The Book Manhattan Beach, by Jennifer Egan Manhattan Beach, Egan’s World War II-era novel set in atmospheric New York City, has been called both moving and profound. The novel begins in 1934 Brooklyn as Eddie, 11-yearold Anna Kerrigan’s father, struggles to support his wife and two daughters. By the time Anna is 19, Eddie has vanished and America is in the Second World War. Working a dull job inspecting ship parts for the war effort, Anna seizes the opportunity to become the first female civilian diver at the Brooklyn Naval Yard. Around the same time, a chance encounter raises hopes that she can untangle the mysteries of her father's disappearance.
