In contrast , the homey hum of activity in the shop lined with shelves of supplements, vitamins and natural remedies feels like the neighbor’s kitchen where everyone seems to gather. Borowski credits that energy to her customers.
At the same time as the ladies reorganized, the industry itself shifted dramatically. “Suddenly every WalMart and Superstore sold vitamins even if they weren’t the greatest. You had to be really sharp which is why places like Vita Health opened food sections.”
“Many have been coming since we opened and talk about how the store was more of an information center. Dad started when people didn’t even know the value of fiber. From the start there was a good vibe in the place and no high pressure sales.”
Rather than expand in that direction, Borowski chose to follow her passion while keeping the shop open but with a sharper eye than ever as to what she carries. “In this business, if it doesn’t work, it won’t sell for When Joe Borowski passed away long. f you want to stay active this winter, enjoy fresh air and the thought of venturing out into the pristine quiet of a city park appeals to you, then cross-country skiing may be just the thing to try on for size.
“If you can walk, you can cross country ski,” says Jeff Hampshire, President and Managing Partner of Nordic X-Ventures and coordinator for several programs under the Manitoba Cross Country Ski Association. “It’s a lifetime healthy sport you can start off as a bare bone beginner and slowly progress as far as you want to go.”

While many people have successfully taught themselves, there is a huge benefit to taking a lesson or two at the outset. “Even an hour and a half lesson which is pretty average can bring your skill and comfort level up a couple of notches with the right pointers from a certified instructor,” says Hampshire. Learning from a pro how to step into the stride will get you moving faster and with less frustration. “Shifting their weight and learning to balance are the key component beginners have a tendency to struggle with. The second most difficult thing to learn on your own is maneuvering up and down hills. “ If you are seriously considering purchasing a set of cross-country skis Hampshire offers a few pointers. The proper ski for you will depend most on your weight as they are sold according to weight range, not your height. This is because the bend beneath the ski is vital to making contact with the snow. The wrong weight will have a direct impact on that bend. “If you walk into a store and they don’t have a scale, I would walk right back out.” Your overall height will be a factor in choosing the right pole. Boots should fit as comfortably as your running shoes. The bindings are what attach the boot to the ski, but it’s more important that the binding match the boot than the ski. This comes back to the weight issue. You can change up the ski should it become damaged, but you are less likely to switch boots as quickly.
Your Path Starts Here
There are various skis for different conditions but unless you are an elite racer it isn’t something you need to worry about. How well your skis perform for various conditions will depend most on the wax you apply. Don’t let this scare you off. Proper waxing won’t add hours of drudgery and money. Most knowledgeable stores will be able to give you pointers on waxing.

Buying used equipment is fine as long as you know what you are looking for and what to avoid so it stands to reason that it’s best to purchase the best equipment you can afford from a store that offers expertise and exchanges if necessary. Hampshire says the other main pitfall for the novice is not dressing in several light layers for warmth, moisture and wind resistance. “Going out in a big winter parka and ski-pants is just not the right approach.” There is a lot of resource information on the web, packed with equipment drawbacks and benefits. Mental focus, not magic,
behind success in Hypnotherapy
H
ypnosis as a therapy is associated with lingering misconceptions, not the least of which is that suddenly, despite ourselves we no longer crave that cigarette, the chocolate or feel overcome with anxiety. If only. “People think of it as a miraculous change, effortless and outside themselves.” says Winnipeg hypnotherapist, Roman Buchok B.A. C.Ht. “Although significant change can and does occur quite quickly for certain individuals; others will need a certain amount of sustained attention for change to take hold.” The conscious mind is a very important part of the change process. So is relaxation and the ability to focus. “When you think about overeating, smoking or undesirable behavior, you create an image that’s usually negative and fraught with anxiety and preconceived notions. I start with asking what the person wants to be like or experience. Very often they have never considered what it would be like to be comfortable, relaxed and productive without the unwanted behavior or belief.” “The issue is discussed on a rational level and then, under hypnosis, once the mind and body are relaxed and focused, suggestions based on the clients goals are introduced. In this state the subconscious can more easily learn new ways of dealing with old habits. Hypnosis facilitates the ability to create a greater awareness of their own thought processes and develop tools to deal with impulses. A great misconception is that we are at the mercy of our own impulses and thought processes. The idea of hypnotherapy is not to remove or close off that part of yourself, but to learn how to accept it and create possibilities instead.”

But what about aversion therapy? Wouldn’t that be just what’s needed to kick a nasty habit? “There are certain techniques like negative conditioning that can be used to create an aversion in some people. It is not successful in everyone and my experience is that most people don’t want that. They want to be in control; to be able to enjoy reasonable amounts of foods, for example, without over indulging. The idea is not to layer on even more self-punishment which can be very damaging, but to learn to recognize and deal skillfully with unhelpful impulses and behaviors.” The actual process of hypnosis is in fact fairly simple. A great deal of the effectiveness will depend on having a good rapport with the hypnotherapist. A consultation, either by phone or in person is the best way to determine a good fit. In addition, prior to entering into a relationship with a therapist, establish that they are certified and in good standing with a recognized professional association with standards and guidelines such as the National Guild of Hypnotherapists or the Association of Registered Clinical Hypnotherapists (www.archcanada.ca)
