also among the winners at Woolamai. McDonald won a maiden on the Glenn Thornell-trained Rivers Reward ($4.20) and Cooper sent favourite backers home happy when he saluted in the last on the Jack Laing-trained Silent Charge ($3).
