CANADA LIFE CENTRE

MTS Centre opens and begins its run as one of the busiest arenas in Canada with the homegrown grand opening concert “Northern Lights Northern Stars” on November 16, 2004.

In July 2021, True North partners with Canada Life to rename its downtown arena Canada Life Centre.

In September 2023, True North completes a $13-million venue renovation, bringing the total reinvestment into Canada Life Centre to $83 million since 2011.

THE POWERHOUSE BUILDING

The Powerhouse Building is renovated and serves as the first downtown home of True North Sports + Entertainment. A year later, CTV relocates their Polo Park studios to the four-storey building.

BURTON CUMMINGS THEATRE

True North takes over the operations of the Burton Cummings Theatre in May 2014, driving activity in the building and beginning restorations to the historic theatre, originally built in 1906. In time, True North acquires the property and hosts upwards of 100 events annually. True North has reinvested more than $2 million into the theatre’s renovation and refurbishment.

CENTERPOINT

Centrepoint, a five-storey mixed-use podium at the base of the 13-story ALT Hotel, opens in April 2015 as a partnership of Longboat Development and Groupe Germain Hospitality. The following year, the adjacent 195-suite Portage Avenue Glass House opens and expands urban living in the SHED.

242 HARGRAVE, TRUE NORTH SQUARE

After a 26-month construction effort, the first of True North Square’s five towers, 242 Hargrave, opens in June 2018 with the first commercial tenant commencing occupancy. Eighteen months later, the opening of the Hargrave St. Market food hall completes the vision.

WAWANESA NATIONAL HEADQUARTERS, TRUE NORTH SQUARE

Following the June 2019 announcement and spring 2021 groundbreaking, Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Company opens its National Headquarters at True North Square, welcoming 1,300 Manitoba employees in March 2024.

SUTTON PLACE HOTEL & RESIDENCES, TRUE NORTH SQUARE

The Sutton Place Hotel & Residences will complete True North Square with the addition of an 18-storey hotel and 13-storey residential tower, bringing a new five-star luxury hospitality and residential experience to the SHED.

ROYAL WINNIPEG BALLET SCHOOL RESIDENCE

In January of 2022, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet welcomed its students into the newly developed Royal Winnipeg Ballet School Residence, which is a best-of-class facility developed in collaboration with True North Real Estate Development to replace the former residence previously located on the site of True North Square’s fifth tower.

DOWNTOWN COMMUNITY SAFETY PARTNERSHIP

True North is a founding partner of the Downtown Community Safety Partnership (DCSP), which works to create a healthy, safe and connected downtown Winnipeg. The DCSP began operations in April 2020 and is based out of The Powerhouse Building.

PORTAGE PLACE REDEVELOPMENT

In May 2023, True North Real Estate Development announces plans to purchase and redevelop Portage Place to better serve and connect downtown neighbourhoods with essential services, including a comprehensive urban health centre of excellence.

225 CARLTON, TRUE NORTH SQUARE

The residential tower at 225 Carlton follows, welcoming residents in July 2019. Two years later, True North Sports + Entertainment relocates their primary offices to that tower, occupying four commercial floors.

CANADA LIFE CENTRE AS A CATALYST FOR DOWNTOWN INVESTMENT

Following the opening of the then-MTS Centre, public and private investment grows, bringing hundreds of millions of dollars in new construction, activity and enhancements from True North and other investors over the next two-plus decades.
