GREETINGS FROM THE MANITOBA CRAFT COUNCIL Happy Fifth Anniversary, CRAFTED! When this unique Show + Sale of contemporary craft was inaugurated in 2015, the idea certainly felt novel, maybe even a little risky. Church basements and community clubs were the usual locus of craft sales, not international art institutions. For the Manitoba Craft Council, with its commitment to celebrating and promoting the best of contemporary craft, this kind of partnership was exactly what it was seeking. Collaborating with the Winnipeg Art Gallery has elevated craft and helped craft artists reach a new audience. WAG leadership saw the potential and embraced the concept. Now in its fifth year, CRAFTED has proven itself to be the premiere holiday venue for excellence in contemporary craft. Visitors praise the sale for its presentation of well-made, beautiful, and original work. Craftspeople appreciate the guests’ enthusiasm and care. CRAFTED is indeed a win-win for artists and appreciators alike! Many thanks to WAG staff and volunteers for continuing to champion craft and its makers through this lovely annual event: Sherri Van Went, WAG’s Retail Operations Manager and the lynchpin of CRAFTED; all WAG staff members whose work in fundraising, communications, event planning, security, caretaking, etc. bring CRAFTED to life; the CRAFTED committee (with a special thanks to Chair, Yoko Chapman); to our Northern and Eastern partners, for travelling to share your work with us; and to all the individual craft artists who enrich our daily lives with the work of your hands—thank you!

GREETINGS FROM THE NUNAVUT ARTS AND CRAFTS ASSOCIATION The Nunavut Arts & Crafts Association is excited to partner with the Winnipeg Art Gallery and the Manitoba Craft Council for the fifth edition of CRAFTED. Nunavut is one of Canada’s most creative regions: nearly one third of Nunavummiut identify as artists, and uniquely, many of those artists are members of families that include multiple generations of artists. Incredibly, more than 10 per cent of all Canadian art and craft sold internationally is made in the territory, which has a population of only 40,000. Our communities are alive with people involved in the arts economy—for personal and family use all the way up to international commercial sales— the creation of arts and crafts is an everyday activity for many in the territory, who draw personal and cultural strength and resilience through their practices. We are grateful to our collaborators and the organizers of this project whose important work results in this remarkable showcase of the very best from across Nunavut and Manitoba. Thank you to our friends at the WAG, the CRAFTED committee, the MCC, and our funding partners, the Government of Nunavut and the Kakivak Association. We hope those who attend CRAFTED will gain knowledge of, and find a new appreciation for the exciting, beautiful, and extraordinary arts and crafts Nunavut has to offer.

GREETINGS FROM THE CHAIR On behalf of the CRAFTED: Show + Sale volunteer committee, I would like to extend our sincere thanks for joining us for this incredible event’s fifth season. CRAFTED continues to grow and flourish, and with so many exciting new developments in the works for the WAG, there seems to be something extra special in the air this year. Whether this is your first time at the event, or you are a loyal patron, be sure to really look around and review the map and program to be sure you don’t miss a single highlight.

CRAFTED is a juried show featuring the one-of-a-kind offerings of over 60 artists from Manitoba and Nunavut. CRAFTED’s goal is to elevate the Art of Craft at the WAG by showcasing talented artists and staying true to CRAFTED’s unique philanthropic tradition which is the key to this very unique event. I would also like to extend our thanks to our presenting partners, the Manitoba Craft Council and Nunavut Arts and Crafts Association, our donors and sponsors, the chefs and artists who shared their work, and the CRAFTED committee and volunteers. It has been an honour to work with such an inspiring, generous, and committed community of patrons and supporters and I am thankful for the continued support both CRAFTED and the Down to Earth cookbook have received. Be sure to visit our pop-up Soup Bar for a sampling of some of the new recipes from our cookbook, and I hope you take away with you, a little piece of our CRAFTED community.

Aelios Designs • Winnipeg, MB • Jewellery L3 Katerina Pappas is mostly self-taught, and has been creating jewellery using traditional, but environmentally friendly methods for eight years. She learned while living abroad, having had the opportunity to work with seasoned metalsmiths. Katerina uses only natural materials in her pieces and recycles materials as often as possible. Her work is luxurious, yet lightweight and comfortable for everyday wear.

Alexandra Tumanov Jewellery • Winnipeg, MB • Jewellery L3 Alexandra creates Jewellery that celebrates the elegance of Mother Earth. Taking wood from a dying tree on his parent’s 1920’s homestead and turning it into a piece of art preserved something that represented his mother and father. The shapes, colours, and patterns found in such things as leaves, exotic flowers, or the wings of birds and butterflies, are some of her sources. Kathryne’s work has been documented in numerous ceramic publications, and is included in many government, public, and private collections.

Alan Lacovetsky • St Andrews, MB • Ceramics L3 Alan has had a passion for wood-firing pottery for more than 40 years. He makes most of his work on an antique foot-powered treadle wheel and makes his glazes using various crushed rock and wood ashes. He mixes most of his own custom clays. Alan has worked and exhibited locally, nationally, and internationally. This year he was inducted into the International Ceramic Artists Association (ICAA) in China. He will be building a wood burning kiln in Croatia and next year, one in India.

Le Petit Point • Winnipeg, MB • Fibre L3 Chantal Alary established Le Petit Point in 2014. A self-taught artist with an academic and professional background in design of the built environment, she creates woven wall art that explores the relationship between colour, texture, pattern, and composition. Little Wing Odd Birds • Winnipeg, MB • Fibre L3 Little Wing Odd Birds are small bird sculptures made of wool, wire, and winter nights in Winnipeg. They are created to celebrate both the beauty of yarn and charm of birds. Many are purely imaginary species and some are interpretations of actual birds found in nature. All are whimsical, playful, and odd. Materials are thoughtfully selected from a wide range of sources including leftovers from knitter’s stash and fibre produced at local Manitoba farms. 30

David McMillan • Winnipeg, MB • Ceramics L3 From scratch and made by hand, process matters. Dave throws his pots on a kick wheel, revelling in the slower rhythms of a human powered machine. His pottery is made using only natural materials from Manitoba– fireclay from the foothills of Riding Mountain, silacious sand from an ancient delta near Brandon, glacial till from the Interlake, and wood ashes from his kiln. He takes pride in harvesting and processing all of the materials used to make a truly local, sustainable, and unique product.

Metamorphosis Glass Works • Winnipeg, MB • Glass L3 Michelle Hunter is a glass artist who makes bespoke, artisanal glass art for people who love uncomplicated expressions of nature. Rather than follow the traditional path of cold glass work, Michelle loves to focus on creating things that resonate with people and create a connection. Stained glass by its very nature is special; no two sheets are the same. It’s an incredibly exciting medium to work in–every single piece is truly one of a kind!

FEATURED ARTISTS Mouse River Pottery • Wawanesa, MB • Ceramics L1 Angela Graham’s work often revolves around motherhood and the labour behind handmade objects. She is fascinated by the idea of functional art, highly decorative tools, and the history involved in traditional ‘women’s work’–sewing, cooking, and caring for children. She loves to create small pieces of art, which are used intimately by people in their every day routines. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Brandon University, and has since been building a pottery practice, community art studio, and family in Wawanesa.

Rosemarie Péloquin • Saint-Pierre-Jolys, MB • Fibre L3 Rosemarie is drawn to ordinary people, those who make up the wallpaper of everyday life. She starts with clouds of wool and a tiny barbed needle. With the quiet, repetitive act of needle-felting she teases out characters, shaping portraits and painting with wool. The size and material of these companions make them both accessible and vulnerable. They evoke a familiar nostalgia and wrestle stories from all who encounter them. Imagine the conversations you will have when you take one home!

PJ Anderson Ceramics • Winnipeg, MB • Ceramic L3 PJ is an early-career ceramic artist from Thompson, Manitoba. Her work draws from the longing for connection to cultural resources that were lost to the colonial machine. Hundreds of years removed from the involuntary migration of her Jamaican and Aboriginal peoples, she still feels a strong kinship to their traditional crafts of basketry and ceramics. She feels each piece is a love letter to her ancestors. PJ has shown internationally in South Africa, China, and the United States.

Kelli Rey • Winnipeg, MB • Ceramics L1 Kelli approaches her work like a scientific experiment–a process undertaken to make a discovery. Working with materials through various stages of development helps her distill her ideas. She adores references from early to mid-20th century industrial design, incorporating aspects that surprise, puzzle, or entertain. 32

After university she gained over six years of woodworking experience at Wood Anchor, a local reclaimed furniture and custom design/build shop and has since become a self-taught wood turner. Her intention is always to allow the material to speak first, followed by the impression of the tool and the hand to reveal both form and function. Karen is interested in the roles of collaboration and craft in a modern society. She is currently spearheading Root Cellar: a collective and modern multidisciplinary guild.

Rox Textile Art • Winnipeg, MB • Fibre L3 Naila Janzen comes from a long line of creative families. Both her mother and grandmother sewed for a living at some point in their lives. Although she has always been a fan of quilts, she didn’t start quilting until adulthood. After a failed attempt at quilting she decided to try it again while recovering from breast cancer. Quilting brought life back for her. She uses colour, line, and texture as inspiration to create.

Rusty Nail Shorebirds • Winnipeg, MB • Wood L3 Ted Muir is passionate about carving birds. His interest in carving was nurtured by a life-long love of nature along with years of volunteer work and an accomplished career in wildlife conservation. Each carving has the knack of resonating with those who seek a connection with nature. Ted’s signature carving is the rusty nail shorebird-characterized by an antique square nail bent to shape a bird beak. Each of his pieces is mounted on a base of driftwood or weathered oak farm fence post.
