FALL 2016 ART CLASSES

SEPT–DEC • Registration opens Aug 16

OUR PROGRAMS AND INSTRUCTORS For 80 years, WAG Studio has built a strong reputation for providing excellence in art instruction for children, teens, and adults. Classes incorporate current exhibitions with special tours, fostering a connection between the art on view in the galleries and the art created in the classrooms. All of our instructors have degrees and/or diplomas from universities or art colleges and many have master’s degrees and additional certification in education. While most work in private studios, instructors also bring experience as actors, administrators, art therapists, designers, and members of artist-run centres. For more information about our instructors, visit wag.ca/studio.

FALL ADULT BEGINNERS’ CLASSES All skill levels welcome • No pre-requisites required 10 WEEK CLASSES

20 WEEK CLASSES

Drawing Basics

Traditional Drawing

For students with little or no drawing experience, this introduction to the fundamental techniques and concepts of drawing will sharpen observation skills and build confidence. Practice converting what you see into what you draw as you work with a variety of subjects, including still life studies and the human form.

Learn the fundamentals of drawing and develop skills that transfer to other art practices. Academic drawing remains an incredibly valuable method for improving dexterity and sensitivity with materials such as pencil and charcoal. The media and subjects of this class are basic, but its highly disciplined approach will reward you with technique that is acquired through time and practice.

Pottery Discover hand building, which includes slab building, slump molded forms, and throwing on the potter’s wheel. From basic thrown or hand-built forms, you will produce mugs, bowls, and platters. You will also learn glazing and decorating techniques to finish your work and develop your own ideas related to functional and non-functional forms.

SUPPLIES Unless otherwise indicated, adults provide their own tools and supplies for classes. Basic drawing and painting materials are available for the first class, at which time supply lists are distributed. Intermediate Studio students should bring their own selection of supplies to the first class. A supply list will be handed out on the first day of class. For special workshops, pottery, and sculpture, supplies are generally included in the class cost. Students must provide their own tools for clay classes.

THE NEXT LEVEL ADULT CLASSES The following courses require Drawing Basics or equivalent experience as a pre-requisite. The Figure in Art

Life Drawing: Open Studio

Get inspired! Using a variety of drawing materials, you will work from a model and learn about proportion, foreshortening, and other fundamental techniques for drawing the human form.

Coordinator: Don Nowicki Tuesdays, 7-9:30pm Sept 20–Nov 22 • $8 per evening

Painting Basics Working in acrylic or oil paint, receive an introduction to colour theory, and learn to use various brushes and media, such as thinners and thickeners. Painting from still life, enhance your composition, decision making, and editing skills. As you progress through the course, your confidence as a painter will grow.

This drop-in program provides an independent study of life drawing. With no instruction given, enjoy sharpening your skills in whichever medium you choose. No advance registration is required; payment is collected each week at the WAG Studio front desk. Bring your own supplies.
