WAG-Qaumajuq Opening Community Report

NEW INUIT ART CENTRE at the WINNIPEG ART GALLERY It is bright.

WINNIPEG’S NEW BRIGHT LIGHT!

QAUMAJUQ is an innovative new museum connected to the Winnipeg Art Gallery on all levels. This place is yours, and it’s open now!

The new main entrance is built of glass, inviting you in with thousands of artworks you can see even from the street. Michael Maltzan, the architect who designed Qaumajuq, was inspired by an expedition to Nunavut where the team visited Inuit communities and artists’ studios. He was so moved by the landscapes, light, and people, he set out to echo the ephemeral qualities of the North. The mass of windows throughout the space allows you to see in and out of the building, connecting WAG-Qaumajuq and downtown, but that’s not the only way the Gallery is opening up. The entire main floor is FREE and gives you a behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of the museum. It’s like a town square—you have a shop, café, theatre, and outdoor plaza. The studios on the penthouse level provide light-filled spaces for art making and education.

Special for Qaumajuq’s inaugural year, membership is FREE if you’re 25 or under, and if you’re over 25 you can sign up for $35. Admission is FREE for all Indigenous Peoples.

Join us when you’re ready, and you can always visit us online for creative activities you can enjoy from home.

Come on in, the dawn of light is here….

“Our dream was to make the WAG Inuit art collection more visible and more accessible. Qaumajuq is beyond what any of us could have imagined. More than ever before, our gallery connects people to art and, as importantly, it connects people to people, our national identity, and our Canadian culture and heritage.”

—Richard L. Yaffe, Q.C., President, The Winnipeg Art Gallery Foundation Inc.

Together, we’ve created a new museum—a place for us to meet and share, a centre for learning and discovery, and a way to connect with each other through art.

On this journey we’ve declared loudly that art is a voice. It shapes our experiences; it opens our hearts and minds to new ideas. It forms and shifts our perspectives. Art heals and inspires, and it fuels understanding. Qaumajuq is a welcome to all of these possibilities: it is bright, it is lit.

This is the start of something amazing—something that comes to life when you’re here and when you’re involved. Thank you for being part of WAG–Qaumajuq. Thank you for making this happen!

Thank you to all who have contributed to the founding of Qaumajuq, the Inuit art centre. Together we achieved an incredible community accomplishment!

This new museum is more than a building. It is a beacon, where Inuit voices are front and centre in sharing their creativity and culture. Community leaders and partners from across the country have come together to create a vibrant gathering place where all are welcome and where everyone’s stories are told and heard in a true spirit of reconciliation. Our doors are now open to welcome you. It’s yours to discover, to have fun and share, so please come and explore. There’s something for everyone.

Thank you to everyone who donated their financial resources and time to bring the vision that Qaumajuq represents into reality. This incredible collaboration would not have been possible without the thousands of you who care so deeply about establishing a unique centre in Canada to celebrate Inuit art and creativity.

While we consider ourselves a Northern nation, surprisingly few of us have truly experienced the North or connected with its amazing people. Qaumajuq will provide a bridge of learning through the power of art; an appetizer of the shared experiences that bring all Canadians closer together. Thank you again to all who are on this journey with us.

“As an Inuk here in Winnipeg, I feel that Qaumajuq is a great place for the world to learn about our culture. It’s a place for Inuit inclusion. We’ve been excluded from the conversation for so long. As the largest of its kind, this place will bring light to who we are and where we come from.”

”As a participant in the language-keeper meetings, I came to realize that these names represent more than just spaces in a building. When I heard the language keepers speak to each other and share ideas and concepts in their languages, their humility and wisdom touched my spirit. I was overwhelmed thinking of my grandmother, who spoke five languages, only one of which—English—made it to me.“

”Qaumajuq is changing the landscape, literally and figuratively. Not only is its world-class design impressive, but honouring the stories and cultural traditions of Inuit unites us and reflects our connections between the past and future, the North and South, and the beauty of nature to the artistry of mankind.“

NUTAAQ TUMMAQTUYUQ

“big steps forward” Inuvialuktun >>> Outdoor Plaza

Come relax at the new community plaza on St. Mary Ave. You can peek inside to the Visible Vault and other spaces of Qaumajuq, and enjoy the patio in the summer months. You’ll also come face-to-face with two new outdoor sculptures: Tuniigusiia/The Gift by Nunavut-born, Manitoba-based artist Goota Ashoona commissioned by the Manitoba Teachers’ Society; and Time to Play by Abraham Anghik Ruben, from the Northwest Territories and living in British Columbia, commissioned by Tannis M. Richardson.

Hear the stories behind these artworks at wag.ca/outdoor

The new and improved Gallery Shop on the main floor of the WAG now has a door directly off Memorial Blvd. Here you’ll find handmade creations by Manitoban and Canadian artists and much more with an eye on design. Our satellite location WAG@The Forks in the Johnston Terminal is also open, and you can shop online at shop.wag.ca.

Your purchase supports the WAG and artists in Canada

“Thanks to the incredible work of many people, Qaumajuq promises to enrich relationships between North and South, Inuit and non-Inuit. Located in Winnipeg, Qaumajuq also nurtures our vitality as a city that faces and embraces all directions.”

—Edward Kennedy, President & CEO, The North West Company

ILAVUT

“our relatives” in Inuktitut >>> Entrance Hall

The first thing you’ll see, even before you enter Qaumajuq, is a three-storey glass vault showcasing thousands of carvings from the world’s largest public collection of contemporary Inuit art. The vault’s curved walls allow you to walk around the collection and also be immersed in it. You’ll see curators, conservators, and other Gallery staff working within the vault.

Go behind-the-scenes with the WAG team and architect Michael Maltzan at wag.ca/vaultmove

Café

“let’s get together” in Inuktitut

Dine indoors, steps away from the Visible Vault and on the seasonal patio, or take snacks to go. Have a coffee, a glass of wine, or some light bites including options for kids. A rich, red mural entitled Nēhiyaw (Swampy Cree) by local artist Peatr Thomas was commissioned especially for the café.

Watch the video at wag.ca/peatr

“The ability to see the powerful art of the North in such an amazing location as WAG-Qaumajuq gives anyone visiting there joy!  The connection it gives the community at large to experience this art and the artists themselves can only be described as education and artistic collaboration at its best”

—Louise Leatherdale

ILIPVIK “a place where you can go to learn” in Inuttitut >>> The Learning Steps

The Learning Steps is a 90-seat theatre where you can take in talks, performances, films, and more. It’s also a smart classroom expanding our distance learning programs, connecting classrooms, artists, elders, and educators locally, from North to South and worldwide. A massive curtain printed with an artwork by Elisapee Ishulutaq, titled Yesterday and Today, will envelop you during screenings and private events.

“Art is a catalyst for meaningful conversation and learning, opening the viewers’ eyes to new perspectives. We are eager to see the positive impacts Qaumajuq will have on all who visit in connecting the cultures of the North and South. “

It overlooks the Learning Steps and features an outdoor terrace where you can not only hang out, but where you’ll discover artist demonstrations, performances, and more. Stay tuned!

“Art gives voice and builds relationships between diverse groups. Coming together to hear voices and stories that have in the past been marginalized is imperative for truth and reconciliation. Qaumajuq will create opportunities to gather, learn and grow together.”

—Richard L. Frost, CEO, The Winnipeg Foundation

“I am excited for people to see a new side of Inuit art, a side that breaks the mold that has been created by non-Inuit for decades, and a side that Inuit have known intimately since day one. Our artwork has always been contemporary and groundbreaking, and I am excited for the public to experience how Inuit see ourselves, expressed through the work of so many talented artists.”

On the third level, you will enter an intimate space called Pimâtisiwin that leads into Qilak, an 8,000-squarefoot gallery dedicated to the display of Inuit art. Enormous skylights in the ceiling bring an amazing quality of light, illuminating the art and undulating walls. Keep ascending skyward to Giizhig, overlooking the main gallery. Picture your next special event in these breathtaking spaces, available for bookings in-between the shows!

The inaugural exhibition INUA brings together more than 90 Inuit artists working across the Arctic and the urban south. INUA–meaning “life force” in many dialects across the Arctic–is an acronym for Inuit Nunangat Ungammuaktut Atautikkut, or “Inuit moving forward together.”

For the first time ever, a curatorial team represents all four regions of Inuit Nunangat, the homeland of Inuit in Canada: Dr. Heather Igloliorte, asinnajaq, Krista Ulujuk Zawadski, and Kablusiak. See 100 artworks, from digital media and installation art to mixed-media sculpture, painting, and photography. INUA runs at WAG-Qaumajuq until December 2021.

Online programs featuring the artists and curators will enable you to experience the show no matter where you are in the world: virtual meet-ups, panel discussions, storytelling, art-making workshops, and more. APR Watch for the full list of INUA Virtual Sessions starting in April at wag.ca/inua.

“We know that emerging artists contribute to vibrant communities, strong economies, and the continuance of culture. Through creative expression, their work empowers, educates, and inspires us all to look at the human experience with a new lens. Qaumajuq is a global stage for Inuit artists and we invite the world to engage with the beauty, creativity, and vibrancy of Inuit art and culture.”

“Qaumajuq is a place to celebrate the heritage, historical contributions, and totally unique culture of Inuit people. It is a bridge connecting Canadians from the North and South, allowing us to come together to learn from and support each other. And, it is another example of how, when Manitobans put their minds and their will to doing something for our community, special things happen!”
