Raw foodism. The celebs are doing it. But can you? Can the average Joe, who lives in the winter climes of Winnipeg, sustain a diet of veggies, fruit and nuts? The answer might surprise you.

The raw food diet emphasizes eating unprocessed and uncooked foods. Any food that has not been heated above 115 degrees Fahrenheit is considered raw. Main staples include fruits, vegetables, sprouted grains and raw nuts and enthusiasts indulge in the likes of smoothies, salads, nori rolls, soups, dessert slices and many other delectable items. Amanda Grant, owner of Orange Lily Raw Foods & Catering is one Winnipeg’s most passionate advocates of raw food. Orange Lily does specialty catering and sells raw food products such as cakes, desserts and platters. Grant also conducts classes on transitioning to the raw food lifestyle along with how to prepare the cuisine. Before she embraced raw food a few years back, Grant wore glasses and had health issues including asthma, allergies and several skin problems. An avid cook of whole foods and made-from-scratch cuisine, Grant, who has a degree in biology, happened upon raw food when she began investigating vegan and healthy diets. After only two months on the raw lifestyle, she was able to get off a host of medicines and even stopped wearing glasses. Grant says that this way of eating preserves the living enzymes and living energies in food as well as unaltered nutrients. “It offers an incredible amount of nutrition,” she explains. “The nutrients are available in higher concentration because they’re not destroyed by cooking.”

Grant is a purveyor of “high raw” which is closest to 100 per cent raw but knows Winnipeg raw food enthusiasts that eat anywhere between 70 and 100 per cent raw. “Whatever people choose to do…there’s no pressure from me,” she says. “I respect people’s raw food journey.”

Golfman, already a vegan, was initially introduced to raw foods by his friend, actor Woody Harrelson. He fully committed to the lifestyle seven years ago after two car accidents left him weak and frail with a neck injury. Raw foods have contributed to a complete turnaround in his health.

Winnipeg Total Health Solutions Laser therapy is the use of monochromatic light emission via diode arrays which are placed on the skin. The light causes a biochemical reaction within cells which enhances the body's natural healing processes. The first noticeable effect is the production and release of beta-endorphins, substances in the body that inhibit the sensation of pain. Inflammation is also reduced which is often directly related to the pain we are feeling. Injured tissue literally gets a boost at the cellular level which speeds up the healing process 10 to 50 times faster.

He’s now active at yoga, running, biking and doing weights. “Since going raw my health has rocketed and my blood tests are perfect,” he explains. “All health professionals tell me I am in perfect health.” Golfman and Grant are nonchalant about the challenge of eating raw in the cold winter months. Grant prepares soups, slow heating on low to medium heat stirring the entire time, made of green leafy vegetables. Golfman posted a video on his site entitled “How I’ve Done Raw for 6 years in the Coldest City in the World” which includes tips adding warm spices like ginger, cayenne, garlic and cinnamon to food.

Grant points out many foods that are just as good eaten raw such as corn on the cob and mushrooms. Raw salsas and marinara sauce replace the bottled versions, and there are raw adaptations of humus, crackers, chips and nut mixes. Yummy kale chips prepared in her dehydrator, using low temperatures and a fan to dry food, are one of her favorite variations

Grant points out amino acids are the actual source of proteins and they can be obtained in a host of raw foods. “The P question (protein) is 100 per cent, hands down the biggest misconception about raw food,” says Golfman. He gets protein by consuming salads, green juices, hemp seeds, spirulina, cucumbers, onions, tomatoes, zucchini and other greens, superfoods, fruits, seaweeds, seeds and nuts.
