In her most recent role as the Executive Director of Sycamore Public Library, Dombrowski oversaw all library operations and services for the more than 17,500 residents, a staff of 26, and an annual budget of $1.3 million. Before joining Sycamore, she spent four years at Gail Borden Public Library, Elgin, IL as Technology Education Manager and Director of Digital Services. In these roles, she ran computer center operations and technology classes at three locations. Prior to her time at Gail Borden, she worked for Westwood College as both the DuPage Campus Librarian and the National Librarian. There, she oversaw all library operations for both her campus and the college’s virtual library serving 7,800 students. Dombrowski made a full-time shift into libraries in 2012 after a seventeenyear career in the corporate world where she managed people and projects in a variety of industries. She received her MLIS from Dominican University in 2008. Monica is a 2015 recipient of ALA Publishing’s Carnegie Whitney Grant and a 2017 Library Journal Mover & Shaker Award winner for her work developing Gail’s Toolkit, a project later incorporated in the Public Library Association's DigitalLearn.org website. She served as Chair of PLA’s Digital Literacy Committee from 2017-2020, is a current member of the Illinois Library Association’s Public Policy Committee, and is a regular presenter at state and national library conferences. Dombrowski is passionate about developing staff and building community partnerships to bring library users engaging collections and responsive services.
Here are some fun facts about Monica!
She was on her high school’s varsity archery team and competed at State (Arizona). She is vegan. She got her first passport just before COVID hit and has not had a chance to use it. She loves board and card games. She has a song written about her that appears on the Ignitor’s 1996 “Ghost Train” album; it’s called “Monica.”
LIBRARY NEWS
STAFF PICK S
Hello, everyone! I wanted to take a quick moment to introduce myself to you and thank you for your warm welcome to the WinnetkaNorthfield District! My name is Monica Dombrowski and I am your new Library Director, just in from Sycamore, IL. I appreciate the kind notes, emails, and phone messages I’ve received welcoming me to the area. They sure have made me feel at home and proved that I made the right decision to come and join this team! As I write this, I am finishing my third week on the job and so far, I feel like we’ve accomplished a lot! I’ve started meeting 1:1 with staff to get to know them and listen to their feedback on the community, our workplace culture, and ideas they have for continuing to deliver outstanding programs, services, and collections. Based on this feedback—and an additional survey I conducted—we’ve adjusted our organizational structure to make it easier for staff to get the coaching and support they need to be successful in their positions. We reopened our Northfield Branch to library visitors and have made the decision to transition back to a Northfieldspecific staffing model, based on community feedback. We hope you will enjoy seeing some familiar faces. We’ve also started preparations for reopening The Studio at our Winnetka Library! We’re still working out the details as I write this letter but expect The Studio to be open for appointments soon, this time, with dedicated staff. I’ve also met with both Village Managers and Board Presidents to get some information on the communities
I’m serving. All were kind and gracious and offered their assistance as I acclimate to my new environment. I know it will take time to learn all the ins and outs and I thank you in advance for your patience and understanding! Finally, there are a lot of complexities to running a library, particularly during a pandemic when we all want things to go back to normal, but it isn’t safe yet to do so. The staff has done a wonderful job of keeping things going in the absence of permanent leadership for the last nine months. On their behalf, thank you for participating in our virtual programs, using our eResources, keeping your visits short, wearing your masks, following our capacity guidelines, and everything else you’re doing to help us—and your fellow patrons—stay safe during this difficult time. I know this holiday season will be strange for all of us and that many of the things we cherish the most, especially time with family and friends, will look different from years past. One thing that remains constant, however, is that our dedicated team is here for you and continues to work to connect you with the collections, programs, and services you expect from your library. Enjoy your holidays and wishing you and your dear ones health and prosperity in 2021! Warmly,
Monica
