SPRING/SUMMER 2016 ART CLASSES
Apr–Aug 2016 • Registration begins Mar 8
OUR PROGRAMS AND INSTRUCTORS For 80 years, WAG Studio has built a strong reputation for providing excellence in art instruction for children, teens, and adults. Classes incorporate current exhibitions with special tours, fostering a connection between the art on view in the galleries and the art created in the classrooms. All of our instructors have degrees and/or diplomas from universities or art colleges and many have master’s degrees and additional certification in education. While most work in private studios, instructors also bring experience as actors, administrators, art therapists, designers, and members of artist-run centres. For more information about our instructors, visit wag.ca/studio.
ADULT ART CLASSES Unless otherwise indicated, adults must provide their own tools and supplies for classes. Basic drawing and painting materials are provided for the first class, at which time supply lists are distributed. Intermediate Studio students should bring their own selection of supplies to the first class. A supply list will be handed out on the first day of class. For special workshops, pottery, and sculpture, supplies are generally included in the class cost. Students must provide their own tools for clay classes.
BEGINNER ADULT COURSES All skill levels welcome • No pre-requisites 10 WEEK CLASSES Drawing Basics
Introduction to Watercolour
For students with little or no drawing experience, this introduction to the fundamental techniques and concepts of drawing will sharpen observational skills and build confidence. Practice translating what you see into what you draw as you work with a variety of subjects, including still life studies and the human form.
Explore the various techniques and materials needed to begin your own journey into the whimsical world of watercolour. Learn how to apply a wash and create a 3D image on a 2D surface, using both wet-in-wet and glazing techniques. Composition, negative space, colour theory and colour’s role in evoking mood and atmosphere will also be covered. Also included is instruction on drawing media and techniques, creating works that combine ink line with watercolour, and an introduction to traditional and contemporary painters.
Traditional Drawing Learn the fundamentals of drawing and build skills that transfer to other art practices. Academic drawing remains an incredibly valuable method for developing dexterity and sensitivity with materials such as pencil and charcoal. The media and subjects of this class are basic, but its highly disciplined approach will reward you with a depth of skill that is acquired through time and practice.
Learning to Draw with Colour
Pottery
After months of white snow, it’s time to spring into colour! Develop your understanding of colour and its expressive potential for a variety of subjects including still life, portraits, and landscapes. Learn about the history of pigments and the meanings of colours. Whether you’re a beginner or you have years of experience, you will acquire new observational skills, using various dry and wet drawing media.
Give pottery a whirl and discover hand building, which includes slab building, slump molded forms, and throwing on the potter’s wheel. From basic thrown or hand-built forms you will produce mugs, bowls, and platters. You will also learn finishing techniques for your pieces, including glazing and decorative touches.
NEW! FIVE WEEK COURSES Mixed Media
DIY Screen Printing
Students will explore a variety of media including clay, ink, acrylic paint, and more. Enjoy the creative process as you explore combining different media to create your own collage or 3D assemblage.
Learn the art of screen printing using simple techniques and everyday, easy to source materials. Learn colour theory, how to make your own screens, and specific methods for creating prints. Make your own prints on fabric or paper for cool custom t-shirts, greeting cards, or posters. A list of materials needed will be e-mailed before the class starts.
Mono and Block Printmaking Learn to make an original fine art print using two methods. Block printmaking is the process of creating one or several images by carving onto a block or plate, which is then inked and pressed onto a sheet of paper. With a monoprint, the ink or paint is applied directly to the plate and pressed onto paper to create a singular image. Explore various techniques used in creating multi-coloured block prints and mono prints. Students have the option to push the process further by combining prints with other media to create a collage.
Mosaic Learn a brief history of mosaic art and the basic techniques of the practice. You will complete at least three mosaic projects–basic design on wood panel, a flower pot, and a large scale project such as a table, decorative work, or mirror frame–and be introduced to the techniques, tools, and supplies needed to further develop your practice. Some supplies are included in the cost. A supply list will be handed out on the first day of class.
THE NEXT LEVEL ADULT CLASSES The following courses require Drawing Basics or equivalent experience as a pre-requisite. The Figure in Art
Acrylic Painting
Get inspired! Using a variety of drawing materials, you will work from a model and learn about proportion, foreshortening, and other fundamental techniques for drawing the human form.
This course focuses on basic colour theory, form, shading, positive and negative space, compositional arrangements, and the particulars of painting with acrylics. You will be introduced to more complex forms in design structure, such as still life, learn about portraiture or self-portraiture, and create anatomical paintings of hands, feet and torsos with emphasis on tonal shadings for flesh. Apply your new skills to create an imaginative painting composition of your own design.
Painting Basics Using acrylic or oil paint, get an introduction to colour theory, and learn to use various brushes and media, such as thinners and thickeners. Painting from still life, enhance your composition, decision making, and editing skills. As you progress through the course, your confidence as a painter will grow.
Open Studio: Life Drawing Coordinator: Don Nowicki Mon, 7-9:30pm Apr 11–Jun 20 • $8 per evening This drop-in program provides an independent study of life drawing. Because no instruction is provided, you’ll have the opportunity to sharpen your skills in whichever medium you choose. No advance registration is required; payment is collected each week at the WAG Studio front desk. Bring your own supplies.
