One Book Two Villages is a celebration of reading and community. For this year’s adult book selection, we have chosen The Illusion of Separateness, by Simon Van Booy. A poetic and graceful read, the story builds upon the discovery of astonishing connections between the characters that spans continents, a century, love and war. We hope that you will join us in exploring the themes of connection, kindness, and our individual impact on the lives of those around us. Continuing with these themes, we have chosen Mockingbird, by Kathryn Erskine, as this year’s youth book selection. The story begins after an event that forever changes a community, and the people within it. It is a story about healing, tolerance and forgiveness. The book offers a glimpse into the thought process of the main character, a 10-year-old girl on the autism spectrum. These books are impactful, with messages to ponder, discuss, and celebrate. We have a season’s worth of Library programs to build on these worthy themes and engage our entire community. Check out your copies of the books at the library, or use our e-book copies available online. I look forward to seeing you at one of our many One Book Two Villages events!

About the Book In The Illusion of Separateness, award-winning author Simon Van Booy tells a harrowing but enchanting story of how one man’s act of mercy during World War II changed the lives of strangers, and how they each discover the astonishing truth of their connection. The book weaves together the stories of unique and compelling characters who, through seemingly random acts of selflessness, discover the vital parts they have played in each other’s lives.

About the Author

Simon Van Booy has written two novels and two collections of short stories. He has edited three philosophy books, and has written for The New York Times, The Guardian, NPR, and the BBC. His work has been translated into fifteen languages. He lives in Brooklyn with his wife and daughter.

About the Book Mockingbird won the 2010 National Book Award for Young People’s Literature. The book is insightful, and imparts a hopeful message. The story is told by Caitlin, a 10-year-old girl with Asperger’s Syndrome, trying to make sense of the world and people around her. The story takes place after a lifechanging event which profoundly affects her family and the whole community. The book helps the reader understand the thought process of a child on the autism spectrum.
