NSIC THE HISTORY OF THE NSIC
F
rom its modest origin as a six-team alliance nearly eight decades ago, the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference has matured into a 14-team union of upper Midwest colleges and universities to form arguably the strongest affiliation in NCAA Division II. The NSIC can trace its roots to 1932 when six schools, including Bemidji State University, Minnesota State University, Mankato, Minnesota State University Moorhead, St. Cloud State University, University of Minnesota Duluth and Winona State University signed on as charter members. All remain active subscribers of the league today. Southwest Minnesota State University was added in 1969, followed by Northern State University in 1978, Wayne State College (NE) in 1998, Concordia University-St. Paul and the University of Minnesota, Crookston in 1999, the University of Mary and Upper Iowa University in 2006, and Augustana College, in 2008. Minnesota State, St. Cloud State and Minnesota Duluth later left the league to join the North Central Conference but returned to the NSIC in 2008. University of Minnesota, Morris and Michigan Tech University were once part of the NSIC family as well. In July of 2012, the NSIC will again expand with the addition of Minot State University and the University of Sioux Falls, bring the league to 16 members for the 2012-13 academic season. In 1992 the NSIC became a true athletic showcase for both men and women with the merger of the traditional Northern Intercollegiate Conference (NIC) and the Northern Sun Conference (NSC), the home of women’s athletics since 1979. Before NSIC affiliates became certified for championship competition in the National Collegiate Athletic Association in 1995, its member institutions filled prominent roles in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). NIC and NSC clubs annually dispatched qualified student-athletes to national tournaments and captured several NAIA teams and individual championships. The NSIC celebrates its 80th season this year and clearly continues to make a major imprint nationally, winning nine national titles in the last six years. Winona State men claimed NCAA II Basketball Championships in 2006 and 2008 and narrowly missed a third crown, falling in a last second shot in 2007. In addition, the Warriors established a NCAA II record of 57 consecutive victories. Concordia University launched an ongoing streak of four consecutive NCAA II Volleyball Championships in 2007. In 2008 the Golden Bears won 37 straight matches after a season opening loss on their way to a second consecutive title and scripted a marvelous encore in 2009 with a perfect 37-0 finish, a third straight national crown and a winning streak of 74 straight matches. In 2010 the Golden Bear extended that win streak to 75 before dropping their second match of the season. They started 2010 with a 10-4 record before ripping off 22 straight wins on their way to their fourth straight national title. In a most surprising run, Minnesota Duluth completed a perfect 15-0 season by winning the 2008 NCAA Division II Football Championship. The Bulldogs, limited to only 24 scholarships by league rule, swept a field of fully-funded teams, including top ranked Grand Valley State and number three Northwest Missouri State. Two years later in 2010 the Bulldogs repeated that feat, going 15-0 again to win the national championship. The Bulldogs became the first NCAA DII football squad to win two national championships with undefeated records. Minnesota State added more luster to the league by finishing 32-2 and claiming the 2008-09 NCAA II Women’s Basketball Championship. The Mavericks rolled to a wild 103-94 victory over Franklin Pierce to set a NCAA record for total points in the title game. Since 2000, the NSIC has also participated in Mineral Water Bowl. Hosted by the Quarterback Club of Excelsior Springs, Mo., the Mineral Water Bowl matches the highest-finishing teams from the NSIC and the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) not selected for the NCAA Division II football playoffs. Winona State defeated Missouri Western State, 43-41, in triple overtime, the Warriors, first-ever NCAA II post-season win in 2000. In addition, NSIC student-athletes have made a major splash nationally as well, collecting a batch of individual titles. Concordia setter Maggie McNamara was honored as the NCAA Division II Honda Women’s Athlete of the Year, the latest NSIC representative decorated with national Player of the Year honors. The NSIC has also had three athletes awarded with the NCAA Elite 88 Award, which is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA’s 88 championships. Earning the award were Kendra Huettl (Minnesota State, Softball, 2011), Matt Braithwaite (Augustana College, Cross Country, 2010) and Lauren Brown (Winona State, Outdoor Track and Field, 2010). Member schools continue to emphasize the educational, entertainment and unifying value of sports while pointing with pride to the many advantages to be gained by attending these colleges and universities. The NSIC is committed to providing rewarding experiences for its student-athletes, and while the challenges that loom are sizable, indeed, the NSIC is surely well positioned for the future.

SEASON OUTLOOK
The building process continues for the Winona State volleyball team. It was an extremely young squad – 11 of the 15 players were freshmen or sophomore – a season ago that took its lumps playing in the toughest conference in the nation. The 2011 Warriors, while still young, are rich in confidence and prepared to take a step forward. The lone senior for the Warriors is also the team’s top performer. Defensive specialist Shannon McGowan led the NSIC in digs per game last season and was an all-conference selection. McGowan is third on the WSU career digs charts with 1,692 and is on pace to hold the school’s all-time mark when the season is over. McGowan had 587 digs in 2010, proving once again to be the focal point of the Winona State defense. Her 5.93 digs per game set a single-season school record, breaking the mark of 5.88 digs per game she recorded during the 2009 season. McGowan and junior Maggie Finkel have combined to be one of the top back row duos in the league. Finkel was second on the WSU team with 205 digs in 2010 while leading the team with 32 service aces. Winona State has depth on both the outsides and in the middle offensively. While those hitters were learning their way through the rigors of a collegiate season in 2010, the rotation enters this season with a collective wealth of experience. The middle will be patrolled by junior Kathy Lohff. Lohff led the Warriors with 289 kills a season ago while hitting a team-high .285. She led the team in solo blocks with 19 and total blocks with 71. She also added 18 service aces. Kate Horihan added 207 kills from the middle last year and was second on the squad with 53 blocks. Junior Mary Sanderfoot will be looked to for production, as will freshmen Paige Garriga, Mikaela Girard and Laura Zimmer. Outside hitter was a position by committee in 2010, as the Warriors rotated five players on the edges. Four of those players return in 2011. Bekah Saugen saw the most action last year, netting 134 kills as a freshman while also recording 146 digs. Alli Glisch (91 kills, 156 digs) and Katie Froehle (84 kills, 188 digs) will be counted on to increase their output in their second seasons as well. Junior Kelsey Jacobs was hampered by injuries but should see plenty
of court time. Freshman Rachel Polland could find herself in the mix for significant action as well. There are three strong candidates to start at setter for Winona State. Kayla Uhlenhake and Elena Kruessel made strides as freshmen and will be joined by transfer Kaley Jacobson in the position rotation. Uhlenhake saw the majority of time at the position in 2010, recording 737 assists and handing them out at a 9.21 assist per game clip. She is already ninth on the WSU all-time assist list. She was effective around the net as well, with 34 kills and 21 total blocks in her rookie campaign. Kruessel made the most of her time on the floor last season, posting 250 assists and a 7.14 assist per game average. She had 12 kills and 11 blocks of her own on the year and will push for an increase in action. Jacobson is a transfer from Division I Albany and will be eligible to play immediately. THE OUTLOOK Winona State has increased the talent level it is putting on the court under the tutelage of head coach Dave Simon. The Warriors play in unquestionably the toughest conference in the nation with the national champion coming from the league in each of the last four years. At one point during the 2010 season four of the top five teams in the national rankings came from the NSIC. The Warriors went 12-16 overall and 7-13 in conference play a season ago. Youth and inexperience showed up from time to time throughout the season, something that the extensive experience gained by those underclassmen should fix. Winona State has made strides to improve its positioning in the conference and the still youthful, veteran team is poised to take the next step forward.

Dave Simon
Dave Simon is in his third season at the helm of the Winona State volleyball program, and has elevated the talent level of the Warriors in the extremely difficult NSIC in a short period of time. Simon has helped the Warriors improve in each of his two seasons as head coach, moving from 11 wins in his rookie campaign in 2009 to 12 victories in 2010. An outstanding recruiter, Simon has been able to land commitments from players of the year in both Minnesota and Iowa. Winona State went 12-16 during the 2010 season, with eight of those losses coming to teams ranked in the top-15 nationally. The Warriors claimed the title at their season-opening tournament hosted by Northern Michigan. Simon helped guide junior Shannon McGowan to All-NSIC honors as well. Simon became the sixth head coach in Winona State history in 2009, guiding the Warriors to an 11-20 mark in his first season.
Head Coach Simon earned two degrees from Mankato State University, graduating with a degree in Mass Communications in 1983 and Business Administration in 1984. He earned a Master’s Degree in Education with an emphasis in Sport Management from Virginia Tech in 1994. He was a student-athlete at Mankato State, participating in baseball for the Mavericks. Simon is also an assistant professor in the Department of Physical Education and Sport Science at Winona State University. He lives in Minnesota City with his wife Kathy and their son Greg. Simon also has two step-sons, Jason and Mathew, and four grandchildren.
Simon joined the Warrior program in 2007, spending two seasons as an assistant under Connie Mettille. In his first season with WSU, Simon helped the team post a 19-14 mark, setting a school record for victories since the team began competing at the NCAA Division II level. Prior to his arrival at Winona State, Simon was the head coach at Minnesota, Crookston for seven seasons. During his time in Crookston, Simon guided 11 players to NSIC All-Conference honors. More then 20 Golden Eagles were named to the NSIC All-Academic team during his tenure as well. Simon has also served as an assistant coach at the University of Wyoming, helping the Cowgirls finish in the top-15 in Division I in blocking during all three seasons he was with the program. A sideline veteran, Simon was an assistant at Virginia Tech from 1992 to 1997. During his time in Blacksburg, Simon helped Virginia Tech win 80 games and a conference championship. Simon has also achieved success at the prep level, winning back-to-back state championships as an assistant coach at Columbia Heights (MN) High School. He helped guide the school to state titles in 1989 and 1990, with the 1989 squad earning a No. 1 ranking nationally by Volleyball Magazine. Simon founded and directed the NRV Junior Olympic Volleyball Club, the Shamrock Festival Tournament and CAJ (Crookston Area Juniors). Simon has led various Junior Olympic teams and youth teams, while working with clubs around the Midwest. He has worked with Minnesota Elite, Sideout VBC, Reebok Third Coast Championship and the Minnesota Festival. Simon is also an annual instructor with Midwest Volleyball Instructors. Simon is a member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association and North Country Region, while being CAP I and IMPACT certified.
