LIBRARY NEWS

Meet Stephanie Girardi Our Technical Services Supervisor You might not realize it, because she works behind the scenes, but Stephanie’s touch is omnipresent in our library district. From each and every item we order to circulate, to the beautiful flowers gracing the entrance of the Winnetka Library, to the long-running Food for Thought Book Club, Stephanie has had a hand in the success of the Winnetka-Northfield Public Library District for almost 27 years. What was your title when you were hired? I was a page, shelving books and other duties as assigned for 12 years. I then worked in circulation for 8 years before moving to Technical Services. What does the Technical Services Department do? The Technical Services Department orders, receives, and processes all the Library’s physical, circulating material. What does a day in the life of a Technical Services Supervisor look like? I like to start each day by ordering the books and AV material that the librarians send me. I create the orders and do the data entry that puts the items into our catalog. After UPS delivers our boxes for the day, I receive and sort the items for processing. We put the stamps, barcodes, tags, and labels into the items that let them go home with the patrons, then take our finished items upstairs to be checked in by the Customer Relations staff. You always plant such beautiful flowers at the Winnetka Library, how long have you been gardening? I started gardening in 1982. I was living in Springfield, IL and very bored. I took a plant propagation course at the community college and just kept at it. I got my Master Gardener certificate in 1994 and became an accredited garden show judge in 1997. Most of the plants that I use at the Library are started from seed. How long have you been leading the Food for Thought Cookbook Book Club? Since the fall of 2013. There are still some

people who have been attending since the beginning. I’ve only discussed the same book once, and that was by mistake. Congratulations on your 25th wedding anniversary to former librarian Ray Kearney! Tell us how it all started… The best thing that I brought home from the Library is my husband Ray. He worked here as a Reference Librarian for over 20 years and was my supervisor when I was a page. We started quietly dating after I had been working for about a year and announced our engagement a few months before our wedding. The staff thought we were playing a joke on them! No one even knew we were friends. What are you reading now? I just finished Empire of Pain: The Secret History of the Sackler Dynasty by Patrick Radden Keefe. I’m about to start Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. What do you love about your job? I get to work with a great group of people. I also get to see the new books before anyone else!

Please Participate in the Winnetka Caucus Council’s Annual Survey to Provide Input on Library Services for Our Strategic Plan. As part of our commitment to being responsive to our community, we have embarked on a new strategic plan that will guide our Library District for the next three to five years. The plan will provide us with valuable information about our community and allow us to focus our efforts, time, and resources in ways that add value to the patrons we serve. We are partnering with the Winnetka Caucus Council to solicit feedback from our community through their Annual Survey. The Annual Survey will be conducted in the first week of June and will include questions about library services that will help shape the future of the District and create a roadmap for success. Up to two heads of households can complete the survey. Residents are notified of the survey via mail, temporary yard signs and email alerts. To learn more about the Winnetka Caucus Council visit www.winnetkacaucus.org.
