A COMMITMENT TO ART & ART MAKERS Our Programs and Instructors For over 80 years, WAG Studio has built a strong reputation for providing excellence in art instruction for children, teens, and adults. Classes incorporate current exhibitions with special tours, fostering a connection between the art on view in the galleries and the art created in the classrooms. All of our instructors have degrees and/or diplomas from universities or art colleges and many have master’s degrees and additional certification in education. While most work in private studios, instructors also bring experience as actors, administrators, art therapists, designers, and members of artist-run centres. For more information about our instructors, visit wag.ca/studio

Our Interim Location All art classes are currently offered on the Gallery’s lower level. Public access is down the ramp of the WAG building on Colony St. This interim location is in place as the WAG works to develop the Inuit Art Centre – a new building that will be connected to the Gallery on all levels. The Centre will expand art education with larger and more versatile spaces, providing a breathtaking new home for art classes, as well as the WAG’s celebrated collection of contemporary Inuit art and related programs. If you have questions, please contact: Rachel Baerg, Head of Education, at art-educator@wag.ca, or Diane Lafournaise, Manager of WAG Studio, at studioprograms@wag.ca Learn more about the Inuit Art Centre at inuit.wag.ca

SPRING ADULT ART CLASSES WAG Studio offers many ways to explore your creativity with beginner and intermediate courses in a variety of media. Unless otherwise indicated, adults provide their own tools and supplies for classes. Supply lists are handed out on the first day of class. For special workshops, supplies are generally included in the class cost.

New! Art and Nature 2

Mixed Media 1 and 3

Ages 7-9 • Use the raw elements of nature–plants, animals, earth, and sunshine–to inspire and create! There’s so much to explore and experience through drawing, painting, clay, and more. This mixed-media course will awaken the senses and develop an appreciation for the natural world.

Ages 5-6, 10-14 • Students will try out a variety of media that may include drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, or printmaking. Encouraging creativity, projects can be layered, mixed, and occasionally take more than one class to complete.

Drawing and Painting 1 and 3

Ages 11-16 • This mixed-media course inspired by grafitti art and urban street culture will help students develop their own personal artistic style. Activities include sharpie drawings, collage, block printing, stickers, wheat paste posters, stencils, and creating zines.

Ages 5-6, 10-14 • This course gives an introduction to basic techniques and fundamental concepts that artists use to create successful drawings and paintings. Students will build observational skills, exercise their imaginations, and visit WAG exhibitions.

Clayworks 2 and 3 Ages 7-9, 10-14 • Students will work on a series of functional and sculptural projects using different techniques to develop clay hand-building skills. Clay and related firing costs are included in the class fee.

Urban Art 3 and 4

NEW Impressionism for Kids 3

NEW Graphic Novel Studio 3

Ages 10-14 • Inspired by the WAG’s Summer with the Impressionists, step back in time to the Paris of artists Paul Cézanne, Marc Chagall, Edgar Degas, and Henri Matisse. Use a variety of media including drawing, painting, and collage in a number of expressive styles: Impressionism, Symbolism, Fauvism, Cubism, and Surrealism. Students will interpret what they see and then check out the work of these revolutionary artists in the galleries.

Ages 10-14 • Love reading comics? Love drawing? This graphic novel class allows students to explore the art of storytelling through their drawings. Students will develop their unique skills in sketching, writing short scripts, storyboarding, creating strong characters and the worlds they live in, and put their ideas on paper. Students will produce their own graphic novel or zine for personal or portfolio use.

PLEASE NOTE:
