Introduction: Oakland County

2016 Year in Review Oakland county job postings climbed sharply in the previous quarter despite three consecutive declines since 2016. Year-over-year job demand climbed 5.8 percent, and since Q4 2016, job demand grew 20.1 percent to 48,075 total posting which corrected the 12 percent decline between Q1 and Q3 2016. Occupation group specific postings in Q1 2017 since the last quarter displayed job postings growth in all five areas highlighted in this report. Business and finance job postings remained close to flat with a 0.4 percent decline, from 3,379 to 3,364, a difference of 15 postings. Yet, business and finance postings grew 10.2 percent since Q4 2016. Healthcare job demand climbed steeply to 5,802 from 4,295, a 35% quarterly increase or 1,507 additional postings. Despite, healthcare jobs remained unchanged between Q2 and Q4 2016, the annualized job demand increased 21.5 percent. Similarly, IT job demand jumped 18.9 percent from 5,039 in Q4 2016 to 5,991 in Q1. Annual IT job demand suffered, however, with three consecutive job postings declines beginning in Q1 2016 at 6,471 to 5,039 in Q4 2016, a 22.1 percent decline recovered year-over-year at a 7.4 percent decrease or 480 job postings. Skilled trades and technicians job demand mimicked the quarterly trends of both IT and healthcare occupations with a steadily slumping job demand between Q1 and Q4 2016 (14.3 percent decline), only to rebound 28 percent between Q4 and Q1 2017 to remain net positive yearly job demand growth of 9.8 percent. Transportation, distribution, and logistics (TDL) job demand continues a familiar growth pattern. Year over year, TDL job demand is down 3.2 percent with the most dramatic decrease taking place between Q3 and Q4 2016 only to rebound 8.2 percent since the last quarter. The labor force in Oakland County grew by 3,463 individuals to a total of 651,563, a 0.5 percent increase. Employment since Q1 2016 grew 0.8 percent while unemployment took a 4.7 percent decrease, the current unemployment rate stands at 4.3 percent which has only increased 0.1 percent since Q1 of 2016. Key Findings for Q1 2017 Online job postings shot up by 20 percent to 48,075 postings for Q1 2017 Postings increased by a total of 8,048 job postings, following some decreases during 2016. However, this current level of demand is a record high, beating the previous maximum from Q1 2016 by more than 2,600 postings. Health Care and IT remain the highest in-demand occupational groups. These two groups are routinely near the top in terms of online job postings for Oakland County. IT postings outpaced Health Care despite the latter, more than doubling the former in employment. This is mainly due to the immense popularity of software developers and increased demand for computer systems engineers. Job postings increased in each occupation group reported on While 2016 held stagnation and decline for some groups, every occupation group in this report grew in demand during the first quarter of 2017. Business and Finance and Skilled Trades especially regained their vitality with 10 and 28 percent posting increases respectively after three consecutive quarters of downturn. Meanwhile, Health Care, IT, and TDL saw continued increases in online job postings. Learn to Earn: Lucrative entry level positions for those with the right education Most of the online job postings analyzed require under five years of experience. Bachelor’s degrees are sought after in IT and business, with an associate’s degree most desired in Health Care. Software developers and Registered Nurses, the county’s most popular and fastest growing jobs overall, have entry level wages around $25 hourly. Many other IT positions along with management and financial analysts also start over $20 hourly. Skilled Trades Rebound Despite less than stellar performance during 2016, demand in Skilled Trades grew by 28 percent this quarter, and increased employment for a seventh consecutive year. Most top jobs in the group remained the same, with lucrative Q4 newcomer Electronics Engineering Technician reappearing in the top 5.
