One Book Two Villages (OBTV) is a celebration of reading and community. The Winnetka-Northfield Public Library District is excited to continue the tradition of excellence with this year’s title selections.

We are so excited to bring to our community an author and story that will captivate imaginations and give us a brief glimpse into what has been a long obscured part of history.

The 2015 adult book selection is Dead Wake: The Last Crossing of the Lusitania, by Erik Larson, the #1 New York Times bestselling author and master of narrative nonfiction. Larson has the gift of being both a talented writer and historian, weaving the two together with drama, emotion and suspense. His bestselling books include The Devil in the White City and In the Garden of Beasts.

Our 2015 youth book selection is Found (The Missing series, book one) by Margaret Peterson Haddix. This selection is a suspenseful book that touches on conspiracies, time travel and mysterious communication from the future. The whole family will be talking about this great read. We have both print and eBook versions of Found for checkout now! Find OBTV youth programs on page 11.

Please join us on Tuesday, March 10th at 10am, at our One Book Two Villages Launch Party, and pick up Dead Wake on its release date. For Adults

Erik Larson tells the story thrillingly, switching between hunter and hunted...

Full of glamour, mystery, and real-life suspense, Dead Wake brings to life a cast of evocative characters, capturing the sheer drama and emotional power of a disaster that helped set America on the road to war.

ABOUT THE BOOK A luxury ocean liner as richly appointed as an English country house set sail out of New York, bound for Liverpool, carrying a record number of children and infants. The passengers were anxious. Germany had declared the seas around Britain to be a war zone, and for months, its U-boats had brought terror to the North Atlantic. But the Lusitania was one of the era’s great transatlantic “Greyhounds,” and her captain placed tremendous faith in the gentlemanly strictures of warfare that for a century had kept civilian ships safe from attack. He knew, moreover, that his ship–the fastest then in service–could outrun any threat. Germany, however, was determined to change the rules of the game. An array of forces, both grand and achingly small, converged to produce one of the great disasters of history.

OBTV AUTHOR ERIK LARSON IS COMING TO WINNETKA AND NORTHFIELD THIS FALL! Erik Larson will be the guest and featured speaker at two One Book Two Villages events this fall. Mark your calendar for Thursday, September 24 for the cocktail party reception and book talk. Friday, September 25 we will host a luncheon and book discussion. Innovative service additions, more digital offerings and building improvements were paramount at the Winnetka-Northfield Public Library District in 2014.

2014

Year in Review Summer Reading programs are always popular with children, and this year proved no different. Our biggest achievement was the large number of adults that signed up and completed the program. We had a 500 percent increase of in adult participation in 2014.

OUR CORE SERVICES Books will always be a mainstay in the library brand, as our residents are enthusiastic readers. We host several book clubs in Winnetka and Northfield, and also at the North Shore Senior Center and Stormy’s in Northfield. Book Clubs featuring mysteries, cookbooks, fiction and nonfiction titles are held monthly. Book discussion groups for children are held at Once Upon a Bagel in Winnetka, and at U Dawg U in Northfield. Combining book discussions with a chance for a snack is always popular with kids! New types of programming for adults included cooking demonstrations, wine tastings and health and fitness topics. North Shore residents love to travel, and the library is a great place to learn about fascinating destinations. Travel programs highlighted destinations like Prague, Florence and Strasburg.

We hosted crowds of high school students each semester as they studied for finals, and we stayed open late the Sunday night before finals week, providing pizza as a treat. Hundreds of children and their caregivers attended storytime at the Library. Early reading and attending storytime contributes to future academic success! Our Maker Club for kids merges art and science to create a fun way to learn about everything from geodesic domes to engineering.

COMMUNITY One Book Two Villages, an annual celebration of reading and community, featured The Illusion of Separateness, by Simon Van Booy. The Library welcomed the author to Winnetka with a cocktail party, followed by a book lecture with a capacity crowd. The author also attended a book discussion and lunch at the Happ Inn in Northfield.

TECHNOLOGY The Library proved to be about more than just traditional print books this year, with an expanded offering of digital eBooks and magazines available for download to an iPad, Android tablet, computer, or even your mobile phone. With just a few clicks (and your Library card) users can get these digital products anytime, anywhere in the world with an internet connection. The Library developed into a place to learn about technology. We held classes in Microsoft Office products like Word, Excel and PowerPoint and one on Creating a Basic Website. THE STUDIO

Just in time for the holidays, we added Hoopla, offering instant access to free movies, music, audiobooks and television programs for digital streaming or download.

LIBRARY BUILDINGS

The Studio is the most unique addition to the library this year. The Studio is a space for creativity and innovation, dedicated to promoting the arts, in memory of Constance E. Staffi leno. Located in the Winnetka Library, The Studio features the latest technology and equipment for do-it-yourself projects: 3D printers, a laser engraver, a custom embroidery machine and more. Traditional art classes have included introductory pastels and watercolors.

and we look forward to the challenge of meeting the demand. Library Director Rebecca Wolf said, “2014 has been a fast-paced, energizing year at the library. I’m so proud of our staff and community volunteers that help make the library a warm, welcoming and productive space for our residents.”

Hundreds of visitors attended The Studio grand opening. Studio classes fill quickly,

The Winnetka Library re-roofing project was completed and the Northfield Branch Library was refreshed with new carpeting. The addition of the Community Room space at the Branch allowed for expanded programming and community use. The New Book Nook room was unveiled at the Winnetka Library, providing three times the space previously dedicated to new books. With chic signage identifying popular subject headings and replacing the Dewey Decimal numbers, finding your next book to read is easy. The New Book Nook has comfortable seating and
