A COMMITMENT TO ART AND ART MAKERS OUR PROGRAMS AND INSTRUCTORS For over 80 years, WAG Studio has built a strong reputation for providing excellence in art instruction for children, teens, and adults. Classes incorporate current exhibitions with special tours, fostering a connection between the art on view in the galleries and the art created in the classrooms.

All of our instructors have degrees and/or diplomas from universities or art colleges and many have master’s degrees and additional certification in education. While most work in private studios, instructors also bring experience as actors, administrators, art therapists, designers, and members of artist-run centres. For more information about our instructors, visit wag.ca/studio

OUR INTERIM LOCATION All art classes are currently offered on the Gallery’s lower level. Public access is down the ramp of the WAG building on Colony St. This interim location is in place as the Gallery works to develop the WAG Inuit Art Centre–a new building that will be connected to the Gallery on all levels. The Centre will expand art education with larger and more versatile spaces, providing a breathtaking new home for art classes, as well as the WAG’s celebrated collection of contemporary Inuit art and related programs.

If you have questions, please contact: Rachel Baerg Head of Education art-educator@wag.ca Diane Lafournaise Manager of WAG Studio studioprograms@wag.ca Learn more about the WAG Inuit Art Centre at inuit.wag.ca

DRAWING BASICS For students with little or no drawing experience, this introduction to the fundamental techniques and concepts of drawing will sharpen observation skills and build confidence. Practice translating what you see into what you draw as you work with different subjects, including still-life studies and the human form.

WINTER 2019

ACRYLIC PAINTING Learn the art of acrylic painting. Time will be spent sharpening your drawing skills in preparation for painting. Learn colour theory, shading, ways to describe space, use of light, composition, and the particularities of painting with acrylics. You’ll work from still life and models.

POTTERY Discover hand building, which includes slab building, slump molded forms, and throwing on the potter’s wheel. From basic thrown or handbuilt forms, you’ll produce mugs, bowls, and platters. You’ll also learn glazing and decorating techniques to finish your work and develop your own ideas related to functional and non-functional forms.

NEW! ALL ABOUT COLOUR In this mixed-media class, you’ll be introduced to colour basics and complete exercises with value (lightness or darkness of colour), colour contrasts, and colour harmony. This course is useful for advanced artists too, as a refresher. View WAG’s current exhibition The 80s Image and get a sense of the decade’s sensibilities through the lens of colour while working with acrylic paint, collage, and various coloured drawing media.
